Mage: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 121d3 ⇒ 3 Harek - Touch
Only the gods and the drow mage know why, but Kazmir, Rask and Sirasa decide that it must be bed time since they have been up all night and they slump to the ground asleep. Harek steps up and swings at the drow mage and wounds it severely. Lothalian shoots an arrow at the warrior he hit before and this time kills it. Ordrud, hurting from his wound misses the warrior in front of him.
Juriendor, seeing that three of the brave adventurers go down, runs over to Rask, muttering "sorry my son" and kicks him awake, while standing next to Sirasa to protect her.
The rogue, steps up and swings at Harek, but misses, while the warrior in front of Ordrud swings but his rapier bounces off the paladins shield. The mage launches a bolt of acid at Harek and hits him with it.

"Ye wanna run and see if I kin put this javelin 'tween yer shoulder blades? Or give up and we see if these folks feel merciful like?"
Either way, Harek hefts his axe and shield towards him.
Rask Kotri Delvedeep |
Rask quickly wakes up Sirasa and Kazmir.
"Wake up! Evil magicks has put us to sleep!"
If able he will then stand up and pick up his bow.
Ordrud |
Ordrud finally gets his footing and slashes back up under the drow's defenses. The blade caves in the dark elf's chest armor breaking ribs and drawing blood.

Kazmir, shaken by Lothalian wakes and stands quickly up, while Sirasa who was shaken by Rask, lazily wakes and stands. Harek steps up and manages to kill the spellcaster in front of him. He then turns to face the drow rogue, with a grin on his face. Rask stands and grabs his bow. Ordrud swings at the warrior and hurts it badly, but it is still standing.
The warrior continues to assault Ordrud, but it continues to just miss, while the rogue, with fear in its eyes, also continues to swing at Harek but it misses also.

Ordrud, Rask and Harek finish off the last two drow attacking the group. Looking around you see that the village militia has killed the undead and drow, or at least driven off the ones able to flee.
Mayor Leonid comes up to Juriendor, bloody but alive, "did you find the moonshard?" Juriendor replies "no, the drow made off with it before I could reach them." The mayor shakes his head, "that is not all they made off with. About fifteen villagers were captured and force marched out the north road, almost an hour ago." He then looks at you, "the militia is spent, and do not have the training for this kind of rescue mission. I know you are all tired and not ready for this, but will you go after our folks and save them?"

Lothalian Sybellus |
I for one am out of healing spells. Would it be possible for us to rest before we pick up the trail? Lothalian says as he scans the woods expecting to see drow still fleeing.
Sirasa |
"I agree. I will not be of much use to anyone if I don't get some sleep," the weary Sorceress says, then yawns. Then she sighs, "We will push on if we must."
@DM - At what point would the party become fatigued. Congrats, I have never had a DM send a PC of mine to third level without resting.
Harek Ironshirt |
"There's 15 prisoners, with an unknown number of captors. We'd be best served keeping an eye and staying close to em. If they're wounded or spent, mebbe we can sneak and peek, grab the townsfolk quick an' easy like. Worst comes, we press on til we gotta camp, then move on light and quick."
Harek Ironshirt |
"Father, I don't suppose ye have a suit of plate kicking around hereabouts, just achin' fer a new owner, eh? I kin do just fine with my chainmail, but some heavier stuff won't be missed, neither. Heck, even a breastplate or some splint mail could do good."
Ordrud |
"I agree with Rask. We should follow now and keep our distance. If we can get the spell-casters some rest that would be better. I'm ready to go, but these skeletons needs something blunt. Is there a spare weapon around here?"
Lothalian Sybellus |
Lothalian grimaces when he hears the consensus is to start the pursuit. How will I keep them safe? One bad combat... He turns to Juriendor Would you have any healing wands or potions you can spare?
He smiles at Sirasa and says, La hatha vanalia fe intha culumnia!
Kazmir Brightbeard |
Kazmir sighs audibly. The long fights had drained him, and his magic was long used up. Who knows when he would get to sleep next? he looked at Lothalian wearily, "No rest for the weary, eh?' knowing the other spellcaster would understand.
Sirasa |
Sirasa will look at Lothalian and smile, "Nasiel."
Then she will look at Kazmir and smile some more, "It appears so. I just hope our next rest isn't with our ancestors." she gives the Halfling a wink.
Harek Ironshirt |
"All this talk of sleepin' an' restin'! Ye've got bows or slings, no? No need ta use up magic when an arrow or stone'll do. And no call fer either if a bit o' sneakin' will do. Easy is best, often."
Sirasa |
Sirasa will sigh and look at Harek, "Good Dwarf. Where you go I will follow." The Shoanti woman will be ready with her Crossbow.

