Mera finds an opening to insert herself, "Sleeping of sleeping..."

She pivots to face Naberius, but speaks to Monday. "How were your accommodations last night Monday? Were you comfortable?"

Yes, Speaking not sleeping, thanks! :)

Mera raises her brows and tilts her head to the side slightly as she studies Naberius, "I see."

Spinning to face Tal she points at him with her wine glass, "I agree with Tal by the way. I do not think we should be tipping our hand too much as of yet. I do believe that at first there will be good intentions it will not take too long before our message will be shaped a hundred different ways to fit others agendas. We must take care in this or risk having the scales turned against us."

"Very good. Since this issue is directly tied to our popularity, it can wait until we deal justice to the miserable Tieflings," the man answered after a long period of silence, turning to face Janiven.

"I have an idea: knowing their lair and of the lookout, we can formulate a plan."

He looked to the rest, and began rolling up the posters, leaving a mental note to address this further after the mission's success.
He then pulled out a paper and a pencil from his pouch, sketching the specified region quickly.

"We know they are holed in here, and they strike small shops. We will spread news of a place suiting their needs, and set up an ambush for the action force. After they are dealt with, we follow the trail to their lair, and deal with the remaining forces within. So we are not overwhelmed, I will prepare a contingency or two.
"Since they have a...grace period between their strikes, we must ready ourselves when they next move.
"

He paused for a moment, falling silently as he racked his brains. Gems, money, and weapons...what could come next?

Using deductive reasoning and all he's heard about from the Tieflings from Janiven and the streets, he will try to figure out the next possible target.

Intelligence check to predict next possible target?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Stuffed animals? he thought strangely. He shook his head.

If you allow a retry, I can attempt again.

Intelligence check to predict next possible target?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

Wow. If I can use that and accurately anticipate the next target, Raveen will try to find a shop that suits their needs within spitting distance of the Tieflings' lair, so that the team's actions will be quicker than the response time of the Bastards.

"In any case, we must prepare...I will study this further and come up with a fitting plan soon. Kindly have faith in me," he added, addressing the group.

Nodding approvingly at Raveen's plan, Naberius says, "'Divide and conquer' sounds like a sensible tactic, assuming we can lure them into a trap..."

Looking at the map Raveen is drawing of the general area, he adds, "We will have to make sure that we do not draw unwanted attention from the law while we deal with these scoundrels... The temple they are using seems to be safely out of the way, but you will have to choose the ambush site carefully. They are not likely to strike at anything that is too close to their base of operations either, correct?"

Tal nods at Mera as she eloquently says in very little words what he was trying to say. Thanks for making that sound better Mera.

Turning to the others as Raveen talks of an ambush...The idea is sound of dividing them and splitting their forces but what if we guess wrong? Are we willing to take that chance and let another couple die while we wait? Speaking like the upfront fighter he is, I would prefer to take the fight to them and ambush them as they leave their hideout rather than risk a possibly wrong but potentially better tactically sound location.

Shaking his head, the conjurer says, "Attacking them somewhere where they can warn the others defeats the purpose, and doing so in the open could alert unwanted attention from the Dottari. It is better if we can lure them somewhere more private, and cut off their chances of escaping back to their hideout."

Thinking further on the matter, he adds, "The Bastard's mode of operation appears to include periods of inactivity, so we should have some time to prepare. Instead of trying to deduce where they will strike next, we will just have to make sure that their next target is one of our choosing. I have full faith that Raveen can arrange this satisfactorily..."

"Had we more resources, I would have them clash against one another," the man said with a small grin, clearly amused by the thought. "But as it is, we should divide them. Remember that the intelligence gathered by Janiven and I might be faulty: they might be more than ten--they might even have allies! I would rather risk a calculated assault on a diminished force, regardless of how diminished it truly is. If push comes to shove...we might have to burn the shrine...assuming that Tieflings burn."

And they might not, considering their parentage.

The nat 1 or 20 on the knowledge check might give Raveen some ideas.

Janiven and Arael listen to the suggestions and the plans being made. After a few moments, Arael will say to the group. About divide and conquer, it is a good plan, but we would have to be sure we lure them to our ambush site. It might be a lot of work to just..eh...eliminate maybe four measly tieflings. Having said that, the main goal is no casualties on our side. He glances at Mera. So if you all want to get rid of some of their number, Janiven will support you.
We will also have to consider that they might beef up their security when their strike force doesn't return. If we decide to assault the temple, the greatest obstacle is the sentry in the bell tower. Get rid of him and we can practically go up to the front door. Do any of you have any ideas on how to deal with him? Because of their darkvision, we can't even count on the cover of night.

