Is there an indication of scale? There's a gauge in the upper left corner but no numbers. How big an island are we talking?

"Let's make landfall on the flatland between those mountains to the west and that lone peak to the east", Harmony points a finger roughly at the location marked C3 on the map. "It should be easier to find footing if we're not trying to climb a cliff face at the same time."

Harmony suggests rowing SouthWest from the Man's Promise.

"Artevious, you seem the nimblest. Would you mind taking point and being the first to hit the beach? Gall, if you don't mind me ordering you around? You're the biggest, do you mind taking care of pulling the boat onto the sand as much as you can? Cueta, prepare some rope to secure the boat? We don't want our sole means of transportation to float away if we forget the tides." She tries to be delicate and not bully people around, but who knows how her words will be received?

Gall lifts his brows and breaks into a broad grin as he looks over to Harmony in mock surprise. "Aye, aye, Cap'n Harmony. Be glad to, ma'am. Wouldn't want to catch me a flogging now, would I?"

From his tone, if not his expression, he is clearly just teasing. But he does nod after he has his fun. "'Course, lass, I'll see to it. Good thinkin', there."

Gall, being the only one steering, will head to the South West.

Harmony's suggestions were reasonable, since the strip of beach looked as good a place to make land as any. I nodded to her as I readied my cutlass. "Indeed! I shall make sure our landfall is unaccosted," I responded.

As we neared, I studied the coastline and the contours of the island. A small strip of land to be sure, but the Shackles were ever populated with these tiny islands. Obviously, they are ideal locations for hidden treasures, pirate hideouts, and other sources of adventure.

Of course, for myself and my crewmates, this island only represented one thing: the hope of finding our wayward companions, stolen by these strange greenish creatures during the storm.

"I say we start there, but if there seems to be no clue about the whereabouts of Sandara and Conchobar, we row around that eastern rock and try the far coastline. Outside of this one spot, the western ridge does not look promising."

Esmarelda couldn't help but elbow Gall in his side with his jest. "She's be a better captain then Plugg or Scourge. But then again I am sure any of us would be!" She laughed as she settled back into her seat. Her smile had returned and she seemed more relaxed since they left the ship.

"Is it too much to hope that they just washed up on this island and we'll find them before we even find the water?" Esmarelda asked as she looked out over the island.

As Gall rows, Cueta keeps her longbow drawn, eyes slowly crawling across the shoreline, looking for threats. The deckhand isn't sure if Harmony is joking or not. Cueta says simply, "They won't send any search parties."

It seemed that not speaking for a while let the question of her profession drop.

"Uh...I'd rather not be stuck on an island after being stuck on a boat. But who are the guys we're trying to fing again?"

I had to shake my head vigorously against Harmony's next suggestion about growing old on this strip of land. "My family's legacy and destiny is far greater than to simply retire on a tiny island before my adventure's begun! Besides, I'm not going to leave my mother's novels in the care of Plugg and Scourge!" I protested.

Turning to Rizz's query, I showed my concern for our crewmates on my face. "Why, two of our staunch allies. You've been brought aboard a ship divided, my dear Rizz. There is Plugg, Scourge, and their cronies. Then there is us: right-minded, stalwart and true. While the black-hearted likes of them wouldn't give a care that the unfeeling ocean has swept them away, we of course are not like that. We will see that our friends are rescued if a breath remains in our bodies."

Day 5 - Morning - Bonewrack Isle

As Gall rows the group towards the spot that Harmony has suggested, you see something i the water, many somethings. At first they appear to be statues soon enough, you are disavowed of that assumption.

All along the perimeter of the island, something has left small, twisted “statues” made of the sinew-twined, scrimshawcovered skeletons. These
statues lurk in the shallows of the sea and on the edges of lagoons, and hang from palm trees on the fringes of the jungle. No two are alike; each is the product of a twisted imagination. If these bodies surround the entire island, and they appear to, there must be hundreds of these bodies.

Heal Check DC 10:
The bones show signs of trauma and gnawing as you take a closer look while sailing by.

The Shepherds'.

