He, he was going to burn these people. the wizard stammers in disbelief. What type of man would do such a thing? He turns to the 5 prisoners to see how hurt they are and to introduce himself and his companions.

I am Arcessentes. These are my traveling companions. names each while point you out. Thank that gods that we got here when we did. What has happened here?

Arc will also cast detect magic and assess the gear of the dead tieflings and surrendered emery for magic. Once prisoners are secure and we have heard the story of the Rift Wardens Arcessentes will reveal that his parents were members and ask these people if they knew either.

Eventually he will scan the entire room for magic, and after things are fully under control will begin to look over the books here.

"FUUUHHH-AAAAHHHHH! Not again! Stupid prisoners, what kind of wusses keep quitting the fight at the first sign of difficulty? If they don't like the odds, maybe they shouldn't play the hand." Lirrathan sulks once more over a fight going belly up, and now having to deal with a liability.

The crusader drops his shield and kicks the heavy mace over. He gets to his knees, hands held up, and bows his head.

The prisoners seem to be ok excepting a few scratches and bruises. They are sobbing once or twice but largely able to talk. "Thank you so much. That man...he was going to kill us and burn all this knowledge in some ploy to get in with some demons! Blackwing was destroyed by a horrific abomination—a man made of worms who used magic and enslaved demons to smash the structure down. The...creature...took several treasures from here before he left, but we don't know what specifically he took. That's when this...man, if you can call him that, and his two cronies came in here. They wanted to burn all the books and the last of the Riftwardens."

As Aravashnial is led in by Anevia, who leans on him as much as he on her, the librarians gasp. "Aravashnial...you're alive! Thank Saranrae...we thought all the Riftwardens dead after that horrible wormy creature came. Quednys was going to Defender's Heart...we don't know if he survived but the whole of the Riftwardens were here when this attack happened."

At this information Aravashnial cries out. "No...no. It can't be true...the whole of the Riftwardens."

The librarians continue, "There almost are no useful spellbooks left here. Except this one." A charred book is pulled out from underneath one of the bookshelves.

Spellbook worth 700 gp itself, there's a folded parchment with a spell and the book has about 6 legible spells to be read.

Arcessentes also finds about a dozen leathery gray strips.

Hehehehe..don't worry Lirrathan...there will be many a killing battle to come.

If no one has any manacles Sir Bastion can use, he will tie up the knight with rope (DC23 Escape Artist). He will check on the ropes every 10-15 minutes.

Getting out of ropes is a 1 minute activity, so a take 20 would be 20 minutes. Figure if I check regularly, that should prevent him from escaping.

And the Smite Evil stays on him until he dies or Sir Bastions daily allowance resets.

Sir Bastion looks at Mirel with shock and confusion on his face, as he tries to comprehend her statement.

"'He does not deserve to live?' According to the Riftwardens he came here after Blackwing was destroyed by a demon made of worms. He came with the intent of burning the remaining books and the remaining Riftwardens, according to them." Sir Bastion begins to explain.

"We have seen Kenabres destroyed and thrown into chaos, are we too to be thrown in to chaos and confusion or should we not be a small beacon of hope and light? Who are we to pass the judgment of death on a person based on their intent?"

"His plan was to draw the attention of a demon, by his own words as we heard as we approached. But there have been numerous times that this type of plan has been foiled in the past and the accused have been brought to account for their actions by the authorities. Some of those individuals have even been able to find redemption for their actions, either before their just death or in the life afterward. Why would we not follow the same course of action? If we begin killing because of what we know about this situation, how does that make us right? I am afraid the 'Witch Hunts' will just begin again."

Stepping behind the kneeling fallen knight, moving his hair off the back of the knight's neck and placing a hand on his shoulder he finishes, "Iomedae guide my hand and mind." Casting Guidance on myself
" I believe he has a spark of redemption within him, as he knows his plan and actions are folly. He has surrendered to us, but if he tries to deceive us, I will be the first to cut of his head from his body and let him rot where he falls." gripping the shoulder tightly.

