Seemingly unaware that it is the sole opponent remaining, the dretch attacks Pavanna again, this time drawing blood with fangs and claws.
Pavanna takes 9 damage.
Finish him.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 5 + 1 + 1 = 16
damage: 2d4 + 8 ⇒ (4, 4) + 8 = 16
Olivius maintains the devastating momentum of his swing and steps back to bring it to bear on the last foe.
In his mind, he can only see broken bodies in school livery as summoned feinds stalked him with grinning faces.

The demon howls in pain as Olivious' rips open its belly with a mighty blow.
Thirzin Bronzebeard |
PA Sickened: 1d20 + 6 - 3 ⇒ (19) + 6 - 3 = 22
Damage: 1d10 + 4 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 3 - 2 = 8
Feeling exhilarated by the craze of battle, it overcomes the sickened visions running through his mind. His dergar almost crushes through the face of his enemy. Only a few inches separate this heavy metal ball from crushing through its skull.
Pavanna Alazario |
Ahem: I believe that’s 5 damage in all, GM. Remember Pavanna’s DR2/cold iron? ;-)
Turning away from dispatching the first dretch, Pavanna lets out a strangled cry as its companion drives its fangs into her right forearm, just above her wrist, seemingly meeting more resistance from her tiefling skin than the leather of her vambrace. Though Olivius’ ranseur drives the demon back from her, a parting blow from its claws rakes along the edge of her left greave, leaving shallow but bloody gashes in her calf.
Even as the dretch howls and regathers itself, Pavanna takes a half-a-breath to test the strength in her injured limbs. The leg screams with pain, but will bear her weight for a few moments yet; the arm is leaking blood down into her hand, but her grip on her mace has not weakened or slipped. This ends now, she decides grimly, launching a brutal backhand swing at the last demon standing.
Free action: maintain archaeologist’s luck (+1, 4/6 rounds remaining)
Standard action: Pavanna SMITE! ‘green’ dretch
cold-iron light mace + IC + AL: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 2 + 1 = 14
cold-iron light mace + IC + AL: 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 1 = 8
And it looks like that’s two for two! Admittedly, that hit might actually be superfluous... but when dealing with demons, ‘overkill’ is entirely acceptable.
Pavanna’s ‘lawgiver’ smashes into the right side of the dretch’s misshapen head just as Thirzin’s mighty dorn dergar crashes into the left. The demon’s head shatters like an apple caught between anvil and hammer, and its all-but-decapitated body falls over backwards, as stiff as a plank.
Assuming that’s the end of combat for now....
Even as the headless demon collapses, Pavanna turns away from it, for the moment sparing Olivius and Thirzin only an approving/thankful nod before she looks to the fallen Noro. Gritting her teeth against the pain in her calf, she crosses to where the brawler lies and kneels beside her, mustering the Inheritor’s power through herself in gentler fashion.
bardic cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 Aw, what are ya, RNG?
DM-Salsa |
With the crunching of bones, the demon falls dead.
End of combat.
Olivius_Telraven |
Olivius lowers his weapon only after the vision from his past fades. He is breathing heavily and his eyes seem haunted.
I am whole... he responds.
Asuriel Arktaros |
Asuriel will beckon everyone away from the bodies so that she has enough distance to channel. She will heal those that are injured for 7 and asks if anyone still needs further healing.
Asuriel heals for 8.
2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7
Horatio A Aldebrandt |
"It means, Ping," Horatio interjects smoothly, "that Olives here has been in worse scraps than this. After all, it's a long road from here to Cheliax, and the role of caravan guard does necessitate some unfortunate fights from time to time." He places a hand on Ping's shoulder, giving her a reassuring smile, but when he glances back up at Olivius, the look in his eyes suggests the older man elaborate no further.
Bluff if needed: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
He whistles to Pavanna, before tossing her the wand. "Here, you may want this back. As for the rest of us, do we press on, or do we go back? I think it's been a rough day for some," he adds, glancing across at Noro and Asuriel.
Olivius_Telraven |
Olivius looks to Horatio and nods. To Ping, it's a confirmation of the bluff. To Horatio, it's an acknowledgement of a debt owed for not making him elaborate just now. Maybe later, when he had a good night's sleep and his dead classmate's eyes don't follow him quite so closely.
Noro Kas |
Noro was barely conscious the wounds still present but much of the bleeding stopped (for now at least.) Asuriel's healing helps some but she can only give her a glare at the question about further healing.
She pulls out a bottle of sealord wine and pops the cork. she takes a swig and goes to Olivius she silently hands him the bottle.
we need a resht, but where?
Thirzin Bronzebeard |
Thirzin just slowly shakes his head.
"It seems like there's really not anywhere too safe right now. The hardest part is whether to even leave or not..especially without knowing if we've cleared this nasty lot out." he runs his fingers through his beard in thought.
Asuriel Arktaros |