Juriendor responds to the requests, "nay, no armor of that sort around here, however we do have two light maces that you can have, and I have a cache of scrolls, potions and a wand that you may have."
Juriendor then turns to Mayor Leonid "Igor, let them be. It is 8 in the morning and the sun has not risen, like it should have hours ago. You also can not even see the stars. There is something terribly wrong here. You were an adventurer before settling down here. You know that the spellcasters, especially those of the wizardly arts need rest. Let them rest for a while to recover their magics. Sending them now, into the Dark Woods without being at or close to full strength will just get them killed!"
Igor looks angered for a moment, then nods simply. "He is right. Perhaps if you follow the road north a bit to make sure that it is the correct direction, then sleep to recover magics, that would be best."

Ordrud |
"Rask, you're the tracker. You make the call whether we rest now or follow some and rest. We'll be following you anyway." Ordrud suggests.
I vote rest now. Then, set out at full strength. How hard can it be to follow 15 prisoners?

Rask Kotri Delvedeep |
"You are right, Ordrud, they shouldn't be that hard to track. Let's rest now that we can, and continue after we are at full strength."
Sirasa |
Sirasa will be very thankful for a dry place to pull out her bedroll and rest. Exhausted, she sleeps well, though her dreams are troubled by the images of dark elves. She awakes covered in sweat, even in the bitter cold. She will splash some water on herself and look to the Ranger, "Let's go find this evil and eradicate it. Lead on good sir."

Everyone including most of the villagers head back into the cathedral to sleep and stand watches. Before heading in you see the sun for a brief moment, but then a black fog wipes out all rays, and just before disappearing the sun looks like it had spider legs for just a moment. The villagers pause from their healing and rebuilding as the darkness descends—its gloom eclipses both light and sound as a hush falls over Rybalka. Even the dogs and livestock are quiet.
Juriendor shows you to the acolytes quarters, "rest here for 8 hours. I will have someone wake you then. Fear not, Igor and myself along with the other adventurers that came at the start of the ceremony will keep watch till then." He leaves you to get rest and heads back down the stairs to the main temple area.
After eight hours one of the acolytes that you met on your way back up from the depths of the cathedral comes in, looking haggard. "Here are the two light maces that Juriendor promised. It is also eight hours later. Please help the villagers that were captured. My dad was among them" and he leaves to head back downstairs.

