ROUND 11

From the Wormwood a round of crossbow bolts fires laying low your immediate threats on the merchant ship, the Man's Promise.

It appears the tide is turning in your favor as the Rahadoumi crew begin to surrender en masse. As you turn you see Captain Harrigan appear from below deck gripping what appears to be a human heart and chucking loudly waving it around to intimidate the remaining crew.

I cannot see the map and assume you are all located at B5. FYI, maps are not my thing, I will place a map up and describe where you are located for battle scenes moving forward.

Perception DC 18:
You notice that not everyone is surrendering, what appears to be a senior officer and two sailors exit from below at the foredeck.

"Aye, looks that way, lass," Gall calls over to Harmony as he casts a glance around the ship's deck. He lets his sword drop to the deck with a thunk and moves to lean his hip against one of the jollyboats. "Hardly worth callin' it a proper fight, isn't it?"

As the fight seemed to be winding down, Captain Harrigan appeared through the fog of war wielding a grisly trophy. Suddenly I remembered my impressions of Harrigan as a villainous character straight from the pages of my mother's novels, and there he was, in the flesh.

I swallowed, and looked about at the carnage we had wrought. A victory, indeed, but the fact that it was also Harrigan's left a rather sour taste in my mouth.

Cueta, from her place on the Wormwood, knocks another arrow and waits. And waits. Seconds crawl by, no new enemies appear, the battle seeming to be over. Sighing, the deckhand resigns herself to coughing up some three gold to Artevious. Not making the deckhand's mood any better, she spies Harrigan prancing around with a heart in his hand. Bastard survived.

Just as she's about to turn and head belowdecks, the Besmaran spies an officer and two sailors leaving from below at the foredeck. Drawing her bowstring back, she lets an arrow fly at the officer.

"Oi! Three of 'em making a run for it. Foredeck!"

In her excitement, Cueta misjudges the wind, and watches the arrow thunk solidly into the ship's hull, twenty feet away.

"Blast and avast!"

Cueta spots the Officer with two crew flanking him at the foredeck trying to escape perhaps into the water.

She fires at shot at them which misses wide. The rest of the crew of the Wormwood do not see them or are busy disarming those who have surrendered, it is up to you to reach them!

Harmony was the furthest away from the battle to start with, as she had remained aboard the Wormwood, casting her spells from the pirates' ship. As such, it takes her time to work her way on board the Man's Promise, balancing on one of the boarding planks and almost falling in the water. Finally, however, she arrives on the other ship, but it took her long enough that she has no time to act further.

Artevious and Gall charge at the sailors who are backing up the stairs heir own short swords in hand to ward off your attacks. Gall's foe manages to deflect the powerful half-giant's strike into the stars so that it chews up wood and not flesh. Artevious' foe is not so fortunate, his cutlass is too fast for the sailor to parry and his lie ends in a bloody spurt his body tumbling down the stairs.

Cueta takes am at the Officer and her shot is true! It sinks into the thigh of the man who grunts in pain.

Harmony makes it to the ship and close enough to the action that she is close but not too close to the heavy melee taking place before her. You and Esmerelda are ow at the foot of the stairs on the ship get an action round 2.

The sailor though overmatched against the half-giant grimly swings his shortsword at Gall's no exposed flank.

The Officer steps forward and attacks Artevious pike and blade working in concert with one another, "I may not live but I'll take at least one of you with me!"

Opportune Parry and Riposte:
(Ex): At 1st level, when an opponent makes a melee attack against the swashbuckler, she can spend 1 panache point and expend a use of an attack of opportunity to attempt to parry that attack. The swashbuckler makes an attack roll as if she were making an attack of opportunity; for each size category the attacking creature is larger than the swashbuckler, the swashbuckler takes a –2 penalty on this roll. If her result is greater than the attacking creature's result, the creature's attack automatically misses. The swashbuckler must declare the use of this ability after the creature's attack is announced, but before its attack roll is made. Upon performing a successful parry and if she has at least 1 panache point, the swashbuckler can as an immediate action make an attack against the creature whose attack she parried, provided that creature is within her reach.

