The third largest city in Varisia, Riddleport is also the most notorious. It is here that the machinations of an ancient race, once again boil up out of the Darklands and into the light. The sinister plots of the subterranean underwriters manifest!
"The spellcaster!" Ethaniel yells, not caring whether or not the man was responsible for the flash of light.
It may have been him. It may not have been. But if he is calling upon magics to combat a simple cutpurse, he does not use his power well.
Ethaniel makes a whip attack from his current square, assuming the spellcaster is the icon in W15. This is nonlethal damage, and it will be negated if the caster is wearing any armor.
Whip attack - 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
If it hits, it deals 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 points of nonlethal damage.
An enthralling female voice rings out over the crowd.

Two other men raise their heads, draw swords and spin away from their table, their eyes scanning the crowd. One moves toward one of the bouncers guarding the chest who is obviously blinded.
The drunk, changes his focus to the one who just lashed a whip at him. He steps into base with you and reaches out to touch you. The words of a spell leaving his lips as he focuses intently on you.

Roll a Fort Save vs DC13 or become Fatigued for 2 rounds.
Fatigue:
Fatigued: A fatigued character can neither run nor charge and takes a –2 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. Doing anything that would normally cause fatigue causes the fatigued character to become exhausted. After 8 hours of complete rest, fatigued characters are no longer fatigued.
One of the thieves land a hard hitting blow on the senior bouncer who audibly splutters up a cough from the impact. The other misses his attempt to hit, still content to both use fists rather than weapons. All the guards join the fist fight now. Stepping in to keep in base with the thieves.
Having heard Valius's call and the woman (apparently the leader) make her speech, Marcus has to trust the guards superior numbers against these to idiots would win through. He calls out to the guards:
You men handle this, I've got the trouble in the hall.
He looks at Ascaria, who is apparently on thier side and some sort of magician, You, wizard-woman, you're with me. Samson, Heel.
He takes a double move to R15, pointing to Valius along the way Samson, Guard ValiusSamson is in O15 in Guard mode, he will stay by Valius's side and attack anyone who threatens his masters friend
Once in place, he shouts a challenge back at the woman, hoping to rally the bouncers and any able patrons to fight

The grim-looking human with the dog dashes to the gambling floor, his pet at his heels. Ascaria is still not sure what is going on here, but something is going on and she does not like it one bit. For now, the human seems to be one of the more desirable companions in this damn hole so Ascaria decides to stick to him. However, some precautions seem to be in order.
Action: Cast mage armor and then follow Marcus carefully to L16.

Can I choose a target instead? What happens when they move? If not I'll target squares I15, I16, J14, J15, J16, J17, K14, K15, K16, K17, L15, L16.
To clarify, did you wish to hold the spell until someone makes an aggressive action toward you. Just asking because the sleep is a 10ft radius burst effect and the co-ords you have given me have no hostiles there at the moment so i can only reasonably assume your have a Prepared Action. All creatures in the burst, either pass or fail immediately. So if you wish to hold the spell until someone hostile comes your way or if you wish to cast it now, then if you give me the center point of the blast i can work with that. Cheers Isca
The caster near the privates suites entrance once again adds to the panic and chaos. He casts a spell and an enormous Web 20ft radius spreads across almost half the gaming floor. Then he moves toward his other companions with a wicked grin upon his face. All the other attendees are Blind and now Grappled by the web.
Reflex Save vs DC15 please Marcus & Samson and Valius. Also Valius, you take a -4 to this check due to your Blinded condition.
Web:
Web creates a many-layered mass of strong, sticky strands. These strands trap those caught in them. The strands are similar to spiderwebs but far larger and tougher. These masses must be anchored to two or more solid and diametrically opposed points or else the web collapses upon itself and disappears. Creatures caught within a web become grappled by the sticky fibers. Attacking a creature in a web doesn’t cause you to become grappled. Anyone in the effect’s area when the spell is cast must make a Reflex save. If this save succeeds, the creature is inside the web but is otherwise unaffected. If the save fails, the creature gains the grappled condition, but can break free by making a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as a standard action against the DC of this spell. The entire area of the web is considered difficult terrain. Anyone moving through the webs must make a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as part of their move action, with a DC equal to the spell’s DC. Creatures that fail lose their movement and become grappled in the first square of webbing that they enter. If you have at least 5 feet of web between you and an opponent, it provides cover. If you have at least 20 feet of web between you, it provides total cover.
Just checking if you are aware that the caster you are opting to attack is not the one doing all these spells. Yes, true he has attempted to touch you with a spell and cast on Tippy, but it would be more accurate to describe W16 target as drunk or adept. He is in no way associated with these other folks.
I am aware of that, but Ethaniel isn't necessarily. He felt something was very wrong, and his solution (however strange) was to let chaos erupt and thus bring the tournament to an end. He chose to escalate the encounter, and thought he'd help Tippy in the process. In doing that, he noticed he was fighting a spellcaster, who then wielded magic against him at the same time as a burst of light exploded in the room; unsure of the source, he thinks it best to incapacitate the spellcaster. For now, he is planning to neutralize that "threat" with nonlethal force before fleeing or assisting in whatever else is going on. The nearby web somewhat forces the issue, I imagine, but he won't wade into that with an enemy spellcaster at his back, no matter how innocuous that spellcaster might be.
Your whip attack does hit the drunk again and this attack renders the man unconscious. He falls to the floor and the only movement you notice is his continued breathing.