Everyone please finish leveling up.
Give me a marching order on the road.
Those without darkvision will need some kind of light as it is absolutely pitch black.
Harek Ironshirt |
Rask & myself up front, then Ordrud followed by our cssters, I'd say. Light can be carried by one of the casters, and the two dwarves can do the tracking.
"Good as new and right as rain, but what in all the hells happened to the sun? That surely is not natural, right? "
Harek breaks his fast with some hard cheese and bread, with a flagon of ale. Strapping on his armor and shield, he hoists his pack and sheathes his various weapons.
"Let's be about or business, then, eh?"
Sirasa |
Sirasa will cast Light on the front most portion of her Crossbow. "Here I am. Look at me," the big Shoanti woman shrugs. "At least they will pay attention to me first," and with that thought she goes ahead and cast Mage Armor on herself. (AC16 for 3 hours)
I would agree Rask should lead, followed closely behind by Harek then Ordrud, all ahead of the light. Then Lothalian with his low light vision, Kazmir and finally Sirasa carrying the light.
Ordrud |
Ordrud thanks the acolyte for the weapons and assures him that they will rescue his father and other villagers. Ordrud helps Harek into his armor and appreciates the help into his First Crusade banded armor. He secures one of the light maces to his weapon's belt and cleans his other weapons. He breaks his fast with his companions and spends some time quietly praying to the Inheritor.
When everyone is ready to go, so is he. He takes his place behind the dwarves. When the light spell is cast, he asks the group, "Can't you see that light for a long way in the forest? If we are tracking them, is there a way to travel without using the light until we get to combat? Just asking."
Ordrud is ready and good with the marching order.
Lothalian Sybellus |
Lothalian yawns as the acolyte wakes him up. Has it really been eight hours? he asks no one in particular. The absence of the sun unnerves the follower of Sarenrae and he says a quick prayer asking for her continued guidance.
He joins Harek as he is eating his morning meal. Looks like it will be trail rations today! Hopefully they are moving slow trying to herd fifteen prisoners. He says to the burly dwarf.
He falls in line and as Sirasa casts Light, Lothalian will do the same on the holy symbol that he wears around his neck.
"Here I am. Look at me," the big Shoanti woman shrugs. "At least they will pay attention to me first,"
First they will see this handsome elf walking in front of you! He says with a wink and chuckle at the sorceress.
"Can't you see that light for a long way in the forest? If we are tracking them, is there a way to travel without using the light until we get to combat? Just asking."
Lothalian stares into the blackness of the surrounding forrest, Unless you want a party slowed because of tripping and bruised ankles. Look on the bright side, er, pun intended, these villagers don't have dark vision so the drow must be providing them with some sort of light so we can spot them just as easily as they can spot us. If they are not using light, then they will be going that much slower and we have a better chance of catching up.

Awakened after eight hours rest, you head out the North Road from the village of Rybalka with Rask, the tracker, in the lead followed closely by Harek, Ordrud, Lothalian, Kazmir and finally with Sirasa bringing up the rear, with a light spell cast on her crossbow, as if to say to everything out there in the darkness, here I am, come get me.
After an hour on the road, the Old North Road curves to the east, but in this light that could only be a short bend, or not. Enough footprints for a small crowd remain, having churned up the dirt in the road’s turn. With no lights ahead, it’s impossible to tell how far ahead your quarry might be. It’s clear only that they were here about 10 hours ago, and that there were several of them.
Rask estimates that there were twelve villagers, and perhaps five captors based on the footprints leading into this churned up section of the road.
Next?
Notes:
Lothalian & Kazmir have low light vision. This is utter and complete darkness so they are not seeing any better than Sirasa, ie. twenty feet light, and another twenty feet dim light from the point of her crossbow.
All others have darkvision so they see sixty feet and no further.
Please everyone finish leveling and splitting the treasure up.
Also, I made an error in the treasure. The "scrolls" of ability enhancement were supposed to be potions, so anyone can use them, not just the spell casters.
Ordrud |
Ordrud follows along with the group with his longsword and heavy shield ready. He fully expects an ambush escorting the lightbringer in the middle of the dark.
I assume they are walking, so Ordrud will be concentrating on Detect Evil as a move action and Perception take 10+3=13. The character is actually unaware of the Detect Evil ability and only gets bad feelings about things if he identifies any Evil.
Ordrud won't ask for any of the treasure. He will only take anything if someone presses something into his hands. Cheers
Harek Ironshirt |
"This is strange an' b'zarre. T'ain't supposed ta be this dark outside, never. Weird."
Harek keeps his shield ready but his axe sheathed for the moment. He does keep his javelin quiver close to hand though.
Sirasa |
"This kind of darkness goes beyond the natural. It must be powerful magic." Sirasa must renew her Light about every twenty minutes. After the first twenty minutes, Sirasa's arms become tired holding up her crossbow. She shifts and cast the spell upon a silver coin going forward. She holds the coin in her right hand, the left holding the crossbow supported by her side.
