Tal Bernard Mainz |
Tal hears the crossbow bolts fly as he double moves downstairs to get to whatever is firing at Richard!
Richard Holysmith |
Fort Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Richard shrugs as the crossbow nicks his exposed swordarm.
"You'll need to do more than that to stop me, my dear! You'll need more that that to stop ALL of us!"
He moves 5 feet west off the ladder and begins to Inspire Courage.
"Why, our heroic exploits are known far and wide! You should lay down your arms and surrender, and we promise no harm."
Watching the women reload their crossbows though, he shrugs.
"But alas, your wish for violence will be fulfilled!"
Inspire Courage +2 is active! +2 attack/damage, stacks with Heroism.
Girolamo Savonarola |
Savonarola heads down the stairs, and stabs at one of the women who are still off-guard.
+1 Alchemical Silver Elven Branched Spear: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 9 + 2 = 23, for 1d8 + 5 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 2 + (5, 1) = 18 damage.

Round 6
Girolamo heads down the stairs and spears the nun who did not fire her crossbow.
The door heaves from the slams of the fire elemental.

And the last attack Girolamo
Sister 6 Flurry: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Lorelei Truth-speaker |
Lorelei slips past Richard and Girolamo invisibly and stands behind one of the nuns. Lorelei stands in the space right below Girolamo and attacks the nun under Richard's icon.
She thrusts at the sister with her rapier.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 10
Damage: 1d6 + 2 + 2 + 3d6 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 2 + (6, 6, 3) = 24 Includes sneak attack since she's invisible.
Unfortunately, Lorelei misses horribly and appears visible to everyone despite not harming the nun at all.
No! Critical miss! Haha.
Richard Holysmith |
Richard sees Lorelei appear out of thin air.
"See! The gods are on our side, and they bring forth new allies to strengthen our resolve!"
Richard realizes he's flanking, so he maintains his bardsong and attacks the woman.
Cold Iron Longsword, Flanking, Inspire Courage: 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 2 + 2 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 2 = 4
"A shame your efforts will end here!"
Inspire Courage +2 is in effect.
Girolamo Savonarola |
With a frown, Savonarola attempts to finish off the injured nun.
+1 Alchemical Silver Elven Branched Spear: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 9 + 2 = 30, for 1d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 5 + 2 = 8 damage.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Tal laughs at the futile efforts of the woman trying to attack him. Is that all you have? I expected much worse after the warm greeting from your fiery friend upstairs.
Tal then proceeds to lay into the women before him with a cleave attack starting with the one in front of Richard.
power attack 1d20 + 12 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 12 - 2 + 2 = 19 for 1d8 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 10 + 2 = 20
cleave attack 1d20 + 12 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 12 - 2 + 2 = 20 for 1d8 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 10 + 2 = 19
Interesting...the damage and to hit amounts are the same just flipped.

Round 7
Girolamo tries to finish off the wounded nun, but in spite of a valiant effort, the nun still stands.
From up the stairs, you hear the fire elemental break through the door.
Lorelei misses in her attack.
Tal injures the nun in front of him and Richard.
Richard just misses in his attack.
One nun attacks Tal:
Sister 3 Flurry: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Sister 3 Flurry: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
The other attacks Richard:

"Note to self: We need a new exit." Richard muses as he hears the door get smashed. At his point the nun punches him in the face and kicks him in the ribs. He remains steady and swings at her again.
Cold Iron Longsword, Flanking, Inspire Courage: 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 2 + 2 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 2 = 6
And misses utterly.
Inspire Courage +2 is in effect.
Lorelei Truth-speaker |
Lorelei grunts in pain as the nun delivers a painful blow to her stomach.
She thrusts at the nun in front of her with her rapier. The one in the square below Richard.

Tal Bernard Mainz |
That was not turning into a good fight. His companions were too spread out to help each other an they were getting flanked. Barking out orders Tal tries to bring some focus to the group. Close up people. WE are getting flanked. Focus on one at a time to reduce heir numbers.! Meanwhile Tal continued to press his attack.

Savonarola sighs in annoyance, and tries to finish off the wounded Nun.

Tal looks at Richard as he tries to attack the nun and misses horribly. The rush of combat was flowing in his blood and eh can not help but remark wittily at the bird handler. It is a pity that your blade and aim are not as sharp as your tongue or wit. Perhaps I should teach you the fine art of swordsmanship. At your level it may only take a year or two.
Couldn't resist after getting a confirmed crit Richard. Also somehow I see your character as a perfect Elan from Order of the Stick with his puns.
also why are the crits always at the end of combat? Never the first hit it seems.

