Sorry, forgot to roll for the crit threat. I guess I was a bit too excited with the natural 20 on a charge power attack against the BBEG. Can't edit the post anymore, so here goes nothing:

Crit confirm: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 2 - 1 = 21

…I will be sacrificing a goat to the RNG.

@DM: Thanks for the explanation! It was just a general question that I didn't find answered in the rules. I was not thinking explicitly in this case.

Jaed is horrified when Millsy falls and then he spectates incredulous Etam's attack. "I like this way of yours of dealing with these skeletons, Etam. Way more effective than my talking, it seems."

Jaed moves around the eastern column, trying to flank the skeletons. He stops next to it and he prepares to hit anything that comes his way.

Before he even got a change to turn around, Etam's mighty warhammer, fueled by his righteous rage at seeing such an adorable kitty fall slams into the talking skeleton's armor, pushing through and smashing its skeleton. He bony abomination never even knew what hit him as the cold fire in his eyes starts to fade.

Well, that was somewhat anti-climactic of a BBEG. Etam just barely confirmed and just barely did enough damage to kill him.

So surprised is he at the skeleton's sudden collapse that Artair completely misses his own target. In what will likely be their last few seconds on this plane, the remaining two skeletons reach their bony hands towards the dwarf, hoping to do as much damage as possible in the time left.

I believe 19 is Artair's normal AC, so it should be 17 now that he's raging. But he should also have 4 temporarily hit points
Skeleton 1
Claw 1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Claw 2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

…What? I expected to make a healthy dent into this guy's hp, not destroy it completely =(

As the talking skeleton crumbles to the ground, Etam raises an eyebrow 'Well, I guess we established this is not Kassen'. He moves to Artair's side to prevent the other undead reaching Millsy and Dimira.

"Diplomacy is usually a good strategy, Master Zandorias, but perhaps not so much with a talkative coward with a big sword!" He says and swings his warhammer in a wide arc trying to hit both remaining skeletons:

Northern skeleton, unless Jaed destroyed it:
Cleave power attack: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 7 - 1 = 16
Bludgeoning damage: 1d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 2 = 9

Southern skeleton, or nothing if Jaed destroyed the previous/the first attack misses:
Cleave power attack: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 7 - 1 = 18
Bludgeoning damage: 1d8 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 2 = 15

MotW NPCs Definitely not a vampire Slides | Knowledge Checks

I feel like at low levels the amount of damage that is done relative to everybody's HP is kind of awkward like that.

The combined efforts of Jaed and Etam are enough to fell the remaining two skeletons. The final sounds of battle slowly fade from the room, leaving only silence.

Out of combat. You still have the unconscious Dimira, the burning flame in this room, and a couple of places not yet explored.

Meanwhile Artair stalks about the room. Other than the talking skeleton's very nice longsword and chainmail now slumped in a pile and the Everflame, the only other things of note in this room are four empty sarcophagi and the one intact sarcophagus. Western Room:
This crypt contains the resting place for some of the raiders that attacked Kassen so many years ago. The central sarcophagus has been disturbed, its lid lying broken on the ground in front of it. The corpse of a masked man lies beside it.

If you have it, you may attempt a any/all of the following: Heal (can be made untrained), Kn(Religion), Kn(Arcana).

Artair wrinkles his nose as he approaches the corpse: it stinks to high heaven! But after searching the body he finds a map leading to the crypt you're in along with a note that says "The amulets are entombed with Kassen and Asar", a stick of some sort, some leather bracers, some kind of horn, 354 gold in newly minted coins, and a book with some writing he doesn't recognize.

Dimira immediately perks up upon hearing her brother's name. "Roldare? He's alive? What of the others?" She takes a shaky breath for answering why she is down here, clearing remembering unpleasant thoughts. "I was upstairs with Gerald and Varak when those...things came and attacked us. We tried our best to escape, but there were too many of them. The big one...Asar, he grabbed me and dragged me off as he let his creatures handle the rest of us. He wanted to know what had happened since his death. He seemed convinced we were there to rob the crypt and kept talking talking about 'retrieving his amulet'."

She wipes away a few tears. "But please, I must go see my brother. He must surely think that I'm dead."

Is it possible that, in the end, Asar was right and they were also hired to steal those amulets after the first attempt three months ago failed?

"We should make sure that Kassen's sarcophagus has not been opened and that his amulet is still there. It is clear that someone is after those medallions and there is the possibility that they have taken them."

