Kachada:
Huh, guess you just looked like an old buddy named Marsh. Might just be the stress of these circumstances. The name is Captain Steve Kachada, a supposedly honest cargo transporter assuming you ain't got nothin' against pigs, which I admit, I am kinda holdin' on to. You need freight hauled, I'm your man. Now sorry if I don't shake your hand, still kinda adjustin' to this rather interesting welcome.

Noren:

Ohek's brow furrows. If a man could be any more cross, you have not seen such a moment.

Heh. You never change do you Noren? Thinking you've got all the cards and have stacked the deck. I'll let you in on a little bit of my information, since yours seems to be misinformed; Mark Vans is not on Haven. We've been tracking him down for a while now, and he hasn't been there in months. I'm not saying he didn't leave a present or two behind, but he's long gone there. Now keep your nose out that business, if you know what's good for you.

He frowns.

You've got some gall, and you've sure got stones, and i'll be damned if you don't do good work, but I think unless you've got any other information for me then you've got nothing on the Alliance. Besides, who would believe an old con like you? We've got just as much dirt to shovel into your grave to, and you better remember that.

Kachada:

Marsh(all?) takes his hand back.

I see. Then it is as I thought, we have a different problem.

He turns to the man who brought you in.

Once you've taken our guest downstairs, send some of the clergy out to the port. It seems I've found one of the strays from my flock.

He turns back to you.

Alright Mr. Kachada, allow me to enlighten you. I am a humble servant of The Broken god, the ultimate power in the verse. He has seen fit to destroy civilization with the intent of bringing forth a new dawn for humanity, and we are but his servants.

He smiles...a little too widely.

What you have done, that you seem so confused about, is to pollute the very ground and skies of this universe by allowing swine to live. They are unclean, and by associating yourself among them you have thus made yourself, and your crew, unclean. It is our duty to cleanse the world before The Broken god comes, and so we must first cleanse those who are the most foul.

He walks back behind his desk.

You will serve an indentured servitude here until you have scoured this uncleanliness from your soul. Only then can you truly understand the blessings of The Broken god, and only then will you truly be clean.

He motions to the man in the coat.

Take him downstairs and give him a clean cell. We can figure out exactly the amount of purification later, once I have found my stray.

Random Door Hit? Even=Kachada, Odd=captors: 1d2 ⇒ 1

Kachada:

The men take you by the arm again and walk you out of the room, through a number of stone hallways, and down a flight of stairs.

Suddenly, your small party hears guttural screaming from somewhere. The sound is almost unhuman and echoing around the room you realize you're now in. Stone walls, steel door, and a shabby cot for surroundings.

The scream goes on and on, and it sounds like something is tearing at the very walls, before ending in a sickening THU-CRUNCH!!

The men around you look at each other before one of them roughly grabs you and you take off running. Only a few more steps beyond that and you hear someone else scream

My stomach... aaaaaugh! It's like someone's stuck a knife into it! Everything feels like it's on fire!

This is apparently not the norm, and your captors are more focused on what is going on somewhere down here, rather than you.

All of a sudden, one of the steel doors you've been passing slams open, seemingly of it's own accord,

Goon Defense: 1d5 - 1d5 ⇒ (4) - (2) = 2 Vs DC4

He skids across the hallway, and slams into the wall with a sickening thud. Old John's silhouette is outlined in the doorframe, and he looks very unhappy.

Old John:

As you're setting up for a running dive at the door, you hear a blood-curdling scream from somewhere,

My stomach... aaaaaugh! It's like someone's stuck a knife into it! Everything feels like it's on fire!

Ignoring it, you slam the door open...into the face of someone who was running down the hall. With a sickening thud, he flies across the hallway and slams into the wall. You step forward, and see the surprised faces of four individuals who you don't recognize, all armed to the teeth, and surrounding Captain Kachada.

Marsh:

Your screams seem to have drawn some attention. From the hallway, you hear a door crash open, and a sickening thud as someone or something hits something solid.

Kachada, Marsh, and Old John can all stop using spoilers now. Noren, you're still in the dark. Keep using them.

You can all also go back and read through the spoilers now, just don't act on things you don't know in character.

That there is a line you shouldn't cross. I'm no con, I'm a profession ship killer and explosive for hire. Besides, you would be surprised how many friends around you feel the same way and made the same deals.

But how about this. If Mark Vans really isn't working here, then you got a bigger problem. Because this cult is hell bent on finding something they are clamming is an artifact that will do some serious damage. And if it isn't Mark Vans work, it is a serious concern. Does the name Marsh Anthore trigger any alarms in your head? That's the name of what they are calling an artifact that will bring the destruction. Don't know if they have it but my sources say he is very close. My deal still stand. Quick and cleanly done for 50000TL.

Kachada, and Old John: That was your surprise round action. From here on out, we are in round-based combat. That means that the Goons go first, then Old John (and Marsh if he can join), then Kachada.