Janiven will add, Because of the danger of the mission, our friends on the other side of the door probably should not be used. They can be used for support, but as far as an attacking force, they are still too green and untrained. She will add with a chuckle, No matter how skilled Vitti thinks he is now with his club. Oh and Master Naberius, there is a room off of the altar where the priests would prepare themselves for service. Perhaps that might suit your needs, but it might be a tad cramped. So tell me, which one of our friends out there caught your ear?

When it sounds like the majority wish to go along with Raveen's plan Tal shrugs his shoulders seeing that his proposal was in the minority. Very well then, we shall give Raveen a chance. Raveen may be able to set up a likely location to be hit but that does not mean that that is the location they will choose. I do not like the randomness of the plan but I will go along with it if that is what the rest of you want. However if it seems that they strike a different location than the one that we set up then can we agree to strike at their heart rather then let them continue to pick off helpless people in their sleep?

When the talk resumes by Areal and Janiven of assaulting the temple and the description of the tower height is revealed Tal sits back and just rubs his chin for a while. How far can a tiefling see in the dark? I am wondering as the only thing I have that could silence the guard is a javelin. At 60 ft I could still hit it but if a Tiefling can see to 120 ft then there is no way I can hit him. Are there other buildings nearby that can be used to hide our approach or our assault on the tiefling guard? Even if he can see 120ft in the dark but there is a building in the way we could approach unseen till we step out from the shadows to attack him.

Looking to the others that are more knowledgable than he is Tal continues his questioning on tactics to get a better understanding of their opponents abilities. What other abilities do tieflings usually have that we might need to prepare ourselves for? Are they resistant to certain weapons or have any abilities that can aid them in a fight other than seeing in darkness? Do they have any weaknesses that we can exploit?

Looking at Areal and Janiven at the talk of the others in the room outside the door, I agree with you that they are not ready yet for something like this. Ermolos has promise and some of the others have handy skill sets but they are too green and need more training and lighter tasks to start. Clearing the sewers o goblins near here is enough for them I would hop pe at this point and still make them feel useful in protecting our hideout.

I would have Vasco join me--he could cover any mistakes I make: mislead any accidental noises by sounding as if he made them--ravens are common in Westcrown, I see.

Knowledge (planes): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

Settling into his familiar lecturing tone, Naberius explains, "A tiefling's abilities might vary depending on their heritage, though most share some of their forebear's resistance to elemental forces. Nothing you need to worry about. A sword should work on them just as well as on any mortal man. Most of them also possess some sorcerous talents, even if the majority never pursues them. Still, most know instictually how to snuff out nonmagical sources of light, so we might want to prepare for a fight in the dark, where they have the advantage..."

He concludes, "Again, these abilities might vary, but there are too many possible variations for me to account for without a multiple-part lecture into the heredity of fiends..."

Turning nonce again to Arael and Janiven, he queries, "Would the alarm be sounded by ringing the church bell, or do you think they have an alternate method? We should be prepared for the possibility that Raveen fails to eliminate the sentry and the alarm is raised..."

The man thought for a moment, and then said, "But there is more than one way to skin a hellcat. We may wait on an alleyway instead, and have one of us act as bait, luring them into the ambush. If you give Anna Tarvi's pearls, I guess she would prove to be an alluring bait. Let us call that Plan B. Mind you--this is Plan B for a reason: so far they have been interested in break-ins only. We cannot guarantee a success if we appeal to their banditry."

Naberius agrees, "I would vastly prefer Plan A, as well. We need to be able to choose where we strike and surprise them completely to make this worth the risk. None of them must escape..."

Tal takes in the information that Naberius relays to him. The picture painted looked pretty bleak though. So not only can they see in darkness but they can create darkness themselves. Is there any way to counter their abilities to level the playing field? If not then why do we not consider an assault during the day so we can at least see what is going on? Also something to consider is that if we go at night then we will have to worry about the shadow beasts as well.