As he does that, he sees Artair moving towards the eastern room and follows: "We will return as soon as we have verified the area is clear. Then we can light up the torch, go upstairs to retrieve Masters Roldare, Solmonath and Bottle-kisser and finally be out of this place."

To determine if something is magical, you need either Detect Magic or at least a 25 on an Appraise check. Spellcraft is more for identifying magical items (which requires that you also use it with Detect Magic).

Finnrick:
You have no idea if any of the items are magical. They're certainly all of very fine quality though; at least the non-weapon/armor equivalent of masterwork.

You also able to tell that the mask worn by the bandit has religious significance, but it's not any of the more well known gods. As such you can't quite remember what religious sect the man was a part of.

Dimira looks a bit sheepish at Jaed's question. "We were...preparing the crypt for you. But it wasn't supposed to be like this! There have never been monsters like this lurking about! It was supposed to be just some dusty old tomb with some traps here and there."

It doesn't take more than a quick scan to see that yes, Kassen's tomb had definitely been disturbed. The lid is open, but other than some broken chain links around his neck, the remains seem remarkably undisturbed: Kassen's full plate as well as his gleaming longsword still lie presumably just as they were when originally placed there.

As far as you can tell, the stick is beautifully crafted though at the end of the day, it's just a stick. You think you could maybe sell it for around 4-6 gold. The horn is likewise beautifully made and far more practical as it could serve as a musical instrument. It's a light gray in color and decorated with swirling clouds though it doesn't appear to be made out of any precious metal. You think it could fetch somewhere between 90 to 120 gold. The bracers seem more similar to things you've dealt with before and again, are of excellent quality (if a bit dusty), so you think you could maybe sell them for 140-150 gold.

Asar's gear seems to have been a masterwork longsword and regular chainmail.

As for the book, Jaed isn't able to make heads or tails of it or determine if the handwriting is the same as the note.

"…Ok, if that is your wish and we are all done and ready to leave.". Etam puts the chainmail in the bag and moves toward the everflame. He first helps Artair close Kassen's tomb and then, somewhat grudgingly, gets the lantern. He passes a bit of the flame to it and gently closes the lid.

When you light the lantern from the Everflame, there's a swift whoosh of air. When you next look, there's a spectral form standing before you. The figure appears to be that of a human man wearing full plate armor with a longsword strapped to side. He looks suspiciously like the figure in various art pieces you have thus far passed.

"Brave heroes, I thank you for ending the threat my ancient enemy Asar posed. Without your timely intervention I have no doubt that he would have raised an army of undead and finally managed to complete his age old goal of razing the town. Though several lives have been lost, many more have been saved. Let us hope that this is the last time any will have to deal with his wrath. To express my gratitude, please allow me to present you with these items."

He moves over to the open sarcophagus, reaching in to pull out a few items to give to all of you. "First, here is my shield. May it serve you as well as it did me. Though some say that the best offense is a good defense, sometimes the reverse is true as well. I found that many an enemy does not expect a defensive tool to serve as a weapon, so this shield was often able to get where my sword could not."

Next he pulls out a blue-green gem. It almost seems to glow in the light of the Everflame as the insides seems to swirl oddly. "Next, take this gem. It was given to me by a village on a sea when I helped fend off some pirates. Though I never had a need to use it myself, they assured me that if I were ever in dire peril, I could smash it and bring forth a creature of water to aid me."

Third, he tugs at the armor in the stone coffin, pulling off 4 scales and handing one to each of your. "Then take one scale each from my armor. As you have done me the favor of felling my old foe, you may call on me once in the future. There I will convince the spirits of luck to favor you for one task."

Finally, he pulls out a bag. "Last, but not least, a bag to carry your treasures in, for I have no doubt many adventures await you in your future. This bag will serve you well, for it is no ordinary thing. No matter how much you place in, it will not grow heavier. It will also fit far larger things than it would appear."

Now done, he pauses, looking at each of you in turn. If you wish to respond or ask him questions, now is your chance to do so. Otherwise I'm guessing you're heading to the last room.

Loot (in game terms):
* +1 bashing heavy shield
* Elemental Gem (water)
* Type 1 Bag of Holding
* The scale will allow you to reroll any one attack roll, saving throw, or skill check after the roll is made but before the results are revealed. You must take the result of the second roll, even if it is worse. Once this power has been used, the scale crumbles to dust.

We thank you for these gifts. And are honored to have done this. I am curious about a few things, and if these offend you, I apologize. But why did Asar have such venom for you? And why did these bandits break in to steal the amulets from both you and Asar, which we have not found in our adventure. Are these items that will endanger our town? Is there anything that we can do to make sure that Asar does not return to haunt us in the future? And what do we need to do to put this place back together properly for you?

