Fearless stands quietly behind Brother Butterfly as he gives his report.

He just likes to hear himself speak doesn't he? Fearless goes deep into thought as he drowns Brother Butterfly's words out into a droning noise in the background. I wonder if he was some sort of traveling preacher before, trying to bring more into his 'flock'....

"That's a tiger." Brenton says, noticing Cats' focus. "Though Debis always said it was a panther."

Pinkie:
The shadow lantern has stopped spinning since Brenton has turned his attention to you. It projects animals in silhouette, and once you move to view the image Cats is pointing at upon the wall you see, just beneath the outstretched hand of a golden statue placed in the shrine within the alcove, what appears to be a cat.

Having little knowledge of most of the common residents of Briarstone, Winter calls over York to hear Brother Butterfly's list of casualties. He shakes his head sadly upon hearing about Hobes.
"She was a good orderly. One of my best. Suppose going out fighting is better then getting turned by one of these nightmares."
Winter nods agreement. "May Pharasma meet her at the Boneyard and shepherd her soul to the afterlife."

Pinkie takes a long look and examines the alcove before adding his 2 cents in.

"For once I think you are completely right. It looks like that statue is petting a cat. Kate says Maybe we just need the lantern to get past the darkness and the boy can stay here."

Then to Brenton he asks "Did that lantern help comfort your brother in some way?

"Hey Pinkie...do you think this is real gold?" Cats hefts the statue (if he can). "Brenton, is this your statue? Where did it come from?"

Is it real gold? How big?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The statue depicts a golden winged female angel with a sunlike halo. From the weight in his hand Cats thinks it is made from bronze and coated with gold leaf.

Brenton shakes his head at it. "As far as I know it's always been part of the shrine."
To Pinkie, he gives a sad nod. "This lamp is all we have left of our parents. It has seen us both through a lot." His lip trembles and he fights back tears.

In the middle of Brother Butterfly's conversation with Winter and York he looks over and notices Cats appraising the small statue.

Butterfly:

I don't think I have to point out that toying with holy idols is disrespectful.

The one that Cats holds is a statue of Sarenrae, the Dawnflower.

Sarenrae is a goddess of the sun, healing, and redemption. Her greatest virtues are temperance and patience and her followers are farmers, healers, and redeemed evil-doers.

Instant understanding crosses Brother's face. Normally proficient in body and facial control, whatever "clicked" leaves a telltale sign. As The Mariner would say, " looks like you got slapped with a Rock Cod".

The look of interest replaces the Rock Cod face, as BB excuses himself from the conversation with Lady Winter.

He moves toward Pinkie and Cats. Observing the scene.

Fearless goes back to his bed and pulls the painting out from underneath and gazes upon it once again.

I still don't get what this means!

He glances at the Shapeshifter once again as he speaks with Cats and Pinkie.

Looks as if he has those two under his sway. Perhaps I can talk to the fishman, if we make it out of here that is.

Adalgrim shrugs his shoulders and stuffs the painting back underneath, for now. His mind is simply too full and broken at the moment to figure out something so complex. Perhaps it will only take time.

Grabbing his bag he moves back towards the exit and lets out a sharp whistle as he taps his foot.

"Winged Goddess?" Cats says, not really knowing much about the gods or goddesses. "Sarenare? Nah...I don't think she's for me. I mean, I like her just fine, but...uh...uh..." Cats rubs the back of his neck after he puts the statue down. "...uh...I can't really remember who floats my celestial boat, but I'm mostly sure it isn't Sarenrae...or wait, maybe...maybe it is..."

Cats looks around to rest of the idols, hoping that one clicks in his memory then his gaze settles again on Sarenrae.

I know I used to have one. It used to talk to me. I think. Used to. I think.

Cats face scrunches up as if he's trying to remember something, but then his face and shoulders droop...there is nothing to recall.

"I dunno. It's like my name. I know it isn't 'Cats', it's 'Cats', you know? And I know I like a god or goddess, but...I dunno. I dunno right now. Sarenrae is a good goddess, right Brother?"

"It's nice that you remember these things, Brother, or we'd be in a lot of trouble in here. Good thing you remember Desna. Better that she even remembers you."

Cats looks at the statue again.

"Uh...maybe huh...maybe it was her.."

