DM-Salsa Presents: The Shadow Queen (Inactive)

Game Master AdamWarnock

The town of Hammenholdt has been lucky. Prosperous from trade, the town has been able to afford peace as few can.

But its luck has run out and something from the darkest shadows now plagues the town.

So is everyone moving on?

Helena wants to stay with the dryad and make sure she gets back to her tree. She knows she has a job to do here, but can't leave the poor thing alone while she's wounded.

Letting out a heavy sigh, Delilah commented, "I suppose I'd better go with them, you know, to keep them out of trouble." Lifting her crossbow and putting the bolt back into place, she left down the trail after the Northmen.

Male Half-Elf Wizard(Abjurer)/3 HP 18/18 | Init +1 | AC 11/ T11/ FF10 | Saves Fort+3, Ref+2, Will+5 | Perception +11

If Wilhelm starts moving again, Kylar will too.

Those Moving on
The tracks continue on, with the obvious detour made by the goblins before moving to catch up with the other set of tracks.

Those staying with the Dryad

Between the ministrations of Helena and Rayla, the fey's wounds are bound and she seems to be less afraid.

"Cad atá tú tar éis? Na diabhal beag?"

Sylvan:
What are you after? The little devils?

Female Human Oracle (life) 4 | AC 19, T 11, FF 18 | hp 8/31 | CMD 16 | F +4, R +3, W +4 | Init +2| Perc +4 | low-light vision, darkvision 30 ft | Channel Positive Energy 3/5 | 1st-level spells 6/7 | 2nd-level spells 1/4

"Sea, an diabhal beag. Cailleadh Ar cheann de na féin sna coillte tamall ó shin, agus imní againn d'fhéadfadh siad a bheith déanta uirthi."

Sylvan:
"Yes, the little devils. One of our own was lost in these woods some time ago, and we worry they may have taken her."

BattleMaps | Chronicles of Kassen | HeroLab Files | Loot Sheet

The others find the dryad's tree near by. She wishes them luck before they head off to join the others. The gloom grows more oppressive the deeper into the forest the party goes. The trees begin to blur with one another, and time seems to crawl. Finally evening arrives as the party approaches a clearing.

Perception DC 24:
There is a piece of twine across the path, about an inch from the ground.

Marching order please.

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 6

I was hoping for a Natural 20, damn.

Female Human Oracle (life) 4 | AC 19, T 11, FF 18 | hp 8/31 | CMD 16 | F +4, R +3, W +4 | Init +2| Perc +4 | low-light vision, darkvision 30 ft | Channel Positive Energy 3/5 | 1st-level spells 6/7 | 2nd-level spells 1/4

Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9

I'd say Helena should be at either the back of the marching order, since she has decent armour and a reach weapon, or in the middle, where she can easily see everyone with her limnited vision. But that's just me, and I have no head for tactics.

Human (þursfyrðar) Druid (Bear Shaman) 1 | AC 15 T 11 FF 14 | HP 19/19 | F +4 R +1 W +4 | Init +1 | Perception +8 | Predator's Grace 5/5

Björn is definitely a frontliner coupled with the highest Perception and Survival modifiers in the party (being one of only two who could make the latest check, not that I did).

Björn comes into the clearing looking for any signs of trouble. Seeing none, he looks to his friend, "Of mikið drekka. Þetta er nógu í dag, nei?"

Translation from þurstunga (Giant):
Too much drink. This is far enough for today, no?

Being's how I'm rather squishy, I'll be towards the back.

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Skäne initially will be most likely found fighting by his oar brother's side (so Bjorn can benefit from his Shield Bearer trait)

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

The big Northman keen eyes scan the trail ahead, then scowling he stoops and signals the others to halt;

"Hold. There is a wire across our path awaiting the unwary... see?"

At the Great Bear's comment Skäne shakes his head ruefully;

"Engin bróðir. Gildrur settar á braut, ef til vill með þessum litlu djöflar, þýðir að það er ekki öruggt fyrir aðra. Við verðum að ýta áfram."

