GM, I think protection from evil saves our bacon, here.
While under the effects of this spell, the target is immune to any new attempts to possess or exercise mental control over the target.

Lucius is right, for the duration of the spell. You basically get 2 saves. If you fail both then the effects are suppressed until the duration expires or the duration of the opposing spell expires.
As each of you brace yourselves, but note nothing happening, Maugla screams in rage. Nebbin's mighty earthbreaker crushes a ghoul and sound and reality seem to crash back as you spring into action...
Actions from the rest of you then the baddies.

Thom steps forward and sets his longspear. "TUROOK! FIRE!"
Step up and ready an attack against the first one to close.

Lucius casts glitterdust on the nabasu. I believe that leaves him with one second level spell left, plus a few mythic points that can be turned into 2nd-or-lower level spells via Wild Arcana.

Nabasu Will Save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 Not so lucky son of a ... :)
Lucius' spell summons forth a sparkling rain of hellish fragments which the demon starts to laugh at, when his smile fades and he shrieks "I'M BLIND?!?"
The ghouls move in to claw at any flesh available; Thom, Saoirse, and Nebbin each slaying a creature as it pushes in. Turook's arrow misses as he hastily steps back and three more of the ghouls come screaming in. The lead one raises its head, slavering jaws open wide...
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
It gnashes its teeth on nothing but air. The demon hovers in the air and starts to chant.

But its face screws up in consternation and it stops chanting.
Back to the group.
Thom. |
”I think we’re on a timer, here,” croaks Thom over the shrieks of dying demons, ”We need to cut through this rabble to put some pressure back on their leader.”
He pulls a wand from his bandolier, pointing it at the blind Nabasu and invoking its power. With the rushing sound of a great wind, a winged bastard sword materializes behind the creature and lashes out.
Draw and use Wand of Spiritual Weapon (duration 3 rds), having it appear in the square on the opposite side of the Nabasu from us.

on phone still so bear with me. Lucius, the nabasu is hovering 30 ft up so unfortunately no ghouls were caught.
Thom's massive free floating sword swipes at the demon but misses widely. Lucius' missiles crash into a ghoul and Turooks arrow misses while Nubbin finishes off the foul creature.
The nabasu rages and screams at the ghouls to scatter. He flies up another 50 feet in the air.

The power between Saoirse, Nebbin, and Turook bring down the last of the ghouls. Lucius' magical bolts slam into the demon, drawing a frustrated screech from it.
It starts to rise higher then stops. With a counterclockwise spin in midair, the creature vanishes with an inrushing sound.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16 Not enough to ID the spell, and can't use Knowledge(Arcana) because he didn't have detect magic running (requires concentration).
Lucius brandishes the wand cautiously, looking for the demon to reappear.
Keep a readied action to zap the demon if it reappears.
Nebbin Elsbet |
Nebbin, splattered with gore, breathes heavily as he looks around, before realizing how badly it smells and coughing a couple times.
"Are they all gone?" he asks. "Is everyone OK?"
Thom. |
Thom waits a few heartbeats for the creature to reappear, then he looks at the courtyard and undead bodies.
"Turook. Keep watch. Nebbin. I could use your help."
The half-orc begins piling the bodies, including the one from the other room, in the courtyard. Once they're piled, he goes about burning them.
Assuming the other guy doesn't reappear, anyway.

