RoW Combat map

The Pathfinder Society has recently undertaken an extensive series of journeys of exploration into the River Kingdoms, probing the depths of the ancient Azlatni ruins of Thornkeep and the Emerald Spire. Such journeys call for a remarkable number of resources and personnel, but as the River Kingdoms are surrounded by few places friendly to Pathfinders, the Society often turns to the Sellen river to act as a lifeline for resupply. The river offers a near direct route between the Kingdoms and the Inner Sea through (mostly) friendly territory.

It is then unsurprising that a few agents have been asked to put on a presence at Bellis in Anodran, one of the more important towns along the river. The occasion: the wedding of one of the more important citizens Elyin Ursage, a councilor and noted beekeeper in a town famous for its bees and mead, to Kailah Winmede. Exotic, strong or well-mannered agents can certainly do much to garner favor among the locals and secure the Sellen route.

As to the recent rumors from loggers of fey fleeing from the woods and a strange fog rising out of the deeper woods? All gainsay and nonsense, really. Who could believe such wild rumors?

"Bah, why does the Society always send me to the civilized places? I would be more at place investigating these rumors in the deeper woods" Eolowyn said after the team had received their assignment and the VC had left them.

She is an elven female (lady would be an overstatement), wearing practical gear, including a mithral chainshirt. On her side you can see a quiver and an elven curveblade. When she walks outside she whistles sharply and a huge Roc descends, landing next to her. The Roc is also wearing a mithral chain barding and is attired with some sort of saddle.

The elf climbs scratches the beak of the Roc and says "This is Arrano and I am Eolowyn."

Varian is armored in a very shiny, well-maintained chain shirt, and carries only a dagger and a crossbow visibly as weapons. His skin is bronzed by the sun, and his fair hair stands in sharp contrast to his burnished coloration. He is all smiles as he greets Eolowyn and Arrano.

No rush.

The hardened, world-wise Pathfinders arrive at the merry event in ones and twos, although Eolowyn's arrival is accompanied by much fanfare as children swarm around and point at her roc Arrano, albeit from a respectful distance. A few of the older children stare with wonder at bronze skinned Varian, comprehending only faintly the full extent of his otherworldly heritage. Mathias, with his distinctive Chelish features and the prominent symbol of his order, is given wide berths and occasional - if silent - looks of hatred by adults.

Festivities for the wedding stretch from the stone chapel and rose gardens of Shelyn, past a large open-air tent, and down to the sun-drenched, tree-lined banks of Stillwater Creek. Music and laughter fill the air, with partygoers calling out for arriving attendees to join their games and merrymaking. The crowd is a colorful mix, mostly human with a smattering of elves, dwarves and gnomes mixed among them.

About half of the folk seem well muscled but simply dressed in breeches, loose woolen tunics and trousers - these folk are generally drunk. It is a simple matter to deduce that these are the well known semi-itinerant foresters of Bellis, who mostly make their home in the "Pit" - a shanty town in a circular depression on the outskirts of town.

The rest seem mostly to be better dressed yeomen farmers and their families. Engaging in small talk with these folk invariably seems to lead to discussion of their apiaries, the size and fecundity of their bees, or the quality of their mead (which seems to be the drink of choice for these folk).

An older, white haired man dressed in an expensive looking silk tunic spots the approaching Pathfinders and hurries over, extending his hand in friendship.

"Greetings friends! You must be the Pathfinders that I heard about. Your fellow up in Almas - uh, Brackett, was it? - sent word that you would be coming. You may call me Brigrim Tell, the city mayor, and welcome to the wedding of Elyin Ursage and his lovely wife Kailah... he's the winner of last year's honey harvesting competition, you know!" The man practically beams the last bit of news from his smiling face. "I can't say I've ever had the pleasure of meeting a Pathfinder, but the idea that you folks might be chronicaling the simple joys of Bellis is just wonderful. In the meantime, I must insist you enjoy all of the finest that Bellis has to offer."