þurstunga (Giant)::

No brother. Traps set on the path, perhaps by these little devils, means it is not safe for the others. We must press onward.

Male Half-Elf Wizard(Abjurer)/3 HP 18/18 | Init +1 | AC 11/ T11/ FF10 | Saves Fort+3, Ref+2, Will+5 | Perception +11

Kylar will be just behind the meatshields so hopefully his high perception can come in handy. :)

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

Kylar halts when Skane warns them of the trap. Only after that does he see it.

"Sharp eye, my friend." He looks off into the woods on both sides. "Hm. Set by goblins, or something else?"

BattleMaps | Chronicles of Kassen | HeroLab Files | Loot Sheet

Soooo, is anyone going to try and disarm it? Take a closer look? Perhaps leave it be?

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Rayla will want to cover the left flank, I suppose.

In sylvan, the innate language of the forest, the rivers, the wind and the tree Rayla addresses the dryad as they depart. "I hope you fey do bring luck. Best of luck to you and your tree as well; hopefully we can keep the little devils from ever harassing you again." She indicates a kiss on her unarmoured left and puts the hand flat against coarse, sturdy bark of the massive, old oak and closes her eyes for a couple of heartbeats. "Farewell."

Perception DC 24 is impossible, since modifier is only +3; no roll.

She does draw her greatsword as the group continues; whatever is going on here, the group is getting deeper and deeper into enemy territory and so far no expedition has made it back. There had to be something worse than Goblins going on here, goblins are a pest, but they are not that subtle.
She is completely surprised as Skäne suddenly stops the group staring at the floor while she Rayla was pretty certain that nothing hostile was in their immediate surrounding and looks quite surprised as he points out the trap.
"Either it was set by the goblins, or something allied with them... Otherwise the Goblins would likely have stepped into it." She looks around. "What does it trigger?"

Human (þursfyrðar) Druid (Bear Shaman) 1 | AC 15 T 11 FF 14 | HP 19/19 | F +4 R +1 W +4 | Init +1 | Perception +8 | Predator's Grace 5/5

Björn grunts in surprise at the tripwire as it pointed it out to him. "Of rétt, bróðir. Látum okkur sjá hvað liggur Kols."

þurstunga (Giant):
Too right, brother. Let us see what lies yonder.

So saying, the near giant grasps his scythe just below the blade and tamps the ground on the far side of the tripwire with the butt looking for a concealed hole or pit.

BattleMaps | Chronicles of Kassen | HeroLab Files | Loot Sheet

Bjorn's investigation turns up that there is no pit to be found.

Everyone give me a perception check. If you have scent, you can apply that bonus to this check.

Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Delilah just stood there, crossbow slightly pointed to the ground, just casually looking around the surrounding area. This is what I signed up for? Seems rather boring. Her eyes drift over to the Half-Elf, I wonder how he is?

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Remaining in a crouch, Skäne eyes the tripwire with a scowl;

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

"I know not what it triggers... yet..."

The giant Northman slowly rises.

"Halda bróður. Ég kann að hafa eitthvað ..."

þurstunga (Giant):

Hold brother. I may have something...

Wilhelm Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

If you made above a 10 on the perception check:
The air holds the smell of decay. It smells like something, or several somethings, have been dead for a day or two.

Skane's eyes follow the tripwire to where it connects with a series of ropes. It appears that the tripwire is set to release something from the cover of the limbs and leaves above.

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Skäne's head moves slowly upward until he points to the canopy above with his ax;

"The trap releases something above if sprung. Be ware... There is a also fell scent of rot upon the wind. Can you smell it?"

The big Northman shrugs his shoulders as he looks to the others;

"I ken not if they are connected..."

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

"It smells like death here." A shiver runs down her spine and for a moment she closes her eyes trying to focus. "Maybe it's just a dead beast but we better check out what it comes from. We could simply trigger the trap from safe distance but that might attract attention. I'll go look." It doesn't sound like she was either particularly fond of the prospect to investigate the trap, nor does does she leave any doubt she is actually going to do it.