Harmony's instincts were correct. From what Cueta can see, outside of this strip of beach, rocky cliffs or dense jungle would bar any sort of landing on the small isle. As you pull ashore, you see that the beach is home to a small gathering of collapsed mud huts. The village has not been inhabited for some time based on its disrepair A path leads away from shore into the nearby swamp toward the mire. You see no other paths available and would need weapons to cut through the thick jungle.

Cueta stares - hard - at the skeletons as the group rows past. "Don't go in the water. Maybe something there. Bones have got teeth marks on 'em. Or those green fookers ate these people and then turned them into artwork."

Jumping out of the boat, Cueta ties it and then longbow drawn, begins searching the village, looking for any clues as to what happened to the inhabitants.

Esmarelda listened to what Cueta said and gladly avoided the water. "You don't need to tell me twice." She told her.

When Cueta tied the boat up, Esmarelda quickly jumped out and moved onto the shore. "Is it sad that I a a bit happy to be back on land?" She smiled as she looked around. Though the smile left when she noticed the town was completely empty. "What happened to everyone?" She questioned as she went to help look around.

I rubbed my jaw as we rowed past the grisly skeletons populating the waters on this strange isle. I considered; my father's adventures had always had a bit of nail-biting suspense in them, so I regarded these strange wardens of the surf warily. Thankfully, I did not have to re-enact that scene in The Eleventh Voyage of Poisson wherein he had to fight off a veritable army of bony foes.

I took command of the beach as Harmony bade, drawing my cutlass and staying alert as the others pulled the dinghy to shore. The eerie absence of the villagers in the huts around the beach had me more on edge.

"Well," I ventured, "Outside of us shoving off again and rowing around the northeastern cape, I think that we should try that simple path into the jungle. Paths have to lead somewhere, yes?"

Gall grimaces at the sight of the bones and tries to keep his eyes from lingering on the bite marks. That is a fate that he will be avoiding like the plague, if at all possible. "I'd put money on that Cueta's right. Let's keep our eyes open."

When they manage to reach the shore, he hops from their little ship and hooks an arm into the bow. He slogs his way through the shallows, setting their boat up on the beach far enough that the tide will not carry it away. Once there, he unslings his enormous sword from his back and follows Cueta into the village. "Aye, Arty, let's make for the forest after we check 'round here."

"A lot of cultures use skulls and skeletons as deterrents -- essentially 'do not enter' signs, albeit gruesome ones. But we have little choice. If the culture that does something like this has two of our crew, I'm not keen on leaving them to be the next two skeletons." As the group moves to land, Harmony follows, making sure that the boat is secured with something so it doesn't drift off with the tide.

"As for mutiny, that is never something to be engaged in lightly. It's considered one of the worst crimes on the high seas. Having said that, Plugg and Scourge, in my personal opinion, have done quite enough to warrant something like that. They clearly have little concern for the lives of their crew. In my opinion, they are two of the worst shipmasters I have ever had the misfortune to meet. Although there was this one guy in Ollo...I heard that he actually *ate* members of his crew when they failed to perform."

Day 5 - Morning - Bonewrack Isle - Abandoned Village

But for the noise your group makes, the occasional bird overhead and the sound of the waves gently lapping the shore, you hear no other sounds of life.

A check of the village shows that there has not been any signs of life here in some time, likely since before some of you were born. Perhaps the legacy of this village sits on the shores of the Isle warding others away from a similar gruesome fate...

With the jungle so thick about this clearing it is hard to see anything besides, trees, mountains of the sea at your back. While the path is not the only way to go it is the easiest way to go.

"The easiest way to go is often also the most watched one. If there is still anyone alive here, that path would certainly be a location to keep an eye on. I say we brave it, because for all we know, our missing crewmates' lives could depend on minutes or even seconds. But let's brave the path carefully. I suggest that Artevious and Gall take the front, me and Esmarelda in the middle, and Cueta and Rizz holding the rear. How does that sound?"