The mayor swings his hand expansively; underneath its sweep you see a small groups of folk clustered around various festivities.

  • Several small, fidgety children sit along a short wooden bridge. Fishing poles dangle from their hands, but judging by the empty buckets next to them, they haven’t caught anything yet.
  • Delicious smells emanate from a large canvas tent. Partygoers frequently come and go, carrying wooden plates of fried fish and barbecued pork with cups of honeymead. Around the back, smoke rises from several cookfires.
  • A well-worn path strewn with flower petals leads between plain wooden benches to a decorative gazebo at the bottom of this amphitheater. More flowers adorn the structure itself, and a line of well-wishers extends to a seated couple dressed in finery beneath its roof.
  • Within the shade of massive oak trees, musicians perform a variety of quickstep tunes. Several partygoers have already joined the dance, whirling beneath colored streamers and lanterns hung between the trees.
  • The clang of horseshoes against iron stobs announces an unmistakable game of skill hidden by the treeline. A handful of bystanders mill about, watching the throws of a massive half-orc wearing the face paint of his orc ancestors. A nearby board keeps score with wooden pegs, but the half-orc doesn’t appear to have an opponent yet.
  • Apart from the boisterous crowd sits a well-shaded stone structure surrounded by rosebushes. A pair of wooden doors carved with chasings of amorous satyrs and nymphs leads inside.
  • A wide path leads to a maze of thick, ten-foot-tall hedges with songbirds nesting within them. A few wedding guests stand at
the entrance, with one or two occasionally venturing into the maze to explore the flower gardens and statuary inside.

Eolowyn joins Varian in congratulating the happy couple

RoW Combat map

Eolowyn's recommendations quickly bear fruit... or fish, rather. Bugs are quickly found - children of course, being naturals at such things - and the fish are soon caught almost as fast the lines hit the water. Eolowyn is soon forgotten as the children run to bring their bounty to Mr. Benwold, and return bearing candy and toys to their peers.

As Eolowyn and Varian make their way to the ampitheathre they spy the wedding couple, Elyin and Kailah, who both appear rather busy. It would seem that boath are still in the midst of preparations for the ceremonies which will be shortly occurring. The bride is a young, blonde human woman, busily discussing some last minute details with a few of her bridesmaids. She briefly does a curtsy at the approaching aasimar and elf, lingering her eyes momentarily over the exotic and beautiful aasimar, and then returns to her preparations.

The groom, Elyin, is half-elven and older, with weathered skin and ropy muscles telling of a life lived out-of-doors. He seems to be talking to his groomsmen (or groomsfolk perhps, as one is a woman); all of them seem be ill attired for the festivities, dressed in leather and green cloaks with a few flowers awkwardly pinned on as an afterthought.

K(local) 12; +7 for Eolowyn (this includes favored enemy) and she may make the check untrained:
The greencloaks are wearing the emblem of the Foresthawks, a local group of rangers who keep the local goblin and kobold populations in check, and negotiate between fey and foresters.

Elyin turns to the Pathfinders and welcome them, shaking their hands firmly. "Greetings, friends! I am glad that such remarkable folk could honor this, the best day of my life." The half-elf seems drunk with happiness, although perhaps distracted by his the weight of his responsibilities.

"Many thanks! I'm terribly sorry, they mentioned who would be coming on behalf of the Pathfinders, but it's been a busy day and I fear I've forgotten. Was it... Vern?" Elyin struggles to be diplomatic but clearly is distracted by the day's events. Still, he soldiers on, clearly no stranger to the uncertainty of humanoid interaction. "Mayor Tell tells me your folk would like to set up a waystation in our town. Splendid idea! Is there anything I can do for you in the moment? If not, I insist you try some of my honeymead." "Varian, you have an excellent memory, as I myself have none for names, you were very close. Varian Amari, and my companion here is Eolowyn I'm assuming we are still together. A waystation in your lovely town would be a great boon to the society, but not something for you to be concerned of on a day like this... certainly such things can be discussed after you are properly wedded, bedded and honeymooned. As for your offer, I would love to try your brew. Thank you kindly, Elyin, you are too generous!"