Artevious manages to deflect the worst blow and delivers a vicious slice in return severely wounding the Captain.

You still take 4 damage and tumble down the steps as his second hit was a borderline critical.

The flank Gall expected does not materialize and the Sailor manages to side step the half-giant's massive weapon which once again splinters the stairs with its force.

The Officer turns his gaze to the half-giant but that gaze almost immediately becomes glassy as Cueta's arrow pierces the man's ear. He tumbles down in slow motion pinning the Sailor into a box.

A beautiful box of death as Esmarelda and Harmony converge on his location. Esmarelda though aiming for the Officer manages to change trajectory to aim for the sailor. Both women strike with the precision of battle hardened warriors and both deal to the man a death blow! Which dealt the blow first is unclear an likely always will be.

Soon the fog dissipates and the outcome is not in doubt, the crew slaughtered the merchant ship, no doubt the men (and women) will celebrate tonight as hard as they fought today.

Combat Over!

He turns to look across to Cueta on the other ship with a mixture of amazement and jealousy.

Although faced with a certain level of consternation over the fact that a black-hearted villain like Harrigan was also celebrating the victory, I picked myself up off the deck knowing I had acquitted myself in the battle admirably. The ladies managed to avenge that last blow of the officer that sent me tumbling -- I had deftly avoided the pike, but his follow-up with his short sword jabbed me but good.

I graciously accepted the Varisian lass's praise, bowing my head. "I don't see why not; though it does require some fancy footwork and a bit of panache. It's a bit like dancing, now that I think of it -- though with quite the aggressive partner. I can certainly say practicing with you would be a much more pleasurable experience." Then I recalled her impressive trick of sending her magic through her blade. "Though I daresay you have an impressive trick or two of your own," I added with a wink.

I turned to the rest of my comrades-in-arms to share in our victory. "Well done, all of you! We may have had a few setbacks in our path to piracy, but this day's victory shall only be the first of many! Huzzah!"

Captain Harrigan calls out, "Ye scurvy sea dogs. This is a great victory! I seen all of ye', e'en our newest crew members, contribute to tha' effort! Let's break out this ship's finest food and drink and celebrate! But no lootin'! Me, Plugg 'n Scourge'll be decidin' who'll be gettin' what!"

The crew throws up a cheer. All grab for food, some grab for wine while others grab for the female crew members of the now captured merchant ship.

This will be a rager to be sure and will last deep into the next day. You can take up to 5 ship actions between now and the end of the celebration or do nothing but drink and be merry.

I will need a bit of assistance from the players. Can you each total how many kills you made during that massive combat? Can you also let me know if you accidentally slew any fellow crewmen (pirates)? Finally who, if anyone, warned the Captain about an attack he was about to receive early in the combat?

Moreover if you are not level 2 by now you should level up.

Gall only grins wider as he makes his way back to Cueta's side, clapping her on the shoulder just a bit more roughly than he means to. "Aye, so ye did! Good shootin', lass. And speak for yerself. Rather have ye watchin' me back than worry 'bout gettin' an arrow betwixt me eyes any day."

At Harrigan's shout, Gall lets out a similar cheer and makes for the nearest flagon that he can see. "Aye, now we be proper brothers 'n sisters in blood, gents! Bring on the feast! Especially if it is one I ain't gotta cook."

Looking like Gall only killed 3, but injured another one. And it was Artevious who warned the captain.

Artevious did indeed the warn the captain. Had Cueta noticed him, she would have said exactly nothing. Cueta's just going to drink and be merry.

"Cook? That's what the newfish are for, m'thinks!" Plucking the string of her bow as if it were an instrument, Cueta smiles. "Got three of the enemy bastards! One was an officer!"

Today was the first damn good day since she'd been pressganged, Cueta reckoned. Besmara was pleased, that she could tell for sure - the whispers cooed softly at the back of Cueta's brain.