The Mariner frowns at the attention a mundane statue was getting. Though truly he was annoyed that he had no idea of the significance or truth in the religious matter. "Looks like it'd make a good club." he rudely comments to those in the room. "That lantern looks more promising. Is it something the kids in the dark is going to remember and come to? I say we still bring him with us - ain't gonna make his nightmares any worse than already is."

"Redeemer, huh?" Cats scrunches up his nose then takes a seat, rocking in his chair as he thinks. "I could use some redemption, maybe. At least according to the Catterman, if he's right that is. "I can tell you more about her if you wish.
I dont know how I know so much about Serenae, but my brain is buzzing with information.

She was instrumental in the imprisonment of Rovagug.
A story in history tells of examples where she tried to warn her followers (for decades) about the perils of the rift at Gormuz.
Except each time they interpreted her instructions wrong. She even sent her Herald to the city of Gormuz, but they attacked the herald instead! Eventually She had to get involved directly.
Now, it's the PIT of Gormuz instead of the CITY of Gormuz.

Her favorite colors are Blue and Gold.
and Her sacred animal is the Dove.

BB looks a bit stunned that all that information spilled out.
Thinking, pondering, he continues.

You know, this Magical Headband/phylactary may be some of the reason I know so much. If you want to know more, we can talk while we walk to the other part of the Asylum. I should also let you borrow the phylactary and see if you can use it for contemplation.

"She has favorite colors?" Cats asks, pondering how and why gods would have or need favorite colors. And then he tries to remember his own favorite colors and realizes either doesn't have them or don't know what they are.

"I guess I could like them too if I was going to follow Sarenrae. And doves? I ain't cat nothing against doves. They sweet and all," Cats continues to rock in his chair as he thinks about things, like redemption and the guilty pit in his soul that he continues to stare down.

Eventually, Cats will think himself up and rise from his chair.

"C'mon Brenton, we should get you to your brother. You'll be able to talk him out of the dark, I'm sure. You can even bring your lamptern," Cats says.

Cats eyes go wide.

"Oh. O-cat, that sounds fine. I'll go talk to the prisoners about the darkness," Cats says and does so.

Going to speak with the prisoners that we captured last time.

Cats enters the room where the prisoners are being kept, checking on their restraints and their comfort (no reason to treat them badly when he's trying to be more redemptive).

"Hey guys, do you guys cat the room with the darkness? And sometimes the darkness seems to be crying?" Cats asks. "How did you all get through that? Is it dangerous? Anything to worry about?"

Cats finds the Mariner already walking through the prisoners, "I got a better idea than asking this bed wetting lot." taking his rope, he picks docile male from the group and ties off a no slip knot around the waist and blindfolds with some cloth. Fearless watches with eager eyes, holding his breath as he forgot all about the captured apostles.

He points to brother Butterfly. "Now that is a good idea! Maybe they have some sort of sign or device to pass through fine."

As they walk his mind tries to think of every possible outcome, though very few lead to good results.

Once at the door Fearless helps make sure that the knot is secured tightly while the Mariner urges the man forward into the darkness.

The Watchmen are definitely not in agreement.

Seeking more information about the darkness, Cats and the Mariner confront the prisoners captured the day before in the Administration halls. Meanwhile, Brenton's eyes have slowly widened to about the size of saucers as the conversation runs on about him, his brother, and the lamp.

"Did you find Debis? Is he stuck somewhere? What's going on?! Someone please tell me what's happened to my brother!"

***

Cats and the Mariner find the prisoner's in good condition. Winter has dressed their injuries, and some of them are a lot more reasonable after a day of food and rest. The handsome man is the first to volunteer information, describing how they found themselves trapped south of the darkness.

"We were sent by Zandalus a few days ago to find any documents about him in the doctor's office or in the records room." He says around a mouthful of stew. Pointing at the food with his spoon, he adds, "Hey, this ain't bad. Could use some salt, but I guess you would need to get into the kitchen pantries for that, eh? Anyway, I don't know what darkness you are talking about. It sounds like it was in the guard post between the dayroom and dining hall, right? Well we took the guard post during the riots, and it was clear when we passed through, but lots of strange things have been happening around the asylum, creatures and spirits popping up out of nowhere, so maybe something happened in the last couple days. But last I saw the guard room was clear. There was a doppleganger in the dayroom, but it was busy throttling an old lady to death and didn't see us slip by. We searched the administration offices for hours, but didn't find anything. And when we tried to head back, the door to the dining hall was stuck, and blood was leaking around it. So we all say 'to hell with that' and tried to go around, but the meeting room was blocked, and swarming rats all around the library, so we had to run and hide out in that storage room. I suppose it was fortunate that you came along, right?"