I'm picturing Kassen as a cross between oprah and santa claus now: "you get a scale, you get a scale, everyone gets a scale!"

As he utters the words about the pale light, the apparition materialises in the room. He takes a step forward, his hand over the hammer without drawing it, calculating in his head wether the magic weapon oil he applied earlier is still active.

He watches Kassen handing out his gifts and finally bows his head: "We thank you, sir. I do not wish to disrespect you, but how can we be sure you are indeed Kassen and not another test from this crypt, ready to finish us as soon as we let our guard down?"

Given that Jaed took 20 to examine something, the magic oil would have definitely run out by now.

The ghost chuckles. "Well, if you had a paladin or cleric in your midst, you could at least tell that I'm not evil. Other than that, I could undoubtedly bore you with the minute details of my life, but given that I've been gone a few hundred years and none of you look especially scholarly inclined, I suspect that I could simply make up answers and you would be none the wiser." He shrugs.

He purses his lips at Artair's first question. "It's little known, but Asar and I used to travel together. I fear he felt cheated on our last adventure when we divided the spoils, though I'm not sure why. I think he hoped to reclaim some of the treasure we found by attacking the town. As to the bandits, I can only speculate about their motives. Oddly enough, the amulets seemed to be the only things they were interested in, so they weren't your typical tomb robbers. It's possible they heard that our amulets would open the way to the vault Asar and I plundered so long ago, though why they'd be interested in it now, I'm not sure. They'd still have to find the third piece anyway."

Third piece....that sounds intriguing. We found several of the bandits, and unfortunately their corpses were old. I am assuming that we vanquished several undead that were once these robbers. We thank you for the gifts, and we hope to use them wisely. And we will let those in the town who are scholarly inclined know about this. Is there anything the town should know to defend itself against another return of Asar? Could you give us any guidance on that, before we leave?

So did Oprah Clause give use the toy sack?

"Fair enough. If you are indeed Kassen, it is an honour to meet you, sir, even if in such dire circumstances." Etam says, though part of him is still suspicious.

After hearing the answer to the Artair's question, the spearman asks: "Where is the third piece, sir? It would be good to send out a warning to the whatever authority oversees that area to prevent something like what happened here."

@Artair: I think we got a bag of holding where we can put all the loot we got. Might be polite to wait until Kassen has left before we get everything, though.

@DM: thanks, I knew that, but not sure if Etam did and, well, he can hope.

is Finnrick/Uthraed fine? been some time since we've seen him around =(

Jaed listens to the conversation but looks more interested in the presents from Kassen. However, when he hears the answer to Artair's question he raises his head.

"Tell us more about that vault, please. Where was it? How do those amulets and the third piece work? And what did you take from it?"

"Often the key to keeping a dead man dead is not to go descrating his grave. I suspect the only reason Asar rose this time was due to those bandits. Most likely as long as that doesn't happen again, I think he'll stay sleeping. Although it couldn't hurt to ask the Pathfinder Society to send a few clerics to bless the place if they have time."

"As to the third piece, we gave it to the third member of our group: Iramine, an elven sorceress. Given the long life span of the elves, it's possible she's still alive, but for all I know, she sold it long ago. I...don't remember too much about the vault itself though." He rubs his head, frowning slightly and with a far off look in his eyes. "Only that it had great treasure and the three pieces of the amulet served as both the key and the map there when assembled." He shakes his head slightly and blinks a few times to bring you all in to focus again. "Were there any more questions?"

M human Fighter 3 | HP 32/35 | AC21 FF18 T13 | CMB: +7 CMD: 20 | F +5 R +2 W +1 | Init +2 | Per +4

"Very well. We will inform the mayor about this and arrange for the clerics to bless the place once we are back at Kassen. Regarding Iramine, I imagine it wil not be too difficult to find a scholar who knows enough about local history to shed some light on who she is and where we might be able to find her."

The warrior waits to see if his companions have further questions. After they are all done, he bows to Kassen: "Sir, you have our deepest thanks for your assistance. We shall allow you to return to your earnt rest. May we one day be as skilled as you."

Jaed nods as Kassen speaks. "Looks like we have some homework to do when we get back so I suggest we get going. Thanks for your help sir, and may you rest in peace."

Finnrick who has been silent for the entire conversation bows to Kassen. "You will have to excuse my silence I have been in my head. Millsy and I thank you and if you ever have need of us in the future, please, call on us."
