Kheled uses a bit of Pharasmas power to enhance Pherenike's aim.

Guidance on her.

Sovereign Court

Pherenike cries out as the beetle's mandibles painfully pinch her leg. Dropping her bow, she unsheathes her falchion and brings it down heavily on the vermin, seeking to separate its biting jaws from its thorax.

Free action: drop bow; move action: draw falchion; attack (IC, guidance) 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 1 + 1 = 24+1 for higher ground? damage (IC) 2d4 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (4, 1) + 6 + 1 = 12

Can't 5-foot-step back with Kheled moving up to use the touch spell, but if that drops the beetle, Mus'ad can move through Pherenike's space to attack -- after the Professor looses his bolt to avoid the shooting-into-melee penalty. ;)

Round 2

Myron missed and moved back while Kheled moved into his spot and bolstered the young woman as she battled the insect. Her falchion sliced down and tore straight through, splashing gore upon the stairs as the second beetle was dispatched.

I am going to rule that given the Professor's position (15' back) compared to that of the beetle's (in W6) on the stairs (roughly 5' lower than the floor) and being small sized etc, that Ahkenaten does not have line of effect to it. I will keep his action as a readied action and use his above rolls if triggered.

Mus'ad can come off delay if he wishes...

Mus'ad stays where he stands. Pherenike's skills with the falchion far outstrip his own with his hammer and interceding in front of her would likely only further expose the difference.

Sigh... and Kheled's following to grant a simple +1 means that the front line of a single person has to be maintained. Recommence thumb twiddling for another round.

Sovereign Court

Back to Aerathiel then. Does he have line of effect on the beetle down the stairs, or will he have to wait for it to move up a square?

As the lead beetle charges up the stairs and into view, both Aerathiel and Ahkenaten let loose their readied missiles. The acid once again flies true, burning the lead beetle but not stopping it. The Professor's arrow narrowly misses as he has to pull his aim at the last moment due to Pherenike's position. At the same time the last beetle takes to the air and flies up to attack high while the other attacks low...

Kheled places another Guidance on Pherenike then backs away.

Sovereign Court

Barely able to suppress a shudder at the oversized bug so near her head, Pherenike disregards the one at her feet to focus on getting the flying one out of the air. After cutting viciously at the airborne beetle with her falchion, she takes a step back to avoid the rain of ichor and fragments of carapace.

Round 3

Myron waited for a chance to strike while Kheled bolstered Pherenike again before moving back to clear some space for her. She wasted little time, demolishing the flying bug before stepping back herself, trying to goad the remaining beetle into range of Mus'ad's waiting hammer...

Mus'ad's readied action is enough to kill the last beetle before it gets to attack. We can drop out of combat. (Unless the Aerathiel or Ahkenaten want to go for the kill steal.) :)

Do you wish to continue pounding on the secret door or go through the double doors in the other room?

Sovereign Court

Assuming we're out of combat...

Pherenike sits down heavily on a relatively bug-entrail-free step and massages her sore calf where it was pinched by the beetle, while waiting to see which way the Professor wants to go next.

As far as the Professor was concerned, nothing had changed. He stood waiting for Mus'ad to get the door open.

Perhaps a crowbar? he offered.

Bashing it down might be harder than just forcing it open with assisted strength check.

Male Dwarf (Pahmet) Ranger (Warden / Trapper) 2

Mus'ad looks to the crowbar, then to Pherenike "Your arms stronger than Mus'ads. You try, Mus'ad will help."

Mus'ad would prefer the higher strength mod on the bar, and himself relegated to assisting.

Sovereign Court

Pherenike frowns, unsure if it's a compliment or an insult to a lady to be called stronger than a dwarf. Having reduced the pain in her leg to a twinge, she gets back to her feet and applies herself to the crowbar, with the Pahmet adding his leverage to the end.

Assume we can take 20 as we'll keep trying until either we succeed or it becomes clear it's pointless? She has a +4.

I can add +1 for guidance as well.

Waiting for the more physically inclined members of their group to see what they can do about opening the door, Aerathiel simply stands close to the Professor. Speaking softly, he muses, "I do so hope we do not get to meet too many more of those large bugs. Still, it is always nice to put my magic to good use."

Even using the crowbar, Mus'ad and Pherenike found the door to be a formidable foe. After much grunting and straining they finally managed to force it open.

Behind the door is a narrow passageway. In contrast to the rest of the tomb, this rough earthen passage is not lined with masonry. At various points along the tunnel, sections of the walls have crumbled, as the mining beetles small tunnels weakened the walls and they have subsequently collapsed in spots.

Picking your way through the rubble and after a couple of bends you arrive at another door. This one an exact copy of the one you broke open, but this time you are on the non secret side. With the locking mechanism in plain sight, Mus'ad opened the second door and stepped out into another wide hallway of masonry lined walls. To his right was a set of double doors. Straight ahead was a set of stairs descending to yet another set of double doors.

The group paused to decide their next step...

With a little info with which to form a decision, I will leave the choice up to you.

Male Dwarf (Pahmet) Ranger (Warden / Trapper) 2

Aristedes pondered the Dwarf's question.

It would suggest to me that perhaps we have found an entrance to another tomb entirely. The architects; or someone post-construction- wanted the two linked. This intrigues me. Shall we press on?

"Or perhaps this Akhentepi fellow wanted his real tomb hidden away, in case folks like us came by. Either way, I'm confident that using these secret passages is saving us no small amount of grief. I would reckon that the fancy double doors in the room we just came from leads into the same area as the doors on our right here. So by that reasoning, I suggest we take the stairs down, and see what it is they felt like hiding away."

Male Dwarf (Pahmet) Ranger (Warden / Trapper) 2

Mus'ad shakes his head before unsheathing his hammer and using the handle to poke at the wall of the passage loosening earth "People who built first tomb used stone for all walls, but here is earth. I don't think same people." before shrugging "Any way down is good as any"

Male Osirian Oracle (Life) FC 4 HP:34 AC:15 INIT:+1 PERC:+3 F/R/W:+3/+2/+4

Kheled's breath quickened in anticipation, but he has little to add to the discussion, either direction was a good as the next for him.

Stairs down seem fine.

Taking a moment to grant himself the ability to see magical auras like before, Aerathiel motions for the more physically resilient and martially capable members of the group to lead the way, the elven mage preferring the relative safety of staying towards the back of the marching formation. "By all means then, down it is. This is all becoming curiouser and curiouser, if I may so."

Ignoring the near doors that Myron suspected lead back the way they had already explored, the group descended the stairs. Mus'ad determined that the doors were neither locked nor trapped as far as he could tell. Pushing the doors open revealed a room 25' square holding several neatly arrayed chests, boxes, and urns. The dust of centuries covers every surface.

A search of the room reveals that none of the chests and boxes in the room are locked. Most of the goods in the chests, such as once-fine clothing and sealed jars of food, no longer have any value after the passage of centuries, but among the spoiled and ruined grave goods are several salvageable items of value, including two vials of silversheen, a masterwork longbow, 10 cold iron arrows, a gold scarab clasp, an onyx and silver holy symbol of Pharasma, a silver hand mirror, and a wax-sealed clay urn of nard.