So, post your general plan of action (and unless it's an attack) don't post a roll unless I tell you what type and DC to make.

Darius, having finished your paperwork, you chartered a shuttle to Haven to meet up with the rest of the crew. Arriving on planet, you make your way to the Noble Savage and comm in to whomever is listening. Noren seems to be the only one who hears you over the comm channel.

However, Noren can't manage to reach Kachada, Marsh, or Old John on the comms at this time, but he does hear Darius looking to get let into the ship.

While a door to the face certainly caught everyone by surprise, Captain Kachada reacts first, assuring that he will not be trifled with. The goons are only a step behind, however, and the "Close Quarters" mean that this fight will most likely be decided by fists rather than guns.

Kachada, please give me a Quick attack roll against the goon you shot, though you'll probably hit just fine against his -3.

Goon defense roll: 1d5 - 1d5 - 2 ⇒ (2) - (3) - 2 = -3

The guy in the coat fires a shot at Old John while shouting,

Someone let these guys out! We've got trouble down here!!

...and then takes off running.

Goon Gunshot!: 1d5 - 1d5 + 2 ⇒ (1) - (3) + 2 = 0

The other two goons tag-team Kachada, using their rifle butts to try and force him into submission.

Create Advantage DC 2: 1d5 - 1d5 + 2 ⇒ (2) - (1) + 2 = 3
Advantage: "Too Close Quarters" created in Goon's favor.

Goon Rifle Butt Attack: 1d5 - 1d5 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (4) - (5) + 2 + 2 = 3 Using "Too Close Quarters"

Need a Quick attack roll from Kachada (DC -3), a defense roll from Kachada (DC 3) and a defense roll from Old John (DC 0). I'll post results when I have rolls from both, as well as the first round actions from Kachada and Marsh (seeing as I already have the action from Old John.

Noren:
Noren, you hear the voice of Darius (your pilot) over the comms. Of everyone you expected to hear, it isn't him. He's apparently outside the ship looking to get in. You're not sure how much he heard of the conversation your currently having, but it might be a good idea to let him in.

Noren/Darius:
You call yourself what you will, Noren, but we both know the truth.
Scaring me hasn't worked in the past, and it won't work now; as for this "Marsh Anthore" character? Never heard of him. Either he's someone new or you're sorely misinformed.

Ohek makes a motion towards the screen.

You're wasting my time Noren. For old times sake, I'm not even gonna come after you. You might even finish yourself off for me, given what it sound like you've gotten yourself into.

He smiles.

You and your artifact chasing... You know, for all of the "End of the Verse" artifacts you've been looking into, you've pretty much been all hype. If I remember right, that was one of the reasons we stopped hiring you, you never delivered on a single one of those artifacts. I do hope this one pans out for you, but this conversation is over.

Ohek cuts the call.

And really, if you are going to try and bring the Alliance down on us, at least do it for more than 50k! I do not have time to deal with that crap! Old John ducks behind the door of his cell as a shot ricochets off of it, causing the goons in the hall to "Dive For Cover".

Advantage created for Old John due to succeeded with style on defense roll. You can use that advantage once during this encounter for a +2 to a roll.

Kachada is having none of this and, using the confined space to his advantage, easily dodges away from the attacks of the goons.

Advantage "Clumsy Quarters" created for Kachada due to succeeding with style on defense roll. You can use that advantage once during this encounter for a +2 to a roll.

@ Old John - Works for me. Boost spent on attack; your total roll value becomes a +2 after using your boost.

@ Kachada - You forgot to add in the fact that you're being careful, and using your created boost. Your total roll value becomes a +1, if you were using your boost.

@ Marsh - You succeeded at a minor cost, for remembering your gun: You did bring it, but you realize that it isn't loaded... Also, the door is locked from the outside, but doesn't fit the best into the door jam. It might be possible to jimmy it, or knock it off its hinge, or something of the sort.

The fighting in the hallway remains heated! Old John makes a quick knife throw at a goon...

Goon Defense: 1d5 - 1d5 ⇒ (2) - (5) = -3

...and manages to dive in completely the wrong way, taking the knife full in the face! You succeeded with style, and created another boost, "Not Today, you!" that can be used during this encounter for a +2 to a roll.

Kachada uses his pistol-butt, swinging it at any face that gets close enough... (I assume, since he didn't say he was attacking, but that's the assumption I'm working with.)

Goon Defense: 1d5 - 1d5 ⇒ (2) - (1) = 1

...and manages to Daze one of the goons. Boost created for Kachada, "That looked like it hurt!" Remember, you can spend your boosts just like aspects: To give yourself a +2 to a future roll, to give someone else a -2 to a future roll, or to reroll a dice roll.

