DMRaven's The Long Vigil (Inactive)

Game Master DMRaven

The warriors of Vigil have been a beacon for good since the Shining Crusade. Standing against the orc hordes of Belkzen, undead swarms from Gallowspire and the demonic armies of the Worldwound, they are never short of threats to face and always in need of bodies for the fray. The elite Knights of Ozem look for only the most promising of Lastwall's recruits to take into their halls. Do you have what it takes?

Kassara's strike whistles through air as Elyssa is no longer where she was standing. The other girl grabs Kassie's leg and moves in closer, trying to deliver an elbow strike. Unarmed Strike: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 for 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 nonlethal damage.

She quickly slips a hand into his, continuing to watch the fights, and gives it a quick squeeze. "This hand-to-h-hand fighting isn't w-what I've p-practiced at Castle Firrene. I used a c-crossbow against the Belkzen orcs. I'll b-be d-dropping in rank before too long if he k-keeps this up." Her face flushes, and she hopes no-one's watching, especially not Fisk.

Daen starts to feel dizzy again. His body wants to quit, but he drives on. Time seemed to slow a bit as Daen whirled about with a series of kicks. What was with those angel wings anyway? The thought distracted his execution and his second attack went wide. Fatigue was definitely setting in as his mind flagged.

It would be Sleight of Hand.

Battle Four
Daen Aheritor vs. Jalen Sturgis

Daen pushes forward, attacking multiple times. Jalen blocks one attack, only to get a kick in the stomach in response. He flies back a few feet and gasps, dropping his guard for a second.

His eyes narrow and a small smile flashes over his face, he's obviously pleased to see someone other than Rans make a try at him. He moves closer to the magus, circling him for a second before letting out a surprising shout.

Having been shouted at by Fisk for a couple of weeks had dulled him to the sudden noise of the guy in front of him, his face remaining impassive as he blocks his assault as well. As Jalen was so obviously pleased, Daen wondered if he wasn't being toyed with a little. He made a feint and took a shot at his opponents knee, but found only sand.

Daen's kick misses as Jalen rolls over it, dodging around him. Acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 However, Daen spins, moving out of the way and attacking Jalen as he tries to dart around. Opportunity attack provoked.

Jalen then lashes out with a backhanded strike before leaping extraordinarily backward and placing nearly ten feet of distance between himself and Daen. Unarmed Maneuver: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 damage and moves 10' backward without provoking.

As Jalen spun off, Daen tried to strike him with a wild punch, catching but air. That the wild punch threw him off balance in his damaged state actually worked in his favor since Jalen's backhand would have hit if he were practicing proper technique. Daen didn't want him to charge again, so as he jumped back, the half elf took initiative and ran at him through the sand. At the last second, he twisted to the side but brought around his leg in a fearsome roundhouse kick. He landed up with his back to the number one and staggered to regain his footing.

Woo! Rolled good! AC is down to 17 for the next round.

Battle Five

The crowd of scrubs, already fairly quiet, stills further. Daen's roundhouse kick knocks Jalen back a step, blood dripping into the sand from his face. He blinks, shakes his head for a moment. Even between Rans and himself, the battle never got this close.

He looks more guarded now, less willing to make a gambit for an upper hand. When he closes with Daen, he exchanges a few jabs, looking for an opening and playing more cautiously. However, between magic and his own skills, Daen gives no openings and leaves no route for Jalen to break his guard.

Despite his fatigue and his slight dizziness from the blow Jalen landed on him earlier, a sly thought crept into his waking mind. He faked a low blow, causing the other boy to swing his waist out and his head a bit forward. Then he brought his head down like a whip, aiming for his nose with a vicious headbutt.

"And..Cohort one has a new Number One. Congratulations, Aheritor." Ardis lets out a whoop and claps his hands. Rans looks disgruntled and irate. Once Fisk spends a healing spot to Jalen, the boy shakes his head.

Kassara Tilernos versus Elyssa Arunt

The noble's blow strikes, but only seems to slide off of the hard scales sprouting along the alchemist's arms and upper body. Elyssa winces at the hit at first, then smiles, her snake-like eyes narrowing.

