Kreig Ironhand |
Important Note: Kreig gets a +4 Dodge Bonus to AC vs. creatures of the Giant type. Also, how am I suppose to fight Groot?
Assuming no surprise in these shots...
Kreig witnesses the murderous death being dealt out by the terrible trolls and steps back, pulling a pair of arrows. He needs to make room for the others.
"Everyone to the front!" He shouts back the way they'd come. "We got trolls up here scratchin' their butts!"
The first arrow he sends downrange is a Smoke Arrow, his hope to create a distraction for one the trolls to prevent them from seeing Rikar clearly. His follow up shot is one of his regular arrows.

》Shot Two: 1d20 + 8 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 + 1 - 2 = 22...normal
》Damage: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 = 4
This arrow is actually a specially-shaped smokestick that can be fired from a bow.
Benefit: A smoke arrow trails smoke as it flies, and creates a 5-foot cube of smoke where it strikes. It otherwise functions like a normal arrow in terms of damage, range, and so on.
Information: This alchemically treated wooden stick instantly creates thick, opaque smoke when burned. The smoke fills a 10-foot cube (treat the effect as a fog cloud spell, except that a moderate or stronger wind dissipates the smoke in 1 round). The stick is consumed after 1 round, and the smoke dissipates naturally after 1 minute.
Rikar Sarakin |
"Ouch, dammit!" Rikar calls out to his companions, "Trolls! Little help up here!" He recovers his balance and thinks on what he knows of trolls, then swings his blade powerfully back and forth at the nearest one.

Latys |
Seeing her master attacked, Latys growls fiercely and joins him in ripping into the closest troll.

Bite damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

Claw damage: 1d3 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Trip attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
We kinda piled on the damage there, if the first troll has fallen, Latys can 5-foot step to apply any remaining attacks on the second one.
Josef Guardson |
Josef casts create pit at the intersection of T/U-36/37.
Both trolls need to make DC 16 reflex saves or fall 30 feet and take 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2) = 8 damage.
Therena |
Therena has several options available to her, so delays to see how things pan out with her allies.
Delay for now, but she will act before the trolls.
Misha Keroun |
Misha whispers to Therena with a friendly wink, "I am actually going to disappear now, so don't freak out."
She adds in Dwarven, knowing at least Josef and Kreig understand that--not to exclude everyone, but in hopes the giants cannot understand her in case they can hear her,
Misha then sprinkles some magical reagent all over herself while incanting the invisibility spell and fades from view. She then draws one of her magical swords while moving toward the giants.
Move to W34. Aiming to get behind them if I can next round---or if in an emergency, can heal Rikar, but assuming Therena might be planning to. She'll maneuver around Josef's pit as needed.
Bromen Spellbane |
Bromen nods at the tactical advantage of Misha's plan. Bit insane, that one.
Of course, not knowing where your allies are makes it a bit harder to plan your next steps...using the cat's height and his own weapon's reach to his advantage, Bromen step up to W33 and sends his chain flail flying upward into the closer troll's face with a vicious overhand swipe.
Attack, Overhand chop: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

Therena |
I'm just waiting to see if the trolls fall in the pit at this point before deciding her action.
Misha Keroun |
Bromen has already interpreted Misha's nature excellently! :) Also, of course he can understand Dwarven too, sorry forgot to list you.