The librarians look at each other and one of them asks Arcessentes, "Who were your parents? If it wasn't Aravashnial here, or Quednys Orlun, then I'm sorry...they wouldn't have survived."

The now bound man says, "My name is Chaleb. I was a cavalier in the Crusaders until the demon attack. There isn't any hope left, so despair was all I could turn to. Wouldn't it be better to be a servant of the Abyss than to be dead?"

Fortunately, he's not very wise Bastion :)

"You...you're right. I planned on burning the books. The librarians I would have let go as soon as those two weren't looking/" he nods towards the tieflings on the floor. "I...I just didn't want to die. I thought it would be better to attract the attention of a demon with some foul acts and serve."

No, my parents were both killed long ago. He gives the group their names. I only recently learned their secret; that they were members of your organization. I hoped to learn more about who they were and how they died. They believed enough in your group to give their lives. I would know more about the Riftwardens. Only trying to play his Riftwarden Orphan trait and was wondering if it made sense for Arc to join.

He continues to look through the spell books and other items try to identify them. Info?

When Chaleb speaks the wizard softens a little, wanting to believe he man. You were a Crusader? All is not yet lost. He says reassuringly. There is still resistance; a cause to fight for. Perhaps you are not beyond redemption.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 Does he believe the man?

Yep, I figured you were looking to play on your trait...but they wouldn't know you offhand.

The book contains the spells: alarm, dismissal, dispel magic, magic circle against chaos, resist energy, and versatile weapon. The folded piece of paper tucked into the book turns out to be a scroll of dimensional lock.

The librarian who was untied when you entered the building steps up to Arcessentes and is glad to offer any information on questions you have about the Riftwardens.

Arc:
The Librarium of the Broken Black Wing serves as the Riftwardens’ base of operations. The secretive order renovated the manor house to contain several small libraries suitable for arcane and divine research, a modest laboratory for alchemy, and a grand meeting hall. Rune engraved flagstones encircle the house, each rune outlined in flickering, blue-green flame. From their manor, the Riftwardens research the Worldwound’s effect on the surrounding land. The organization has sent its own agents into the Worldwound to gather firsthand research, but also pays crusaders to collect information for them. Though the identity of the Riftwarden leader in Kenabres remains unknown, the spokesperson for the organization is a popular figure in town. Beltran Ravenken is a friendly, gregarious man who remembers names and faces after a single meeting and always knows the latest bit of gossip. Beltran specializes in answering questions without giving any useful information away, and assuaging concerns about the Riftwardens while helping conceal the organization’s secretive activities. The Riftwardens have an understandable interest in sealing the Worldwound, but not out of any altruistic desire to save the world. Their more inscrutable beliefs on the importance of sealing planar rifts guide them, and if the chance to seal the Worldwound rose, the Riftwardens would take it no matter what the cost in lives.

You believe the man Chaleb in his story. Tears begin to stream from his eyes as you mention redemption. He hangs his head in shame. "Perhaps for my soul. But I must face judgement for my actions here. I'll go along with you quietly to whatever authority remains here. Most likely at the Heart."

OK! So you've formally redeemed this man. Throughout this campaign there will be folk you can redeem...and there are MANY opportunities. I will be keeping track and it may have some very favorable outcomes at certain times. Just bear in mind that while there will be many combats...there are many who can be redeemed even though they don't look like it.

The leathery gray strips are worms of some sort...unknown to the natural world.

"I knew it! My house would still be fine. Come! You're not quite done delivering me yet, and my vault is where I keep the gold I promised you."

The front gate is whole but deserted. A look of consternation crosses Horgus' face. "Captain! Your master is home. Open the gate!"