Rayla doesn't hesitate for long but starts to strip her armor and equipment until she is dressed in nothing but a leather wrap around her breasts and a skimpy something between wrapped mini skirt and loincloth. She grabs a stone from the forest floor, knots it into the end of her rope and throws the weighted end over one sturdy branch of the tree in which the trap is hidden. "Watch out for my equipment, please." she says as she starts to climb - not really directed at anyone in particular but she looks primarily to Helena.

Climb: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 (note that this is 4 higher than noted on the sheet, because ACP does not apply, also consider possible helpful effects of rope)

As Rayla stripped down, Delilah looked her over. Oh, yummy. She thought to herself.

BattleMaps | Chronicles of Kassen | HeroLab Files | Loot Sheet

Rayla climbs up into the tree and is met with a grisly sight. Four corpses hang from the ropes. The trap was set to leave the corpses hanging around anyone who set off the trap. The bodies are stripped naked and are mutilated with missing jaws, tongues, and genitals. On all four of them, a strange rune has been carved into their foreheads.

Note, that all four corpses are of men.

Björn takes no pains to conceal his interest in ogling the barbarian's form as she strips. "Og það er það besta að fara þar sem við höfum komið." He shakes his head at this remark and moves to stand on the rope, keeping it straight and taut for the woman's climb.

Helena waits at the foot of the tree as Rayla makes her climb. "What do you see?" she calls up, keeping an eye on Björn as he ogles the woman.

He's not the only one ogling. ;)

That's how seduction works, subtly. :)

Male Human (þursfyrðar) Ranger (Freebooter) 1

Skäne nods at his oar-brothers words as he assists him on the rope;

Casting his eyes once again skyward he grins;

"What do we not see would be a better question with a shorter answer!"

Male Half-Elf Wizard(Abjurer)/3 HP 18/18 | Init +1 | AC 11/ T11/ FF10 | Saves Fort+3, Ref+2, Will+5 | Perception +11

Like the others, Kylar enjoys the newfound view of Rayla's physique - but keeps the commentary internal.

"A good bit of flesh is easy on the eyes, but much, much nicer under the fingertips..." he muses. Then his eyes narrow as he scolds himself. "Focus on the task, wizard. Lust won't do you any good if a goblin puts a spear through your balls."

Tearing his eyes away from Rayla as she climbs, Kylar turns his attention once again to watch for threats from the forest.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

Rayla climbs up the tree, she notices the gazes of the men, but she seems to pay little attention. "A few more branches... one moment.."

She pulls herself up, takes a deep breath and looks at nets which hold the trap. The her breath stops for a five heartbeats or so as she is shocked to look straight into a humiliated, dead body. "Bodies" she calls back down, just loud enough to be heard on the floor and obviously somewhat shaken. "Four dead, all men. Seems like they are victims of some occult ritual..." She closes her eyes and tries to handle the horror for a moment. "While that may give us away, we can't leave them hanging here. Careful though, they are... not a pleasant sight."

She tries to breath through her mouth for a moment to avoid the obnoxious smell but the insects swirling around her make her reconsider at once - the last she needs is one flying into her mouth. 'Alright, don't think about it, let's get on with it. she thinks as she carefully test how the first of the victims is hung up.

"Unless there is anything else attached to the trap we should be able to let them down if Björn and Skane secured the line leading up here and someone else triggers the trap."

BattleMaps | Chronicles of Kassen | HeroLab Files | Loot Sheet

Wilhelm looks like someone has slugged him in the gut when Rayla reports her findings to the others. He slumps against a tree nearby and tries to steady himself.

"Damn Gobs. World'd be better off if they all just burned."

Male Half-Elf Wizard(Abjurer)/3 HP 18/18 | Init +1 | AC 11/ T11/ FF10 | Saves Fort+3, Ref+2, Will+5 | Perception +11

Kylar's ears perk up at the words occult ritual.

"What kind of ritual?" he calls softly up towards Rayla. Then he realizes she probably doesn't know enough about such things to tell him anything useful. Kylar looks askance at the rope.

"Take hold of a branch," he says to Rayla. "I need to see this."

