As a fledgling Pathfinders, you walked out of the Kaer Maga Lodge Hall yesterday after talking with Venture-Captain Thorn about the upcoming mission, hoping to be chosen. This morning seven of you, who received summons last night, walk into a meeting room and take seats around a large table. On the table is a map (LINK) of Moru Country. At the side of the room on a small table are refreshments for all. Book shelves line the walls, and you can see many titles, especially the famed Pathfinder Chronicles series, and journals of Pathfinders, current and past. Venture-Captain Thorn is standing near the head of the table, and another man is seated next to him.

Greetings fellow Pathfinders. I have called you together because I came into possession of this journal that belonged to the now deceased Fiall Garnwynn. He was a member of the Society, and over the last ten years of his life became increasingly interested, almost to the point of obsession, in the Moru Country area, near the Hold of Belkzen. begins Thorn.

His ramblings about gods and dragons became especially troubled near the end of his almost century long life. Earlier in his journal he writes about getting to know the local Shoanti tribes in the area, and of a new tribe formed almost a score of years ago, that entered Mount Moru's upper levels. According to Fiall's journal, two years ago now, the tribe completely disappeared. He writes that they were probably originally from the clan that maintained the Dragon Stone and the Scared Stones.

Thorn pauses and gets a drink of water from the table, as he lets the information sink in, then continues, Fiall was a friend and many in the Society just believe that his journals are ramblings of a man finally gone mad. I do not believe this or I would not have called you together. They are not willing to send seasoned Pathfinders on what they call a fools mission. However, they have allowed me to use some Society resources to fund this mission.

He motions for the tall, lanky human, seated next to him to stand. This is Dale. He will be your guide upriver to Meadowvale. I trust him, and have trusted him with my life. He has been contracted to stay in Meadowvale and to act as courier for communications between you and the Society. He also will be the one, using your funds, to sell anything you find that Meadowvale does not have the resources to buy, or to purchase gear from Kaer Maga and bring it to Meadowvale if you should need anything that can not be obtained from Meadowvale.

Tomorrow, I will meet you at the northern docks in the city right after sunrise, and you will take a keelboat up the Yondabakari River, then thru the Mindspin Mountains to Meadowvale. This journey will take about 25 days total. The Society is covering your expenses on the trip upriver, but after that, you pay your own way. As usual for Society missions, keep journals of your mission and send them back with Dale on occasion. Any treasure that you find is yours to do with as you will, however the Society will want rights of first refusal on any books, journals, non magical scrolls or other items that will advance knowledge.

Any questions? he asks.

Misha arrives promptly and helps herself to a beverage before seating herself close to the venture-captain. A look of enthusiastic anticipation never leaves her face as he speaks.

When questions are asked for, she jumps into speaking as soon as she can. "Thank you, Captain, for inviting me to join what I am sure will be an amazing opportunity for discovery. Even in the worst case scenario, that Garnwynn had gone mad, there's still often an element of truth in madmen's tales, and I trust your instincts that there's something worth exploring--my own say the same thing!

"For those of you who don't know me, I am Misha Keroun the Explorer, and I will be happy to put my scholarship and experience to this cause. As chance favors the prepared mind, I would like to ask Dale," she pauses and nods to the guide, "what we should expect on the way--if the journey itself is nearly a month long, then that alone could prove dangerous or interesting... or," she stops to give a broad grin, "hopefully both."

Sezira takes a seat midway down the table. Quietly listening to the venture captain tell his tale, leaning forward as if to ensure not a word was missed. Looking around at the other summoned party members. A varied bunch.

quite an assortment we have here. With almost a month on a probably boring boat ride, I hope they make good company. Seven souls to investigate this mystery.

As the Venture Captain goes on she gets the feeling this will be a long mission and recalls the time she waited three years for a particular circumstance to appear before she could proceed with her mission.

no matter. This should definitely test myself. I feel as if I've been getting soft lately. Perhaps father saw this and knew I needed something to keep me on top of my game...

As Misha leapt to speak Sezira smiled, waiting for her own chance to ask questions.

"Venture Captain, please tell us more about meadowvale. Who shall we expect there? It's society? Order? Their class?" she asks patiently and respectfully.