Varian tries the honeymead, starting with a sip and with a quick look around, imbibing as the others do, (continuing with sips or tossing it back like a shot of whiskey - whatever seems to be the norm)...

No matter what he thinks of it, he remarks on it favorably...

RoW Combat map

The mead is indeed a sweet and heady thing, and quite strong. The aasimar takes a deep swig of the draught - but quickly realizes too much of the stuff will quickly go to his head, and that it is a thing best nursed if sharper wits are to prevail. The drink is a testament to Elyin's skill.

It seems the happy couple have already turned their attention elsewhere, leaving the Pathfinders to their revelry.

You can talk to the greencloaks or move on, as you will. The couple to be seem too busy to hobknob overmuch at the moment.

Weddings... how droll., Mathias thinks to himself, his mithral armor darkened to match his mask as they approach the town. However, he then hides it away for the time being, for appearances sake if nothing else. A Hellknight in Andoran must act carefully, and he knew well enough to put on a simple smile as necessary. He is quiet during the introductions, but acts courteously nonetheless.

"The waystation is of importance, so we should not hold back its discussion too much.", Mathias driving home the point still as he sips some of the honeymead. Too sweet, but the signifier puts on a good face once more.

One of the Foresthawks turns to Eolowyn, and it is quickly apparent that the woman lacks the lighthearted joy of most of the partygoers. She looks the elf up and down and nods. "You must be from Kyonin? Aye, we could use help from the elves; things have been downright strange here. There's been an unnatural mist in the woods, the foresters have been disappearing and the fey have scattered. I was hoping Devarre... that's the local druid, right?... would show up to the wedding and we could ask him about it. I thought he was on pretty good terms with Elyin but I haven't see 'em here."

Another of the rangers chimes in, sardonically. "And he'd be 'a hard one to miss; all those druid brews turned him green as a drunk."

"...anyways," the woman continues "Something strange is going on around here, and we've half a mind to go check it out after Elyin's done with getting himself all wed."[/b]

The two men nod in agreement.

---------------------------

As the nagaji walks into town he is instantly greeted by half a dozen shocked stares - the aasimar was unusual for these simple people, but a nagaji is clearly some completely alien to them. One drunk forester begins shouting. "What in the hell is that... thing, that snake-thing? Some sort of, of freak, freak yea! Get the guard, quick... someone get my axe!" Despite the bellicose nature of the wedding guest, most are clearly much more respectful of the naga-spawn, keeping a respectful distance.

The half-orc, fully arrayed in a kind of tribal warpaint, is an intimidating sight. Intimidating enough, in fact, that the other guest give the pit a wide berth leaving an uncomfortable gap in festivities.

Isolated, the orc-blooded makes the best of the situation by fiercely throwing metal shoes with more power then grace. His strength and ready supply of horseshoes help you deduce that the man is a smith, and of a kind more use to the forge then festivities.

He turns to the approaching Mathias after throwing his last shoe and unnecessarily shouts. "Hey ya' hellknight. Would you honor the guests by showing your skill? Will you give the Andorens a chance to defend their name against you kind by showing their skill? There's a prize waiting, too, if enough people come to play a tournament."

Oh geez. No clue how I missed that. I read or for some reason.

Mathias studies the nagaji's technique and tries it out himself.

Mathias puts a suitable amount of power on it, but his aim goes horribly off.

"Hrmph... I am not trained in such a game.", the Hellknight trying to hide his displeasure.

RoW Combat map

Varian's horseshoe lands short, throwing up a pointed cloud of dust; while Mathias throws a shoe almost directly at the half orc, who gives a grunt as he leaps out of the way.

