The spell description explicitly says that the pit starts filling up when the duration ends, and that it takes a single round (not a turn!) for it to be level with the surrounding area. Whether or not the howler can attack is the GM's call, I think. Would it be able to reach anyone from, say, ten feet down?
As for Tuesday: I don't think there is any mechanical reason that he couldn't be unconscious, even if it makes little sense fluff-wise. His type is outsider and not undead, so he would techically be considered a 'living' creature for the purposes of dying. I guess it could be described as him being in some sort of a half-way state between the planes, rather than as him falling down and bleeding. That would be weird.

It actually doesn't say whether a Phantom gets sent to the Ethereal Plane if it gets knocked unconscious, but I looked at the Summoner and it specifically said the Eidolon only gets dismissed when slain. So going off of that I would say the Phantom has be to slain as well, not just knocked out.
Naberius Belthrune |
Here is the relevant description:
"A fully manifested phantom is treated as a summoned creature from the Ethereal Plane, except it is not sent back to the Ethereal Plane until it is reduced to a negative amount of hit points equal to or greater than its Constitution score."
Then there are ability descriptions like these...
"She doesn’t gain these bonuses when the ectoplasmic manifested phantom is grappled, helpless, or unconscious."
"This bonus is a supernatural ability and does not apply if the phantom is unconscious."
...which indicate that the phantom is at least capable of being unconscious. I think the only reason there is any confusion on the matter is that we think of phantoms as 'not living' due to the fluff, which is not accurately represented by the mechanics. The designers probably thought this was obvious, so they didn't bother including a clarifying segment in the class write-up.

Just need a thorn removed.

Sorry, I've been stuck deliberating what spell to use, but I don't want to bring out the big guns just yet. I think I'll just pass my turn for now.

Thanks for the update

Will take a look tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

Hi All,
There seems to be a lack of posting from a formerly vocal group. As a DM, I want to be sure I am delivering a game you all enjoy. Therefore I wanted to see which option describes where you are right now:
1. Enjoy the game, but RL is real busy right now.
2. Enjoy the game, but it is difficult to get back into the game after a DM 2 week absence.
3. Enjoy the game, but not feeling this particular 'dungeon crawl'.
4. Not enjoying the game at all anymore.
5. Other reason.
Please feel free to speak freely or PM me if you feel more comfortable with that option. I would rather address concerns now instead of having the game fade away.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Still here and ready to kick but if Tal could ever hit.
Naberius Belthrune |
Hey, thanks for bringing this up.
I have been pretty busy IRL (lots deadlines and exams), but mostly I have been having a hard time coming up with anything to do in the current encounter. None of my damaging spells would work on a devil, and I don't want to waste my stronger spells on what is essentially an unnecessary encounter. Really, we're just waiting for Tal to wear it out. Maybe we could speed things along?
We aren't really deep enough into the dungeon for me to say if I like it or not. I'm excited to get into the lore of the demi-plane, for more opportunities to bicker with the group, and hopefully to get to chat with an imprisoned pit fiend—less with the constant fighting and trap-checking associated with dungeons.
I'm definitely still invested in the campaign, and all our characters. We've kind of settled into a slower pace than I would prefer, but that's fine as long as we stick to it.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I'm just trying to motivate myself, it's getting harder after all my f#~+ups and everything else.
*sends positive vibes*

OK. I have been trying to find out the rules about Spellcraft and Intelligent items and I am not finding anything, so any help will be appreciated.
1. What is the opposed check to Mera's spellcraft? The item is CL13 and gives off a moderate transmutation.
2. If Mera succeds in her check, what does that tell her?
3. Does Mera making her spellcraft check allow the item to communicate with her?
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Core rules indicate that a successful spellcraft only gives the most basic of information. Such as a +1 cold iron holy ghost touched longsword would really only be revelaed as a +1 longsword but with a moderate to high transmutation.
The base DC for any magic item is 15+CL so in this instance it would be 28.
However this approach does not really happen in 99% of the games I have seen or been a part of. As a house rule you could go with the base DC gives you the basics while a success of +5 gives you all; the information. This would make scrolls of identification much more useful as well.
As for speech that depends on if it is telepathy or speech. Speech it would not have a problem talking to anyone. Telepathy is typically only the owner or controller of the item. However you again could rule that a successful spellcraft/use magic device (activate blindly Dc 25)/diplomacy would allow the item to communicate as well.

Man I'm glad we have some smart people in our game that know the rules ;)
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Lots of down time actually when the kids are in bed and I sit reading the rule book. Thanks though. ;p
Naberius Belthrune |
Okay, so... the DC is only 5, which is good. The glaive is totally homicidal, though, which is less ideal.
Think you can handle it, Tal? Your Will save should do it, but that's still one in twenty chance of going berserk...
Tal Bernard Mainz |
I know I just saw that myself. I would gladly give it a try and keep it as a back up weapon or when we need more damage or a magic weapon. But if and when I roll that nat 1 I might kill all of you. I wasn't planning on taking improved iron will at 5th level but I might have to consider it.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
So I have been playing around with my character advancement and I am weighing some options that I want your input in. At 5th level I will be getting 2 feats and reach fighter level 4. That allows me to take shield specialization and improved iron will. However if we find a magical longsword I will hardly ever use the glaive. Is it worth it to take improved iron will then?
If I don't take improved iron will I am looking at either missile shield or saving shield. Missile shield automatically blocks 1 incoming ranged attack while saving shield would grant a +2 shield bonus to 1 of you that is adjacent to me.
Naberius Belthrune |
Well, I don't know if the glaive is going to be a permanent addition, seeing as you're going to specialise in using shields. A two-handed weapon doesn't really complement that. Naberius should be able to tide you over with protection from evil until you find a slightly less opinionated weapon. In my experience, Improved Iron Will is kind of limited in its usefulness, anyway.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Nabe just wanted you to know that I was not dismissing your offer of protection from evil. I was waiting for Mera to post anything more on the idea of Tal taking it. I was not going to force the issue in case that provoked the glaive forcing her to roll another will save.
If Mera is ok with handing over the glaive still I will gladly take the protection from evil spells instead of taking improved iron will.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Monday, please make that fort save or this could get ugly quickly.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Ever since the problems last week it seems the random number generator has been really really low.
Different campaign had 4 guys all roll attack and none of them were above a 10 on the d20.
Mera Wist-Thrune |
So I see you've been waiting on me for a bit, apologies. I used to make it to the forums five times a day. My life is completely different now and unfortunately I only make it on every few days now. If you get to the point where you are waiting on me and I'm not responsive, feel free to poke me at corycubbage@gmail.com and I'll get over here as soon as I can.
Rysky |
Figured I'd go ahead and bring this up (meant to do it earlier but then we got into the fight with the ghouls), but I've been thinking about quitting. Right now I'm having to force myself to post anything, even if it's simple combat stuff, that's about all I've posted lately. I'm not enjoying it anymore, and I'm probably bringing it down for the rest of you.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Is it a pace issue or something I can do better to help?
Tal Bernard Mainz |
Your not messing things up. You are adding spice to the story. It's the nature of the campaign right now. Once we are past this dungeon crawl then we can get back to other stuff.