Dale looks surprised at questions thrown his way. He rolls his eyes and you can almost hear him think 'oh great, they want adventure'. He looks to Thorn who simply smiles and nods. Dale stands, then speaking softly, replies:

The first ten days on the keelboat should be no problem, as Kaer Maga's influence extends at least that far up the Yondabakari River. The second ten days or so on river, we could sign of orcs or wild creatures along the river. That is why at night, we anchor in the middle of the river. It is the four day journey once we leave the river and travel on foot thru the Mindspin Mountains that will perhaps be dangerous. Being so close to the Hold of Belkzen (LINK) we might encounter orc raiding parties, or other creatures..

Thorn, remains standing, and replies:

Meadowvale, yes. It is different than most villages in Varisia. There are less than 1000 folks in the village itself. A mixed settlement, mainly human, but most other races are there in small numbers. From Fiall's journals, it is ruled by a Council of Elders, however he also makes mention of person simply called The River Rose, who seems to be somewhat of a spiritual leader of the community.

Fiall also mentions the Church of the Blessed Horn, that is perhaps an hour outside of town along the mountains edge. I believe that this is an aspect of Erastil.

Sitting next to Misha, dark haired dwarf shifted in his seat. He got up slowly, cleared his throat and addressed those present.

"Venture-Captain Thorn, fellow Pathfinders..." - he pauses slightly for a dramatic effect - "My name is Dain, of the Harladorn's, of the Blackmolder clan. It will be my great honor to escort you on this expedition. Let us hope we are able to survive the challenges the gods may put in front of us, and maybe even learn something along the way. Speaking of learning - Venture-Captain Thorn, you have mentioned Dragon Stone and the Scared Stones. Could you please tell us a bit more of those?"

Finished with his little speech, Dain does not return to the seat but rather remains standing leaning lightly on the shaft of a large dwarven war-hammer.

Rikar, a tall, shaven-headed Shoanti with a crimson hawk tattoo on his head and an air of the wilds about him, looks about at his fellow Pathfinders as they ask their questions, a slight smile crossing his face at Misha’s voluble enthusiasm. He studies the map as the initial rush of questions and answers rises and subsides, and then speaks in a deep, quiet voice, ”Venture-Captain, I have no concern about the first parts of this journey – I can keep myself well enough in the wildlands of this map, and help others that need it. And I've no objection to being sent on what others call a fool's mission - I've spent the past year on one of my own choosing. But some parts of this account do have the ring of madness about them.

Setting a calloused, sun-darkened hand on the map and pointing a finger at the mountain, Rikar goes on, ”Does Garnwynn's journal tell anything of how an entire tribe of my people "entered the mountain"? I've lived, hunted and fought in the mountains, but aside from sleeping in caves on the mountainside, I've never entered one - do you understand what he means? And will you give us his journal to take with us? It could prove a valuable source of information, if your friend was indeed sane."

Redona sits quietly, listening to the Venture-Captain as he talked. She's intrigued by the old man's ramblings thet captain was speaking of, and having spent several years reading other journals, she knew the old man who had written about the area probably knew what he was talking about. Much stranger things had happened, according to the Society.

Wow... everyone is so excited. she thinks as they introduce themselves. She grips her cup of water tightly, quite nervous with all of the unfamiliar faces in the room. Still, she will be spending a lot of time with them if she wanted to go, so she should try and start off on the right foot.

She stands up slowly, gripping her cup in a death grip. She hates when everyone stares at her, after all. "I...er... I'm Redona. I'm very pleased to be going on this journey with everyone." she tells them with a small bow. "Do... do you think that the orcs will be a problem?" she asks the guide, looking concerned. She has never liked violence. Not that she couldn't handle herself if it were necessary.

Thorn flips through the worn journal he is holding in his hand and finding the page he is looking for replies, reading from the manual.

The Dragon Stone is the sacred monument of the Dragon Stone Clan. It is ten feet tall and has a dragon effigy carved on it. It is also covered in poems and writings sacred to the clan, however it is written in the Old Morudhain script..

Looking up, Either Fiall could not translate it, or he choose not to. But in either case he does not include the poem in his journal.

Turning the pages again, Thorn continues:

The Sacred Stones are fourteen monuments, similar to the Dragon Stone. Morudhain legends state that the stones were put here by the gods as a sign that this was Morudhain territory. The Morudhains see these stones as their rightful blessings and inescapable curse. The stones are covered with mysterious marks and grass never grows near them. No Morudhain will approach them under pains of terrible curses from the spirits.

He then closes the journal.

