After a long days work, you are spending a relaxing evening in the Rusty Dragon Inn, run by Ameiko Kaijitsu, friend to all, and confidant to some of the younger crowd in Sandpoint. Dinner and beverage have arrived, and just as you are about to being eating, Sheriff Hemlock comes in and after speaking briefly with Ameiko, announces to the room at large, ”the Licktoad goblins of Brinestump Marsh have grown unusually aggressive lately. Must be those fireworks that they have. They have been attacking merchant caravans along the Lost Coast Road, and I am re-instating the 10 gold piece bounty on fresh goblin right ears, but listen up. A few adventurers went there 3 days ago, but have not come back yet, so you young'ns be careful if you go. Also, come see me in the morning before you leave.” With the announcement made, he leaves the Inn.

The four of you gather together at one table to plan on how you intend to save the town from the Licktoad Goblins.

You all at least have seen one another in town. Role play among yourselves your response to this and to each other, and when you are ready I will post the next morning and you going to see the Sheriff. I'll be around today, and a little tomorrow to answer questions.

Hmm. Bad that the goblins are emboldened of late. Perhaps a few well places arrows could remedy that. I could use the coin too, truth be told. Gotta pay my bar bill somehow. And adventurers are missing? Anyone know how many or who specifically? They might need help. Tyr looks to the others at the table to judge their interest.

When Tyr mentions his financial situation Gundar unconsciously reaches down and feels his own coin pouch and realizes that he too is lacking adequate coin.

I don't have any love for goblins so if you are all gain-I'm in! Besides I think my bar tab might be a bit larger than yours, Tyr*. It has been pretty quite here - no trouble, no ale!

Gundar does a quick look around the room and senses tonight will also be a quiet night. Ameiko has been charging him for his ale all week.
A few goblin ears should keep me in ale for another week.

"So you are engaging in one vice to pay for another?" Saif asks, his accent conspicuously Taldan. Leaning back in his chair with a tankard of milk in his hand, he looks up at the ceiling. "Though..." he continues, "What of the men who went and have yet to come back. I believe someone should find out what became of them."

Tyr smiles at the human as he sips at his expensive wine, evidently not in the slightest provoked. He knows little of us Gundar. He nudges the dwarf conspiratorially. Just because his thin desert blood can run on water he expects the older races to do likewise. Turning back to the Qadiran he explains I'll drink a bottle of wine a day good Saif, and I expect the dwarf here to keep a respectable amount of ale occupied, and do not believe either wine or ale be a vice. And since when is putting down ambushing goblins anything but respectable? If our bar bill motivates us to go and help missing adventurers then I'll call drinking a virtue. What pleasure hating deities do you worship out in the burning sands anyway? His smile somehow both invites a response but also denotes a complete understanding of your point. He looks a little board and you figure he might enjoy a good theological debate.

Male Dwarf Cleric 3 (HP 33/33 AC:15 T:10 F:15 Saves F:+7 R:+2 W:+7 CMB:+4 CMD:14 Init:+0 Perc: +4)

Ha! What some call vice we dwarves consider nourishment!

Gundar says as he finishes off his tankard and places it on the table with a dull thud.

Just because those adventures haven't returned yet, doesn't mean anything bad happened to them. They could be off on another adventure or shin deep in Goblin ears!

Yeah right!

But if it makes you feel better by saying finding them is the purpose of our expedition, Saif, I'm fine with that as well. We just might have to separate some goblins from their ears!

Gundar again feels his money pouch.

Ameiko! More Ale!

That's a oportunity! I know that Ameiko has nothing to do with this, but if I can prove myself...
Elk walks toward the table were three already are discussing about the goblins.
She has a really pale skin, and almost with hair, her features are not so diferent from an average elf, the only thing is her eyes. A deep black, with almost no white in then.
I've no objection in saving others, and I have much less objection about getting some gold out of a good act. She says after sitting in the table. I've already seen all of you here, but I do not know your name. I'm Elk'lyn. I'm going to be at the sheriff door at the first light, any of you'll be there too?

Saif stares at Tyr suspiciously for a moment, an insulted visage playing across his face. He suddenly bursts into hand-clapping laughter. "Ah, the classic adventurers! Motivated to greatness by either wine, wenches, or war." he pauses for a moment and lets out any stray moments of laughter, "There is but one Goddess beating down on the deserts of my homeland, and the Dawnflower is anything but pleasure hating."

His attention turns to Gundar and tuts lightly. "Saying is not enough, my friend. If I make this journey it will be to insure no evil has befallen those who have gone missing." With that, he finishes his milk and leans forward, resting his elbows on the table. The banter continues around him as Elk'lyn finds her way to the table and introduces herself, "Well met Elk'lyn. I am Saif al-Fajr of Katapesh. It seems these two have a tab to pay for so they'll be up bright and early. I may come along to keep them out of trouble."