He taps his foot impatiently while nothing happens. You don't notice any movement inside the house. Horgus draws breath to yell when Anevia cautions him. "It may not be wise to draw attention to this area with loud voices." Horgus deflates a bit and nods. He curses under his breath and opens the gate. He leads in to his manor and opens the front doors. "Where are you worthless servants?!"

Inside his house is beautiful and tastefully decorated. Signs of rich living abound, but mainly in the readily apparent quality of the furnishings. There isn't a marble floor, nor any gold brocaded columns. Instead is worn but well cared for hardwood floor and simple plaster walls painted in colors that match. Various paintings of crusaders or heroic acts are hung in mahogany frames.

"Come this way so you can get your payment...you did well enough I suppose." He leads you down a set of stairs to a basement with a thick stone wall to the eastern end. He waves his hand over the door (which has no doorknob) and a swirl of magic flows around him. As the magical dust flows back into the door, the frame begins to glow and a door shaped hole is now in the wall. Inside the door is room that is furnished with a comfortable couch and bed, a privy, foodstuffs from floor to ceiling, and a well. Gwerm touches another wall where it glows around his hand and opens another door. Inside there you catch a glimpse of a void, but with gold and jewels and other valuable looking materials floating inside. He reaches in and pulls out a sack and tosses it over towards the group. "There. There's your thousand gold as promised. And...well...you did save my life once or twice. Here." He tosses another bag containing a further 1,000 gp.

"I plan on staying in here now. I am well and magically stocked with clean food and water. Some wine and ale as well but that's not magical. This vault is nigh impregnable unless you're me. I paid much for this. You are welcome to rest for the evening and night." He throws himself onto the couch then and reaches for some grapes on a small table.

You may stay here, it is very early evening and could conceivably make it to Defender's Heart or Anevia's house before full night fall. If you do decide to stay, then I would like to know if you plan on staying in the vault, on the 1st or 2nd floor. Also a lookout rotation. Either way, you're level 3 now (but you don't quite recharge your abilities until resting time.)

Sir Bastion is taken aback by the surplus of supplies and security of the rooms.

"Master Gwerm, it is fortunate that your preparedness for any type of catastrophe that could befall Kenabres, allowed such forward planning of a safehold such as this. Would you allow us to send any other survivors we may encounter here, to take refuge in your upper rooms, until we can find a suitable location for them?

Sir Bastion is fine with staying or continuing on to the next location, so will leave that decision to the others. He will also regain his Smite Evil ability.

Does anyone need to rest? Unless we want to completely explore the manor I would recommend we try to make it to our next destination before we rest.

Arcessentes is impressed and studies the magic of the place trying to understand it. You do seem safe. But will you not grow lonely? And if we come back to find you do we knock at the spot you entered? Will you hear it if we do? He considers the gold. And while you have paid us well, I wonder where we might spend the gold. I am grateful for your generosity but would you instead perhaps have a few magical bobbles that you are not using that we might find more useful, and more portable than coin?

Lirrathan scoffs at the new guy's naivete, "Good ol' Horgus here ain't gonna want to give up his house and security out of the goodness of his heart. You got to know how to bargain." He turns to Gwerm and tries to deal, "Look, I hate to do this, and probably agree with most of your opinions about most of this group, but I'll give you back half my share of the reward for our rescue of you, if you allow us to send people here for safety. I don't care about the people the way these guys do, but it will keep me from having to take care of a bunch of the noncombatants the rest of the soft-hearted saps keep dragging along. Besides, think of what the citizens will think of 'Lord Gwerm' if they think you were doing so out of the kindness of your heart. If you have any higher goals of positions of power within the city, here's how you get the folk on your side. It's all about making the people think what you want them to about you."

