DM-Salsa Presents: The Shadow Queen (Inactive)

Game Master AdamWarnock

The town of Hammenholdt has been lucky. Prosperous from trade, the town has been able to afford peace as few can.

But its luck has run out and something from the darkest shadows now plagues the town.

What I was smirking at was not the fact you got the umlauts wrong (that's only natural), but the fact that you're using existing real life cities and regions. Schleswig-Holstein is a German region comparable to a federal state and Kiel is its capitol. To a German that sounds as it would for a US American to call your country Massachusetts and your cities Boston, Worcester and Springfield.

Yep. Sure does. I also stole a couple of smaller modern villages from the Rhineland Pfalz to round out the locations I wanted to specify.

I was clear before starting that I was looking to build an environment for the historic Landsknechte to be from. Would you be less insulted if I completely ignored the historic link to Germany (though I did swap well away from the Swiss border) or if I just blatantly took all the references I desired and then threw Spanish names at it instead?

Trying to stick to reasonably related references (though imperfect) is a sign of respect, don't you think?

I am not insulted at all. After all I borrow a bit, too. I didn't exactly come up with the title "Defender of the Faith" for a queen myself. Whatever you do, don't call anything "Düsseldorf" because that's where I am right now. If wanted to go there I'd step out of the door, not play PBP games.

How many people here, are there?

I spent a few years in the Rhineland-Pfalz (stationed at Ramstein AB in West Germany, actually), but as a typical ugly American never learned the language. What you see as normal historic neighborhoods are physical displays of what most Americans see in their minds when discussing many of these fictional locations.

Edit:

Heck, actually, both of my boys were born in West Germany. They have amazingly colorful Birth Certificates issued by the US Embassy as proof of their Natural US Citizenship.

Also, American RPGs set in times after the colonization make HEAVY use of actual locations on our continent. We're used to seeing real-world locations named and used as references to help establish a better common concept amongst those playing the game.

Well, my creative juices haven't been flowing much lately due to stress and illness, but I think I'd like to try playing an oracle. It's not a class I've had a good crack at before, so I'd be interested in giving it a shot. Now that I've settled on a class, hopefully the rest will start falling into place...

Dark Archive

My concept is a druid (bear shaman archetype). If you have decided to allow skinwalkers, I would go with a bear-kin. If not, he will be human. I have my character built, but will change it by race as you decide. I know that Black Dow is going with a fighter (viking archetype) multiclassed with ranger (freebooter archetype). He will be up in a few hours to post his character.

submitting half orc fighter if thats good enough for submission

DM Salsa - with regards traits - couple of wee questions;

Can Drayen's druid and my fighter/ranger share a trait - we were considering the Blood of Giants campaign trait for Reign of Winter (we're possibly tying it into the culture's history of our Northmen being rumoured to have decended from the jotunns)

Also is the Additional Traits feat allowed? I love me some traits ;)

Posting finalized submission, crunch completed

Kylar's Background:

Kylar hails from the nation of Nashec, a kingdom formed ages ago by refugees fleeing the elves invading their homeland. Though the war is centuries in the past, a strong anti-elven sentiment still runs through it's people – much to the misfortune of Kylar himself, born to an elven father and human mother.

Both Kylar's parents were mercenary soldiers, who often left him in the care of a close friend when they were out on jobs. Kylar often assisted his “uncle,” a bookseller, during these times – though half the time he would be reading the books he was supposed to be cataloging. He was an inquisitive young man of keen intellect, and due to the ostracization he encountered because of his elven blood, Kylar much preferred the company of books to people, developing an acerbic wit and taciturn manner to be used against the majority of people he met.

Shortly before he turned fifteen, word came from his parent's employer that both his mother and his father had been killed during a job – slain, it was said, by a sorcerer against whom the mercenaries had been practically helpless. Bereft of his only close family (his mother's family having rejected her when she took up with an elf), Kylar eventually made up his mind to study magic himself, in order to bend all his learning and his formidable mind towards undoing its effects and protecting others from it.