Round 10
Girolamo finishes off the last sister and you hear the elemental moving upstairs.
Tal makes sure the sister is dead, while Richard misses her corpse. :D
This cavernous chamber is cool and musty. An iron flight of spiral stairs rises in the room’s center, while the brick-lined walls of the large room are heavy with countless wooden shelves. In places, the shelves extend out into the room itself, creating something of a maze. Resting on the shelves are hundreds and hundreds of polished black pottery urns, each with a series of spidery scratches on the side that could be writing. Here and there between the shelves, in nooks and alcoves along the walls, hard cots provide spartan beds.
Next Up: Lorelei
Tactical Map Updated.
Richard Holysmith |
Richard has a good laugh. "Sherix does call me an optimistic fool. Maybe my mercy holds my blade back a little too much."
DM RichD |
Here are the game mechanics for the room: A character who can read Infernal can fnd the proper container with a DC 30 Perception check. This check takes 5 minutes of work—each additional check takes another 5 minutes but gains a cumulative +4 bonus on the roll. Therefore if Lorelei makes the perception check it will take five minutes. What are the rest of you doing? (I can tell you that the fire elemental will continue to approach the stairs!)
Richard Holysmith |
I have 3 options:
I can also read Infernal, but I only have a +9 Perception check so I can never hit DC 30. I would auto-assist Lorelei if that is possible.
If someong has a good perception check, I can cast Tongues so you can read Infernal for 50 minutes.
I can use Silent Image to hopefully hide us from the elemental, as well. DC 14 Will Save.
"Hmm. I can try to make an image of a wall. Maybe the elemental won't follow us if it can't find us."
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Seeing the extensive amount of information around the place Tal knows that they will or have enough time till the elemental reaches them. Digging out his curative wand he ha ds it to Giralimo. I can red infernal as well but with that big fiery thing up there we won’t have enough timetable o search everything down here. If you guys have anything that can boost my defenses or att1cks more I will head upstairs and try to keep it busy and buy you as much time as I can. Giralamo, If you could heal me with the wand I would appreciate it as it will hit me eventually.
Looks like round 3 with the big baddie. Tal will take that heroism to help his to hit as He will be fighting defensively as well. Should boost his ac to 31and if Tal can keep him squeezed then he stands a good chance to keep him busy for you to search.
Richard Holysmith |
Richard nods to Tal and casts Heroism upon him.
"Good luck, oh valiant Tal."
Lorelei Truth-speaker |
"Are you sure?" she asks Tal. "It looks like it could take some time."
Seeing Tal's determination, Lorelei quickly gets to work scanning the shelves...
Perception: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 13 + 2 = 35 Oh, yeah! Happy dance!
After scanning a few shelves, Lorelei tells the others, "I've got this. You guys go help Tal."
DM RichD |
So it sounds like the plan is to send Tal up to face the elemental with some support while Lorelei finds the ashes.
I believe that it is still 6 rounds a minute (correct me if I'm wrong.) Therefore Tal and the elemental have thirty rounds to tango. @Tal: Give me the your first 10 attacks @ AC 21 DR5.

Girolamo Savonarola |
Seeing that Tal is going to be incredibly foolish brave, Savonarola does his best to help.
Evil Eye to impose a -2 penalty on AC, and attack rolls, and Cackle to make sure that they stick. That should turn some of those hits into misses.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Do those attacks also involve it being squeezed and should I account for evil eye?
DM RichD |
Dang! Forgot about the squeezing so between that and the evil eye so that means AC was 15. So that means Tal would have defeated the elemental at Round 9. Therefore, only 1 attack hit (3rd Round)
Attack: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 6) + 4 = 12
Fire: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6
Therefore 1 Reflex Saving throw DC18

Tal takes a weary walk down the steps but has a triumphant grin upon his face. The fire demon is no more. Unless we run into other foes this place should be ours to inspect at our leisure.
When Lorelei finds the urn quickly Tal just shakes his head in wonder. Perhaps I did not need to face off against the demon after all. None the less it is one less problem that we or others will have to face in the future. Excellent job finding it so quickly Lorelei. Shall we bring it back now for safe keeping?
Looking at Giralamo with the healing wand. Would you be so kind as to use some healing upon me good sir. I do not want to be taken by surprise by something else in my weakened state before we get back.
Thinking just a few hits to get above 20.
Richard Holysmith |
"Incredible. I could learn a thing or two. That tower shield isn't my style, though." He laughs.
"The urn. Yes, we should hold onto that. They ruined her body but at least they kept it organized."
Richard takes one last look at the fallen women. "We should... take whatever we can and get out of here. Someone is bound to check up on them."
Girolamo Savonarola |
Savonarola nods.
"Certainly."
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4.
He then helps to methodically search the bodies of the defeated nuns.
Lorelei Truth-speaker |
Turning to see Tal wounded but proud, Lorelei smiles. "Well, don't you look like the cat that got the cream. If that cat had just survived an inferno." Holding up the urn proudly, she bows. "Thank you, thank you." she jokes. "Not as impressive as what you just got up to, I imagine, but I'll take the praise."
She carefully puts the urn into her back pack, and then moves around helping the others rob the nuns out of house and home.
Looting the nuns and the building for anything of value.

The nuns have the following x6:
potion of cure moderate wounds
potion of lesser restoration
masterwork bladed scarf
masterwork crossbow with 10 poisoned bolts
The nuns lived very simply i.e.cheap and besides a ton of urns, there is nothing else of value in the building.
It is getting late in the day, do you risk going back or do you camp out for the night in the Massacre House and head back in the morning?
Richard Holysmith |
Richard shudders. "I'd rather not spend the night here. Too much death."
He would risk traveling at night..
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Tal looks to see the resolve in the faces of his companions. Clearly they all wanted out of this place. Frankly the dead did not bother him at all as long as they remained dead and unmoving. Still if they wished to brave the night terrors then he would not abandon them. If we are going back then let us hurry onward from this place.

The streets are dark and deserted. Doors and windows are shuttered tight and there are no sounds but your footsteps on the cobblestone. You see movement out of your peripheral vision and unnatural sounds emanate from many alleyways. Despite this, you arrive at the safe house unmolested. A concerned Arael greets you at the door.