Buggers, I did write Scared in the initial post. I had written sCaCred and instead of removing the 1st C, making it sacred, I removed the 2nd C making it scared. The correct writing is Sacred.

Fialls' journal states that there there is a road from Meadowvale to the mountain base, and that at one time there was a tunnel through the mountain. It caved in many years ago, and it is now impassable. There is now a rough trail winding eastward up the mountain that leads to a series of caves near the summit.

At the mention of giving you the journal, Thorns face undergoes a series of strange looks and he hesitantly says,

We..... I..... just came into possession of this journal less than a ten day ago. I have not even finished reading it, let alone have someone copy it. I must refuse your request to give it to you. However, I will allow one of you to stay at the lodge tonight and read as much of it as you can.

Dale remains seated this time, Orcs are always a problem, being so close to the Hold of Belkzen. However, only spending four days on the trail, and with a group this size, we should not have much trouble.

Misha purses her lips as Thorn's demeanor changes at the thought of giving up the journal. "Even if there's information in there that could save our lives? Or at least guide us to the very information we are trying to find?"

Misha sat back, considering. Her normally jocular demeanor fades slightly. "I understand you wouldn't want something so valuable to be lost, and certainly not of an old friend. But it is his work we are finishing, Captain. Are you sure you are offering the most reasonable solution?"

Thorn listens to Misha's question, and a range of emotions cross his face. He finally, seems to come to a decision, and thoughtfully responds,

No. I will let one of you read what you can tonight, and expedite the copying of the journal. Perhaps in two or three months time a copy would be available and brought to Meadowvale. That is the best that I can do.

She wasn't happy with not being able to take the journal with them, but she didn't question it much, even if the others did. She knew how obsessive the Society was for holding onto whatever documents they could find--it was largely after all why she signed up with them, so she might have a chance of accessing them.

Redona is sure the Venture-Captain is being truthful. She wanted to trust him, after all. When dinner is proposed she shifts awkwardly, quite uncomfortable at the idea, but still very much wanting to be on friendly terms with her new companions. "I'll go to dinner..." she says with a slight raise of her hand. I should go shopping for provisions before we go too... I'm not stocked up at all on food that's good for travel..., the cleric thinks to herself as Josef pipes up.

Narrator [Maps, handouts, pictures: Links in top of page spoiler]

Turning to Rikar,

I know well the Shoanti guest-bond Master Rikar and in the Shoanti dialect

Borris and Dain only:
Greetings to you from Thorn, friend of the Sklar-Quah. On my honor you will be my guest tonight.

then continuing in common,

Yes, two of you can browse the journal tonight. And all of you are welcome to stay or not as you wish.

Master Josef, yes, food and water will be supplied for your journey upriver, and when you leave the boat and travel via the trail to Meadowvale you will be provided with rations for the trail.

If you stay tonight, Dale and myself will lead you to the keelboat just after breaking fast in the morning. Mistress Sezira. We will see you there in the morning.

With all that said, he calls in one of the Lodge staff and instructs them to find rooms for the six of you staying the night and to provide dinner in this room for all that wish it. He and Dale then take their leave and exit the room.

The man that he called in asks that you stay here, and he will have food and drink brought to the room shortly, as he anticipated the need for this, and he leaves. Perhaps 15 minutes later, several folks show up with platters of meat and vegetables, as well as pitchers of both water, ale and wine and set it down on the side table after clearing out the earlier refreshments. I will station someone just outside the room. If you need anything, just let them know and it will be taken care of. Captain Thorn also told me that one or two of you will need to see him later this evening. Let me know and I will get him when necessary. He then leaves you to yourselves.

Yup, DC 10 or lower Knowledge checks can be made by anyone.
Yup, no "diplomacy / bluff / intimidate" on fellow characters except in very unusual circumstances.

Misha bristles slightly when Josef asks to read the book as well, having hoped to get the journal to herself. But she forces herself to relax. These are the people you've got to work with for the next month or two, you can't afford to be so possessive, or let your pride bruise so easily, she chides herself.

She forces a smile to Josef. "By all means, I think that's a good idea. We can also take it in shifts, to rest our eyes and make sure we find what we need to. Plus if there's anything obscure, multiple interpretations can help keep us from getting stuck."

Misha turns to Redona, seeing how uncomfortable she is. "Relax, sweetie, we're all Pathfinders here. Half of us might be full of hot air, but none of us burn or bite."

