Sir Florace:
The captives seem to be battered and brutalized, but relatively healthy. Healthy enough for hard labor anyway.

The key does indeed unlock their shackles. Their clothes are tattered and they look upon you first with fear, then confusion, and then dawning hope. The first slave is a human woman with relatively short, untidy hair. Her posture is slumped from a great deal of time stuck in the awkward tunnels, and her skin, though once tan, clearly hasn't seen the sunlight in a while. Her tattered clothes look to have once been a simple worker's outfit.

The other two slaves are a male and female human. The man looks like he once sported a well kept beard, but it has long since grown out into a rather shaggy mess. Likewise, his once short hair now reaches down to his shoulders. He stands slightly in front of the other woman in a slightly protective stance. Her hair is long and tangled and her skin is pale. She seems to be standing as close to the other man as she can without actually touching him, peering at you from over his shoulder. From what you can tell, both of them seem to be wearing dirty, ragged clothes that once may have been very respectable. Not expensive clothes, but clearly not an outfit meant for manual labor.

The man glances at his two companions before nervously licking his lips to answer Sir Florace's question. "Yes I...I think we're alright. As well as can be expected anyway. We can walk. Are...are you here to rescue us?" His voice cracks slightly at the end, unable to hide a note of hope in it.

"We are here to stop the kobolds from causing trouble, like kidnapping you. You are free, but we'd like to know a bit more about what is going on down here, if you're willing to answer a few questions before going back to town."

"Are they having you build something down here? What has been going on with the kobolds lately? How long have you been down here? Where were you taken from? What are your names?" Arden asks the rescued humans, giving them time to answer after each question.

The man blinks slowly, frowning in thought. His speech is slow and deliberate. "They've been having us build some things, but mostly small trinkets: blankets, animal pelts, small statues, and the like. I'm afraid we don't really know what they've been up to; we're mostly kept in here working. They're nearly always talking in that strange language of theirs except when they're giving us orders."

When you ask about how long they've been there, the man squints at you and asks the date. Assuming you respond, he pauses to calculate something and then answers, "Me and my wife Sela here" he indicates the woman he had been protecting "Have been here...a couple of months I think?" He looks at Sela, who nods silently in agreement. "Bophre's been here longer though. Bophre, how long have you been here?"

The other woman, Bophre, speaks quickly, every once in a while cringing as though expecting a blow only to continue when none comes. "Iff'n that be tha date then...four, five months? Lordy, is tha' all? I coulda sworn 'twas longer. There I was, just a-mindin' my own business, takin' a bit o' a break from working with a nice walk see, and here alongs come these lizardfolk, bold as ya please. Took me by surprise, they did, and a hop, skipp'n a jump later, here I am. Same sorta thing happen'd ta ya, right Carlo?"

The man, Carlo, nods. "Me and Sela had just finished selling our wares in Belhaim--we peddly religious charms, y'see--when we were jumped on Verduran Highway." He shakes his head sadly. "All those charms did naught to help us. And I suppose these savages probably just burned them all up as I doubt they even have a god." He turns to his wife. "I guess we'll have to start from scratch, m'dear." The woman whisper's something in his ear*, and he nods. "Yes, yes, you're right of course." He turns to bow stiffly to you all. "Thank you for your timely rescue my friends."

Carlo rubs the back of his head ruefully. "We mostly only saw our guards. They switched out now and then, but to be honest, all these creatures look pretty much the same to me. We spent most of our time in here And you must've seen the room with the well; that's where they let us eat. Only other room we ever saw was the one they let us sleep in, next to the well room. Big, old cave that was-" He's interrupted by Bophre.

"Yep, yep, big room! 'bout tha only one we could actually stand up in. Deep trench with only a lil' bridge ta gets people cross on. They'd have us sleep on t'other side ta makes it harder ta escape."

Carlo nods his agreement to this. "On our side they'd put kobold guards on these ledges out of reach to make sure we weren't up to anything. As for traps and sneakiness, well, I wouldn't put it past them lizardy-slitherin' types."

Bophre pipes up again. "Don't be daft! This's their home. Who traps their own home?"

"They're not human, Bophre" Carlo explains with an air of tired patience. "You can't expect them to act like us." He turns back to the group. "As for other captives, if they have any, we didn't see them."

Sir Florace does not find anything particularly interesting.

Before leaving, Bophre turns to you all. "When ya all get back ta town, stop by Malak farm. It wouldn't be much, but I'm sure me ma would luv ta try ta thank ya for saving her dearest daughter." She adds softly under her breath. "Iffn she doesn't skin me afirst fer getting meself inta this mess inna first place anyway."

After seeing the three off, you return to the well room and then head East. A short walk brings you to a large cave with straw strewn across the floor. The ceiling vaults to a height of twelve feet. Three ledges, eight feet off the ground, look out over the main cavern. A five-foot-wide, twenty-foot-deep trench runs north to south through the western half of the cave, with just one five-foot wide bridge of natural stone allowing passage from one side to the other. There appears to be a small pit on the other side of the trench.

Since this room is bigger than previous sections, medium creatures don't have the -2 to hit in here. Arrows on the map indicate the ledges.

Perception; if you make both checks, check both spoilers.

DC 10:
There appear to be some small, motionless forms on the ledges on the other side of the trench. From the slight noises coming from them, you think they're living creatures of some sort. Possibly kobolds, but it's hard to tell from this distance.

DC 20:
The nearest ledge seems to have two kobolds lying down on it. Their breathing pattern suggests that they're awake.

The black area that you're all next to is the trench. It's pretty small. They way they drew it, I guess it kind of looks like a wall. And yes, the things with arrows are the ledges.

Sir Florace can tell that the floor of this room has been used to sleep upon. The sunburst-looking area appears to be a simple fire pit.

You find about the same thing as Sir Florace. You can tell that this area gets a fair amount of traffic, and it's fairly well kept. It seems like it's just a fairly simple sleeping area.

Perhaps of more interest is that now that you're closer, you can tell that on the ledges are actually 6 kobolds (3 per ledge) who seem to be lying in wait. They seem to be both alive and awake and trying not to be noticed.

The three kobolds on the ledge near Arden seem thoroughly cowed while the other three only look slightly uncertain as they glance between Tiger's juggling and each other. At that moment a voice from behind you yells in Draconic.

At the same time, two more kobolds on the third ledge jump up and throw stones, one managing to hit Tiger on the back of the head. 2 damage

Aki nimbly jumps over the chasm, but unfortunately, her arrow merely bounces off the rocks near her foe. Tiger throws and spear and Sharpe shoots at the two kobolds that managed to evade the party's detection, felling both of them.

The other kobolds, especially the ones intimidated by Arden seem a bit flustered, stumbling against each other and completely failing to throw rocks with anything resembling accuracy. One even manages to throw his sling rather than the rock it contained, giving Aki a nice little sling skull cap. The other three kobolds seem a bit more capable, managing to hit both Arden and Sir Florace with one rock each. 2 damage to Arden, 1 to Sir Florace

The cowed kobolds continue to be ineffective, although the kobold without a sling does manage to do a slightly amusing dance, clearly distraught at having lost his weapon and uncertain about what to do. One of his companions almost joins him, but manages to grab the sling just before providing Arden with his own had. The other two remaining kobolds seems very slightly more effective, one managing to hit Aki in the head while the other's rock bounces harmlessly off of Sir Florace's armor. 2 damage to Aki.

As Arden finishes off the wounded kobold, Sharpe blows the head off of the other. Upon seeing this, the already shaken remaining kobolds start to chitter even faster in obvious concern, though their speech doesn't seem to be any form of coherent language.