I think I only got one... maybe two... I can't remember! >.< And yes Artevious wanted the Captain.

"I'm just glad we all lived! That was bloody crazy!" Esmarelda said, though a smile played upon her face. "But I digress! Let us eat, drink, be merry, and find some one to fall down with!" She laughed as she wrapped her arm around Artevious' arm. "Speaking of the last part, want to help me out there handsome?"

Harmony spent most of the combat back on the Wormwood, casting mind control spells from cover, but sadly pretty much all of her spells failed to have much effect. It wasn't until the last moments of the combat that she finally made it onto the Man's Promise and her luck turned, allowing her to strike a massive blow against one of the fleeing sailors together with Esmarelda.

Killed one. Or not. No one will ever know. That was the totality of Harmony's contribution to the combat. To my knowledge she did not injure any fellow crewmen in any way. She did *not* warn Harrigan.

Harmony seems somewhat somber and sedate in the aftermath of the battle. The usually silver tongued woman sequesters herself from the proceedings, finding herself at the quietest railing on board the Wormwood, looking out into the vast blue distance. Killing innocents does not sit well with me. We should have killed those monsters -- Scourge, Plugg, Maheem, Harrigan and the rest. Trying would have meant getting killed. But perhaps that would have been a better moral choice. Now I need to carry with me the thought that I may have deprived a child of a parent. She frowns a little, shaking her head. Not the first time. Probably not the last time. For now, eyes on the goal, Harmony. Stay alive. All this death is not your fault, but the ones who forced you. And if the gods have any sense of justice, there will be a reckoning for them.

I think my count was six. I had some extremely good rolls. And yes, I did manage to give a shout to the captain.

I had been so wrapped up in the thrilling exploit of piracy that I had completely forgotten about the small wager we'd placed at the venture's outset. After running through the events in my mind, it did appear that I was the winner. With Cueta's gold sitting in my hands, I savored their weight until the captain spoke, announcing the revels.

I met his eyes briefly -- he apparently had taken notice of our collective prowess -- but I did nothing more than match his stare. I felt it appropriate that I work toward finding another ship on which to sail as soon as possible.

As the crew began to savor the victory in what manner suited them best, I spared one glance at the defeated crew before Esmarelda fell into my arms. Her words snapped my attention front and center, and I scooped her off the deck.

"What say we find out how comfortable the former captain's bunk is? Shall we?"

Esmarelda gave a playfully laugh as she wrapped her arms around Artevious' neck when he picked her up off the deck. "I don't think we'll be allowed in the former captain's quarters. May just be better off finding a quiet place." She told him with a bright smile as she leaned her head against his should.

Awww, young love.

Artevious and Esmarelda find a pace away from the drinking and the Gods knows what else where they spend private time together doing only they know what, unless the Gods are voyeurs!

Gall and Cueta celebrate a hard fought victory by drinking with the crew. Some officers spend their time rounding up the prisoners before they partake in the festivities.

Harmony finds some solace, alone, in the silence aboard the Wormwood where few stay to celebrate as most have boarder the Man's Promise where food, alcohol, and women are present.

While the crew seems to relax there is still an edge to the officers of the Wormwood that even hard drinking cannot offset, as if they know this is a dangerous time for them, a time when perhaps press ganged crew or even full fledged junior crew members may seek to even scores, as a result only the most junior of the crew men get completely s#!~ faced.

Of Scourge, Plugg, Maheem, Harrigan there is, blessedly, no sign no doubt they are counting coin below decks ad likely torturing the prisoners if their treatment of the crew is any indication of their sadistic natures you dread to consider how they treat prisoners!

At dawn, a few hours after the celebration finally winds down, the ship’s bell sounds, calling all hands on deck. When the crew is assembled, a long line of captured officers and sailors from the Man’s Promise is brought on deck and paraded before the crew.