Tactical Map Updated
Did not want to waste such good rolls by Rikar/Latys so I move Josef to the end of the initiative list, just before Therena. I am assuming you guys do not have a problem with that.
Troll in pit is laying prone, and at negative hit points, but is regenerating. Other troll is scratched and regenerating. He will probably just pick something up and throw it, so everyone (Therena twice) give me actions
Pit - 5 more rounds
Oh, and I forgot to update hp on my little sheet. Rikar is still hurt but not as bad as before I updated the numbers.
Therena |
Trolls count as humanoids, therefore Knowledge (Local). Does anybody have that that can shout out "Acid or Fire!"
Therena movs to W32 and channels 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9 points of healing for everybody except the two trolls (in the pit or out of range).
Misha Keroun |
Knowledge Local: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
In the interests of moving combat along -- trolls are usually common so the DC would be 15. I am going to presume with a result of 18 it's alright to know the Acid or Fire thing. DMPapa I hope that's okay and if not I guess we will adjust accordingly when you post.
Seeing the events unfold as they do, with one of the trolls dropping quite literally out of combat, the still-invisible Misha casts message and whispers, her voice magically sounding in everyone's ears as if she were close to them.
"Fire or acid to kill! I'm at standing guy's left."
While technically she is not YET at the standing troll's left, she then once completing the spell moves to the intended spot (R35).
Standard to cast, free to speak, move to move.
Kreig Ironhand |
Kreig chortles with good humor as the second troll descends into the pit trap. "I'd give my first cousin fer that trick!" He pulls another of his specialty arrows and targets the troll as it bats at the smoke cloud around its head.
Tanglefoot Arrow: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 9 + 1 = 16 ...Ranged Touch on the troll standing and (hopefully) blinded by the smoke arrow
-----------
This arrow is topped with a small bottle containing a small quantity of tanglefoot goo.
Benefit: You fire a tangleshot arrow as a ranged touch attack; the arrow deals no damage when it hits, but the target is splashed with the alchemical adhesive. The reduced amount of the glue means this arrow is less effective than an actual tanglefoot bag (DC 10 Reflex save, DC 12 Strength check to break, 10 points of slashing damage to cut through, DC 10 Concentration check).
Drawback: The weight of a tangleshot arrow reduces its range increment to half normal.
Bromen Spellbane |
Did not want to waste such good rolls by Rikar/Latys
no love for the dwarf's critical? Poor new guy.....
Enough o' this nonsense!
Bromen starts feeling frustration getting the better of him as the tight quarters are making it hard to get a clean shot at the creatures. Misha's shout causes him to mentally check the contents of his pouches and pack but he soon realizes he has nothing that can help finish the beast in the pit. Only thing left is t'knock the other one down! Stepping forward he swings his dorn again for another attempt.
Move Action: Move to T35 if its still available by the time Bromen is up, or any other available square for that matter!

Rikar moves forward, eyes alight with the knowledge that Misha is hidden and waiting to give the troll a pleasant surprise. "I'll put him down, then we can burn him at our leisure," he says as he skirts the edge of the pit and swings his great blade at the troll still standing.

Rikar knows Misha is around somewhere, invisible, and decides not to risk stumbling over her in the middle of the fight. Instead, he strikes at the troll with his greatsword.
Hope that's an okay way to handle it. I'd normally move into flanking position with Latys, but can't do that unless Misha moves and I'm aware of it.

Misha Keroun |
Rikar, you go after me, and Misha is about to decloak and indeed flank with you, as it were, so as needed you may want to amend that. I was waiting for Josef to post, as he's the one who's up, and then the round ends with Therena's excellently used acid splash), but since people are moving ahead...
Not sensing a need to cast any more spells yet, Misha draws her other sword and continues moving around the standing troll till she is standing behind it, flanking with Rikar.
Swinging Fiendfinder at the troll, she fades into view, with a mighty "A-ha!"

Rikar Sarakin |
Yeah, I had that thought too, Misha, but I'm expecting to be busy this weekend at a con and I didn't want to hold things up. We'll flank soon - if the troll doesn't die on us first.
Josef Guardson |
Josef moves closer and fires an arrow at the troll still up.
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19 to hit (cover + in melee; if able to Gertrude a clear shot add 4 to that). 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 damage.
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13 to confirm; 2d8 + 12 ⇒ (8, 4) + 12 = 24 additional damage if confirmed.
"I only have one fire spell prepared, use that acid catnip, Therena!"
Rikar Sarakin |
...use that acid catnip, Therena!"
Might want to be careful with that stuff, there's a mountain lion around.
DM Papa.DRB |
Well, the rugrat (2 year old granddaughter) is back with her mother and father last night, after being with us since Friday morning, including taking her to the Columbia County Fair yesterday. *Sigh* Slept almost 14 hours last night from exhaustion.
tccb;a+8;d+5: 3d20 ⇒ (9, 15, 4) = 282d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 111d8 ⇒ 2
The troll in the pit, stops regenerating and dies, while the troll still standing, takes a chunk out of Rikar, so the Ranger and his cat return the favor and the troll goes down bleeding badly, but it starts to regenerate. Misha makes sure the troll stays down, until Therena comes over and casts the regeneration stopping spell, and the troll stops regenerating and dies.

