Thanks for the feedback. I caught the mistake in the timeline, but you must've aleady been responding. I'll fix the others too.

Sorry for not giving this thread enough attention over the weekend. I'm feeling indecisive about two types of character:

Petrel, a "hardy native" making his life in Grewyhawk as a burglar as part of a thieves-guild "sanctioned" crew, that feels his chance for advancement are basically zero and sees adventuring as a way to step outside guild hierarchies in hopes of a big score. In game terms he would be something like an urban ranger some rogue archetype or ninja or bard-archeologist, (something I hear is in Ultimate Combat).

Alternatively there is Skua, a Pureblooded Suel sorcerer that I imagine as the Viserys Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones. I thought this might be nice when dealing with movement issues on play by post, to have a ranged blaster. The problem I have with this guy is I don't know enough about the Suel.

Looking at the group composition so far I imagine another melee figure might work best. I could use some feedback though.

Male Human (Oerdian) (Per +2 | Fort +5 Ref +2 Will +1 | AC 26 (f24/t12) | CMD 21)

While I think you should do what you feel like playing, you did ask for input... :)

I think a fighting-thief is a pretty good idea for this group. I don't manage to play with nearly enough thieves and I'd like to see one done right for a change. Also as I plan (but who knows how it will turn out) to do a lot of tripping with my character, there may be extra opportunities for Attacks of Opportunity.

Either way with my extra reach you should get lots of flank-attack backstabs if we do it right. Once I get my shield (level 3) I'll threaten both in reach squares and close squares. Might get some armor spikes until then...

Shadow Lodge

If you don't care about traps the Knife Fighter Archetype is brutal. d8s for sneak attack instead of d6.

My main wariness with thieves is I have only seen them done wrong. No damage, can't land hits... I'll poke around the forums to look for suggestions on not sucking. Also might change the name to a different cold weather bird. :)

D30 wrote:

I've hinted before that a ranger's favored enemy is a very tasty way to achieve high damage in this campaign (a lot of humans).

I'll send you some information on the archaeologist. I'd prefer to avoid having to fit in the Ninja class. Ninjas, if you really twisted my arm, would end up as followers of Xan Yae, much like a monk would.

As for Suel, there's not a terrible amount to know. They are the palest human subrace, and part of two original empires that settled on top of the Flan natives of Oerth (the continent holding Greyhawk). Think of Oerth as Europe, and think of the Suel as "whites" and the Baklunish as "middle-easterners" who both fled into Oerth from original empires somewhere beyond impassible mountains after their war let to a cataclysm.

Suel can have any personality. You can play one who has racist tendencies, if so desired. They have a bit of a reputation for being elitist and snobbish. You can also play one as a lovable commoner. Ethnicity will play more of a factor for how certain NPCs judge you versus influence any prescribed way you "have to" play a character.

As far as personality I like the sound of both. Your take on how to disposition yourself with the Thieves Guild is great, since it opens you up to join the other PCs for old-school adventuring. Dropping a name like Varys for a concept is also very tasty, although a defining part of Varys is the motivation to better the realm. The areas you will be in would be like being on the wrong side of the Narrow Sea (like being in Pentos, Meereen and the Dothraki Sea versus being in a King's Landing environment).

Looking forward to your choice...

D30 wrote:

I suspect a High Dex dual-knife-wielding rogue using the new archetype will be a monster at both hitting and doing damage, with an 18+ Dex and Weapon Focus. Good synergy with Doruk's continuously prone adversaries.

Who is the party's likely "face"? Martigan?

Thanks DM_Panic. I'll write up some characterization for the rogue-like character when I get back from gaming tonight.

Second time playing the Quar miniature game.

In fixing my traits I took one of the +2 initiative traits, so I'm actually +3. In regards to clothing, Aralynn is wearing simple, but durable clothing in earth tones.

Female Half-Elf Monk (Zen Archer) 1

The first level of Zen Archer will be painful at times, but it picks up quickly.

Level
1 - +1 Dex to hit with longbow - Flurry 0/0
2 - +4 (Dex & BAB + weapon foucs + masterwork weapon)- Flurry +4/+4
3 - +8 (4 Wis instead of Dex, 2 BAB, weapon focus, +1 or masterwork weapon) - Flurry +9/+9

Yet I still get tempted by a last minute change to ranger for a few more HP, skill points, starting gold and a full BAB. The character story only changes a little. And I want to try something new and don't want an animal companion. Hmmm. What in the world am I doing?

OK.

My goal would probably be to set up the first posts for you guys either tomorrow night or Thursday morning once I settle into my vacation.

I have the Shield Lands vignette basically ready to go, just waiting for the 3 PCs to be completed.

