You decide to go to Sheriff Hemlock's office first, hoping to let him know of your success in the swamp.

Approaching the jail, you hear the Sheriff and another man arguing in the office about where he can setup his caravan now that he is back in town. As you listen for a few moments, it is obvious that this is an old argument, where the Sheriff wants the caravan to setup just outside of town, and the man wants it set up just inside of town.

Gundar, who once was a caravan guard recognizes the voice as that of Sandru Vhiski, his old boss.

As he approaches the jail, Gundar hears a voice he hasn't heard in a while. He stops the party and whispers, That voice belongs to me old boss, Sandru Vhiski! He waits hoping that the disagreement between the sheriff and Sandru abates and when it doesn't seem like it will any time soon. Gundar will adjust his clothes, make sure his hair and beard is in place and wipe his hands on his britches (Sandru always looks professional and always required those in his employ to look the same and even though Gundar no longer works exclusively for Sandru, old habits die hard!) He will cough loudly and walk through the door. He feigns surprise. Evening Sheriff, Evening Boss, What brings ye back to Sandpoint? Hope its not trouble with ye brother. As soon as Gundar mentions Sandru's brother, he realizes he probably erred. Sandru and Jubrayl do not have the best relationship and it is best not to menion one in the company of the other. Quickly trying to change the subject Gundar will mutter, Weather's been nice. The caravan must make many miles without any storms. Realizing that both Sandru and Sheriff Hemlock are staring at him, Gundar will shift from foot to foot, completely unnerved by the situation. In fact more unnerved than he was fighting the Goblin Chief! The charming Sandru always made Gundar feel oafish by comparison and this is no exception!

Narrator [Maps, handouts, pictures: Links in top of page spoiler]

"No, no. No trouble. Just passing thru and wanting to stop for a few days before continuing on, and someone is being stubborn." Sandru says to Gundar.

"Yes, someone is definitely being stubborn" the Sheriff responds. "Ok, you can stay inside but one incident and I'll lock all of you up!"

Turning to the group, Sheriff Hemlock says, "and what are you here for? More Goblin ears?"

Tyr listens to the argument, trying to understand both sides and if its really serious or not. Out good Sheriff must have reason to mistrust the caravan master, or at least some within the caravan. he thinks.

No more ears Sheriff. Its as Ulf says. We have gone to the cave and ended a few undead there. But we saw no army or anything that could be considered a threat to Sandpoint. We thought we had better report in about it just the same.

Male Dwarf Cleric 3 (HP 33/33 AC:15 T:10 F:15 Saves F:+7 R:+2 W:+7 CMB:+4 CMD:14 Init:+0 Perc: +4)

Gundar is glad that Sandru seems to distracted with his argument with the sheriff to notice any inconsistencies in his appearence. He listens to Ulf and Tyr deliver their report to the sheriff and adds looking at both the sheriff and at Sandru, Is there anything else yon need taken care of now that it seems like them stinkin' goblins won't be bothering anyone anymore?

Narrator [Maps, handouts, pictures: Links in top of page spoiler]

Sheriff Hemlock listens intently as Ulf and the rest deliver their report on the goblins, and the undead in the caves. "Well, you all seemed to have handled yourselves quite well. Quite well indeed." he muses. "There are no other pressing problems" and glances over at Sandru, "I hope.", then looks back to the group. "Go have yourself some fun at the Dragon. I think Ameiko knows enough of her ancestral lands language that she can translate that note for you." And with that, he turns to some paperwork on his desk, and picks up a paper and grumbles at it.

Walking out with Sandru, he looks at Gundar, and the others, "Old argument. One time, unknown to me, we had a criminal from the Riddleport sign on as a guard, and he caused a bit of a ruckus here in town, and Hemlock has never forgotten." He then looks at Gundar, "getting a bit sloppy are we." However the boyish grin on his face gives away the tease.

Gundar is all to willing to leave the argument between Sheriff Hemlock and Sandru behind. In fact the mention of the Rusty Dragon starts his mouth to water with the thoughts of dinner and ale - and not necessarily in that order. Even the tease from Sandru cannot dampen his appetite for mead and meal.

You going to the Rusty Dragon, Boss? For dinner and...uh..to see Ameiko? As he says this he glances at Elk'Lyn. Does the Elf know that the rumor was that Sandru and Ameiko were more than friends? Perhaps she should wait for another time to give Ameiko one of the set of jewels. She might find herself as a third wheel while Sandru is in town!

The elf sees Gundar glance but its meaning don’t register. He had however, mentioned Ameiko!
”I agree! Let’s go see her!” says the elf cheerfully Should I clean the jewels first? Suppose it’s only normal. I’ll clean then inside the Rusty. Sandru, I’ve heard that name before I’m just not sure ”where, have your travels taken you Sandru? Gundar seldom talks about anything other than breakfast, hard boiled eggs and beer.” she looks at the dwarf and says ”Don’t get me wrong, the eggs are delicious.”