Ignoring the story, the Mariner grabs him and starts escorting him toward the dark room. He juggles his stew as he's prodded along. "Careful now, I'm eating this. So, where are we goin?"

"To get more soup" the Mariner answers and pulls the blinds over the man, "in a secret room." Then gives Brother the don't f$!@ this up with your psalms look. Nodding for the others to follow, the Mariner reaches the door, motions for Fearless Pink Cat to swing it open, and scoots the apostle right in. He then takes the slack in his hand and readies himself. "Yes keep going, feel around for the other door."

Fearless eagerly peeks around the corner of the door, into the darkness to see, or rather hear what the man's fate is. "Find the door on the opposite end and open it. Let us know once it is open." He calls out into the darkness. "And don't add to the crying that is already in there."

Though his plan is not eagerly agreed upon, no one seems eager to get in the Mariner's way either as he prepares to go fishing in the darkness. Pushed ahead, the bagged apostle stumbles through the door and out of sight.

"Hey now, that wasn't necessary!" The man calls out in surprise. "You forgot to cut some holes in this thing for me. I could have tripped over something! Ow!" Something clatters across the floor. "Like that!"

As the man complains the oddly layered sounds of sobbing begin to echo in the darkness and the small voice heard before cries out. "No no no no no.. Stay away!"

Brenton hands his shadow lantern to Pinkie and Brother Butterfly illuminates the wick with Desna's holy light. Vivid silhouettes of animals spring to life on the walls of the Dayroom, and as Pinkie approaches the door the darkness begins to fall away. Just inside the apostle staggers about. Though still mostly blind under the bag, he is able to see enough to follow the source of light and limp out of the room.

Beyond the door a scene of tragedy is revealed to the Watchmen.

~Soundtrack~

The room is in shambles, as if an explosion tore it apart - flecks of dark blood spatter the walls, broken furniture clutters the floor, racks of blunt weapons have been looted and overturned, blood-soaked torn clothing and padded restraints lay discarded, glass lamps shattered to pieces and scattered.

Huddled behind the splinters of a chair in the far corner is a strange, small creature. Clothed in rags and scraps of paper illustrated with crude charcoal drawings, it has a ratlike skull for a head which seems to be the source of Debis' voice. Brother Butterfly recognizes the creature as an attic whisperer, the spawn of a lonely or neglected child's death. Rather than animating the body of the dead youth, an attic whisperer rises from an amalgam of old toys, clothing, dust, and other objects associated with the departed—icons of the child's neglect.

"I see it Brenton... I see it..." The creature says in relieved sobs as it steps out from the debris and shuffles closer. As the light of the lantern passes over it the sad remains begin to glow. With each step pieces of its form fall away, like leaves from a tree in autumn. As it reaches Pinkie and the lantern the last of it collapses, leaving behind a slowly fading light.

"Debis..." Tears streaming down his face, Brenton watches from the door as his brother's spirit passes on to the afterlife in peace.

Across the room the door to the Dining Hall awaits.

Great job everyone! Advance to level 3!

Tears leak from Brother Butterfly's eyes. They roll down his cheeks and splash upon the chest plate of his clothes. Taking in a scene as powerful as this hurts his soul. Knowing what Debis is makes it even more impactful.

Appropriate Music

His soul hurts.

" Desna show me a sign that I'm on the right path. Please."
Turning to Brenton, Jasper can only mumble." I hope , beyond hope ,that someday you will feel better about being able to say goodbye to your brother. It might not be today, but it's my prayer that sometime in the future- you feel that way."

After 30 seconds of soaking up the scene, the ramifications , and possible after effects on this poor child. Brother Butterfly notices the loose leaf and rough chalk picture drawings that used to make up Debis's makeshift body. He steps 10ft into the room and picks up the crude charcoal drawing and sees ..... a butterfly.
He places Debis's drawing within his own drawing kit.