Don't show weakness, don't show weakness. Daen spurred himself on as he gave a warrior's salute, still breathing hard from the exertion. "You're tough. Now that you know some of my tricks, it will be harder to defeat you in the future." He spat out a chunk of tooth that got somehow dislodged in his last few fights and smiled. "Of course, I've learned a thing or two about you as well."

But although I'm fighting here, my true goal is bigger than this. I wonder if anyone else thinks like that. The magus staggered over to the side where the other recruits were at and sat down, refocusing his energy and trying to recall everything that Jalen did, and how he might counter or copy it.

I heard that sometimes, although not always, the Bonewatch will let a student who doesn't make the top ten cut stay around if they are really good at a certain specialty. I've always tinkered with alchemy and figured it might be worth a shot just in case."

Fisk keeps the scrubs circled around for a moment, pacing the interior. "I saw a lot of fighting today and some of you are progressing. That is good, but we'll need to see much more if you hope to be good Knights. Spend your free time wisely. Everything is a test. Dismissed."

The Trainer stalks off, kicking a rat that scurries in front of his path into a wall and shaking his head.

Downtime actions for Day 12 and Day 13 (2 actions) can be made now. Hold off for Day 14 as something will happen on day 13.

After the challenges, Eckart recalls that Moyer had given him an assignment last time they met, one he hasn't had the time to work on at all. Daen shuffled off to Comell's office after the cohort disbands. He's physically tired, but his mind was spinning in all directions. His original plan was just to make it through, keep his head down, but now he was the new number one. To save face, he had to keep it, or at least make the fight look good. He couldn't back down now, and he'd have to redouble his efforts to make it happen.

As he arrived at Comell's office, he set to work doing the secretarial work to which he was naturally suited. He noticed the extra notes that Comell had left for him all week that suited his own studies in scroll work and smiled. Perhaps that's the way he could work it. As long as he had the magic aspect, he really could make some different situations for the challengers. It would take a bit of capitol, but he should be able to make some purchases and as long as magic was allowed, he could stay strong.

Day 13

The next day, he woke up to do some exercises according to the class he missed on Thursday because of the punitive measures that Fisk put on them. Hopefully he wouldn't be too far behind, having missed the first three classes. Doing the exercises would most certainly help.

After that, he went back to Comell's to finish his work from the week. If he had enough coins, he would definitely need to pick up a new scroll he could inscribe in his book. After his work was finished, he went by Comell's desk to ask him for aid. "My work is done for the week, can I get my pay and back pay? There's a scroll I want to go out and purchase so I can add it to my spell book. I think Color Spray would be quite useful in my weekly bouts. also, do you know where I can get one? I just took the number one position and I'm looking to keep that spot if I can."

Day 12 downtime, work for Comell. Day 13 downtime, practice for class, finish work for Comell.

Day Twelve

As Fisk leaves, Eilidh slips her hand free of Ardis and waves goodbye. "I need t-to go to the C-Cathedral and w-watch the children. Bye Ardis. Bye Elyssa." She heads to the Cathedral, hoping to have a better time at it than her first day.

Day Twelve Downtime: Work

Day Thirteen

Eilidh wakes up early enough to be outside for the rising sun. She walks quickly, hoping to reach the Chapel of Luminescent Dawnflower early. First, though, she stops by the Scriptorium to buy some ink, a sheaf of paper, and a couple of pens. Once she has what she needs, she hurries to try to try to find Estella the deaf halfling.

Day 12
Characters: Daen

When Daen first arrives, Comell is on a ladder looking through books in his library. He gives a faint wave to his secretary and smiles. "Rumor has it you got on Fisk's bad side last weekend. There's plenty of work stacked up for you to finish."

On the professor's desk, alongside a large pile of paperwork and books marked with Daen's name is a secondary pile with several scrolls to be sorted. Centered on the desk is what looks like a treatise in progress, something Comell is writing himself. The front page reads: "Properties of the Bloodstones of Arazni"

Day 12
Characters: Eilidh

Eilidh find herelf quickly put to work, Astrata tutting over how much time the Tilernos girl had to spend cleaning the arena due to Fisk's punishments.

