So the aboleth's own excretions turn air-breathing creatures into water-breathing creatures? Could that perhaps solve our water-breathing problem for us?
Rikar Sarakin |
Possibly, but other bad things happen when you get that close to an aboleth.
Josef Guardson |
Yeah.
Buff those fort saves, we need to have some means to breath underwater, and use long pointy things to poke the baddy into submission.
Alternatively, poisoning its water supply might work, although I am unsure how resistant it would be to such a tactic.
Misha Keroun |
So the aboleth's own excretions turn air-breathing creatures into water-breathing creatures? Could that perhaps solve our water-breathing problem for us?
It could if you don't want to worry about breathing air any more.
Its excretions also cause other mutations.
ETA: All Misha learned was that it gives you the ability to breathe water, while taking away your ability to breathe air. She did not learn anything about a duration.
She also learned that it warps the flesh in other ways. (Really, you do not want to go near aboleth slime.)
If I cheat and look at the stat block, that does revert after a few hours, but I don't think Misha knows that. I posted that she mused that it might be temporary but is not sure. I hope that is not too metagamey.
Josef Guardson |
FYI: I am getting married this Saturday, so will most likely not be around online after tomorrow (Friday 5/9/14) morning. Feel free to bot me as needed. I will likely be back online Tuesday or Wednesday.
Rikar Sarakin |
Wow, congratulations! Have fun!
Misha Keroun |
Well heck! Congratulations! Have a wonderful happy day!
Misha Keroun |
Hi guys, going away for the weekend. If things get active, please bot Misha.
Therena |
So do these dwarves live in the mountain, or are they from that city where the party dropped off the goblin near the beginning of the campaign?
Kreig Ironhand |
These guys are from Stonehold Fortress outside the mountain where we left the goblin.
Misha Keroun |
Realized something, alter self does not allow water breathing, just grants a Swim speed. Still, that might come in handy.
Therena |
Well, I have an embarrassing confession to make. I had two aasimar clerics of Empyreal Lords in my bullpen of characters: Therena and one of Jaidz. For some reason I've started referring to her god as Jaidz when she worships Sinashakti! I'm not quite sure when or how I got the two of them confused. Her personality and abilities are all intact, and I've been thinking of her as a cleric of Sinashakti, with the pursuits of joy, travel, and doing good above all others, except I've been typing Jaidz.
Hopefully, this won't be too confusing.
Misha Keroun |
As I don't think it's come up substantively, I wouldn't worry about it. :)
Josef Guardson |
No worries.
Can we smash these mephits? Or do we want to talk to them???
Kreig Ironhand |
They may be worth some intel...
DM Papa:Hmmm... Can I tell if they've spotted me yet?
Rikar Sarakin |
Can we smash these mephits? Or do we want to talk to them???
Yeah, I wasn't sure about this either, which is why I'm glad y'all came up to chat too.
Borris Livestrom |

Josef Guardson |
FYI: will be away for the weekend attending a wedding. Should be back online Sunday evening.

Pulling the OOC discussion to OOC --
Rikar, I completely misinterpreted your tone.
I have however gone through a grumpypants cleansing session (which involves listening to Abba and singing along very loudly) and apologize for the confusion/derail/etc.
Josef, I think you reacted appropriately IC and properly. Misha was not saying we shouldn't fight it. I am not saying we shouldn't fight it. She was just remarking sardonically upon the situation. I'll try to make my intention clearer.
I'm actually more just confused about why we're running into elementals and this creature when before the caves seemed entirely filled with skum. I feel like we've walked into an entirely different story. Misha may comment on that IC after the fight is over.
Krieg, I saw a Shakespeare in the Park production of Othello that I kind of almost wished that had happened (not that I would really wish the poor actors dead). But people were laughing at the end. Loudly and hysterically at the end. Of Othello.

