All I need is a half-decent check (about 8 or more) then I can use Derring-do to add 1d6 (exploding) to the check - I can decide "after the roll but before the result" so I'm trying not to look to see what I'd need (remember you're at -4 Dex because you're grappled too) so, just to make it clear that i'm not cheating,... If I roll an 8 or more on an escape artist check I will be using Derring-Do! (unless its more than 16 because that'd be wasteful!)

This is a great game Raven, I've been loving it. Thanks a lot.
While I'm handing out thanks, Thanks to Kassara for whipping Rans. If he doesn't get much healing, I've got a real good shot of keeping that number one spot!

Thank you! I had no idea..I should go thank the Dm's in the two games I'm playing in.
So far I'm really enjoying running this. I wasn't sure if it'd work out very well since the whole weekly fighting pvp part takes some time, but we seem to crank through them quickly enough. I always loved all the sub-systems scattered around PF and thought it'd be fun to run a game that uses all of them.
Daen Aheritor |
Yeah, sorry that you weren't a part of this. I'm trying to wrap it up so you can jump back in. I think you've got a particularly interesting story arc, and I'm looking forward to it being played out eventually. Thanks for checking in!

Eckart tries to get some time away from everyone to do a quick search of the cohort's belongings. Specifically the nobles and other important sound people.
[dice=Perception]1d20+6Day 12
Eckart will go back to the armour and see if he can do some work there.Day 13
Eckart will train for the next group of fighting, trying to get a +2 to attack.
Days 13 and 14 aren't training days, so you get two downtime actions for each of those days.
Daen Aheritor |
Is that happening in the afternoon? And is it something beyond downtime or if we do a downtime, will we still be able to participate? Daen is planning on doing some more practice, but it's always fun to be involved when I can be.
Grimold |
Hey everybody! I'll be playing Grimold/Rolando, the Varisian reformee. I've been reading through the game so far; you all seem to have meshed really well, and I hope I can keep from screwing up the dynamic. Grimold's coming in with some serious baggage, but all the best Sixth Rangers do.
Grimold |
Thanks! I just finished catching up on the Game and Discussion threads. It's weird; I feel like I already know all of you now. I was super excited when the plot stuff started happening :D Even though I had already finished the Game thread by that point, I was still sad when I got to the (thankfully short-term) cancellation in the Discussion.
I saw the requests about classes on the third page in discussion. I was thinking Warlord/Magus multiclass, but I'm definitely more interested in buffs and battlefield control then blasting with magic. I was initially avoiding choosing bard, both because I wanted to at least start out without magic and because I like seeing characters who play instruments/worship gods even if it's not required by their class. I was hoping to build into unarmed fighting/quarterstaff/thrown weapons/magic, but Bard isn't really that much worse off for what I'm imagining than Magus. And the Warlord has some class abilities that lend themselves to party buffs as well.
I anticipate that Grimold will have an interesting road to travel with Allie, and he's going to have a serious hate-on for Jalen. It should be interesting to see just how quickly Grimold can get past his very, very poor first impression of Cohort One and assimilate into the group.
Speaking of Jalen, I've got a pretty good idea of what class he is.
Anybody given much thought to those strangely hardy rats? I'm thinking it's something in the water...
Daen Aheritor |
Hey and welcome! I'm glad you're excited about the plot and storyline. I think there are some really cool things going on here, and one person can't even deal with them all.
When I read through your background, I actually expected for you to be a Skald. Straight bard would be better for our group, I think. We're all dex based! I also don't mind multiclassing, although I'm not going to do it personally. I'm glad you didn't go Magus, because I like diversity in the group as well.
I can't say how Daen and Grimold will get along. We'll just have to see.
Jalen? Yeah, he is something. :)
And I think the rats are a great thing to expore, Daen just wasn't interested in chasing them. It's not his style.
In any case, I'm glad you're here. Welcome to Hogwarts, er Battle School, um, The Bonewatch!
Eilidh "Allie" Tilernos |
I have no real preferences for which class you choose. If you'd chosen the other trait, I'd have demanded cavalier, but that doesn't work as well for this one. I think you should play what you want, and not worry about party synergy.
As for the rats, I've considered them, but there hasn't been much time to deal with them, what with our downtimes being used for punishment. Maybe next week, or the one after that...

