"Foolish girl!" Kaibuninsho's voice calls out from somewhere to the north. "They are much stronger than you led me to believe. This entire farce is for naught... such a waste." You hear a sharp whistle signal, and the few remaining unconfused ninja start to retreat.


Black Moth screams in rage and frustration. "You cowards! There's more at stake here than your worthless lives!" She shakes her head and gives a familiar shrug. "As always, I'll have to do it myself." She casts a spell, spawning several mirror images of herself, then flies up and over the group, setting down beside Ameiko.

"No, Matsumata-san, I will not fall for that," Kaibuninsho responds, finally, and you hear no more from his direction.

Parity heads towards north towards the origin of the last words, climbing on air steps to reach the roof top and using Suishen's power to see the invisible. From the roof, he spies Kaibunisho hugging the outside of the temple walls and moving east. The ninja master notices Parity looking at him and starts to run.

If you otherwise ignore them, the remaining confused ninja will eventually flee.

Going to declare an End of Combat! but a chase is now on against Kaibuninsho. I want to build a Chase challenge, since there's no map, and I think they're pretty fun. Give me a day or two to come up with something cool! =D


Parity sees Kaibuninsho run through a postern gate, slamming it shut behind him. He reaches it a few moments later, finding it locked.

Temple Chase:
The chase is on! We will use the Pathfinder Chase rules (linked in the previous post). It is assumed everyone is under the effects of haste, which is essentially negated by Kaibuninsho's ki speed. Still, your slight speed advantage gives a +2 bonus to all checks. Air walk and flying help, but most of the chase is through buildings and around obstacles. The cards with asterisks are ones where you can take advantage of flight, giving another +5 to your check on that card, or you can substitute in a Fly DC 25 check.

Moving with speed and grace, Heng finds an open gap on the far side of the temple wall and dives through. He spies Kaibuninsho for a moment before he turns a corner. When Heng gets there, he finds a four-way intersection.

Parity struggles with the lock for a moment before Harlan arrives and casts his spell, shaping the stone away from the portal. With a simple push, the door falls open. Parity, Harlan and Kiyomi move in to a cluttered tunnel.

Heng and Kiyomi close in on Kaibuninsho, seeing the ninja's shadow a second before he disappears around a corner. With nimble moves, they cut the distance between in half. The corridor opens into another garden, decorated with a koi pond, cherry trees, and a maze of privacy walls. Kaibuninsho dives and cuts across the pond easily, but his foot catches as he scales a wall, holding him up briefly.

Parity and Harlan move down the corridor, coming to the four-way intersection.

Unfortunately, Kiyomi's paralyzing spell has no apparent effect on the ninja.

Seeing Heng close on his heels, Kaibuninsho sprints as fast as he can go. With a nimble leap, he catches the ledge on a small shrine and hops through the attic window. You hear a bit of a crash as his landing turns out less graceful than his climb.

Harlan points out the path to Parity, only to see him already on it. The halfling quickly moves in the direction Heng and Kiyomi took, only to despair when he sees the koi pond.

Kiyomi grabs Harlan and Parity, and dimension doors to the same spot the Ninja is!


Given that Kiyomi cannot see Kaibuninsho nor predict exactly where he is, I'll let the dimension door work to skip her (with Harlan and Parity) one card forward, but not all the way to where he or Heng are.

Parity and Harlan find the correct path through the inner temple and step out into the garden. Kiyomi grabs them and teleports all three up to the abandoned shrine's attic, where she last saw Kaibuninsho and Heng disappear.

Heng bounds forward, bypassing the attic and going straight for the rooftop. With uncanny speed, he crosses the rooftop to the only obvious exit - a rooftop window. Kaibuninsho appears on the roof a moment later, skidding to a halt when he sees Heng blocking the path in front of him.

"How?!" he exclaims, then shakes his head. "If you wish to die today, so be it!" He throws a bead to the ground and disappears in a burst of gray smoke.

Heng has the initiative action, but Kaibuninsho is invisible. The others will still have to reach the rooftop to engage.