Captain Harrigan addresses the captives first, offering a place on the
Wormwood’s crew for any who want to throw their lot in with pirates. Several of the Rahadoumi sailors step forward; Master Scourge cuts their bonds, and the sailors take their places among the Wormwood’s crew. Harrigan then turns to address the Wormwood’s crew.

“All right, you scurvy tars! You’ve done a right good job by me—we’ve got a second ship now, and she’s quite a prize from the looks of her. But I still have only one crew. So here’s the plan—the Wormwood will sail on to our planned destination with our new shipmates here, while Mr. Plugg will pick a skeleton crew to sail the Man’s Promise to Port Peril, where she’ll be worth a pretty penny as salvage.

As for these fine fellows here”—Harrigan gestures at the remainder of the captured ship’s crew—“some of them will no doubt be worth a hefty ransom from their families back in Azir. And for the rest, if the life of a pirate’s not for them, they can spend the rest of their lives at sea!”

To make his point, Harrigan grabs one of the Rahadoumi sailors and throws her overboard to the accompaniment of cheers and laughter from the Wormwood’s crew. As the unfortunate woman sinks beneath the waves, many of the remaining sailors scramble to swear their loyalty to Harrigan. The officers are led belowdecks and the crew begins to disperse to their daily tasks.

Captain Harrigan then approaches each of you in turn calling you below decks privately...

"My dear, piracy is all about doing what's not allowed." I gave the lovely lady my best roguish smile as I carried her belowdecks of the Man's Promise to find a place that afforded a bit of privacy.

And... fade to black! While his father's novels are quite ribald, Artevious's tales are purely PG!

It was many, many hours later that I finally returned topside to hear the captain's pronouncement. I was quite surprised that he was splitting up the ships, and placing Plugg in command of the newest acquisition. Good riddance, I thought, glad that the harsh taskmaster would finally be off the Wormwood.

Harrigan's villainy was again on display as he filled out his ranks with the remaining crew of the Man's Promise. While I can certainly understand wanting to afford anyone who wished to take on a life of piracy the chance, a choice between life and death is quite simply no choice at all. I could only shake my head quietly and wonder where Captain Harrigan was taking us.

I was therefore rather jaded when I was told to go meet the captain for the disbursement of my share of the spoils. I had a rather lengthy list of grievances: my being pressganged rather than made a willing part of the crew being first amongst them. But when I stepped in front of him and the piles of gold coins upon his desk, my breath caught. That was quite the haul of riches.

He tossed me a sack of coins as my share of the loot, and then passed me two additional items. Apparently he had not forgotten the shout I gave him when I had noticed an enemy sailor sneaking up from behind. In gratitude for sparing him what would have been at the very least a nasty wound, he gave me an enchanted sword and an amulet that would offer protection from harm.

Apparently the fiend had a sense of gratitude after all! I accepted the items with aplomb, but refrained from idle conversation. Instead, I excused myself and returned topside to get a look at my rewards in the sunlight. I pulled the amulet over my head and noted a slight tingle as the magics activated around me. The sword was different than what I was used to -- short and more useful for jabbing and thrusting than for the graceful slashes that my trusty cutlass excelled at.

Returning to the cluster of comrades that had been pressganged along with me, I showed them the sword. "I do believe my gallant acts of piracy has netted me quite the boon, but this is not quite my style. Could any of you make better use of this?"

Gall drinks and drinks and drinks until his memory of the previous afternoon and evening is practically nonexistent. Not that he stops when he blacks out, of course. He is a fairly large man and as a sailor, his tolerance for alcohol is equally massive. That said, when he awakes the next morning sporting a brutal headache and a throat as dry as the Osirion desert, he is not surprised. Nor is he surprised if any of his fellow crewmates see fit to inform him of any of the bizarre and likely hysterical shenanigans he got up to.

As unwelcome as Harrigan's shouting is as he does his best to down as much fresh water as he can get his hands on, the gold is not. Very nearly doubling the sum that he has amassed on the ship thus far, he nods his thanks and quietly excuses himself. Better to find the others and see what they can make of all of it.