Kylar sought instruction in magic outside of Nashec, in order to escape the stigma of his mixed blood, and has not returned to his home country since. Since leaving his schooling, he has taken work where he can find it, seeking to further his understanding of magic (and how to undo it) and find some greater purpose for his life.

Homeland:

Homeland: Nashec

Nashec was formed centuries ago by an influx of human refugees fleeing a destructive war in their home kingdom of Kaelia, where elves (tiring of the long harassment of their borders by the burgeoning human population) had launched a full-scale invasion. What little royalty joined the refugees in finding a new land never decided on single ruler. Now, the head of each house styles themselves Prince or Princess and Nashec is ruled via a council of these nobles. The politics of influence are exceedingly complicated and most commoners care only about which house holds sway in their particular region.

Since its foundation, Nashec first fought to support its parent kingdom against the elves. Once the attacking elven nations signed a peace arrangement, Nashec was forced to fight against Kaelia to secure independence, a war it won fairly handily due to the war exhaustion of the populace at home. This leaves Nashec in the strange position of being unfriendly both with the elven nations and Kaelia at the same time.

At first, the anti-elven sentiment was codified into law and elves were unwelcome in the nation of Nashec at large. The practicality of time and trade did their work over the centuries, and now no “official” discrimination exists, though a strong bigotry still runs through the populace. The only exceptions are generally merchants and the nobility who finance them, as trade with the elven nations is quite lucrative.

Geographically, Nashec is a hilly land with patches of light forest and scrub, surrounded on two sides by long sandy beaches and the coast. The capital city is built around the only natural deep-water harbor for many miles. The native human tribes have long since been absorbed into Nashec's people, forming the bulk of the population in the interior. The discovery of silver inland of the coast resulted in a boom of commerce which went a long way towards ensuring Nashec's survival in its early decades.

Questionnaire:

1. How long have you been playing RPGs? What got you started?

In various forms for about fifteen years. However I never managed to get a stable D&D/Pathfinder/any other system group going, and so have only played any system a couple times. I do a lot of acting, writing, etc. Also roleplay a bunch on forums in both rules and rules-free situations.

2. What is your favorite character from fiction (This can include characters from modules and APs)?

I could never pick a single favorite character, being a great lover of variety. However, for the sake of this question I'll go with Tolkien's Feanor, who showed us that elves can be covetous psychopaths too.

3. What is your favorite character that you have created?

See above. And even harder, because I do a lot of writing and thus create a metric s@#$load of characters. Assuming you mean characters I've created for roleplaying games, though, I'll go with Geralt Eletharion, a Protean fighter/sorcerer whose original concept had him as a gang-leader with an interesting history, who went berserk if anybody tried to tie him up (or cage him, or take over his mind, etc...). The alias I have for him here isn't quite the same – I have the original concept written down elsewhere.

4. What makes your character unique?

In short? He's a wizard who kinda-sorta hates magic, especially when it's used against people maliciously.

5. What do you expect from me as a GM?

A) A fun campaign!
B) Enforce the rules you state for your players, and follow them yourself as well.

6. What is your favorite color?

Blue

7. What do you think my favorite AP is?

I really don't know any of the AP's, so I'll just guess the most popular one I see on these forums – Wrath of the Righteous?

Awaiting your input into Drayen/my own submission queries DMSalsa. In the interim I'll fire you my questionnaire:

Questionnaire:

1. How long have you been playing RPGs? What got you started?

Been gaming on and off over the last 30 years (!?) - began with the red box basic (purchased because my local games store did not have the Judge Dredd boardgame)... really kicked into high gear over the last 15 or so with D&D/Pathfinder and some other dabblings (Warhammer et al).

2. What is your favorite character from fiction (This can include characters from modules and APs)?

As my nom-du-boards suggests I'm a major Joe Abercrombie fan... Black Dow and Caul Shivers have special places as inspiration characters. Grim Northern basterds lol - what do you expect from a Scotsman lol.

3. What is your favorite character that you have created?

Man that's a tough one. I've a bunch of characters over the years that I've loved creating and playing. One of my current favourites is a Bloatmage Thassilonian Specialist of Gluttony Sinmagic from a Way of the Wicked game. An utterly depraved corpulent camp character - much fun to play.

