Koya's got scroll and potion manufacturing and Mal has arms and armor. I'll see if there's a potion I might could use, but my wants list is in the wondrous items camp.

Heng is exceedingly grateful to Kiyomi for her guidance in caring for the little Kami tree. He insists the newcomer join his teas with Koya where they might learn more about her homeland and culture.

Kiyomi smiles and nods to Ameiko. "Yes, my... Ameiko. I play the harp mostly, but I am familiar with many stringed instruments. This harp," She removes her beloved harp, "has been a companion of mine in dire times. It was given to me by a dear friend, and it has a magic of its own. I regret to say that I used to foment discord among the citizens at times." Kiyomi smiles and blushes. "I once used it to convince a local governor that nudity was the new fashion. He was a cruel man and it gave the people hope to see him humbled."

Ameiko smiles, letting out a chuckle. "I can imagine that is a pretty funny story. I have some mediocre skill on the samisen. My mother taught me the basics when I was very young... she loved to play, and would while away the evenings filling our home with ambient melodies. I wanted nothing to do with it, of course." She pauses a moment, her smile fading into a wistful grin. "It wasn't until she passed away, years later, that I took it up again. It seemed a way to honor her memory."

"Once I felt comfortable with it, I'd play some nights at my tavern. I can't say if the patrons liked it or not -- they're used to ditties and chants and the like -- but no one complained. I know only a few songs, really. Would you be willing to teach me some, well... more modern ones?"

Ameiko's smile widens and as Kiyomi settles into the melody, she hums along, marking the notes and meter to memory. Miyaro stands by, watching intently. Drawn by the music, others pause in their work to join the audience. For a few minutes, time seems to slow in the forest, all listening to the song and story until Kiyomi brings it to an end.

"Thank you so very much," Ameiko applauds, her eyes glistening. "My mother used to sing like that... I've never been able to match the tone, the peculiar Tian inflections, since I grew up so far away from the source."

"Kiyomi, I have a song that haunts me since we entered these woods perhaps you know it..." Heng then proceeds to sing as best his ability the ghost tune that possesses him.

Heng:

Monsoon!
Date: 18 Pharast 4712

It becomes clear that you are finally nearing the edge of the Forest of Spirits while you are still a few days away. The trees begin to break up as clearings become more and more common and interlinked. Soon, the only trees are those in tangled dark copses, like islands surrounded by a sea of budding grass.

For the first time in a month, you again catch glimpses of the horizon, but what it reveals is ominous. On this afternoon, a line of dark clouds rises from the southern horizon, starting as a gray blur until you can make out the nearing thunderheads. Many lightning strikes flash through the shadowed plains beneath the approaching storm.

Several of the Tian refugees are visibly agitated by the storm. You catch worried mutters of the word 'monsoon'.

Monsoon!

The preparations go quickly and when everything is ready, the storm remains an hour or more away, giving you time to shore up, double-check and wait. The winds pick up steadily, whipping through the trees in violent gusts. As the front passes, you can feel the air's humidity and temperature rise significantly.

Then the monsoon hits with a downpour of rain that looks like a dark gray sheet as it nears. The initial blast of wind hits like a hammer, rocking wagons and trees alike. Thunder roars in a steady, continuous rumble as lighting arcs across the clouds and to the ground. A nearby tree creaks and comes crashing down, landing on top of one of the new wagons.

The monsoon rages for hours and hours, and although there are occasional breaks in the furor, it quickly resumes a few minutes after. The heavy rain soaks everything and turns the ground into a sodden mess. You have to shout to be heard over the howling wind and thunderclaps, so most everyone remains huddled and silent.

Nearly a full day later, the last storm cell passes by. Over the next hour, the rain and wind steadily slackens as the clouds lighten. A quick assessment of the damage shows that the caravan suffered a few hits -- the fallen tree, a lightning strike, and one wagon blown over -- but nothing unrepairable. Happily, your stores and livestock are intact.

In the aftermath, however, a headcount reveals that seven of the refugees are missing...

The search pattern takes about an hour and spreads nearly a quarter-mile out before Skygni finally catches a scent. Nestled into a culde sac on the leeward side of a small rise he finds a number of muddy footprints. They head in the general direction of a large copse of trees another quarter-mile away.

The wolf leads you across the field of mud and sodden grass to the edge of the small wood. The copse is a thick tangle of low shrubs, obscured by a thick vine canopy overhead. Most of the plants are still without leaves, but they remain congested enough to block vision beyond a few yards.

"The tracks lead within." Skygni sniffs the air a few times before exhaling forcefully. "There is something within. Natural, but like nothing I've ever scented before."

Within the copse, the thick canopy blocks out most of the afternoon sun, leaving the interior a latticework of dark shadows that continuously shift with the wind. Skygni leads the way through the clutching undergrowth and into the heart of the wood. The chill air grows slightly warmer and more humid as you progress, and your nostrils scent a strange tang.

The odor is most powerful as you start to make out a massive tree, just over thirty paces ahead through the tangle. The base of its trunk is easily ten feet thick, and the lower branches as thick as trees in their own right. The extent of its height and span are lost in the canopy. The tangy air gives you each a heady feeling, narrowing your vision and filling its edges with sparking motes.