Trying to find some humor in a grim situation, the oracle leans in to Ping and whispers "Perhaps you should turn his hair green."
She leans up and winks and turns back to Noro. Asuriel takes Noro's comment in stride and calls upon the light once more to help close whatever wounds may still be outstanding. She places a hand on the barbarians shoulder and asks, "Those were quite the blows you sustained, is there any further I can do to help?"
CPE: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9
9 More HP. 3/5 CPE remaining.
Pavanna Alazario |
Thanks for the channels, Asuriel — those bring Pavanna back up to full health. ;-)
Bluff roll: 22
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 d’oh!
For her part, Pavanna arches an eyebrow at that comment about ‘the Blood’, but lets it pass. Olivius said almost nothing of his past when they travelled in the caravan together, and she’s not about to start prying now.He whistles to Pavanna, before tossing her the wand. "Here, you may want this back."
Though the touch of Sarenrae’s light provided by Asuriel has closed her wounds, it’s done nothing to clean Pavanna’s hands, and her wand slips through blood-slick fingers to clatter to the floor. She gives Horatio a rueful smile as she wipes her hand on her trousers, then stoops to retrieve the wand. “Thank you, Horatio. I should’ve given you more warning about that toss — sorry.”
Now that the band has breathing room, Pavanna touches the wand to Noro again, adding its powers to Asuriel’s to tend the brawler’s remaining injuries.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 44 charges remaining
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 43 charges remaining
If my maths is correct, that brings Noro back to 31 hp, just one shy of full. Do we think that’s enough?
“I don’t know if you were unlucky to be mauled like that, or lucky it didn’t kill you on the spot,” she says to Noro, tucking the wand away. On impulse, she slips her sword-hand around the Tian woman and gives her a brief one-armed hug. You scared us! I’m so glad you’re OK now. Hoping to lighten the mood a little, she adds a rueful half-joke. “On balance, you might want to stay away from any card-games for the next few days.”
She steps back after a moment, retrieving her sword and taking in the discussion about resting or leaving.
"As for the rest of us, do we press on, or do we go back? I think it's been a rough day for some," he adds, glancing across at Noro and Asuriel.
"It seems like there's really not anywhere too safe right now. The hardest part is whether to even leave or not..especially without knowing if we've cleared this nasty lot out." he runs his fingers through his beard in thought.
“We could probably push on, but I’m not sure how smart it would be in our current state,” Pavanna shrugs. “A suggestion? Let’s make sure we didn’t leave anything at our backs before we go any further in. We came down here to prevent a pincer attack, not get caught in one.” She points down the unexplored corridor with her glowing sword. “We check what’s down this passage, then search the antechambers in the Runewell room. I’m guessing they’ll all be unoccupied, but we should be certain. Once that’s done, we see how we stand and re-assess whether we should push on, dig in, or bug out.
“Opinions?”Horatio A Aldebrandt |
"I hear you there, big guy," Horatio sighs, running a hand through his hair. "Lead on, then."
Noro Kas |
Noro nods a thanks to Pav, I've had worshe. shome you've sheen. she replies. but the look in Noro's eyes indicates she hopes to never go through that again.
She glances toward Horatio as he goes about his business, talking with Olives, she whispers something in Tien.
今少なくとも、私は私の周りの粘着する理由があると思います
At least now, I think I have a reason to be sticking around
Noro gets up, ready to move on. she stretches some, with the tears in her clothing somewhat still coated in blood, Noro's physique isn't really all that bad. letsh move on then, Pav had a good idea.
Noro takes the lead heading down the indicated passage.

Please place yourselves in the highlighted corridor in the order you wnat to be in. Ping is going to be towards the back. Also, I need a perception check from everybody.

Right before the door opens, you hear a whisper like sound, like you'd hear from an owl flapping its wings.
You hear a soft rattling breath coming from behind, and the slap of a bare foot on stone.
Noro, you get to act in the surprise round.
Olivius opens the door to the chamber. A fountain full of clear water splashes quietly in the middle of the room. More alarmingly, there are two heads flapping about that shriek in rage when the door is opened. To make matters worse, you hear a voice echoing from behind, "Korvus hungry. Korvus smell... smell gnome-flesh. Korvus will eat! Yes eat!"
Noro, you're up. You get one action.

Pavanna’s eyes widen as she takes in the chamber — and its occupants. Vargouilles!? This place is teeming with demons!
But the split-second of warning granted to her by that recognition is not enough to harden her against what follows. The creatures’ unholy shrieks reverberate along her nerves, locking her limbs into a statue-like rictus. The only saving grace in the matter — if it can be called that — is that she still has a death-grip on her sword and shield, so if she’s to die, she’ll still fall as a soldier.
DM-Salsa |
Or not, that works too. Fortunately, if you live, you get to level to 3rd.