Sighing at the warrior's inattentiveness, Naberius adds, "As I said, they can extinguish nonmagical light sources. There is a spell that creates a powerful burst of light, which could counter their little tricks. Unfortunately, that spell is beyond my capabilities at the moment. If I could get my hands on a scroll which contains the spell, I could certainly use that in the case of an emergency. Unfortunately, those tend to be quite expensive..."

A scroll of daylight would cost 375 gp, which is kind of costly at the moment. We might want to get one just in case. Any other ideas?

Unless we are fighting in direct sunlight, I don't think going by day would help much. Anything below that will cause us problems when we get hit with darkness, regardless of the time of day.

I do not like the randomness of the plan but I will go along with it if that is what the rest of you want. However if it seems that they strike a different location than the one that we set up then can we agree to strike at their heart rather then let them continue to pick off helpless people in their sleep?
"Agreed," says Naberius, weighing Raveen with a look.

"Plan B is always an option," the man said neutrally, glancing at the two. "Please remember that we are only seven people, outside company excluded. Our name isn't even known yet--our hand is short for now. We must do with what we have--and what we have is little."

"I myself am accustomed to fighting in the dark--for the most part--though not at the level of the Tieflings," the man sighed. "Because their powers dim existing light, a torch or sunrod will allow us to see them yet. It is because of this advantage that I wish to separate them further by descending from the belltower. Light may seep through the shutters to the outside, so I would prefer a localized series of strikes against confused opponents--let them see us as two enemies. Then, they will split further.

As we remain in contact, I will update you of how things go on my end."

@Raveen: Because the Bastards have hit everything from a gemcutter, moneylender & an weaponsmith, they seem to be so over the place you don't know what they would be after next, but with that roll, if you did know what they wanted, you would be able to set up an irresistible target.

Did Raveen's (rerolled) 24 Intelligence check yield results? That was quite a high roll, and they have been targeting high-yield light items like coin, gems, and weapons. A 24 Intelligence, 21 Urban Survival and 28 Local checks may land me something useful.

Spell purchases:
-150 for Communal Darkvision.
-330 gp for a Continual Flame spell on a reflective steel surface. Raveen will pop that into his hand-mirror, and wrap it up in cloth.

Total expenditure = 740 gp.
If that doesn't burn our WBL, I'm not sure what will. I'm billing Janiven for this.

The roll was good to create a store that would attract them IF you knew what they wanted next. Are they robbing places to get materials for a 'mission'? Are they being told to rob places from a higher (or lower ;) ) power? Are the robbing based on revenge? These are things unless you somehow infiltrated the Bastard's lair (physically or magically) or through interrogation, you could not know what their next target would be. If they were consistent in the businesses they hit, I would give it to you, but there seems to be too many variables known only to the Bastards.

Unknown (Probable Male) Unknown Race ???

Taking into consideration the DM's post, this is what our Masked Conspirator said instead. Here is a quick and dirty approach.

"There are several ways we could get this done. We have more options now to consider.
A: Ambush and Infiltration:
We lure their thieves to a trap, then make a covert assault on their remaining forces in the base, while nullifying their defenses and abilities.
B: Knock in, Knock Out: We assault them directly in the day, taking advantage of surprise, sleep, and favorable light conditions, after making sure they have no way to escape (underground or above-ground).
C: False Retreat Gambit: We hit the chapel once in a loud surprise assault, and then retreat when they rally, only to lure them to an ambush in an alleyway we retreat to, and finish them off.
D: Enemy of My Enemy: We frame the Tieflings for the attack on Arael's cart, and leak information about them to Shanwen or the Dottari--and we descend on both parties when they are fighting.
Thoughts? Preferences? Suggestions?" he asked, looking up to the rest.

"I could push a cleric of Erastil to evaluate the place for a rebuilding effort--that way, Anna (who is more reverent than I) may enter with him (as well as with a host of other worshipers) to survey the place from the inside--but I imagine Erastilian temples are very simple--a large prayer hall, and several small enclaves and private rooms for prayer and sleep. They will no doubt move out of the way rather than risk discovery, and if they happened to blaspheme upon holy ground--well...we might even call that Plan F." he added with a chuckle.

Not-Very-Serious New Addition: Plan F: Join a group of Erastilian worshipers to survey and renovate the temple--if the Tieflings' actions of heresy are obvious, they might jump out of stealth and attack.

"At any case, I will survey the place in the morning--chances are we are not the only who are taking advantage of the Westcrown sewer system, and I'd like to shut off any avenues of escape, should they attempt to scatter."