Taking a last verbal jab, in jest, at the paladin Tyr concludes Then I shall feel terrible remorse cutting the right ear from every goblin you kill. Perhaps I will even make a donation to the Dawnflower with some of the gold it earns me.

After introducing yourselves to one another, you all head off for a nights good nights sleep before heading out to the Brinestump Marsh.

Morning comes, and after having the morning repast, you all meet at the Sheriff's office. Sheriff Hemlock steps out, stretching but with a cup of hot coffee in hand and looks you all over, and comments, "The marsh is about three miles south of here and it may not be as large as the Mushfens farther to the south, but the swamp is dense and tangled. It’s easy to get lost in the place. No one’s made a really detailed map of Brinestump—there’s been no need, since there’s not much of value within. But if anyone knows his way around in the marsh, it’d be that old eccentric halfling Walthus Proudstump, the self-appointed “warden” of the swamp. A fishing trail leads from the Lost Coast Road directly to Walthus’s shack in the swamp, it is the first trail after the swamp starts. If you wish to explore the marsh, you could do a lot worse than following that trail to seek out the halfling’s advice."

He looks at Saif and his horse. "Young'n, I would leave the horse here. It would most likely flounder and drown or die in the swamp. Any questions for me before you head out?"

Try buys a full quiver of arrows on the way to the meeting, likely having to pull them fletcher away from his breakfast to make the transaction.

Tyr nots at the sound advise. A halfling is it. I believe I will bag up a double helping of Ameiko's hearty breakfast to offer the fellow. I suspect he will be more inclined to be helpful on a full belly and Ameiko is a very good cook.

Sheriff, I have not forgotten what you did for me. And I have a question. How many and what manner of adventures went to investigate the goblin threat? It'll be easier to help then if we know who they are.

When the sheriff mentions the halfling, Gundar looks up at his 'tall' companions. Ha! At last we will have someone closer to me eye level! The sheriff asks if there are any questions and Gundar pipes up, Sheriff, I don't be knowin' much about the marsh, besides goblins, are there any other baddies that live there? He hears Tyr say he will be getting an extra breakfast for the halfling. An extra breakfast? hmmm That might be a good idea - not only for the halfling but for myself as well since it might be trail rations for the next few days!

As usual Saif was up before the rising of the sun, and after his morning workout was watching the east as it rose over the Mushfens and cast light onto Sandpoint. He met with Tyr, Elk'lyn, and Gundar as they each approached the Sheriff's office and waited patiently as the Sheriff gave them instructions.

Saif nods and ties his horse up. He takes time to brush her mane and take a good look in her mouth. "Sweet Applejack can be a fickle girl. Make sure you take care of her during my absence."

He takes his backpack, shuffles through and grabs the essentials, then awaits the answer to his party's questions, perking up when breakfast is mentioned.

Narrator [Maps, handouts, pictures: Links in top of page spoiler]

"Good, ask all the questions you need to" the Sheriff replies. "Knowing what you are getting into may keep you alive, unlike those idiot adventurers that went four days ago." he muses.

"Lets see. There were three of them. They heard about the goblins because the caravan they were guarding got raided, and rather than stay with the caravan as it continued north, they decided it was more profitable to go goblin hunting. The fools probably died in the swamp, before they even got to the goblin village."

"Rumors talk about a Soggy River Monster that lives there, but no one has ever seen it, so it could be an old wives tale or not. Some folks say that locals have gone missing and it is because of the Monster, but I think they just ran away to seek adventure elsewhere."

"Anything else you need to know?"

When you leave, I need a road marching order, 2x2 and a single file order for both road and swamp. So have that in character discussion please.

"Perhaps." Saif says, taking his backpack off of his horse and taking out what he doesn't need. "Could you describe the adventurers who went out that day? Maybe remember what types of weapons or armor they were carrying around?"

Gundar watches the exchange with a bemused expression. This group is never going to leave the town, no less find the adventurers! As weapons are reached for, he decides to step in and try to cool tempers. He turns to Saif.

Noble Paladin, The path you choose is a most difficult one. You cannot expect others to walk it. You must do what you need to do in order to serve your goddess and maybe you will be an example to others. If you can redeem the goblins, this world will be all the better, but I have heard it said that those that reject redemption from Sarenrae can also expect no mercy. As Elk’lyn said, if we have to slay those un-redeeming goblins, it’s not torture or cruelty to take an ear. You do not have to participate, but do not begrudge us for earning some coin. Come and join us and try to redeem these goblins and this soggy monster thing that are preying on the innocents, but if you can’t we all will be more than happy to help you deliver Sarenrae’s justice to them. Gundar turns to the elves.

Surely we can forgive the Paladin. I am sure he meant no offense and he will be a help on the road. Since humans do not live as long as Elves and Dwarves, it takes them a little longer to learn how to play nice with others. Did that work? He anxiously looks around at everyone.

If we are all good here, I say there are adventurers that need finding, goblins that need redeeming, and those that don’t redeem need killing! Eggs that need eating What say you?