His brows raise in surprise at Artevious's haul and he lets out a low whistle. "Bloody hell, lad. Tempted as I am to take that shiny sword off yer hands, it's too wee for me hands, I think. I reckon Cueta or Esmeralda'd get more use outta it."

Esmarelda turned her head away when Harrigan made his display and speech. Though when he called them away she followed quietly, doing her best not to cause any trouble by catching the captain's eye with her own.

"Oh no, I'm better with my rapier then I would ever be with that thing. Cueta might like it however." Esmarelda says as she put her own gold away. Once all are done with Harrigan, she looked to her friends. "Guys... what is going to happen if we get split up? If Plugg only picks one or two of us..." She asked, a look of worry on her face.

Cueta rolls over and vomits, mostly an empty stomach at least, before turning back onto her back and throwing her arm over her pounding head. Sadly, the bastards she's trapped on this boat with won't let the swab sleep. Sighing, Cueta makes her way above decks and watches, stomach churning, as Harrigan pitches a captured sailor over the side of the Wormwood.

Bastard.

When she's called below decks, Cueta scoots to the ship's railing and retches over the side. Wiping her mouth, the deckhand clambers down, and tells herself she's in no danger - more than likely if Harrigan wanted her dead, it would be done in a very public manner.

Still, Cueta finds herself shaking as she stands before the man. They'd never really had a face-to-face conversation before, and the swab had intended to keep it that way, until she could make her escape.

So, it was with great surprise that when Cueta picked up the sack Harrigan dropped at her feet, it contained a great deal of gold - more wealth than the deckhand had ever held in her hands her entire life. Cueta immediately vowed to double it with games of hog lob and heave, and a broad, gap-toothed smile spread across her face.

"Fook yeah!"

---------------

Cueta waved her hand at Artevious' offer. "Nah keep it, you earned it. Sell it for some pretty coin when you get the chance."

Turning to Esmarelda, the swab shrugged. "If that's how it goes, that's how it goes. None of us are in the position to say "no" I reckon."

Esmarelda voiced a concern that I hadn't considered. What would happen if we were split up, with some of our number sent off with the likes of Plugg? I couldn't fathom that turn of events being likely, because of his general disdain for us.

"I wouldn't worry about that overmuch," I interjected. "Pluggs' actions have ably demonstrated a keen dislike for us, so I have little concern he would wish to saddle himself with any of our number."

I gave the group a reassuring grin, and nodded in Gall's direction. "And that is always a possibility. They pressganged us to begin with, so what's wrong with being a stowaway?"

Upon meeting with Harrigan, Harmony has to work really hard to restrain herself from saying something that would get her killed. She's mute and somber when being handed the blood money, and tries to pretend to be neutral about it all.

Bluff: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

Inside, she is however seething. She would like to throw the gold right in Harrigan's face, but exhibiting exemplary self control, she just nods to the captain and says, "Thank you" while hating herself. Stay alive, girl. Maybe you can use this money to compensate the sailors' families. If you don't get greedy and keep it for yourself. Is this the start of a slippery slope? It would be so easy to keep this all just to myself. A bigger pay than most people get in a year. She keeps the interaction with Harrigan to the minimum possible, answering any possible questions as shortly and neutrally as she can, and tries to be out of the situation and back on deck as soon as possible.

When she's out of Harrigan's, she makes a point out of trying to talk to the captured Rahadoumi, anyone who might be accessible to her. She tries to get them to talk about their fallen, especially the particular sailor that Harmony and Esmarelda jointly cut down mid-escape, and the woman that Harrigan so casually threw to the sharks. An inner guilt tears at Harmony, and perhaps she can assuage some of it by finding out about the deceased for whom she feels some level of responsibility for.

You are able to get some information form the former freemen now press ganged pirates. They seem light of heart ad a bit surprised if apprehensive at first to speak to one of the crew that caused them misery and any of their friends death. You are able to gather information about a number the dead that is until you see Plugg coming your way!