It is happening in afternoon and does not count against downtime actions
Grimold |
Thanks Kassie! Maybe once he gets over himself you'll have a partner for mischief.
Dang, you were not kidding about the unpleasantness.
Grimold |
I'm untrained! I didn't know! WHO LETS CHILDREN MAKE UNTRAINED BLUFF CHECKS?!!
Daen, what are your thoughts on the official published Aldori options versus the Crane Wing build?
Oterisk |
As a Magus, the prestige class holds little excitement due to lack of spell progression. Before slashing grace, it was one of the few ways to get Dex to Damage and was a part of my Dueling Sword Magus' original build. But now there are feats that can make the sword style quite useful, and so it's not necessary to use the prestige class.
The current Crane Wing is okay, it's Crane Riposte that allows something like a -1 to hit for a +6 versus one character. Sure it's like a five feat thing, but the benefits aren't terrible for what you get. Combat expertise is only tolerable to really use if you take the Aldori Swordlord Prestige Class. I don't really like it as a feat tax. In a pinch it sometimes works, but defense is not usually the way to go. The Fighter class and Prestige class can do okay, but it also only works when you full attack. Crane wing can be done during a move and attack, and actually fits my idea of a dueling style better.
The cool thing is that they actually stack, so you could conceivably make a build that did both, probably with a two level dip in Master of Many Styles or else you'll be waiting until way late to get the thing going. You could make a really high AC build with this, but I'd probably go one way or another.
Grimold |
I played a Crane Wing build Swordlord in a one-off game. It was a lot of fun getting surround by orcs and disarming them all. Then my sword got sundered :/
Allie. ALLIE. We need to find a Shelynite scrub.
DMRaven |
I don't feel the original wording of Crane Wing was too crazy and am fine not using the errata to it.
On the Tilernos family:
Neither Allie nor Kassie nor at any point in the game so far (really) has he been mentioned. I hinted at an idea earlier when Eilidh was speaking to the visiting priest at the Chapel, but felt I would reveal a little of the hand.
They do not know who their father is. They aren't even sure, completely, if their mother was married to the man--although no one treats them like bastards so its likely she was. She never speaks of him, not even when asked, always changing the subject. They only have vague memories of a long-haired man with a kind smile and a booming laugh.

Naming Conventions
Random tidbit about how NPC names are made up/chosen
I see Taldor as a very Roman/Byzantine-era empire in decline. So its architecture, military, and names of people all stem from those sources. Taldan is more traditional Italian-Roman while Lastwall is more Byzantine.
Nearby Brevoy is split between two conventions. The north, former Issia, is Russian in dress and name while the south, Restov and former Rostland are Italian in name and a mix of Russian/Italian in dress. Restov is the only area with a distinctly Italian flavor of culture and architecture, the rest of the area acquiring the Russian architecture of the north.
Mendev to the north is Frankish with strong elements from the Crusader States (Edessa/Antioch/Ascalon) due to the mixing of multiple types of people there.
Ustalav names are are Slavic, mostly pre-Magyar Hungary and Russian.
Nirmathas to the south makes use of 13th Century English for attitude, culture, dress and naming conventions.
Varisia draws on the baltic region (Croatia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania) with the Shaonti drawing on Romani for names and Cuman, Scythian and Pecheneg influences for culture, dress and fighting style.
Grimold |
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought of Nirmathas as Robin Hood's England.
So was that Master's in History, or is it just a hobby?
EDIT: Since we're talking about studying, I'm doing my Bachelor's in chemical engineering currently. Kassie, I'm guessing grad school in biology?
Eilidh "Allie" Tilernos |
Interesting. I always pictured Cheliax as Italian renaissance in terms of architecture, but Roman in terms of culture.
My bachelor's degree is in history, but I haven't looked at most of the Golarion kingdoms. I'm running Brevoy as Prussia and the River Kingdoms as the German States, Iobaria as Russia, and Taldor as something like Spain (complete with Moor problems, in the form of Qadira). Ustalav is obviously eastern European, but I haven't looked further west.

Hobby. Criminology masters, working on one in Geospatial analytics.
I always saw Cheliax as Spanish due to their expansionist policies and colony-esque stuff. Plus the overbearing religion of Asmodeus on their politics similar, kind of, to Catholic influences (of course without the whole Lawful Evil bit).