DM Pendin Fust |
The air is eerily quiet now, as the brief moment of battle has ended.
What you folks want to do now?!
Thom. |
Burn the bodies, as I mentioned. :)
I don't necessarily want to linger, but I'd prefer to make this place as worthless as possible now that there is a very real chance that they know we're here and moving in the direction we are.
Lucius Erasmian |
Lucius eyes the heavy hammer a moment, suddenly very aware of how...undignified he'd look trying to carry (or more likely, drag) it. "I'll make sure its here when you come back." he says, still warily watching the sky for the demon.
"We should not tarry. The demon's eyesight will soon be restored, and it knows we are here."
He'll cast detect magic and take a look around.
Thom. |
"Agreed. It'll take us some time to have some of the soldiers come up and haul that cache of healing potions away, anyway." He looks at the corpses littering the courtyard, "In that time, I'll get these burning."
"Turook!" he barks out, "you're the fastest. Can you go get some of the men back up here?"
Turook |
"Hmmm... I can, but they’d still take a while to reach us...”
I'm up for it, at DM discretion. But I see how it is – it's all “don't split the party, don't split the party”, then suddenly, “Turook, why don’t you run out there alone and get eaten?” Honestly... 8)
Saoirse Palelight |
Saoirse shudders as she catches her breath, sheathing Radiance after cleaning it. Saoirse takes one last look at the group of ghoul bodies and gives a shiver, clearing her mind with a shake, "We'll be staying near here for the night anyway, we'll deal with whatever the Worldwound decides to send our way. I'll head back with Turook, none of us should be alone out here."
Turook |
Turook shakes his head at the paladin’s offer. “Your concern is appreciated, but you could never keep up with me, unmounted. No offense, but you would only slow me down. I can likely outrun anything the demons would send at me.” At least, I hope so... I think it’s pretty good odds I can make it, but I dunno if getting NPC help is on the menu at all. Anyway, I was just being facetious, in my last post.
Nebbin Elsbet |
"I'm fast," Nebbin says. "I could go with you, but only if everyone here thinks they'll be OK."
I think I move at the same rate as Turook, actually. Also, could we just signal the guys with some torches or something? Truthfully, in PBP, I'd say if nothing happens, just advance us, GM since there's no point spending days trying to decide something that doesn't matter.
Turook |
How fast are we talking? Turrok can get his base speed up to 80, so 240 at a full run...
DM Pendin Fust |
Yep, I'll fast forward the scene to an important bit.
Turook gets back to the army fairly quickly, and as evening wears on to night, the healing cache is added to the army's stock. Hearts bolstered the mood in the camp is feeling joyous.
Nurah has been decidedly quiet as a prisoner and Aron is looking much better than he has in previous days. Sosiel's demeanor has also lightened in this harsh place, bringing a ray of hope to the whole ordeal.
In the morning, after packing the tents and supplies and getting moved on, about ten miles from the chapel you come up to the Ahari Gorge (according to Aron) and it looks strange. In the gorge you see a seething, filthy green vapor. Getting closer you can see that is actually a mass of dozens upon dozens of some sort of demonic vermin.
Nurah, tied to her mount, says "Vescavors! They are not hindered by armor...and weapons do not damage them!"
Sosiel shakes his head and says "It'll be nigh impossible to climb the walls of the gorge, it looks like they're 120 feet high! And riding through is no option, we'll be eaten alive."
Aron looks at Nurah sideways for a moment then at you, "I've dealt with smaller swarms of vescavors, what Nurah and Sosiel say are true. But I also know that having them present in this number...means there is a vescavor queen nearby. She must be deep in her spawning...somewhere underground from here. If she's killed...this river of vescavors will dissipate pretty quickly." He looks around and then points to the eastern wall, about 80 feet from the roiling mass of vermin, "There, I guarantee that hole leads to whatever underground labyrinth they've chewed out."
The hole itself, once you find that a small group can approach that close without the swarms starting to push towards, is dark but dropping a couple coins down you judge it to go about 40 feet down into a cavern.
Nebbin Elsbet |
"I can climb down pretty easily," Nebbin says. "Then I have some impact foam, which might make it safer for everyone else... It's like a magic foam that you spread on the ground and makes it like a cushion."
Turook |
Aren't you wearing armor? I thought your speed was 40 then, which is the same as Nebbin's. I can't get up to 80 without (a lot of) help...
I am wearing medium armor, but I can switch to chain, and get to 40, then Impossible Speed gives me 30 more, and 10 again with a surge. Then I can add 10 more with Longstrider, so actually 90.
Turook shudders at the thought of falling to the earth with nothing but that alchemical mass between him and certain death. “I have a grappling hook and rope, as well – but we’ll need a lot more rope to make it long enough. How far a fall can that foam negate?”
Thom. |
"Or we could just lower each other," Thom rasps, pulling out a massive coil of rope from his pack. "My armor will make it a really tough climb for me, and it takes a bit of work to get into and out of it."
He hikes a thumb back at the horses, "So we have a few of them lower us a few at a time."
Saoirse Palelight |
Saoirse reaches into her pack and pulls out her 50 ft. of rope and handing it over to Turook. "This should help. Hopefully we don't lose too much daylight to these vermin." Saoirse turns towards Nebbin, "Caves are your expertise Nebbin, lead us down safely." Giving Nebbin a confident smile.
Nebbin Elsbet |
Nebbin grins back at Saoirse's smile.
"OK!" he says, happily. "I guess ... just follow me where I go. But use the rope."
He begins making his way down after securing his massive hammer to his back.
If I can't just take 10 (for 26)...

DM Pendin Fust |
Suddenly I want to call Nebbin Fezzik...everyone strap on to Nebbin! P.S. Never knew about impact foam!!
Map updated. I placed Nebbin in the map and the rest of you in the upper left, assuming only Nebbin climbed down. You can reposition as needed.
Thom. |
Considering Thom has a -3 modifier to climb in his armor, it'd be great if he could be carried/lowerd down. So if Nebbin-Fezzik can handle that ... FANTASTIC!
If not, could someone lower him using their horse from up top? If not ...
Climb: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (6) - 3 = 3
Nebbin Elsbet |
Once he's at the bottom, Nebbin spreads the impact foam ... just in case.
Not sure if we're going by rounds here. If not, Nebbin will next pull out his hammer and give a distracted glance at each of the tunnels and then look up to see the others descend ... at least until Saoirse starts down, because that would be inappropriate for him to look at!
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Lucius Erasmian |
A knotted rope is climb DC 5 - Thom and Lucius should be able to climb down one while taking 10. If there's a wall within reach, that DC is 0. That's could be a problem in combat, but not if we just want to reach the bottom and get out again afterward.
Once Nebbin has secured the bottom of the rope, Lucius climbs down cautiously, stabilizing himself on strategically placed knots.
DM Pendin Fust |
No rounds yet.
Feel free to describe what you want to do. There's no rounds yet.
DM Pendin Fust |
Everyone manages to make it down the rope with nothing more than a scrape or a bruise.
Warm air fills this crystalline cavern, pulled through a vent in the ceiling twenty feet overhead. A continuous, high-pitched noise issues from the three tunnels ahead, a disconcerting drone melded with the discordant buzz of an angry crowd. The walls, floor, and ceiling of this cave glisten with moisture and are caked with a thick red resin resembling dried mucus, giving the chamber the disturbing illusion of being the interior of some great beast’s body.
Nebbin Elsbet |
"So which was should we go?" Nebbin asks, pointing to the three potential exits from the cavern.
He tentatively begins heading south straight down on the map, looking back at the others to see if he's going the right way.