After several rounds of play, it is Kylar's quick hands and serpentine strength which carries the day, his horseshoe's ringing cloud and clear above the din. His careful aim elicits a cheer from the small crowd that has gathered to watch the game.

The smith - whom a passing resident identifies as Halak Kent - gives an approving shout as Kylar wins the match.

"'ya, is a good sign! A mighty warrior indeed has carried the day. The wedding be blessed by such a thing, and many happy years lay ahead."

The half-orc turns to a satchel and secures the prize - a pile of 25 gold sails and a potion of cure light wounds, which he gifts to the Nagaji with some ceremony.

The crowd is starting to disperse to return to the feast tent and the dance area, when raised, high-pitched voices are briefly heard from the near the rose garden in the southeast corner of town. A rosy-cheeked, lovely gnome woman is briefly seen slapping away the hand of a pale skinned, white haired gnome male, who seems to be pestering the young lady. The woman flees into the rose maze, the man following her at a slower pace but with a look of determination in his eyes.

The gnome is one of those rare bleachlings, gnomes that have lost their passion for life and have returned to a state closer to their existence of the first world; they are a joyless lot if blessed with a certain cynical wisdom

Kylar smiles at the prize but his mood is quickly gone as he notices the gnome harassing others. Kylar quickly takes off after Varian.

Varian rounds the first hedge, followed closely by a sprinting Kylar. As the pair enter the maze, they find that the pale gnome has cornered the younger woman - he gestures wildly with his hand as he pleads with her. As the Pathfinders approach, they can see that in addition to an unhealthy pallor, half a dozen bees lazily crawl in the unkempt shock of white hair on top of the gnomes head. The gnome, however, doesn't seem to notice. His voice his high and aggressive as the words tumble out.

"...it's been years, Lumi, years. I've been patiently waiting for you to notice me, to give me the cursed time of day. Even when my best bees made the best honey ever for ye' cakes - no, not so even as much as one "Thank You". Well, I'm done waiting, I've met someone... better, and things are going to change. This is your last chance: you've got to come away with me"

Lumi tries to cut into the rambling. "Tenzekil, please, I've never felt that way about you, and you're just not making sense. Your not well, dear, you're white as a sheet. You've bleached and... it's awful! Just plain awful!"

At this the older gnome becomes nigh frenzied. "At a time like this my little condition is all you can think of! Fine, see if I care what happens to you, strumpet! Go back to Mertis and enjoy your happiness while you can, floozy!" The bees in the gnomes hair buzz in sympathetic anger.

"Why hello... is everything alright here? I heard raised voices... My goodness, sir, you look positively like you just saw a ghost... can I get you a doctor, by chance?" Varian saunters in, chatting lightly as if he just overheard and wandered into the clearing by accident.

RoW Combat map

The gnome whirls around and stares with bloodshoot eyes at the Aasimar.

"A doctor? Are you going to find a doctor to give me my youth back? I think not! What I need is all I ever needed: respect! acknowledgment! Not meddling from giants! "

The gnome seems to have briefly forgotten the woman and focuses on Varian. The woman - Lumi - uses the opportunity to slowly back away from the rambling man.

"Especially a foreign giant. Who are you and why do you have any interest in what a boring person like me is doing?"

As the gnomes voice continues to raise in volume fat bees fly in ones and twos out of his clothing - a few more stream out of the rose bushes. The bees whirl around Varian, and one even lands upon the Aasima and begins crawling up the planetouched's arm.

"Let me begin by saying I have great respect for gnomes, one of my best friends is a cleric of the Dawnflower and a beautiful and bubbly gnome. I respect her greatly. I may not be a local here, but I did come to attend the wedding by invitation, so foreigner or not, I was welcomed here by the lucky couple. As for my interest in you, I am sure you are not as boring as you allude to, but in this case, my interest is more in the young lady you are pressing your suit with." He looks down at the bee on his arm and lifts it to look at it more closely and blows on it gently. "Fly away, little one, I have no quarrel with you or your master." Back to the gnome, he says, "The young lady says she doesn't share your feelings, can you not just accept that - you demand respect, yet respect is earned, and it would go a long way toward earning respect to give respect to others, including this young gnomess here."

