You head towards the Temple to Abadar, and this time Hilde pounds hard on the iron gate that is locked and blocking access to the main door. She pounds it so hard that the gate rattles, however it does not open.
From inside the temple, you finally are acknowledged. "Who are you? What do you want? Do you not know that sickness abounds, and the gods have forsaken this place?"

It seems strange to hole up in a god's refuge if you think they have abandoned you? Plus none of us are afflicted and I might be immune?
Dilwyn Blevins |
"We're here to try to help," Dilwyn tries to add. "As my friend said, we haven't been affected by this disease. We are recent arrivals to this town, and have been investigating the nature and source of the affliction so that we might put a stop to it. Perhaps we can trade our assistance for your information?"

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Dilwyn raises an eyebrow. With the tales of the executions being performed here part of him wonders if they're planning an ambush upon opening the doors. On the other hand, though, he can sort of understand why they might be afraid of strangers with weapons, but the exercise is in many ways pointless. Hilde has already demonstrated her devastating ability as a weapon even without wielding one. He's... not so confident in his own ability in the same situation, with the exception of his ability to toss small shocks of electricity. Nevertheless, he draws his new dagger and his sling and lays them to the side. His staff, however, he intends to pass off as a mere walking stick, and leans on it waiting for the others to comply or not.

Kit looks at the temple. Then to his axe. Then back to the temple. If they think I'm going to throw down my axe, then they are daft! I don't make it a habit of visiting temples, ah..other pursuits...you know....So I think I'll skip this one. I'll be right here waiting if you all return...with my axe! Kit will then plop on the ground with his axe laying accross his legs. I'll keep an eye out for the crazies.
Kit 'Skylark' Bridger |
Kit looks up at Hilde, What? Seeing that the woman is unflinching, he rises up. Just for the record, I think this is a bad idea! He sticks his axe into the ground along with his other weapons. Well! Let's get this over with! he says sullenly.
Dilwyn Blevins |
Ignoring the disagreement between Hilde and Iskender for a moment, Dilwyn calls back to the voice from the other side making the demands while still leaning on his staff. "Who is this Vuelib to give such orders? This demand is an exercise in pointlessness. If our intention was to do you harm, we could do so without the aid of such artificial constructs of convenience, and we would not bother to ask nicely for entry. You say the gods have abandoned you. I suggest it was your good sense instead."

Iskender starts walking to the Apothecary, after everyone else lays their weapons aside. The door opens and the voice from inside says, "enter the temple of Vuelib and learn of his ways." With Hilde leading you enter the temple into what seems to be the main worship hall. You see at the far side of the room a middle aged man, in a breastplate, a morningstar at his belt and a younger man in mail, holding a short spear.
Just as you are all inside the door everyone, sees two more younger men, trying to sneak towards the door along the wall, and the two men across the other side of the room draw their weapons. "Die unbelievers!" shouts the middle aged man.

The cleric and three acolytes attack the group, with the cleric missing Hilde, an acolyte missing Zaladrel, an acolyte hitting Dilwyn wounding him, and the other acolyte tries to make up for his miss on Kit, but just cannot seem to get thru his armor.

Dilwyn grunts in pain as the one attacker hurts him a bit. He briefly considers throwing up a mist to cover a retreat, but the others seem to be faring well and if these former clerics have lost their minds, either through disease or stress, then they're going to have to come back here at some point anyway and they might as well deal with this problem now, while they're here. He stands upright and swings his staff in a downward arc, attempting to knock the acolyte that wounded him squarely on the head.

Hilde tries to kick the cleric in front of her, but her kick just slides off his leggings. Dilwyn swings his staff at the acolyte next to him, and puts him down. Kit follows Hilde lead and puts down the acolyte in front of him. Zaladrel keeps concentrating on his Serendipitous Luck for the group.
Meanwhile the remaining acolyte and the cleric wallop Zaladrel and Hilde.

Iskender moves to where he can attempt to disarm one of the acolytes, which he promptly does. Hilde sensing a flank, moves to the side of the cleric and continues to work without a weapon, but her booted foot is a weapon and she kicks the cleric hard. Dilwyn moves to the now disarmed acolyte, but misses with his swing. Kit follows Hilde suit, and steps up and punches the cleric in the face and puts the man down. Zaladrel continues to concentrate on providing a bit of luck to his comrades, but he steps back to be out of range of the acolyte.
With his leader down the remaining acolyte drops his shield and falls to his knees, "don't kill me. I surrender."

While the others interrogate the surviving acolyte, Dilwyn starts looking around the temple for signs of what's been going on here, including checking the bodies for bite marks that might indicate that they'd been acting this way because they were infected. Dilwyn genuinely hopes that's the case, because the thought of otherwise sane people acting this way is depressing.
"You never did explain who Vuelib is," he points out over his shoulder as he pokes around. "You said you'd show us, then decided to kill us for not knowing. It's all rather confusing. Are you crazy, perhaps?"

Hilde kicks the downed cleric a couple of times for good measure, and to make sure that he is down.
Kit and Dilwyn interrogate the acolyte, who is now sobbing while sitting on the floor. "It was Hagrim, the head cleric, who made us do it. We locked ourselves away after the killing started, then one of the villagers scratched him, and he scratched us. Abadar abandoned us, and we kept hearing whispers in our heads from Vuelib. We have been begging him to restore our spells and divine abilities but he hasn't so far. Hagrim had us round up the remaining villagers, and he hung three of them on the White Oak tree, and there are three more in the back room, bound and gagged." He stops talking, just realizing that he probably just signed his death warrant.
Searching the room, including the acolytes proves easy for everyone except Hilde, who seems to still be concentrating on the head cleric.
On the head cleric you find a breastplate, a +1 morningstar, a masterwork dagger, masterwork light crossbow with 10 bolts, and 80 gp in coins. Each of the three acolytes has scale mail armor, a heavy wooden shield, a short spear, a scroll of sanctuary, and 20 gp in coins. Behind the altar in a concealed alcove there is an unlocked strongbox, with 300 gp in coins. Opening the door at the rear of the main temple, reveals a study and several bedrooms. In the main bedroom / study you find clerical vestments and in a secret compartment in the head clerics desk, you find four potions of cure light wounds, a wand of lesser restoration (11 charges), and a scroll of prayer.
You also see three bound, gagged, but alive villagers.

"We should bring the surviving cleric back to the jail with the other infected," Dilwyn suggests. "Hopefully our investigations outside of town will yield something that can be used for a cure, and then the law can decide whether he was competent to be responsible for his actions here."
Dilwyn immediately begins to see to the prisoners as soon as he finds them. "The infected clerics have been dealt with, and you'll soon be safe," he assures them. "I just need to check to make sure you're alright before we set you free." He then sets about examining the prisoners for bite or scratch marks that would indicate they've been exposed to the infection.

Kit 'Skylark' Bridger |
If there isn't a law then he will be judged by his god! Kit says with a spit.
As for sending in Hilde, that sounds like a good plan. I am sure she will not miss us getting in the way! He says with a wink and grin at the barbarian.