Ending Archeologist's luck
Misha wipes off her sword and starts examining the fallen troll she is standing near. Bromen Spellbane |
As the final creature falls Bromen sends his dorn slamming into its head with a wet thunk.
yet again, yer almost useless!
Frustrated that he is not pulling his own weight and embarrassed that he let it show so much, the dwarf reels in his weapon and heads back down the corridor to the intersection to act as rear guard. Better get yer head in the game.
And soon.
DM Papa.DRB |
While Misha and Kreig search the area, they find 736 gold pieces and a violet garnet (worth 320 gp) among the fire pits of their cave. Therena pulls out a wand and heals up Rikar.
Josef and Bromen stand at the intersection, when a pretty young dwarf comes walking down from the north and address Bromen, "you killed my lovers, but I have their hearts. I'll have you soon." and before either of you can react she casts a spell and you are surrounded by a cloud of fog, and even with darkvision cannot see even next to you.

Rikar Sarakin |
"What in the hells is this?" Rikar cries out. "Bromen, Josef, you there?"
Misha Keroun |
ETA NVM if anyone saw that long post -- I couldn't see the map at first and totally misunderstood Papa's post. So if I am looking at things correctly, only Bromen and Josef are in the magical darkness at the moment, yes? Or is it hitting Krieg too?
Hearing a new and apparently dwarven voice echo through the hall and seeing the others react to something odd, Misha goes toward Therena and Rikar to look around the corner and see the cloud of magical darkness.
She begins to whisper to everyone, using the magic of the message spell to be sure she's heard. "No, listen. Keep quiet if you can. While she might be able to see in dark like this, if our dwarves can't, she might not be able to either. We don't need her pinpointing anyone else's voices even if we want to try to use that to find the others. We can all communicate with this spell, just whisper. She might hear it, but she has to have awfully good ears. Josef, can you dispel your pit? That'll make it easier for us to move out. If anyone is stuck in the dark, move away from where you heard the woman's voice, back down the hall. At least the corridor was pretty clear. We should also try to get out of here--I'd rather not hang out blockaded into a room full of lava by a wall of darkness."
Josef Guardson |
Josef does just that, dispelling the pit and keeping his ears open for hints of movement.
1d20 ⇒ 12 Perception
Bromen Spellbane |
Bromen's emotions flash from the frustration of the battle to confusion over the she-dwarf's appearance to anger. She just got the drop on me and cast? Cast? At ME?!?
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14 arcane or divine casting?
That anger is about to get the best of him as he prepares to blindly charge forward in the direction he last saw her. His foot goes back preparing to spring when he hears Misha's whisper. The words are wise, the plan a good one, but his instincts scream against it. He wants nothing more than to confront their attacker head on, his ego bruised that he was so easily the victim of a spellcaster.
But perhaps a more tactical position would be better. He replays the last few moments in his mind......he had turned to face the dwarf as she appeared, Therena's voice came from his right.....that means the corridor he was guarding is behind him to the left. Hard to say ye were 'guardin' it if she snuck up on ye, aint it?
Gritting his teeth Bromen takes a few tentative steps backwards, then starts slowly walking to the left with outstretched hands.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30 trying to listen for sounds also
Double move this round, at half speed, ending up at X30 assuming he doesn't get turned around in the dark
Kreig Ironhand |
Kreig, familiar with Misha's communication spell, takes advantage of it. "Gotta be some doodahd magics, can Therena break it (dispel)?"
He moves back towards where he'd last seen the rest of the group in hopes of emerging from the blinding cloud. He knocks another arrow and readies a shot.
DM Papa.DRB |
Bromen moves slowly in what he hopes is southerly direction, and finally comes out of the fog.
Kreig, who was at the edge of the fog, steps north and moves behind Therena.
Neither Bromen, nor Therena know what spell was cast.
The pit that Josef created is dispelled and the dead troll now is at ground level.