Are you double-dipping BAB on the flurry of arrows? The modified BAB is included in the monk table.

Two weapon fighting with bab as monk level...
3rd: -2/-2 two weapon, + 3 monk level for bab, + 4 wisdom, +1 weapon focus, +1 item = +7/+7.
At fourth, +8/+8 or use a ki for +8/+8/+8 ... should be pretty good!

D30 wrote:

You are correct sir on the double-dip.

I can see your hesitation though... At 1st level, firing at an AC15 creature with allies in the way means needing a 19+ to hit (or a natural 20 with a flurry) on the monk.

I have my notes on a basic ranger I considered for a PbP a few weeks back, 18 Dex and 1st=PB+Rapid, 2nd=Precise, 3rd=WFocus

--snip--
1st: +5 or +3/+3 rapid [+7, +5/5 vs Fave En]
2nd: +7 or +5/+5 rapid [+9, +7/7 vs Fave En]
3rd: +9 or +7/+7 rapid [+11, +9/9 vs Fave En]
--snip--

The zen archer looks to start being competitive at 3rd when it's flurry matches the rapid shot against non-FEs.

Having only a 12 Dex for the first 2 levels is rough, since as you know there's not much on deck in your first 20 "fights" below AC15.

You could consider 17Wis/16Dex/12Str instead of a 19Wis/12Dex/14Str and possibly pick up Weapon Focus at 1st to make it more palatable (so you have +4 to hit instead of +1) if you are getting stuck on "crunch".

Male Human Rogue 4: Knife Master, Sanctified Rogue

Petrelis a "hardy native" making his life in Grewyhawk as part of a thieves-guild "sanctioned" crew. He feels his chance for advancement are basically zero and sees adventuring as a way to step outside guild hierarchies in hopes of a big score.

Character built out though I can't get the skills section to format correctly

Shadow Lodge

Sorry for the delay on my part, I'll have time tonight to get my character finished with an alias and posted up here.

Human Cleric of Pelor 4

Alias created, sheet uploaded, appearance and backstory forthcoming. Mercenary company sounds good to me.

Male Human (Oerdian) (Per +2 | Fort +5 Ref +2 Will +1 | AC 26 (f24/t12) | CMD 21)

Doruk is 5'11" with short dark hair and dark eyes. He has a heavy beard which he keeps as smooth shaven as he can. You have the rest of his stats correct as far as I can tell. :)

Argh! Missed that. Haven't played a monk before and somehow glanced over that in the flurry of blows description. Since the table was following it's own logic I thought it was separate from BAB.

With the Ranger, I don't get Precise until 2nd level and finally Rapid Shot at 3rd unless I change to human, which completely changes the character.

Turmoil in my head. Ah!!!

Weapon Focus comes free to Zen Archer at 2nd level. Maybe I just give up and go back to ranger. Also, Aralynn is turning out to have an anti-monk personality which I'm not sure I'll play well in the roleplay.
I'll decide by tonight.

I think I'll just stick it out with Zen Archer and see what happens. If it helps at all, the personality is based a bit on the female Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica. A spitfire to start, but growing more thoughtful as time passes.

The early poor performance followed by a dramatic jump at 3rd level as she begins to understand the universe was forseen and part of the character choice. I'll likely keep the stats as is.

So the correct numbers starting from -2/-2/-7 are likely:

1 - 0/0 (+1 BAB,+1 DEX)
2 - 3/3 (+2 BAB, +1 DEX, +1 MW/Magic, +1 Weapon Focus)
3 - 7/7 (+3 BAB, +4 WIS, +1 MW/Magic, +1 Weapon Focus)
4 - 9/9 (+4 BAB, +5 WIS, +1 MW/Magic, +1 Weapon Focus)
5 - 10/10 (+5 BAB, +5 WIS, +1 MW/Magic, +1 Weapon Focus)
6 - 11/11/6 (+6 BAB, +5 WIS, +1 MW/Magic, +1 Weapon Foucs)

I'll also pick up Point Blank Master, Ki, and Weapon Specialization, which the Ranger doesn't.

Last thought, might want to switch the 14 from STR to DEX to qualify for Deadly Aim. I won't be picking up a +2 composite bow early anyway and it'll help with the to hit early.

I will finalize the paperwork tonight, but otherwise ready to go.

DM Panic wrote:

Even with the 9 CHA, Aralynn has the best diplomacy at +5. Combined with profession: soldier at +8, I think it makes it me until we go to an opera or fancy dinner party.

I'm also happy to let someone else be the formal leader and I can be the smart-ass assistant who actually makes sense.

Human Cleric of Pelor 4

First draft here, may need to swap out my shield for a light so I can still cast while armed.