Day 13
Characters: Daen

Obtaining his stipend from Comell was as simple as asking. The large man tosses Daen a red leather sack containing twenty gold coins. "First spot, eh? Well you have to keep that! It's worth quite a few bragging rights, even once you become a Knight. The Bonewatch has its own store for supplies in the basement, right under the training floor."

Characters: Allie

Eilidh arrives at the chapel in the middle of a sermon. A balding man in his late thirties stands before the blue-clothed altar. It seems one of the attending worshipers, of which there are only three, is having a problem with a neighbor. The priest brings up the importance of redemption and mercy when dealing with others, ending his sermon with a song.

What can wash away the sin?
Nothing but Dawnflower's glory;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but Dawnflower's glory.

Precious is the glow
Protects us from the woe;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the Dawnflower's glory.

For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the Dawnflower's glory;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the Dawnflower's glory.

This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the Dawnflower's glory.
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the Dawnflower's glory.

Glory! Glory! This I sing--
Thalachos show us Light and Truth,
All my praise for this I bring,
Nothing but the Dawnflower's Glory.

Day 12:
Daen had never heard of bloodstones before, and took a quick look at the notes without disturbing anything he couldn't replace quickly to see if he could get the basic idea of what it was about. If Fisk's words were true, that everything was a test, he needed to try to find out all he could about everything.

Knowledge Arcana: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

...Although it seemed that this treatise was definitely beyond his ability at this time. Perhaps if the magus could get the work done early, he'd ask the professor about it. Or maybe he should try to research what they were on his own before coming to the professor. After all, he didn't want Comell to be disappointed in his pupil's ingenuity or intelligence.

Day 13

Daen let himself expand a little bit under the professor's praise. "The basement? I'll have to see if I can find my way in. Thank you for your time."

He did not find it right away, but eventually he came across the entrance to the basement and made his way down. This place seemed big, but with hidden things like gigantic storage facilities, it seemed bigger now that he'd been there for a couple weeks. Perhaps he'd even find someone down here he knew.

Daen: Day 12:

Daen can't recall ever having heard of these items before. The notes seem to be about an object, a jar containing a lung that has great magical powers. Comell has been testing it with various methods to find out what it does exactly--specifically what effect, if any, it has to undead.

Day 13
Characters: Daen

The basement, if it is truly the lowest level of the Bonewatch, is not dank or dark like many castles. The stones here are as tight as those above and no groundwater seeps through. The same pale, magical light-orbs line hallways making hiding in shadows difficult. Much of the floorspace is open with wide rooms and ramps leading to and from the surface. It seems that much of the Bonewatch's storage of all kinds is handled here. The area is filled with workmen hauling various items to and from long shelves leading into the distance. Several huge vault doors seem to indicate other important items here. Daen notices a pair of rats perched on a crate of fruit as a worker drags it toward a ramp. There are no less than eight full Knights on guard along with double that in un-titled archers and squires.

Another scrub from cohort two, not one of Leo's cronies, points Daen toward a long wooden desk when asked who to talk to about scrolls. Above the desk and extending from it is a wire cage protecting the man within.

An elderly man with a thick grey mustache and a tonsure, he is scribling furiously on a clip board and handing scraps of paper, stacks of coins, sacks, boxes, parcels, crates, packets, trunks, pouches, cases and other sundries to a line of Knights, workmen, squires, archers, pages and scrubs. Daen has to wait for around a half hour before he makes it up to the front.

The man looks up expectantly, then arches an eyebrow when Daen doesn't hand him anything. The magus suddenly recalls that almost all of the others had either slips of parchment or packages that they had handed over.

Daen:

If Daen had religion, he could make a religion check on Arazni. Alternatively, someone else could attempt that second-hand if its mentioned to them. He can also try to learn more by using the Bonewatch's library.

Eilidh stands in the back, quietly mouthing along to the song. when the few worshipers leave, Eilidh moves to talk with the priest. "It's g-good to hear someone s-speaking to the Dawnflower. I haven't heard...haven't heard anyone give prayers s-since Father Richelieu b-back home. Is Este...is Estella Brandybuck here t-today? I m-met her last w-week, but I think it w-was difficult for her t-to understand me. I b-brought paper and ink, so I can w-write instead. Or, perhaps Priestess Maria?"