Arriving at the Inn, you all enter, Sandru taking the lead, and he yells out "Ameiko, I am back." A moment later, Ameiko comes running out from the back and gives the man a big hug. After their greeting she turns to you all, "welcome back. How did your adventures in the swamp go?"

"Many goblins were felled on our blades!" the Northman declares confidently, grinning broadly as he brags about each of their accomplishments during the outing. Úlf recounts the fight against the goblin village, how they discovered most of them already dead, then traced them back to a cave that had been occupied by several undead warriors.

Believing the details to be of particular importance, he describes the strange look of the skeletons as best he can, punctuating his tale by revealing the hollowed sword they had found on the strongest of the undead, opening the hilt of the blade and revealing the note he had found inside it and offering it to the proprietress on the belief that she would be able to tell them all what it says.

We also found another chest in a cave like the one we found at the goblin camp. Gundar says as he tries to reach behind the bar for some spirits, but his short statue makes it impossible for him to reach anything. After a few moments of standing on his tiptoes and not getting better results, Gundar will just walk behind the counter, lay some coins down and help himself to a tankard of ale. He stifles a burp and looking rather pleased says, Hey Ameiko! Is there anything leftover from dinner? I'm famished!

Narrator [Maps, handouts, pictures: Links in top of page spoiler]

Ameiko shakes her head at Gundar's request, but with a smile on her face. "Other than food and ale, do you ever think of anything else?" she quips.

"I will have to put that tale to song Ulf, and of course you will play a prominent role. Ulf the Goblin Slayer, and Gundar the always starving sidekick." she chuckles.

Then listening intently as Ulf describes the skeleton and the sword, she says "that must have been a Samurai in life. They are dedicated warriors, usually to a Tien house. And this sword is a wakizashi, a sword from my homeland. And a note. Here let me translate it" and she gets some paper and an ink quill and sits down at a table. After a few minutes, she shows you what she has written, and explains two of the names. "Rokuro Kaijitsu was my grandfather, which would means the letter’s intended recipient was my father, the now-deceased Lonjiku Kaijitsu. Tsutamu was Rokuro Kaijitsu’s devoted bodyguard."

I want Ameiko to hug me like she did with Sandru, but I can’t really ask for a hug, but hugs apart, this letter means that Ameiko has lots of enemies, family enemies, but enemies the same. ”You helped me once, I still did not had the chance to repay. When Ameiko asks him if he ever thinks of anything other than food or ale, Gundar pauses for a moment and a look of contemplation crosses his face. I can't say that I do! Is there anything else more important than a tasty meal and a tankard of ale? he asks in a way that would seem to make the question rhetorical. When Ameiko tells about the samurai, Gundar pipes up, You keep feeding me and giving me ale, I'll be dedicated warrior, Ameiko!

As she translates the note, Gundar's jovial air disappears as this all seemed to get very personal all of a sudden. I agree with the She-Elf, We'll protect you and if you need us to go to Brinewell to get yer stuff, we will - provided that you provision us with some food for the trip! He turns to Try. Hey Tyr! The contents of the letter seem to instill a sense of sympathetic regret in the Ulfen warrior. "Whatever was in box must have been very important to your ancestors, Ameiko. The Crown of the World is no small journey to take! It is sad that your father never received this letter...never knew of your grandfather's apology. But now you know, yes? Úlf will honor your intentions. If you wish to go find this vault, it would be an honor to go with you to restore the honor of your ancestors to them by returning their last gift to you. It is hard thing to live knowing your actions have brought dishonor to your kin. Úlf knows this well...it has been many years since I left my father and mother in Jol. I was just a cub then! But one day I will go back and set things right, when I have won many battles and restored the dishonor I brought to my ancestors when I left. If you wish my help in restoring your father's honor to his and your ancestors, it would be great joy for Úlf to help." he pledges. It's clear from the tone of his voice and the repetition of his intentions that he considers the restoration of his family's honor, or of any family's honor, extremely important.

Kortun: A DC 18 Knowledge (history) check reveals that Brinewall’s last commander at the time the colony was destroyed was a man named Andril Kortun.

After hearing the responses from the group, Ameiko turns to you all "thank you, my friends. I agree, we should go to Brinewall Castle and find what my grandfather is talking about."

She motions for Sandru to come over, and she talks to him. "Once more, old friend. Will you take us to Brinewall?"

"We will not be going near any larger town, in fact most of the towns we pass will be smaller than Sandpoint. I will be taking a slightly round about way, especially to avoid Riddleport." replies Sandru to Tyr.

Sandru continues, "and what job can each of you perform while we are traveling." and he chuckles and looks over at Gundar, "guard, healer, or will you eat the caravan out of all supplies like last time." Sandru lists out the jobs that are available, and lists off what he, Ameiko, Koya and Shalelu can do.

