Mordrak smoothly follows the lead of Lady Morilla, deftly taking the proper fork at the correct time just a split second after she has done so.
At the exchange between the Paracountess and Ofarah, Mordrak leans over and says quietly to the Taldan, I fear our hostess does not appreciatize the extravagance of a Chelish gala, with all its tawdry indulgence and sinister undertones. Yet at the same time, the formality of this affair is more rigid than a typical celebration in Taldor, wouldn't you agree?

Quiven looks at all the flatware and after watching briefly decides that he'll just wing it. As long as a fork is a fork it shouldn't matter what I eat with it, right? I'm right, aren't I?
The halfling then tries once again to endear himself to the Lady. It's sure nice to be able to sit down and have a nice fancy meal for once. Trail rations surely get old, though fresh fruit usually helps. So, have you ever been to one of those Chelish things?

I am not used to such refinement at the table milady. The priest says abashed by a cake fork. Yet your gathering seems pleasant enough. I could not compare it to one of the paracountess since I have never attended those, and dont plan to.
DM Rah |
Ofarah nods slightly, "Fair enough. A brief answer, but honest I think."
As the second course—reefclaw cakes presented with fire roasted corn, garlic, and sauteed leeks—is placed before you, Ofarah poses her second question, this time directing it at Yala.
“Yala, you are known as Witchbane among your people. However did you come by this title?”
The Ulfen warrior stands proudly, pounding on the table and sending a smattering of reefclaw onto her neighbor’s plate. “I am the bringer of death to the witches of Irrisen, and my bloody blade is the last thing their icy eyes see before I send them straight to Hell! If I lived a thousand years, I couldn't kill enough witches, and if I could wipe their filthy spawn from the face of Golarion tomorrow, I’d give my last breath to do so!”
When Yala ceases her tirade, her face red and her eyes wild, Ofarah turns to and asks Omrax, "What do you think of witches?"

"My most gracious host, I would be dishonest if I said I had met many witches in my travels and formed a strong opinion on the subject of witches in general. I can say unequivocally that if said witches practice dark arts and consort with demons, my reaction would be much as stated by Lady Yala. However, justice demands a fair trial and I have met a witch or two that align closely to my own tenets and the goals of our Society. With these I have no objection."

Small talk continues as the second course is enjoyed. Ofarah continues the conversation with Yala and Omrax, discussing the differences between the witches of Irrisen and those that exist elsewhere in in the world.
During the third course of roasted beets in a dwarven mead reduction, presented with fresh goat cheese and pickled Chelish greens, Ofarah continues her efforts to get to know her guests by engaging Trade Prince Aaqir al’Hakam in conversation.
“Honorable trade prince, I understand you are a relative newcomer to Absalom. As an outsider myself, I am curious about your experiences here.”
The handsome Qadiran smiles humbly, and raises an eyebrow as he dabs his napkin to the corner of his mouth. “What an excellent question! In my years seeking financial partners while living in Katheer, I traveled here many times and find the opportunities more promising with each visit. Now that I am here permanently, I find myself ever seeking the company of those from distant shores, with whom I may make even more ambitious arrangements to ensure mutual financial gain. And I find keeping an eye on my daughters in such a big and corrupting city quite a daunting task!”

Deeply concentrating on banishing the pickled greens to the far side of his plate, Tal is startled to be addressed directly. Small talk...or does she want the whole story? Best keep it brief I think.
"These past few years have been interesting and exciting to say the least. In fact I rarely get an opportunity to spend much time in the city at all these days...our business requires quite a bit of travel as you can imagine."
DM Rah |
Orafah seems pleased at Talhaearn's brief, but honest reply.
You continue the conversation through the rest of the course. Soon, though, your dishes are cleared and they begin the main course.
Composed of grilled fillet of ankheg, presented with caramelized shallots in a Thuvian wine reduction, crisp truffle-scented potato, white asparagus, and Darklands mushrooms, as this course is served the hostess continues her line of questioning, now turning her attention to Gaspar Desime.
“Gaspar, I have to ask, whatever are all those medals for? I assume you earned them on the battlefield, no?”
The already-tipsy Isgeri chugs his wine uncouthly and slams the empty goblet down onto the table dramatically. His gaze ever on the Paracountess instead of Ofarah, he begins an interminable recounting of the epic tale of his career: “Why yes indeed! Over four hundred hobgoblin foot soldiers died by my blade alone, and my name is still uttered along with the most honored heroes of the Goblinblood Wars. Why, were it not for me, one can only imagine what would have become of fair Isger at the hands of the wretched hordes. To think of all that missed opportunity...”

Wow, that's quite a question to be asking a humble halfling. Quiven ponders the inquiry a moment, as if trying to figure it out for the first time himself. I've helped lots of people in my time with the Society, I grant you that. But probably my greatest achievement has been making all these new friends during my travels, like these people here. The halfling looks at each of the party members in turn, smiling or winking as he does. Just knowing that I have made alliances with people like these is an accomplishment I never imagined I'd have made.
After a pause the rogue adds, Oh, and having some of my artwork put on display in the Grand Lodge of Absolam... yeah, that was pretty impressive also.
DM Rah |
"Very honorable achievements. Friendship is a valuable commodity in any place, and art can outlive us all, no matter what our lifespans might be."
Ofarah continues her conversation for a time with Quiven, and seems genuinely interested in his artistic skill, even laughing over a discussion about the hidden symbology of the banana.