Marsh, hearing the commotion in the hallway, begins looking for a way to open his cell door.
Give me an Overcome roll, your choice of Approach, based on how you describe it. DC 2

  • Also, I just re-read the rules on Aspects (including Boosts created by attack rolls that tie, or other things.) You have to spend a FP to use them... The only time you can invoke an aspect for free is when you Succeed with Style at Creating an Advantage. Otherwise, any aspect you use costs you an FP.

We'll switch to playing that way after this encounter.

    @ Marsh--
From the depths of your mind bubbles up information regarding how to find one's way out of dark, underground areas. You realize there is an air current heading rightwards in the passage; Kachada agrees that this is the way he came down here with the goons, though with all the running he isn't quite sure of all the twists and turns to get out.

Luckily, one of the goons had a pistol of similar caliber with plenty enough rounds to load your weapon.

    @ Old John--
Your rifle is freshly loaded, and seems to be well maintained. It's weird though, you don't remember this particular group being armed with such up-to-date equipment.

    Old John:
What's really weird, is that you made very sure to have wiped this cult out of existence the last time you saw them...

As for your rummaging, unless you start looking into various cells along this floor (10 cells total, including the ones you and Marsh were in,) or start pulling apart the bodies, you don't see anything other than the bodies of four dead men, and stone walls leading off in two directions: right and left.

    Noren,Darius:
The com dies and a smile cracks from Noren.

Well, no easy pay day but useful information gained. Good to know Mark really is rogue, I should contact him on his encrypted line and see how he is doing. And Marsh at least seems to be a backroom secret still. Ohek is a bastard, but he has a terrible poker face and would brag about it being an honest waste of time over making it seem like he wasn't anything important. But I guess it's time to get a move on.

Noren unlocks the ship for Darius. The com network came online and can hear that the crew did all the busy work of finding them already. Now it's time to hunt them all down.

Darius, not a lot of time to explain but I'm sure you can tell from our coms that the guys got caught up in a mess with a cult. I tried to get us all a payday but no such luck. So let's hope they have some tithes we can pick for ourselves at the end. It sounds like they are underground so I'm going to message my contact guy to see what sewers have been 'advised' to keep away from and we will bust in there.

Noren throws Darius a charge he made.

Keep it safe and put it to good use when shit gets real

Noren messages Fex and asks where is a good place to start searching for the crew.

    @ Noren--
Between what you heard from Kachada's comm talk, and what you pieced together from Marsh, you've got an idea about what the crew is dealing with. However, currently all you hear from Kachada, Marsh, and Old John is static with bits of conversation; they are probably underground.

Fex is fairly quick to reply, through your usual channels.

Hey Noren, on the note of that 5000TL; I didn't get a chance to tell you on your way out, since you were in such a rush, but you ain't gonna pull the wool over my eyes. You know your usual fee is good info on new artifacts.

As for where to start, I know that there's been an influx of missing people reports out in old-town. Could be just the usual out there, could be something new. Dunno, but just what I've heard.

Fine, but I'm coming back for that bomb I disarmed later then. If you sell any of it, we will have an issue to sort out. But thanks for the info. We will catch up a bit more when I pop back to pick it up once this mess is fixed up.

Well Darius, not quite the nice welcome back you would have expected. But let's get a move on and find our friends.

Holy shit! Why do you insist on throwing these things! At least you have finally quit screwing with me and the red and green button crap! Anyways, I am going to get the ship ready to go without having to do all the boot-up procedures when we have guns firing at our asses.

While Noren is trying to get a hold of Fex, Darius is flipping switches and pushing buttons to get the ship out of low power mode.

I don't know where we will want to run off to, so I won't have any jump coordinates put in. That should get us going relatively quickly, at least for her... He trails off. Well, better go get Captain out of another mess.

Alright guys, I say we are well enough stocked up, I say it's time we get a move on. These creeps ain't gonna take themselves out. I'm fairly certain I came from this way, He says gesturing to the right, Old John, you seem to have some sort of history with them, I will let you take point. Marsh, I want you in the back and on high alert, we don't need any of them sneaking up on us. We can sort everything else out once we have gotten ourselves safely out of here. Alright lads, form up and let's go kill some pig haters, Kachada cheers as he falls in behind Old John.

Marsh lets Old John and the captain know which way he thinks the exit is, then decides to fall back a short ways, hiding in the shadows. The dingy fluorescent lights are flickering, casting a sickly green glow on the corridors of the prison and there are presumably a number of spots to hide. He keeps his gun at the ready and is prepared to fire a shot either ahead at a goon who's ready to charge them at the front or hand out a bullet to anyone in the back who wants to get the drop on them.

Because they work wonders when the numbers are against us. So stop complaining and get ready for a fight.

Noren and Darius make their way out to old-town, using the coms level of static to like a hot or cold detector for seeing if they were getting closer to the group. Looking for any reaction, a passageway to go underground, or one of the symbols the cult is using that might be marking what they use.