The gnome twists his face into a painful-looking contortion - halfway between a sneer and confusion. He seems distracted for a moment, looking at the horizon. "The reason I am here is to protect Lumi, cretin... to protect... Fine, have it your way. You win! You win!. I'll leave her to her fate, and I'll even give you a word of advice. Leave. These lands are no longer meant for the hands of men. Leave now, if you have any sense" The gnome's eyes are bright and he suddenly plunges into the rose hedges. Instead of lacerating his flesh, he seems to melt through the obstruction. The fat bees quickly folow Tenzekil.

Varian watches the bleached out gnome leave, lofting a curious brow when he seems him melt into the shrubbery. Then he turns to Kylar and shrugs. "Still not sure what all that was about, but at least he's stopped for now. I hope he's going to be okay. I hope the wedding goes off alright too, that gnome seemed to be spouting prophecies of doom and gloom for any humans in the area."

He turns to Lumi and, with a warm smile and an outstretched hands he asks "Are you alright? Would you like an escort back to the others?" as an afterthought, he adds, "Do you know what your fellow gnome meant by the lands no longer being meant for the hands of men?"

Mathias shortly walks up to Varian and Kylar, the Hellknight finally swallowing his pride enough to greet the... exotic Kylar. He notices his fellow Pathfinders in a state next to the other gnome. "What seems to be going on here?", he asks, eyebrow raised.

RoW Combat map

The gnome woman is breathing quickly, her cherubic cheeks having turned quite pale. "I'm... fine? Yes, I'm fine, I think. That was Tenzekil; he is... well was the prizewinning beekeeper in Bellis five years running. The bees were his feu - ummm, his focus and the source of his youth. His honey was fine; I mean, he was always a little too serious about it - and his obsession about me - but it was ok." Lumi pauses to catch her breath, then continues. "But then Elyin won and all the color drained right out of him" she gestures downward with her hands to emphasize the last bit. She voice then goes soft, as if she were talking of the dead. "He bleached and lived."

"I've no idea who this Queen is he's going on about. I hope it's not some sort of giant bee." Lumi wrinkles her face in disgust.

From the church building of Shelyn a summoning bell can be heard to ring - it would seem that the official ceremonies are to start within the half hour.

"I'm afraid I don't know as much about gnomes as I should, I guess. This 'bleaching' event, from what you seem to be saying is usually... fatal? And he survived it? Indeed one wonders then who or what this Queen might be, and if she had something to do with his survival. Will you come with us to the wedding then? It seems we are being summoned." Varian starts leading the way out of the maze, if he can indeed recall the way. Hopefully since we didn't go that far in, he can find his way out... lol

RoW Combat map

Lumi nods her head, happy to take Varian's lead. The group makes its way to the central grounds and the benches which sit besides a rose-entwined gazebo.

A sudden swell of music announces the bride and groom’s approach. Kailah and Elyin emerge from the chapel of Shelyn with the priestess Viviana by their side. Bridesmaids and musicians follow behind. Guests immediately gather in the amphitheater at the center of the grove. Once the procession reaches the gazebo, Viviana announces a song about unexpected love from Shelyn’s Melodies of Inner Beauty. She nods briefly to the musicians for accompaniment and starts to sing.

"Fill your heart, eyes, and mind with the beauty of the world. Without beauty and love, we are nothing..." Her voice is quite pleasant, and teary eyed folk wait expectantly as the ceremonies proceed. Even the inebriated foresters - who are mostly at the very periphery of the crowd - seem to keep themselves in check.
