Melianthe flies back up and latches the grappling hook securely to the catwalk. Segang immediately starts to climb, easily reaching the top. Absinthe goes up the wall, moving more slowly and quietly. Seren hides and Cherias buffs Segang defensively.

As Segang finishes his climb and pulls up onto the catwalk, he emerges entirely from the haze. The two archers are slow to notice, but when they do they shout an alarm. "Up here! One of them climbed up somehow!" They immediately turn their aim on the Shoanti.

Segang can see everything out of the haze now. Absinthe is halfway up and will need another climb round to reach the top.

Seren -- will the haze drop immediately, or how many more rounds will it last?

Thanks! I edited my post above.

Segang charges and smashes the Gray Maiden archer. Even though her armor staves off a mortal blow, the hit leaves behind a telling dent.

Gray Maiden 4 longsword vs Segang: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19; Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Gray Maiden 3 longbow vs Segang: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 - 4 = 18; Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

She staggers a moment before dropping the bow and drawing steel. She lunges with an attack, drawing her blade along Segang's arm. Across the catwalks, the second archer lets fly at Segang, clipping him off the back.

Absinthe completes her slow, stealthy climb, but finds both enemies are too far away to reach an easy flanking position. (You are now atop the catwalk, but still in stealth... focused on Segang, neither Gray Maiden takes notice of you)

Melianthe flies to the edge of the haze and blasts the Gray Maidens on the ground floor with a cloud of brilliant sparkles.

GM1 Will save vs Melianthe's glitterdust: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13 ... fail, blinded.
GM2 Will save vs Melianthe's glitterdust: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9... fail, blinded.

"Argh! The elf is a witch!"

Cherias starts his summoning spell, while Seren moves to the foyer entrance. He looks around for a piece of furniture, but finds only cots nearby. He grabs the nearest empty one and throws it up as a feeble barricade.

I am not sure if my current hit points are right. Please correct me if they are not. On Cherias' last turn Segang would have healed 5 from the life link up to 76. He then took 9 and 5 points but 7 and 3 got past his DR for a total of 10. And 5 of that was transferred by the Shield Other spell. This puts him back at 71, right?

@ Segang: You can only use fortune once, so you don't have to make the extra rolls any more.

I understood that was why Mel was cackling, to extend Fortune. No?

I believe she stopped cackling last round, but Fortune only works once per 24 hours. You can save it as long as she's cackling, but once you spend it, its done... at least, that's how I read it. Let me know if I'm doing it wrong.

So, 'benefit from' means 'be under the effects of the hex', not 'utilize the hex', if that makes sense. So, you get to 'utilize' the 'benefit' each round the hex is in play--i.e., if you do Fortune + Cackle, that's Fortune for two rounds. At 8th level, you get an extra round for free--it wouldn't be that awesome if you got something for 2 rounds but could only use it once. See this thread and a reply from Jason Buhlman. No FAQ, though.

Cackle + Fortune RAW

Yeah, JB's "clarification" is not how I would have interpreted the RAW, but we can go with that. Note, since Melianthe moved and cast a spell last round, she was not cackling.

M Human (Shoanti) Barbarian (Urban) HP 132/159,(Rage HP=189) l DR 5/10 Nonlethal and Resist Fire 3: INIT +2, Perc. +13, AC 22/T:14/FF:18, Saves= Fort+13/16, Ref +7, Will +7/+12 with rage

Roger that. No more Fortune.

Segang's follow-up attack strikes the Gray Maiden hard on the shoulder plate. You hear a dull crunch, and she collapses. Her senseless body rolls off the side of the catwalk, falling to the main floor twenty feet below. A loud crash announces her fatal landing.

"You horser bastard!" the second archer screams, drawing arrow and sending another at Segang. Her rage spoils the aim, and the missile flies well wide.

GM3 longbow vs Segang: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Absinthe takes advantage of the woman's distraction, moving around the catwalk and sniping with her crossbow. The bolt flies true but clips off her thick armor, doing minimal damage.

Segang can move your 40 feet -- up to you if you want to roll clockwise or counter.

OK, as of this post Segang had 7 damage and Cherias had 6. Then on cherias's next turn, which was delayed, Segang would have healed 5 and Cherias would have taken 5. So Segang was at 2 damage and Cherias is at 11. At that point, Segang has Shield Other affecting him. Segang takes 6 damage after DR, 3 of which goes to Cherias, and 2 damage after DR, 1 of which goes to Cherias. So at that point, Segang was at 6 damage, Cherias was at 15, and then 5 comes off Segang to Cherias, so Segang is at 1 and Cherias is at 20. I assume the attack against Melianthe hit, so at the beginning of his next turn Cherias will complete his summoning spell and then take 5 damage off Melianthe, who will be at 3 damage and Cherias will be at 25. Does that all seem right? Did anyone else get hurt that I forgot?

Oh, oh. I think I'm in trouble now.

Cherias casts shield of faith on himself and moves back into the haze. In Celestial, he calls out to Seren.

Celestial:
"Seren, how much longer does this haze last? And where's the rope?"

Maybe if I cast Bull's Strength on myself I can climb up the rope to the catwalk.

"It should last for 24 seconds after I stopped concentrating ... to be exact. We've burned through half of that. The rope is a the north end of the haze. I can't see where you're at, but it should be near where I hear you from."

That would be four rounds total ... 2 rounds hits at my next action. And I'm guessing on the rope ... I don't actually know where Mel put that up!

I can't see the map, so not sure if the 2 clouds obscure line of sight from the options Seren has for movement. So anything within 3 squares that gives line of sight, he will take

In the interest of keeping things moving, I expanded the cloud size from its original center point... that will block LoS for Seren. Any changes to your posted input?

EDIT: I also added an orange marker where the rope is hung.

Yes ... I assume I can climb in the haze up the wall to the south of me to get to the catwalk?

If so ...

Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Cherias calls a defensive blessing on himself and retreats into the haze. Seren moves to the nearest wall and climbs up to the catwalk.

Up there, he sees Segang clobber the Gray Maiden with a solid hit. She roars in pain, and manages to parry the barbarian's follow-through. She retaliates with a powerful strike of her own.

GM3 longsword vs Segang (PA): 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 8 - 1 = 19; Damage: 1d8 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 3 + 2 = 7
Hit? I'm not sure what Segang's current AC is. Note Cherias is out of range for shield other.

On the ground floor, the other two Gray Maidens gasp for air as they escape the stinking cloud. Together, they move to a door on the north wall and throw it open. The lead rushes through.