What might he do once we are alone on the road with him? How can we trust him? Tyr turns to see the sherif's reaction to all this, hisexpression states that is not going anywhere with such a mad man. Strange way to start this.

Tyr is right about that, I dont... trust him for now. It's three of us and one of him, and I want to belive in what Gundar said. He is young and inexperienced, and as you know Tyr, they always sleep more than us... Elk'lyn says the last part with an wicked smile.

With a completely amused expression on his face, Sheriff Hemlock looks over the group. Well, you all should be interesting adventuring together he says as he chuckles. The three adventures, they were just caravan guards, starting out. Two had studded leather armor, and one a chain shirt. Short swords for two of them, although one had a nice longsword at his hip.

The bemused smile leaves his face, and in a more serious note, he continues, whether you redeem the goblins or kill them is no concern to me. I and the merchant caravans just want the attacks to stop on our people. Just consider this, if you try to redeem them, and I do not think it is possible, but just in case you do, do not forget that they are fecund little rats, and while you may redeem the current generation, the next generations may not be as good as you hope.

Taking the reins for the horse, he leads it off to the town stables. You will need to pay for his care when you get back he says to Saif.

The Ulfen man who entered the room and gave the letter to Saif is certainly a bull of a human: standing nearly six-and-a-half feet tall and with most of his 230 pound frame apparently composed of muscle, he is an excellent example of the stereotypical member of the Ulfen race. He seems well-prepared for anything that may come their way as well, armored in a suit of chainmail that seems well-cared for and two weapons at least as impressively-sized as he is are carefully secured in carry harnesses across his back: one a large axe with a well-honed edge, the other a long-hafted weapon that ends with a dual-menace: one side of the head a heavy, four-pronged hammer, the other a single, sharp spike. gives a nod to the man before turning to the others.

Though perhaps he has not been spoken to before, he isn't hard to recognize as a resident of Sandpoint for several years, having first come to the town from the Lands of the Linnorm Kings six years ago when he was but fifteen years of age. On his arm is a badge that marks him as a member of Hemlock's local militia.

The gruff expression that had been on his face when he entered the Dragon disappears, replaced by a broad, friendly grin. "God dag to you, my friends!" he begins. His voice is low baritone and gruff, though not unpleasantly so. "Sheriff Hemlock says you are looking to take care of Licktoad goblin problem and need strong arm to help. Úlf has volunteered to go with you! My axe has been itching to cleave puny goblin heads! Is good to meet you, wizard Tyr and healer Gundar!"

Welcome, Úlf. It's good to have a strong arm to join us. Let's just hope he is more than a strong arm... But tell me, do you have anything against some goblin ear-cutting? Best to be sure now, else he risk another one crazy, arrorant and unpolite... Paladins tend to be hard to convive. Last one wanted to force us to belive all goblins deverved a chance, and ears could not be cut. Because it was 'cruel'.

"Many thanks! Úlf would like to know your name too, yes?" he asks, then frowns at the mention of goblin ear-cutting. He seems to consider the question for a moment before responding to Elk'lyn's question.

"Úlf definitely has problem with goblin ear-cutting! Goblin with ear cut is still danger to Sandpoint and caravans! Goblin with head cut is no danger to anybody! This is why Úlf comes with you! And once head cut, goblin won't miss ear any more, yes?"

Sorry about my manners. I'm called Elk'lyn.

"Is no problem! Is also good to meet you, Elk'lyn! Úlf is glad to call you sverd-søster for coming battle! We will bring great honor to our ancestors!"

Gundar listens to the exchange between Elk'lyn and Úlf and almost spits out the hard-boiled egg he had been chewing. From one extreme to the other! He nudges Tyr, Looks like our bar tab will soon be a lot less! He turns to the group. Úlf! I like your style! I'm ready, if you all are! Let's go find this Halfling! He drops some of Elk'lyn's hard-boiled eggs into a pouch. From an open window he sees Saif mount his horse and ride out of town. Good travels noble Paladin! May our paths will cross again.

Úlf grins to the dwarf, giving a decisive nod. "Úlf thanks you, friend Gundar! I also am ready to go! You say we go see Halfling first, though? What Halfling do we go to see?"

These goblins hide in a swamp. Tyr goes on to repeat the information the group gained from the briefing with the sheriff. So please go back and read that. :) Our halfling friend has some knowledge of the area and if we can convince him to be helpful I am confident our lives will be simplified. I do not wish to become lost in the swamp.

Úlf gives a nod at the explanation offered by Tyr. "Is good idea to go and see Proudstump, then. Úlf is ready to go whenever companions are ready!"

I think this will work, the big one seens to be good at cutting off heads. I just hope he don't end up cutting my head, is clear now. I really like the sun, but I think we should use well our travel time, and not spend it with eggs and breakfast. As our friend Gundar already said, there are adventurers that need finding, goblins that need redeeming, and those that don’t redeem need killing! she says the last part with a smile. What could have called off that fool of a paladin?