His heart is filled with sorrow , his body is still leaking tears , but somehow he is spiritually empowered. Feeling a rush and divine understanding that he didn't have before. He knows in that minute he's closer to his God then he had been before.

He reaches down and pulls up a bauble, later handing it to the boy when no one is looking, "Your brother was in here, you and your soldiers be sure to protect it."

Pinkie paces uncomfortably waiting for Cats to return mumbling "Someone has to say something......I don't care if he gets mad......It crossed a line.....NO!.......Don't tell me to calm down."

Once Cats returns Pinkie turns and addresses the entire group "Are you all freekin crazy! There is no reason that boy needed to see any of that. Bringing him along was just a plane bad idea."

He then chucks the lantern at The Mariner

lantern: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
confirm: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

"And you" pointing at Mariner "Seance when do we go around throwing unarmed people into rooms where we know something bads gonna happen. he begins pacing again "I know we all done something bad to get us in here probably but that crossed a line. That makes us no better than the monsters.

Given that there's a tad bit of time before Cats return to the Guardroom. He puts his hand on the opposite door.
BB uses Doorsight to see what room is beyond. I think BB was there before -when Fearless went to the kitchens and we encountered the patient who then turned into a ghoul.

Not speaking to anyone in particular.
It is heartening to hear that our group has a good moral compass.
I am glad to be a part of a five-some of people that are willing to put their lives on the line for others.

With that said, Pinkie and his family - don't be too hard on The Mariner. This place bends the mind.
So, let's focus on getting to The kitchens and finding a way off this island with the survivors. That's goal number one.

Fearless sits in rapt, and unusual for him, silence as he watches Brother Butterfly peer through the wooden door as if it were glass.

"More darkness? Rivers of Blood? Wall eyes that weep acid?"

Cats shrugs.

"We didn't know what was in there, Pinkie. If you knew it was going to be so bad, you should have said something," Cats grouses back. "Don't get catting mad at me when you had plenty of catting time to catting say that it was going to be bad."

Cats eyes Pinkie up and down, then looks over at Fearless.

"How did you know it was going to be bad?"

I think we should do that with every room,... run out of worms pretty fast though. the Mariner was thinking when the lantern bangs off his thick skull. For a moment he actually felt bad and questioned the morals of his baiting technique, scratching his head.

"Nuffin different from fishin'. Wouldn't catch fish by diving into the water - you throw a line in. Besides, the bed-wetter was tied off and we didn't even lose him. And it's not like I threw the kid in there.

" You all knew they was somthing bad in there or else one of us woulda went in the first time and we wouldn't have been looking for a way to get rid of the darkness so hard.
Pinkie continues pacing

I aint saying I haven't done things to survive. I'm sure I have but that crossed a line and the further down that path you go well.... It was bad!

Pinkie stops in front of Brother Butterfly

"Right now we seem to be getting some sorta aid from Desna and a couple other gods but how long you think thats gonna last if we start acting like the monsters?

Then looking up at Brother Butterfly he adds.

By dismissing his actions and condoning them you might as well have had a hand on the man when he was shoved in.

sighing

"I don't know much about nuthing but i just know that was really bad and we can't do that sorta thing

He then looks at the Mariner

"You do something like that again and we will stop you"

With that last statement Pinkies voice changes ever so slightly and your not sure if by "we" he meant your group or himself and those unseen he sometimes converses with.

While waiting and with brother Butterfly preoccupied with staring at his wooden door, Fearless skips back over to Pinkie. Leaning on the corner and whispers to the strange man. "That shapeshifter been acting strange to you? I mean who leads a kid into that! Tsk...Tsk..."

Crossing his arms he shifts his pack on his back to ease his back pain. "You know he left a strange painting on my bed. Do you think he could possibly be leading us straight into the Dragon's maw? I don't quite trust him yet."

Pinkie, I agreed with you AND your family. We are not here to act like monsters.
But I said it before - especially when we had The Twins running with us (May he rest with his God), and I'll say it again.
I'm not under any illusion that I am NOT in an Insane Asylum. I know I will have to deal with people's "baggage". I will need to put myself in their shoes first, and while I won't understand them, I need to try.

I also need to focus on Desna (first and foremost) and saving the children, women, and male survivors to get off this island (secondly and in that exact order).

I am all about listening and having open dialogue. Please tell me YOUR focus. I want to know what it is, so we can go in the same direction.