Rikar Sarakin |
Rikar squats down by Latys and whispers, "Find the scent you don't know, girl. Where are they?"
When a creature detects a scent, the exact location of the source is not revealed—only its presence somewhere within range. The creature can take a move action to note the direction of the scent. When the creature is within 5 feet of the source, it pinpoints the source's location.
Misha Keroun |
Misha whispers, "Good call, Rikar. If Latys can find them with their scent, can we follow hand-in-hand to get back down the hall too? I don't like being stuck here."
Rikar Sarakin |
Rikar nods in response, then whispers, "Latys can likely find our foes in the fog, or find the way back through the cave. But I don't want to go wandering through the fog without knowing what's there and where they are."
Misha Keroun |
"I'd assume if Bromen or Josef were immediately attacked we'd hear something. So I think the priority is get clear and let the fog wear off. It wasn't there before, seems sensible to expect it would eventually go away if we've no means of dispelling it. Therena, do you think you could?"
Misha also asks via her message spell, "Bromen, Josef, can you confirm you're alright? You can answer this way." She saw Josef's pit disappear so she hoped that had been in reaction to her suggestion, but she'd heard no response from either of them and did not know if they were just standing there or had moved or were hurt in any way.
Josef Guardson |
"I'm okay. Just trying to listen and see if our nrw friend is going tondo more than talk."
Bromen Spellbane |
"Aye, made it back the way we came. No sign o' her here. I don't like not seein' what she's doin' back there. Can't be good fer us, whatever it is."
Bromen squints at the darkness, expecting something to jump out at him any second. "I can try t'signal Josef to get him through but that'll tip her off also. Any tricks in that magic bag of yers to get rid of this?"
More Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22 keep looking for trouble
Kreig Ironhand |
Kreig twitches his whiskers a bit, not comfortable with the situation. With his background, the dwarvish rogue is used to being the one observing from a hidden position. He gestures for Therena to move by alongside Misha and Josef, then nods to Brommen and Rikar to ready themselves in case their potential enemy bursts from the fog...but he signals them at the last minute to keep their weapons lowered.
"Listen up there, pixie..." Kreig calls out to their unseen newcomer. "Yeah, we're a group o' heartbreakers all on our selves..." He slips his bow down, holding the knocked arrow and the weapon in his left hand, at the same time he unhooks the catch on his reverse scabbard on his back to allow his short sword to slide into his hand. "Been killin' things from dog-humpin' gobbers ta ancient fishies...n e'rything in between."
"You aint gettin none o' these hearts...aint gettin' no lovin' neither." He glances to the others, nodding for their readiness then continues his conversation. "Why dontcha c'mon out all peaceful like, 'fore there's a misunderstandin' n' we come in there n' gut ya."

Therena |
Therena nods. "I know the spell and can certainly try, but dispelling magic is never a guarantee, and there's no reason to believe this fog won't disappear on its own. I prepared that spell as a means of removing controlling enchantments or other debilitating spells. She probably cast the spell as a way of escaping, since she hasn't come back to attack us yet."
Bromen Spellbane |
Bromen hears Krieg's taunts and cannot help but smile. Ye got a set o' granite ones, gotta give ye that. Very dwarven of ye. Even though ye use that sissy elf bow.
He is not sure exactly how far the rest of the group is from him but the voice sounds a ways off. Certainly not a short distance to be running in the dark anyway. But if that she dwarf follows Krieg's voice and finds them, that is exactly what he's going to have to do.
"Keep 'em talking, Misha. Gonna try working my way around."
Bromen puts his left hand on the wall and stares into the darkness. She-dwarf can't be that far away. He whispers a quick prayer to Torag for guidance when the time comes then steps forward, creeping along the wall as quickly and quietly as he can while still trying to focus his senses and keep Krieg's location firm in his mind.

Misha Keroun |
The bow Kreig has is specifically of dwarven make. :)
"Be careful, Bromen."
Then Misha gets an idea. "I've got an idea--I am just going to go about a yard or so." Hugging the wall, she steps into just where she is in the darkness and looks in the direction the dwarf woman's voice had come from. Casting detect magic and focusing, she tries to see if magic auras appear beyond the darkness. She realizes it may not work as the darkness itself is probably magical, but tries to look past it to see if there is anything magical beyond.