After an examination of the abandoned village and coming to the conclusion that it was truly empty and devoid of not only people, but clues as to their fates, we deemed it time to set out to explore the rest of the island. I saw no reason to disagree with Harmony's suggestion that Gall and myself take the lead as we explored the lone overgrown path heading deeper into the island.

Thusly, we set out, after a bit of discussion about the proper duties of whoever takes on the rear guard of our little expeditionary party. I drew my cutlass and kept it firmly in hand, as it was both handy to chop away at the various vines that snaked their way into our paths, as well as its usual purpose for which it was forged.

"Onward, Gall! Our comrades' lives are at stake! Let's be swift!" I exhorted as we pressed ahead, being mindful of possible threats lurking in the brush.

Day 5 - Morning - Bonewrack Isle - Mire Crossing

After a half mile trek through the path, a rarely traveled path based on the growth upon it, you find that the pathway slips suddenly into a large green bog.

Remnants of an old wooden bridge cross the bog, but only short timber platforms on either side remain, leaving just the pilings jutting from the mud.

The marsh is approximately some 70 feet across. This is the only place
to cross this stretch of the swamp, you can see that the divide is wider as you look east and west from this spot.

Survival Check DC 15:
The mire is composed of quicksand.

Perception Check DC 10:
The tree canopy overhanging the mire is thick. This May allow for crossing as well. Either by climbing or attaching a rope and swinging.

Knowledge Engineering DC 17:
You could also jump across the pilings sticking out of the mud as they are likely solid.

Our trek across the island was interrupted by an unpleasant quagmire. I sheathed my cutlass as I contemplated the obstacle; it was an unpleasant, soupy mess, dank and foul-smelling, and unfortunately the best place to cross to get to the other side of the island. Some enterprising souls had at one point built a bridge, but the bog had long ago claimed the boards and all that was left were a number of sad-looking posts in the swamp.

I was contemplating an unpleasant slog through the mire when my eyes drifted upwards. Aha! The canopy above us had just enough stout branches that could support our weight -- enabling us to climb or swing across. Then I suddenly realized I had no rope. On a ship, a length of rope was always an arm's reach away, but here in the swamp it was in far scarcer supply.

I was just about to ask about it when Gall posed that very same query, and then Rizz jumped forward and began clambering up into the branches.

My attention then turned to something else that Gall had said: the forlorn pilings of the wayward bridge could likely hold someone up if he were nimble enough.

Indeed, as the others pointed out how dangerous the sands were, I knew where my abilities lay. "Right then, lads and lasses! You take the high road across this mire, and I'll meet you on the other side!"

With that, I took a bounding leap across the swampy morass and nimbly hopped from piling to piling.

Cueta holds her hand out. "We may need that rope to pull Arty out of the sand if he tumbles in..."

If Arty makes it across without going in the mire...

Grabbing a tree trunk, the deckhand shimmies up and starts heading across the treeline.

Taking 10 on a climb check once Arty is across. Casting Guidance. Total 17

Rizz can't really talk with a rope in her mouth, but (assuming successful climb) secures one end to the tree up high. She leaves enough length to bridge the gap or, in Cueta's prediction, toss in to save a fallen comrade.

"As much as I believe I could use the posts... I don't want to risk falling into that. I'm going to use the robe." Esmarelda said with a small laugh before she walked over and waited for her turn to climb.

If we're allowed to take 10, then Es gets a 16!

"Are we sure that branch is going to hold all of us?" She asked before climbing. "I mean, Gall is rather big." She said before looking back to Gall. "And I am not trying to insult you...." She muttered.

Day 5 - Morning - Bonewrack Isle - Mire Crossing

Harmony heads across the tree line first and is able to make it safely to the other side without incident.

Cueta holds herself and the others up while Arty crosses.

Arty begins his graceful hop across the other side, landing like frogs on lilly pads. His grace quite simply nothing short of breathtaking. Unfortunately they are not his only admirers as two giant frog tongues lash out at his from the mire!

DMP ONLY:
Tongue Lash #1 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19. Tongue Lash #2 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

While the second one misses, the first manages to latch onto Arty's ankle stopping his forward momentum! He uses the elasticity of the tongue to land back on the last piling he leapt from rather than falling directly into the mire!