Bluff, if it can be used (as he doesn't care about the people as much as he wants to stop having them along) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Otherwise, it's just Diplomacy 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

Gwerm looks astoundedly for a moment at Lirrathan. He splutters for a second. "Now see here. There's only so much one man can take, even for the sake of anonymity. She should just ask her wife!" He points angrily at Anevia, who looks shocked, "Any refugees are welcomed here and as soon as I hear from whatever pieces are left of the Crusaders I will fund ferrying them to a place of safety. If the Heart is still standing I can send them through as well as food, WHICH I PLANNED! I contribute more to the Crusaders than any group of people in this damned city and I can only take so much from thieves trying to discredit me" he again points at Anevia who hangs her head in shame, "to crass fools like you who don't know A DAMNED THING ABOUT ME!!"

His jowls shake at the end of his tirade and he closes his eyes, rubbing his temple. "Master Bastion and Master Arcessentes. Yes, send any refugees you find here. I have means of communication that I will attempt tomorrow to see what kind of state the forces of Kenabres is in. I'll send a team of soldiers out to Jolin's house. Keep the money. I have more than I can use in ten lifetimes and you seem to be able to put down the damned demons so that makes you a worthy investment. I don't have much in the way of magical baubles excepting a pearl. Hold on." He heaves himself off the couch and touches another wall, a single brick sized section disappearing, and reaches in. He pulls out a pearl of moderate unremarkability. He hands it to Arcessentes. "I'm told wizards like these pearls."

Arc is +13 spellcraft to ID items, so he taps that.

Why, yes. Yes we do. My thanks Gwerm. I will put this to use fighting the demons. he says as he pockets the pear. And we will send refugees here as long as we know it is safe. Thank you for that as well. Perhaps we should more fully explore the grounds. I would hate to leave some threat here for you to later discover, after we are gone.

"Master Gwerm, thank you for your continued support of the Crusaders, and rest assured we will get word back to you of the status of the Heart, incase your methods are unrevealing. Your offer to send for young Jolin and her family, greatly relieves a heavy burden on my mind and heart, as I know they will find safety and comfort under watchful eyes of one of Kenabres, silent guardians. The child would do well knowing a mentor like yourself."

"I agree with Arcessentes, that it would be beneficial to search the grounds for any hidden dangers, with your permission of course, before we either stay the night or continue on."

Gwerm sits blankly for a moment, obviously never considering that the other parts of his mansion could be inhabited right now. He nods, "Of course...yes...make sure I'm safe. Yes, just rap thrice in rapid succession on the wall we came through to get to the vault. I will be able to verify it is you and let you back in."

Currently in the basement, you didn't see any other doors in this area. There's a ground floor and a second floor to the house. Please describe how you attempt to go through the place if you do.

Lets do a quick room by room search of the house. I'll maintain Detect Magic. Start here in the basement and work our way up. After the house we check the grounds once over and any outbuildings. Then we check back with Gwerm and make a call on spending the night or heading out, depending on how late it is and how many resources we end up spending in securing the place. He looks to the other for confirmation of his plan.

Going through the house, assuming Lirrathan does most of the searching, you find everything seems to be in order. Lirrathan notices a shape outside the window far down the road but its back was turned and you couldn't see what it looked like.

The night passes pretty uneventfully. A scream or two pierces the night in the distance but nothing sounds close.

In the morning, Gwerm is still to be found in the bed in his vault asleep.

Sir Bastion wakes before sunrise, equips his gear and goes outside to perform his daily obedience.

Kneeling, he hangs his silver holy symbol on his longsword, holds the weapon in front of him at arms length, as the morning sun rises behind it. You can hear his prayers for guidance and protection from the Inheritor, followed by his reaffirmation of his vows to Iomedae.

He spends 15 minutes in silent reflection of his past actions, followed by 15 minutes honning his sword on an old whetstone preparing himself for todays challenges and trials of faith.

He joins the rest with Gwerm, as they decide what course of action to take today.

One day I will get to play in a game that uses the Obedience Feats. Celestial Obedience, Deific Obedience, Demonic Obedience

"Are we ready to head to Lady Anevia's house or Defender's Heart now?" Sir Bastion asks after seeing Lord Gwerm is still safe.