DM-Salsa, please give Kylar the benefit of the doubt here. :) If attempting to climb up and view the bodies WILL NOT cause Rayla to fall, he will attempt it. Very cautiously.

Climb: 1d20 ⇒ 6

Hoping for a rope bonus. Plus, if he's obviously not going to succeed, Kylar would give up. So, Salsa, what's the verdict? ;)

BattleMaps | Chronicles of Kassen | HeroLab Files | Loot Sheet

Kylar joins Rayla in the tree branches. after struggling a bit to get up there.

Kylar:
You notice a few things.
First, if this is some sort of ritual, you've never heard about it and probably want to keep it that way.

Second, the rune is foreign to you, but it appears similar to some older elven runes.

Third, there's no lingering aura of magic.

Rayla:
One thing you notice, besides the bodies, is the smell is much worse up here.

Female Angelkin Barbarian 1

What do you mean? Beyond what was to be expected after I could already smell them from down below?

Rayla helps Kylar by pulling him up at his rope.

"Well, watch it... here secure yourself with the rope." She tries to take a deep breath and soon realizes her mistake, coughing. "You should have waited until we let them down, though."

"This is a trap isn't it? Might the bodies be ... prepared with some alchemical substance? Or so to spread disease when the hit the ground?" She covers her nose and looks a little closer at the jaw and genital wounds.

Heal: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16 She looks for anything that is not directly a consequence of the wound or the decay.

"Well be extremely careful as you let them down. I'll lead the rope from up here."

She looks around in the tree to make sure there are no further caches with nasty surprises up in the tree crown.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

BattleMaps | Chronicles of Kassen | HeroLab Files | Loot Sheet

Rayla:
You don't see any signs of them leaving surprises. It appears that this was set up to spook anyone on the path. You also do not see any other "Surprises."

A few minutes of work sees the bodies to the ground. Wilhelm asks the others to help gather stones to build a cairn for the dead. By the time they are laid to rest and Wilhelm has said a prayer over them, it is almost dark. A short way up the path is a clearing where it appears the goblins laid an ambush. Any tracks are almost two days old, and very jumbled.

Wilhelm prepares supper as camp as set.

Profession(Cook): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28

And as it turns out he's a damn good cook.

Okay, I need a watch order, but feel free to talk and maybe ask Wilhelm about the area.

Female Human Oracle (life) 4 | AC 19, T 11, FF 18 | hp 8/31 | CMD 16 | F +4, R +3, W +4 | Init +2| Perc +4 | low-light vision, darkvision 30 ft | Channel Positive Energy 3/5 | 1st-level spells 6/7 | 2nd-level spells 1/4

"This wouldn't be our missing patrol, would it?" Helena asks Wilhelm as she helps gather stones. "And do you really think goblins did this? It seems to take more forethought than they're known for."

When camp is set, she eats, thanking their guide for the meal - she feels far more comfortable when her belly is full. "I suppose you've all figured out by now that I'm not as blind as I seem," she confesses after a long silence. "In truth, I can see... about as far as those mushrooms." She points to a cluster of fungi, some thirty feet away. "But beyond that, everything is too blurry for me to see. Strangely, though, my vision isn't hampered by darkness. Whether it's high noon or midnight, I can see perfectly - but only in that distance."

I figure it's good for the party to know Helena's limitations. By now they would have noticed that she doesn't act like someone who's completely blind. Also, she could take any watch, but will still need 8 hours of rest to get her spells back. Having three full casters in the party might complicate the order a little.

BattleMaps | Chronicles of Kassen | HeroLab Files | Loot Sheet

Burial
"Most of them. Lady Gweniver is still missing." He sighs, his shoulders bowed.

"I can't imagine who else. I can see bandits stripping them, but what happened to these lads?" Wilhelm shakes his head.

Supper
"No need to thank me. Ye lot have agreed to help Hammenholdt, and fixing ye a meal or three is the least I can do." Some of his good cheer seems to return when Helena thanks him. His expression turns thoughtful when she mentions her sight.