Background:

Martigan has been know as the Sun-Touched since birth. The God Pelor chose him for service since he was born, and showed his favor by giving the young Martigan a sun shaped birthmark on the palm of his left hand. Growing to adulthood in the kingdom of <insert kingdom here>, Martigan was raised on tales of brave knights and pure clerics, heroes of Pelor and other good deities who sought out evil and purged it.

An accident at the temple of Pelor in Axeport saw Martigan disgraced and cast out of school. Not knowing where to go but feeling his destiny could not be thwarted by an alchemy professor and his tone deaf cat, Martigan signed on with the Sons of Sand in their recruiting drive as a healer.

At 5'8", Martigan stands a little taller than average. His brown hair and eyes marks him as a <insert racial subgroup here>, and he never wears his left gauntlet in order to fully utilize the power of Pelor that flows through him. Having experienced months of war with the Sons of Sand and their derision at his faith, Martigan has almost reached the end of his sanity and time with this particular mercenary band.

Female Half-Elf Monk (Zen Archer) 1

Think I'm done and the final initiative was +4.

Male Human Rogue 4: Knife Master, Sanctified Rogue

Remember I need to pick 2 traits.

Martigan the Sun-Touched wrote:

Stick in Nyrond, or even the Free City of Greyhawk and you're returning there. Up to you. Nyrond and Furyondy would have knight's tales, but Furyondy would be biased towards Heironeous (Silfr's god!).

Martigan the Sun-Touched wrote:
An accident at the temple of Pelor in Axeport...

Unfortunately no real sizable temple here. Let's call it a shrine, it has maybe 1 priest and 1 acolyte and 600 square feet of worship space. :)

Martigan the Sun-Touched wrote:

I'd say either pick Oerdian (think of them as Germanic). Or you can go Flan (think of them as Native American indians) if you want a vibe like that. Or pick "mutt".

Petrel wrote:

Looks like you're working on these traits and your starting gear, still.

Your background feat would mean you are either a native Oerdian (think norse/viking like a Golarion Ulfen). Or you are a native Flan (think Native American). NPCs will likely refer to you as the "Flan" or the "Northerner" given how strong your bloodline is with this feat.

Aralynn Huntinghawk wrote:

How about gear and left-over gold?

You all get to use average cash for your class (or more if it comes with a feat or trait).

Hey! All my traits mesh and I didn't even bother to explore the option of asking about Rich Parents so I could start with a masterwork composite bow and keep the campaign trait for the +2 to my perception.

@ DM Panic - Done shopping.

Shopping done. Believe character is complete... might make a tiny adjustment after picking up ultimate combat today, but doubt it.

OK, it appears everyone is done with shopping as well as all others parts of character creation.

I actually changed my mind about running your vignettes and wanted to get all five of you roleplaying with each other sooner rather than later.

Since my time is a little spotty over my weekend getaway, this felt better to get you guys adventuring.

I made some assumptions on what your characters would be willing to do, and where they are going, but I hope it's all for the best.

The game thread is up!

Petrel wrote:
Are the coins minted with a face or image on one or both sides?

One side contains a face - likely of Zagyg the archmage and demigod for most coins. The other side has a hawk or a historical building within greyhawk.

Petrel wrote:

Yes, feel free.

Petrel wrote:

Yes, you can pick Thieves Cant as a language. It's somewhat universal, if you can use the cant in Greyhawk, you'll be able to use it with thieves in other city's, but likely they'll spot some variances in your gestures.

Lack of coordination and a stinginess with feats I imagine. I think it's a great feat. Combined with Combat Reflexes and you have a lot of damage that can be done.

@DM Panic: How about I'll stop cheating and not use flurry of blows without my bow again if you'll tell me whether or not my bow is peace bound in anyway?

Yes, bows and crossbows would be subjecting to peacebonding laws as well.

I haven't been able to dig up how things are technically peacebonded while on vacation, but assume that your quiver has a cord tied around your arrows binding them tightly together. Until this cord is removed (a full round action), you can't get an arrow drawn.

How are you firing 3 arrows? I thought it was a full round action to flurry?

EDIT: Nevermind. I see now a surprise round AND round 1. Nicely done sir!

I thought it was worth mentioning...

The last time I ran this adventure, one of the PCs died to the three stirges.

It was 3.5e and he was playing a Hexblade who saw the glinting horseshoe and let the other members of the group move along ahead of him into the house. Hanging back, he seized his treasure as 3 stirges swept down to feast on him.

IIRC, two hit the first round and drained 10 Con (two rolls of 5). The PC only had a 10 Con and thus perished alone, outside.

I'm amazed to see what a breeze it was with the party all together!
