Harlan fires off another rapid-fire volley, striking his foe with two, and Parity struggles to hit her, but manages to connect on a backswing. The manananggal howls and retreats, withdrawing into one of the manor's doors.

Heng pummels the second undead with righteous flurry, landing several powerful blows. On the fourth hit, the manananggal crumbles into dust with a hiss.

You chase the fleeing manananggal into the manor courtyard, Heng leading, Parity slowed by spell casting, and Harlan limping up behind. She flies into a small apartment. When you reach the doorway, you see the creature re-attaching itself to its lower half, resting on a futon in the corner. The organs and entrails slither and twine in grotesque fashion.

Parity follows in, slashing Suishen down and cleaving the creature apart. The upper body thrashes, trying to escape Heng's clutch. A quick follow-up strike, and she too crumbles into dust.

You can hear angry screeches and howls to the north and west, getting closer.

If there are no objections, you can regroup a few hundred yards east of the manor. The fear effect wears off on Malnival, Kiyomi and Skygni after about a minute. You can find the others (who are visible) heading your direction pretty quickly.

Alright, I'm back...

Regrouped, you skirt the manor at a distance, circling the island around to the western side. As you travel, the screeching from the vicinity of the manor house cease, returning the night to silence.

Nearing the outer walls, all remains still.

Darkvision/Low-light Vision:
As you near the outer walls, you catch sight of four more manananggals, hovering in the dark sky about fifty feet above the manor. They likewise see you, but make no move yet.

Heng shrugs. "If the point of coming around to the back was to catch them off guard, we have obviously failed. We may as well try the front again and fight if they try to stop us again."

The manananggal continue to watch you from their flying perch as you circle and enter the manor again, this time through the front gate on the north side. The courtyard remains empty but for weeds and wind-blown debris. A brick oven lies in the corner to the north-east. On the west wall is a set of stables -- the doors are open wide, empty but for stacks of moldy hay.

The main building has no doors, per se, but you enter easily through the sliding shoji rice paper panels. Inside is a wood-floored hallway surrounding a large central reception room -- two panels have been left open before you, and warm light glows from within provided by a lantern hanging in the center of the ceiling. The walls are more shoji screens, decorated with pictographs and calligraphy.

The reception room floors are tatami mats, similar to those you saw in the tea house in Sakakabe. A traditional four-legged shogi-ban table stands in the center of the room. with two pillows for players to sit upon and two small side tables for captured pieces.

When Heng places the piece on the board, you hear the soft sound of a shoji panel sliding open, and the figure of a dark-clad, middle-aged man with a long mustache and beard and wearing a tall courtiers cap emerges from the shadows of the corridor. The man bows politely to you, then indicates the shogi table with one long-nailed hand. "As you can see, one side is winning the game. But is it the King or the Jade General?"

Harlan:
You detect strong illusionary magic coming from the shogi-ban. When the man appears, he to appears to be an illusion.