"Aye, so that's how ye made it through the woods. Only met a few who could see in tha dark like that, and I envy 'em. I'm just an old hunter and guide, and me eyes aren't what they used to be."

He takes another bite of his meal and looks to the party.
"Where are ye from? All of ye. We're out here with our charge, but beyond looking fer one lost soul, I know nothing about ye."

After having some of Wilhelm delicious food, Delilah sits next to him and says, "You know, I love a man that can cook, especially like this." Flashing him a little smile, she set down her dishes and moved to another seat by the fire.

Hearing Helena's explanation of her limited vision, the witch couldn't help but ask, "So what happened? Were you born like that, an accident, or an abusive lover?" As the Tiefling waited for a response, she opened one of her pouches. A little thrush popped out and perched on her finger. Delilah began stroking it tiny little breast, cooing softly.

When Wilhelm asked about them, she gave him a playful look and responded, "You want to know about me? I can certainly accommodate you." She blew him a kiss.

I'll take last watch. Girl's got to have her beauty sleep. ;)

"It's turned out to be a blessing, though many think it a curse... back home, seeing in the dark was taken as a sign of dark pacts." Helena is silent for another moment, before responding to Delilah.

"I was actually born completely blind. For the first twelve years of my life, I lived in complete darkness. Then, I got lost in the woodlands, and exhausted myself trying to find my way home. When I woke... I could see. My mother called it a miracle. To this day, I know not what happened... but considering I awoke also able to speak the language of the Fey, I'm inclined to think they had something to do with it.

"I'm from Tairesia, to the south - a small town called Lenwood. I haven't led an interesting life - I just developed the wanderlust that comes to so many."

"Exactly what I did not want to wait for," Kylar replies as he studies the marks upon the bodies. In his study he barely seems to notice the gore itself. "They could hold magic, triggered by that very event."

Rayla wrote:
"This is a trap isn't it? Might the bodies be ... prepared with some alchemical substance? Or so to spread disease when the hit the ground?"

Kylar is silent for a few seconds as he looks closer at the foreheads of the corpses, and the symbol upon the flesh.

"Could have been... but I do not think is." Then he calls down. "Should be safe enough to lower them. No active magic here."

Unless it is hidden better than I am capable of discovering - but if that is the class of foe we are up against, we may already be doomed. Kylar hopes that it is simply the sadistic work of common goblins they have found.

After they bury the bodies, Kylar accepts some of the surprisingly excellent supper Wilhelm offers them. He nods his appreciation as he gobbles it down.

Wilhelm wrote:

When the moment comes when the others look to him for some offering, he shrugs. "Born in Nashec. Didn't stay longer than necessary," he says, and an involuntary twitch of contempt at the corner of his mouth betrays his distate for his home country.

The burial

Skäne stands alongside his oar-brother as the others gather stones. He impassively smoking his pipe with a curious disinterest at the proceedings. When the last stone is set he spits upon the ground with a grimace.

The supper

Skäne eats his fill, then offers a comment to his companion, grunting a laugh as he wipes his beard clean of stew;

"Þessi maður suður kokkar vel! Hann mun gera einhver góð kona í einn dag! Har!"

þurstunga (Giant):

This man of the south cooks well! He will make someone a good wife one day! Har!

The big Northerner answers Wilhelm's query with frosty words...

"We are þursfyrðar man-of-the-South. We sing well. We raid better. We fight best. There. Now you know us."

... afore ignoring the fire-side tattle to ask Kylar his thoughts on the corpses;

"Friend álfur-blóð. What did your keen eyes and sharp mind glean of the dead we found?"

Kylar sips from a waterskin as he contemplates the question, idly drawing runic figures in the dirt with his free hand.

"Little of certainty," he eventually answers Skane. "The pattern of mutilation suggested a certain intent, but I did not recognize it. It served no magical purpose that I could detect. It may have been simple cruelty to the slain."

"If they were, in fact, already slain when it happened," Kylar reflects grimly.

"The symbol on their foreheads, though..." he continues, seeing the sinuous, almost-elven curves in his mind. "They did not seem typical of goblins."