4. What makes your character unique?

He's a Northman reaver with the blodd of jotunn in his veins! His size, his look (oversized Sam Elliot lol) and his black humoured jocularity make him very different. Couple that to the even larger Bear Druid and oar brother that Drayen will submit and you've a very unique pairing...

5. What do you expect from me as a GM?

Fun and fairness - for both us players and you as the GM. Giving us a chance to help world build is a great opportunity and a very welcome one... Collaboration from the off - its a good sign :)

6. What is your favorite color?

Varies - I've chaotic tastes lol. Blue and gold are a favoured combo.

7. What do you think my favorite AP is?

Curse of the Crimson Throne? ;)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@ Black Dow: Go for it, and yes.

FYI - Shotgun message I am posting to all of my games (and the recruitment threads I have been participating in):

I will be attending a Mormon-friendly scheduled Wood Badge course (first weekend) this week. The Mormon friendly part is that the course runs from Thursday (0730) through Saturday (2000ish) instead of the more normal Friday through Sunday.

I expect I will be checking the boards and posting Wednesday evening, but probably not as extensively and repeatedly as I do most weeknights.

Then, my wife and I are supposed to get up Sunday and go shopping for some better work clothes for me. It will probably be Sunday evening before I post again.

Just trying to make sure people are aware, and don't end up waiting on me by mistake.

Here is drayen's submission. Everything is included in the character's profile except the questionnaire answers in spoilers below.

Questionnaire Answers:

1. How long have you been playing RPGs? What got you started?

I began playing D&D in 1981. Mark Pocinich and Robbie Schafnitz, my third grade classmates, got me playing.

2. What is your favorite character from fiction (This can include characters from modules and APs)?

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite novel, but Edmond Dantes is not my ideal character. I think I must say my favorite fictional character is Sir Percy Blakeney, The Scarlet Pimpernel.

3. What is your favorite character that you have created?

Hakon

4. What makes your character unique?

You didn't read the background?

5. What do you expect from me as a GM?

To have fun! We can't if you can't.

6. What is your favorite color?

The Saltire blue

7. What do you think my favorite AP is?

Based on your desire to create a homebrew world, Kingmaker.

I have homeland and a build. I'm hoping to have the rest done by this time tomorrow, if that's not too late; a lot of crap has come up recently. I know what I've got so far is pretty... well, lame, and I guess that's because I'm so scattered. But I'm too stubborn to just withdraw my application. :P

Homeland - Tairesia:

The country of Tairesia is small, but has always harboured a close connection to the land. Founded some 200 years ago by a mysterious ruler who seldom emerges from his keep, Tairesia is surprisingly self-sufficient. The vast, rolling plains allow for fertile farmland, aided by the mighty Castillian River, and the towns are welcoming to adventurers and warriors of all stripes – such people often coming to try their luck at finding the lost treasures in the woodlands, and at the bed of the Castillian itself.

The treasures seem to be remnants of some ancient empire, and the ruler of the kingdom – King Diothaean, with no face known to assign to the name – pays handsomely for each recovered, through his intermediaries. While some question their ruler’s strange habits and seemed absence, he rules benevolently enough that few take it further than a simple wondering – and those that do often leave Tairesian borders, seemingly under their own free will.

As such, several adventuring bands come to Tairesia to find fortune, though the results are wildly unpredictable – some will leave an expedition, wagons laden with ancient pottery or weaponry, while others will leave empty-handed. Most attribute it to Desna’s whimsy, though the truth is far from the gods.

Centuries ago, the land that would become Tairesia was a land occupied by the fey, for the First World lurks close behind the woodlands and river – and when the previous inhabitants worshipped the fey, the fey in turn rewarded them with their secrets. Their music, their crafts – they fey helped the humans build a wonderful empire, and the reason for its fall is known only to the fey, which preceded it. It is the fey that decide who benefits from the treasures of old, and who returns with empty pockets. Their reasons are unknowable to human minds, and indeed, few are even aware of them – and that is the way they prefer it to stay.