Misha Keroun |
Fun!
Waiting to see status of monster before acting.
Rikar Sarakin |
Kreig Ironhand |
Hey gang, still in the fight, just got a bit busy...again!
I'll crank out a posy today, but if you want to bot me a smidge that works too. Kreig will follow along with Rikar to clear out that tunnel.
Josef Guardson |
FYI everyone: I will be away in sunny Curacao from Wednesday the 25th until Wednesday the 2nd. I will have my phone with me, but since I'll be on my honeymoon, I don't know just how much posting I'll be doing.
Rikar Sarakin |
I wish I hadn't just remembered that, just as elementals are immune to precision damage like sneak attack, they're immune to criticals. I figured it's okay to mention it here, because it's not like we'll change our tactics and decide not to crit.
Misha Keroun |
I wish I hadn't just remembered that
1) With all of you becoming Large, you have all now become effectively Soft Cover for the Elemental for Krieg and anyone else shooting at it, granting it a +4 cover bonus to AC.
2) Anyone without Precise shot should be at a -4 to hit the creature since it's engaged in melee.
Which means anyone attacking it with ranged weapons who doesn't have Precise Shot (which I think is most of us) needs a +8 to possibly effectively hit it. Fortunately Krieg's 20 hits anyway.
Kreig Ironhand |
Figures, paizo's Dice roller starts serving up 20s like a crazy and we face off with a beasie immune to crits.
Misha Keroun |
Nice!
Bromen Spellbane |
Hi folks, long-time lurker really excited about the chance to join such a great game!
Bromen is from a clan that stuck to the old ways pretty strongly, but Im going to keep his accent a little more subtle since Kreig has already set the bar pretty high in that department.....
Looking forward to gaming with you!
-Mike
Kreig Ironhand |
Welcome aboard, Bromen. Glad to have another dwarf in the mix. Look forward to interacting...assuming of course I finally get to a post on the boards!
Misha Keroun |
Yes, I should have said this ooc too---welcome, Mike. I hope you have fun here.
Rikar Sarakin |
Welcome, Bromen! Looking forward to playing with you.
All - I'm on a quick road trip that's left me less time to post than I expected, will aim to get a proper post up tonight.
Misha Keroun |
Oh, on another thing --- the Tear which Borris had was I think the +2 to Cha one, yes? With +2 to saves vs enchantments? Should I hold onto it? Any other low will save or Cha-using character want a stab at it?
Also, Josef, what are you going to do with your Tear vs. the headband?
Josef Guardson |
Keeping headband, the only thing I lose is the language, which I can get as a real one learned once we level again.
Anyone else want a tear of intelligence and the Atan language?
Bromen Spellbane |
SO SORRY for the horrible timing, but Im leaving 7/20 to take my son to Boy Scout Camp*.....6 nights up in the woods of upstate NY....i'll be bringing my iPhone but not sure what type of signal Im going to get. I will try to check in daily but do not hesitate to BOT me as needed to keep things moving forward.
Ive been looking forward to the opportunity to join this game for a long time, hopefullt my technology wont fail me!
*know youre a camper, Papa, we'll be platform-tenting it at Camp Ranachqua just off exit 104 of Rte 17 in Monticello
DM Papa.DRB |
Yea, been there, done that.
I was a Scout, and my son was also and we did the platform camping. But this was 25 years ago with him, and a long long time ago for me !!!
This is what I call camping now. HERE
-- david
Rikar Sarakin |
I've done the same with a PbP or two in the past, Bromen - eagerly wrote up a backstory and built a character, ready to jump in, and had to go on an extended work trip, camping trip, whatever, just as it got started. Camping with the son definitely trumps swapping electrons with us.
And DRB - I did my first RV trip last summer (usually do things with a backpack or a canoe), rented an RV with my family for a couple of weeks in Montana. It was a nice one, brand new 29-footer - but yours has an island in the kitchen. Dayummm!
Kreig Ironhand |
Senor Papa: If Kreig uses True Strike on his bow, could he target one of the tentacles? Or is that to akin to a Called Shot?
DM Papa.DRB |
More akin to a Called Shot, but it won't matter. The Aboleth is just one big pile of HP and there is not a listing for damaging / cutting off a tentacle separate from it's regular HP.
I thought there used to be in 3.5, but I can't find it in PF. If anyone knows of such a rule and can point me to it, I will gladly apply it.
-- david
Kreig Ironhand |
If it's a Called Shot, the paizo prd has some tasty crunch on it. Check out this link: Called Shot Rules
Here's an excerpt for arms ...
Arm
Arms are the manipulating limbs of a creature, including tentacles. Wings are also considered to be arms for purposes of a called shot. Called shots to the arm are easy (–2 penalty).
Called Shot: A called shot to an arm deals no additional damage, but for 1d4 rounds, any attack rolls, ability checks, or skill checks made using the wounded arm take a –2 penalty. A flying creature shot in the wing must make a Fly check to avoid descending involuntarily .
Critical Called Shot: A critical hit to the arm deals 1d4 points of Dexterity damage and 1d4 points of Strength damage. A successful Fortitude saving throw halves the ability damage (minimum 1 point to each attribute). The target also suffers the effects of a called shot to the arm for 1d4 minutes.
Debilitating Blow: A debilitating blow deals 1d6 points of Dexterity damage and 1d6 points of Strength damage. The blow renders the arm useless until healed unless the target succeeds at a Fortitude saving throw. If the saving throw fails by 5 or more, the arm is severed or otherwise mangled such that only regeneration or similar effects can repair it. The target also suffers the effects of a called shot to the arm (if the arm remains usable) for 2d6 minutes.
Big thing is these are variant rules in the Ultimate Combat book. So it'd be a big door to open if you're allowing some of that into the mix. My goal is to get those gross arms off his pals. ;)
I'm good whatever your decide.