@DM - I assume you meant for Rikar and Borris to look at the Shoanti spoiler, rather than Dain - so I peeked, and will respond.

Shoanti:
"Friend of the Sklar-Quah, consider yourself also a friend of the Shriikiri-Quah, my people. You do me honor by providing me a roof and true words. I will strive to return that honor through my service to you."

Rikar then sits and, as the food and ale arrive, he helps himself to meat and ale, smiling and saying "If we eat this well on our mission, I will have little to complain about."

Raising a mug of ale and gesturing with it toward Borris, he says "Will you spar with me during our voyage, cousin? I have not travelled much by boat, but the little I have done left me bored and itching to move - some time with a weapon in hand and an opponent of Shoanti blood will make it go by faster."

I do not yet do honor to the ancient form of Thunder and Fang but would love the opportunity to show you what I already can. It is the main reason I offered my hammer I would like to master it and I feel I’m pretty close. But only if you tell me more about the tribes! I am wondering if more of my grandfather's tribe escaped maybe even find the ruins the giants left of his village. Truth is told we could very well be cousins in bloodline.

I think this was meant for Rikar and Borris, as the Shoanti speakers, and the DM wrote Dain by mistake. It was a reference to Rikar talking about the Shoanti guest-bond, not an invitation to meet him.

as everyone eats their food, Redona nibbles at her own, listening to everyone and drawing very little attention to herself. It is fun listening to everyone conversing. And she was learning a little about each of them. Apparently people were going to spar while sailing. Maybe she should offer to practice with them too on the journey. She feels a bit rusty since she spends all her time in rather safe places. Was she the only one who'd never actually had a real fight? Sure, she'd helped people who had been, and she rather enjoyed that, but she'd never had to use her spear in any way other than to spar.

Nervously, she goes over to Misha when the opportunity presents itself. "Do... do you need me to do anything tonight?" she asks her, slightly red like she always is when addressing someone she hasn't had time to get comfortable with yet. She considers as she asks that she should really work on that, since she wants to actually get out in the world and help people.

Walking out in the evening, she pulled her hood over her face, disguising her elven features easily in the receding light. Walking quickly towards her destination, not stopping to do much more than make sure she was not followed. Something she did by instinct more than necessity here. Down the main street leading away from the Lodge towards Westgate. Turning down another street she came to the small inn she currently lodged at, run by an old elf by the name of Arwyyl. The Whisper was a quiet out of the way little place. Perfect for her liking.
As she entered the hall there were already several other regulars who she had not met, sitting and chatting. She sat at one of the tables in the corner of the room and ordered a light meal of salad, berries and cheese with a little wine and began eating while she waited for the contact to arrive. She had already sent word where she was staying to her family so she expected them shortly. She had almost finished when another elf, walked into the room, searching for her.
When their eyes met, Sezira jumped up with joy.
"Irith!" she exclaimed. He smiled and walked over to her. She hugged her younger brother. "I did not think Father would send you," she said. "Why, who else would he send to see you before heading off on a grand adventure for the Pathfinder Society!" They both smiled at each other. Finally taking a seat each, Irith ordered some dinner and they ate together.
Into the evening they talked and exchanged information. She promised to keep them informed of her discoveries and would send a letter every week if possible. Irith was currently working on a case to uncover a plot to bring down a family allied to them, which would reduce their influence in the elven lands also. Irith hired a room for the night and they both retired to their beds.
In the morning he accompanied her to the boat. "Be safe, be on your guard," he said.
"Of course brother." They saw the others there loading up the boat.
Good, i'm not late.
Saying goodbye to her dear brother with a hug and bringing their foreheads together momentarily, they both knew it would be a long time before they saw each other again.
"I'll miss you brother."
"And I'll miss you."
Irith then left to return to Kyonin and she was alone.
Turning to her new pathfinder companions she smiled again, eager to embark.

Redona agrees with Misha on her joke about enthusiasm. A small smile appears on her face, for a moment, before realizing they both want her to tell them about her talents. She doesn't sit though, and continues standing out of respect for the pair.

"I... er... I'm a cleric of Sarenrae." she tells the pair nervously but proudly. "I'm good at magic, mostly... especially healing." She swallows. "And... and I really like helping people."

Redona sits down swiftly but rather stiffly when Misha motions for her to. "I would be happy to help." she insists. "I did a lot of studying for most of my life.
