Between the Echo Wood and the broad expanse of the West Sellen River stands a resolute stronghold of law and order: the walled town of Fort Inevitable. From its stern keep, companies of Hellknights ride forth to enforce the strict laws of their commander and bring authority to the unclaimed lands of the Crusader Road.

While the taxes imposed by the town’s rulers are heavy and the laws inflexible, no one can deny that prosperity has followed the Hellknights’ establishment of hard justice in this small corner of the River Kingdoms. Merchants, travelers, and adventurers journeying on the Crusader Road find that Fort Inevitable provides a rare island of safety in an otherwise lawless land—so long as one is careful not to run afoul of the Hellknights’ laws.

Fort Inevitable is a small town, with about 960 residents, mostly human. It stands as your main point of selling and purchasing equipment for your forays into the Emerald Spire.

It was here that you met your fellow Pathfinders to pursue the orders that compromise one of your first assignments for the Pathfinder Society - which is a large one:

Explore and report on the contents of the Emerald Spire.

Six miles northeast of Fort Inevitable lies one of the deepest and strangest dungeons to be found anywhere in the lands of the Inner Sea—the Emerald Spire. Like an iceberg, this weird structure shows only a small portion of itself above the surface; level upon level of hidden vaults and mysterious crypts lie buried deep below the ground. Few of the people living in Fort Inevitable or the surrounding lands have even the slightest inkling of the dungeon’s true extent, let alone its astounding age.

Standing in a wide clearing within the Echo Wood, the Emerald Spire is the ruin of a large Azlanti tower that appears to be made of green glass harder than stone. The upper portions of the tower were destroyed long ago, leaving broken, halfmelted glass blocks lying jumbled around the tower’s perimeter and the ground nearby. The site is well known to locals from both Fort Inevitable and Thornkeep, and many travelers passing through the Crusader Road area make the trek into the forest to look on the ruins—from a safe distance.

The Spire’s ruins are known to be infested with dangerous monsters, and the surroundings attract an unhealthy number of bandits, raiders, and hungry predators.

Feel free to check in and introduce your characters. I'll be waiting until all the PCs are free from any PFS games before continuing, but we can get started with intros and your party setting its rough "stategy" for exploring the spire.

A masked human woman chuckles as she passes through the gates into Fort Inevitable. "Inevitable. Such hubris."

Checking on her longbow, she nods and turns to the side, talking to an unknown presence. "The trip was expensive, but I had to get away from him for a while."

As she meets with all of you, she bows in greeting. "Call me Charis. The Maiden of Cooper is a bit more theatrical than I'm ready for right now."

A handsome halfling listens to the exchange between Charis and Tog for a moment before entering into it. "I can't say I have much experience with Abadar's temples, but I admire those that have taken the gods to heart."

Holding up a hand, he draws back a sleeve to display a birthmark upon his forearm that resembles an ankh with angelic wings. "I was called to service by the Dawnflower."

He carries a spear and is dressed in blue and gold and armored in leather, decorated with polished brass studs in the shape of small suns.

"My name is Sigil."

Johann looks with bemused admiration at the gates and walls of Fort Inevitable. "Well, this hard-scrabble people seem to have really carved out a niche for themselves..." As he spots the growing group of Pathfinders, he makes a beeline to them.

"Hail and well-met! I am Johann Van Hjorder, servant of Iomedae, Lady of Valor." He offers a firm handshake to everyone. "Ah, Tog is it? It is marvelous to meet another devotee to one of the pantheon. Abadar is certainly worthy of devotion in every sense that Iomedae is." His eyes catch Sigil's birthmark. "Marvelous! I dare say we shall be the most blessed of any group of Pathfinders."

He turns to Charis, "Ah madam, who might you worship?"

"Stupendous!" Johann exclaims with a wide smile. "I think we'll have quite the time. Boy, these hellknights seem to run a pretty tight ship around here. Can't say I've ever run across them before - though I've heard stories."

"My goodness!" he spots the double-axe that Tog carries. "That is quite the weapon. I dare say just brandishing such weapon would scare off anyone foolish enough to cross you, eh Tog?"

A graceful, dark halfling saunters toward the group. She moves her hands slightly, like she is listening to music no one else can her.

"Hello, this must be the place. Pathfinders? Right? OK, it looks like I am with you. To be honest, I am new to this Pathfinder thing - I didn't even get to do my Confirmation. They said I needed to mvoe quick if I wanted to join this expedition, so quick I was! I am happy to meet you all and delighted to be an explorer today!"

She does a quick twirl, and shows off her flowing skirts.

"So, how do we start? Oh, how rude of me to not even introduce myself! My name is Zora, from the Magda family. I am skilled in, well, all sorts of things I suppose. But I see you all look like great warriors! So I think it is best to leave the heavy lifting to you, no?"

And... we begin!

The stone staircase that led up to the tower’s door is now nothing more than a rubble-strewn cliff.

On the tower’s south side, a dirt path winds up the steep embankment to a pitch-black doorway.

Map Link now available near the header of the thread.

I've placed folks in a rough marching order on the dirt path, feel free to let me know if you prefer an alternative to it. Alternatively you can climb up the rubble-strewn cliff, but from your vantage point it looks like it may go to the same chamber within as the dirt path.

Johann begins to advance up the path, paying little heed to sneaking, but keeping his eyes open for signs of danger.

Sure enough, in looking for danger, everyone soons finds what they are looking for.

A goblin atop a mangy dog lets out a shrill whistle before shaking his shortbow in your direction and shouting in broken Common.

"Hey! You no supposed to be here!"

Johann can just barely make out a crude barricade to the east of the goblin standing in the room above him.