The penultimate course, a dessert of sorbet served with berries soaked in Irrisen ice wine and topped with a delicate chocolate lattice, is accompanied by yet another question from Ofarah, this time directed at a the Sapphire Sage, Amenopheus.
“What can you tell me of the past, Amenopheus? What is the earliest notable event that occurred within your own lifetime?”
The aged Osirian raises his eyebrows at the insinuation of his advanced age, but smiles nonetheless and responds. “In all my years, I have never sat at as lovely a table as this one, I will tell you that. Beyond that, however, the tales of yore are lengthy and belong in libraries and dusty cloisters, and not at the dinner table. Though I may have many years on all at this table but our elven friend, I plan to enjoy many more, one way or another. Ask me again in a generation and we’ll talk history then.”

Just about to take a bite of sorbet, Leastrie stops, spoon held in midair, then swallows hard and sets it down.
"It is true that elves live longs lives and our eyes see much. Being a student and protector of lore, I have read and seen...a bit of history made." Clearing his throat, the elf prepares to launch into a story, his mind racing for a proper subject. "In my lifetime, though I am biased of course, one of the most notable events I have witnessed is the growth of the Pathfinder Society. From humble beginnings of a few men meeting together at a tavern, the Society has grown in size and influence. I believe the Society has proven, if it needed to be proven, that knowledge far outweighs might. That without knowledge, men are nothing more than survivors on a hostile land. Without knowledge, we would be thrown in another age of darkness. I believe it is an astounding achievement to note how the Pathfinder Society has grow and become the caretakers of the world's collective knowledge."
DM Rah |
"Well spoken." Ofarah smiles at Leastrie. "It is for such reasons I that I requested the presence of Pathfinders at this dinner."
Finer discussions follow of the history of the Pathfinder Society, and the Final course of the meal eventually arrives featuring a rich Rahadoumi coffee and a choice of either a fine Taldan dessert wine or a dark Molthuni brandy. As she stirs her brandy into her coffee, Ofarah leans toward Lady Gloriana Morilla and asks frankly.
“Lady Morilla, you come from a very influential house here in the city, correct? How do you find the nobles here differ from those in your homeland? In my brief time here, I’ve come to find a number of differences between the aristocracy of Lamasara and of Absalom.”
The Taldan noble clears her throat demurely, and responds to the inquiry. “House Morilla has been an influential player in the political scene here on Kortos since well before my father’s father’s time, and thus I was born here. While I’ve spent a great deal of time in the courts of Oppara, I much prefer aristocratic life in Absalom to that of mainland Taldor. Until our great nation rids itself of much of the bureaucracy that serves as more of a hindrance than a benefit to the upper classes, Taldor will never reattain its former glories.”

J'ngo Mordrak |
Mordrak smiles at Ofarah's question. Ah! The nobility of our world! I admirize their epicurean tastes even while I sometimes find myself mystified by their tendency to be overripe. We are all children of Golarion, are we not? And our caliber should be measuringified by our deeds. We are wise to be recollecting this.
Quiven Glist |
What did he say? blurts the halfling. He doesn't seem to care much for the talk of politics or of nobility.
DM Rah |
Ofarah laughs softly at Mordrak's response. "I enjoy your manner of speech, sir. Presented almost like a sweet desert for this extensive dinner party."
After clearing the table, the servants light a number of hookahs, filling the air with the scent of rose-infused tobacco from Molthune. Amenopheus takes his leave without partaking in any of the post-meal smoking, thanking the hostess and wishing all remaining guests well. Between puffs of her personal hookah, Ofarah poses a final question to the elf she knows as Ceralan.
“Finally, my old friend Ceralan. Either time has changed your timeless features or muddied my own memory, for I feel as though we are total strangers now. Tell me of a time we spent together in Lamasara in my youth, that others can share in our friendship.”
The elf blinks silently for a moment as if in deep thought. “Why, my lady, our memories are our own. Perhaps our fine guests would rather we discuss something they too hold dear: a sentiment from childhood, or a memory held in the forefront of the mind?” Ceralan gestures to Quiven as he makes the suggestion.
Everyone notices that Ofarah seems confused by the deflection.

Ceralan refuses to respond to Leastrie, and his quiet rebuff marks the beginning of the end of the dinner party. Ofarah, distracted by the odd exchange, turns to Omrax and says, "We shall discuss such things a little later."
As the conversation draws to a close, Zarta Dralneen, Aaqir al’Hakam, and Lady Gloriana rise and make their way to the front of the embassy to be retrieved by their respective sedans and escorts, leaving only the your group, Ofarah, Ceralan, and the embassy’s servants in the dining room.