"I got it!"

Despite her best intentions, Rizz is currently all the way up in a tree.

Rizz only has a movement speed of 20 ft, so she'll take a full run action if posssible to go down the tree and move 60 ft to Arty diving headfirst into the gorge with the other end of the rope.

It should have occurred to me that there would be some sort of deadly threat lurking about in the muck, but I was more concerned about the mire itself. Thus, I was moderately surprised when two sets of blinking eyes rose from the swamp, belonging to a pair of oversized frogs. They lashed out at me with their tongues, lengthy things with sticky ends. The first one caught me, but thankfully the second missed or I would be the proverbial wishbone in a wishing game between the two amphibians! As it was, one was bad enough as it began reeling me in towards it. I hopped to the last pylon to avoid the muck, but I had nowhere else to go.

I tugged back hard on the tongue to reclaim my leg from the frog, seeking to get free and get off these pylons.

"Fook me!" Cueta curses under her breath, as the frogs pop out of the mire and lash out at Artevious. Bracing herself against a tree trunk, Cueta draws an arrow and watches the frog closest to her for a moment, sizing up how the creature moves, before she lets loose an arrow at the beast.

Not sure if Cueta will need an acrobatics check to stay in the tree. I've rolled one below if needed. Move action: studied target on the closest frog. Standard action: attack!

"Artevious!" Esmarelda cried out when the frog's tongue reached out and wrapped around the swashbuckler.

I'd be no good in the marsh water... but I do have something that might help.

Arcane words began to leave the varisian woman's lips as she out stretched her hand, when she finished two bolts of force flew from her fingers and slammed into the large frog holding her swashbuckler. "Drop him you slimy creature!" She shouted.

Arty manages to hang on but cannot pull away from the frog's tongue that holds him fast.

As he draws his cutlass his allies start attacking the foe that vexes him. A sheaf arrow and two missiles of pure force strike creature but it stubbornly holds onto its meal!

From the treeline, Rizz swings down and lands on the pylon next to Arty.

The Giant Frogs respond.

Gall scowls darkly at the sight of the frogs and plunks himself down on the thickest branch within reach. Snatching up his (always pre-combat loaded) sling, he gives it a twirl before letting the bullet fly! His target, for the moment, is the beast that has a hold on Artevious. As the battle commences, he tries to wrack his brain for what he knows of giant frogs.

Harmony isn't really certain what to do -- try to make her way back, use some kind of spell (but what does she even have that would be useful), throw something or what? After a second of rapid deliberation, she decides to start making her way back toward the scene of combat. "Hang on, I'll try to get there!" she shouts and tries to climb her way back toward the battle.

Climb: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Alas, not much luck. Does she just not get started, or worse, falls into the mire?

It seems anything that exits Gall's hand is a lethal weapon as the bullet strikes the frog with a direct hit. It topples over, the grip on Art's ankle going slack! '

"Arty! Get out of there!" Esmarelda cried out before she turn her attention to the other frog.

I don't think I have any more spells that can work at this distance...

Figuring that out Esmarelda work her way down to from the tree to get to the ground, and hopefully within range of the second frog.

Arty? Who's Arty? I looked around in puzzlement. I noticed Rizz appear from seemingly nowhere to land nimbly upon a nearby post, but other than that, there was no one else.

Thankfully, Gall's aim was true and his stone dropped the frog that had lassoed me. Unfortunately, the second frog managed to latch its tongue upon the gnome. Seeing as how she was so interested in jumping down and joining the fray, I thought I would now lend her a hand.

"Come on, then! We won't let this errant amphibian drop you into the muck!" I jumped from pylon to pylon to come up along side Rizz and slashed at the tongue with my cutlass to dissuade it from pulling her in.

"I'm gonna live forever!!!!" Rizz shrieks as she flies into a rage. Well, it was more of a gleeful fury, a big smile plastered across her face as her hands, with the grip strength bear traps, clutches her Greatsword.

She makes her way to the amphibian and proceeds to see how many times she can slice him.