"There will be no passengers on this trip, as this is not as much a trading mission, as it is an exploration. I will need to know what you can each do, so I can hire the rest of the folk over the next two days." He concludes.

He turns to Sandru. Anything you need to get the wagons ready, I'm your dwarf, Boss! Gundar says as he straightens out his attire without forethought. I'll have to go back to being on me best behavior!

In response to Sandru's question, Gundar replies, Aye! Guard and if I do me guarding job poorly, then healer! Ha! As for eating the caravan out of supplies, I seem to remember that we had others that contributed to those dwindling supplies. He pats his empty belly I helped, of course!

Ameiko looks around at the four of you, and chuckles over the apparent what do we do now sense that she is picking up from the group. "As this trip is for me to find out what happened to my grandfather and family, I will front the money to prepare the caravan for travel. All that I ask of you, is when we reach Brinewall, any relics or objects from my family are mine. Anything else that we find, you all can do with what you wish."

Sandru looks over at his friend, "we can work at the details of whom we need to hire. All I need to know now is which job each of you will be best suited for and wishes to take on. Gundar, you have been a guard for me in the past, and perhaps that is the best spot for you." He looks at Elk'lyn, "I think that Shalelu could use a hand as scout and guide. The two of you together should make a formidable team." He looks at the large human man, and suggests "Ulf, perhaps you could help Gundar with the guard duties." Then he looks at Tyr, "wizard eh. Perhaps being a spellcaster would suit you best. If these jobs are suitable, let me know now and I can hire the rest, and outfit the wagons over the next few days."

Gundar looks at the gold from his share. Mentally figuring out how much it would cost to purchase a magical warhammer, he decides that he doesn't have enough, so instead he spends the next few days drinking and eating, as well as occasionally helping Sandru get the caravan ready for the trip.

Elk'lyn took a small necklace from the stash as part of his reward, and after Sandru leaves the Inn, approaches Ameiko. A small tear appears in her eye, and she says to Elk'lyn, "first you bring the letter from my grandfather, and now this necklace from my homeland. Moving forward
With your new found wealth, everyone buys some supplies for the trip to Brinewall Village. Two days after the plan was formed in Ameiko Inn, she turns over running the tavern to her staff, and you all set out.

The journey to Brinewall takes the caravan from Sandpoint up along the Lost Coast Road, passes through the villages of Galduria and Wolf ’s Ear, cuts through the northeastern reach of Churlwood, and eventually reaches the northern town of Roderic’s Cove. Sandru, refusing to go thru the city of Riddleport follows an old track north of Roderic’s Cove that skirts the southern Stony Mountains, then winds up into the Velashu Uplands, following the river northwest to a low pass in the mountains and then due north into the Nolands and, eventually, to Brinewall.

It is Friday noonish where I am now. I'll give everyone the weekend to update their character sheets with the items purchased, and role play anything you wish to either back in Sandpoint or on the Road, and I will have a new post probably Tuesday morning, although I will respond to questions.

Tyr shops with some thought and ends up buying a first level Pearl of Power and a scroll of Grease to augment his casting. And he buys enough parchment and ink to scribe 10 first level spells.

He also takes his detailed map and makes a copy in his down time to present as a gift to Koya. He scribes this as best be can with illuminations in his own hand.

Kola, I have a small gift for you to celebrate our leaving Sand Point. He produces the map and offers it to her. It is a map of the entire swamp near Sand Point. I have now walked much of it and have used my own experience and two other maps to construct what I believe to be the most accurate map available. I hope you like it.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19

Before he leaves he will copy the scroll of Grease into his spell book and scribe 3 more scrolls to carry with him. (Grease, Shield, and Obscuring Mist.)

Upon returning to the others and having readied himself for the trip to Brinewall Castle, something in the Northman's demeanor seems to be changed. You can't quite put your finger on it, but there's something just a little bit happier about his attitude. Whatever happened while he was gone, it's clear that he's very pleased about it.

The track that the caravan has been following all this time passes about half a mile east of Brinewall, continuing north and crossing the Steam River into the Nolands over a weathered wood-and-stone bridge. An old signpost about a hundred yards south of this bridge reads “To Brinewall,” and points down an overgrown trail that winds through a forest. This track quickly fades away entirely into the undergrowth, and further progress toward the ruined village must be made on foot.

Gundar:
As the caravan has been moving northward, Ameiko, who normally is bubbly and vivacious, has become listless and sickly. While she has been able to hide it from the others, you with your training have noticed this, although any time you mention it she laughs it off and for a moment looks and acts like her old self, and then as soon as she thinks that you are away, looks sickly again. Finally just before reaching the end of the trail where you all will have to progress on foot, she turns pale and becomes shaky.

You reach a place where Sandru determines that he can turn the wagons around, and he says "Brinewall village is perhaps another mile up the trail, but the wagons can not go any further."

Just then, Ameiko turns deathly pale and passes out.

Brinewall Village. It is accessible from the "Campaign Info" tab.