Actually Sleep has a 1 round casting time, rather than a full round action. I believe I'll aim it at the start of my next turn? I'm a little shaky on the details, so correct me if I'm wrong here. Also I hadn't realised the others had moved into the radius. My bad! Could I drop the spell mid-casting?
The red headed female (wearing an eye patch over her left eye) refocuses her intent on the only bouncer in the room that did not get blinded by her companions spell and who is moving to confront the new threats. She begins casting a spell upon him. Her companions make attacks on their target. One already in base to base with Ethaniel lashes out with swords but attempts to instead knock the sense out of you with the pommels. His companion steps up to you and also attempts the same style of attacks. Any damage is nonlethal.
You are quite correct. Having started casting it in the last round, you either drop it and loose it or choose your target area and unleash it on your next turn.
As you are the only remaining characters in the bar area this is directed mainly at you both. One of the thieves assailing the senior bouncer draws his weapons out of desperation. He slashes his target hoping to take him out of the combat.
The other thief in the bar area looks slightly shocked but never-the-less, turns to engage the next bouncer on his tail. Draws his short swords and attacks with the pommels.
Marcus takes a deep breath, sets his feet and tears at the annoying webs holding him. He is able to free himself and move to the closest free area he sees, mounting the stage and moving to support the guard and whip wielding ally who are being attacked.
(steps out of web to s14, which has part of the stage in it, the way is clear but he'd need to step up so I'm hoping you would allow the move but stepping up would cost an extra 5ft, total move to u15)
He yells another challenge at the woman,
Is that all you got One-Eye? Ha!
You make the CMB versus the Grapple as a standard action which leaves you still with a move action. It costs double movement to leave a web square plus another 5ft to move up onto the stage. It all calculates fine to have you end up in U,15.
In one of your previous spoilers i mentioned something specific to you about the other caster due to your perception result. You may have missed that.
That's right. I still think Ethaniel would have attacked the drunk because he was casting spells at Tippy. I feel a bit adrift finding a way to attach my chaotic neutral character to the party, but I don't think an unexpected affinity for the halfling is too far out there. In the end, Ethaniel was trying to distract the drunk, but once the drunk attacked him, he was obligated to incapacitate his foe before turning his attention to the more threatening spellcaster. He will spend subsequent rounds focused on her and her minions.
Question: How does the stage (S, T, U, 12, 13, 14) affect movement? I know it cost Marcus an extra 5 feet to get up there. Is it difficult terrain?
You do hear two spell casters. Both a male and female voice coming from the other side of the room. The female is still in the process of casting however so it would be easier for you to move toward that sound.
I would classify it as difficult terrain rather than make anyone make an Acrobatics as it isn't overly high. That is of course as long as you are making standard movements and not running and jumping. There is the chest of 10000sp at the center point of that podium however which does block movement.

Iscarel's chanting grows harsher and more frustrated over the noise of the brawl behuind him. He scans his eyes across the chaos of the gambling hall, eyes darting to and fro and ears twitching in agitation.
"Enough!" he spits, turning and unleashing his spell. (Centered in F 24, DC 13, should reachh all of the bouncers and the brawlers. I'll take the rest of my action once they've made their saves, but if any of the thugs save I'll make a charge attack against them.)
Have you put your weapon away or are you groping around feeling your way through the room with weapon in hand? Half speed, double move and squeezing through one square gets you to V,12
Yes, this is your last round of blinded state. You need to make a Reflex Save vs the Web spell effect DC15 as requested above. This interrupts your loading of crossbow unless you pass by 5 or more.
Nope, no-one has made any action against you. The entry and exit from this room is completely blocked. You most immediate threat are the thieves in the bar area but they are currently occupied.
That was 4HD of targets all sent to slumber. Nice work. The only one awake is in the far corner. Because the senior guard is Helpless he doesn't affect a charge attempt. However, you don't have a weapon out, nor can you draw one as part of the charge due to your BAB+0. Are you going to Unarmed Strike him?

Ascaria loosens the sling from her belt and loads it. Assuming that the spellcasting woman with the eye patch is the one that announced the robbery, Ascaria aims carefully at her. Then she lets fly...
You run directly into one of bouncers as you attempt to continue your move. As he is Blinded anyone moving into his space is considered hostile and he has an AoO at you but you have total cover.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 vs your Flatfooted AC less a further 2 which should be 12.
If that hits, here is is miss chance roll and damage.
Miss Chance 1d100 ⇒ 29, 51 or higher will be a hit.
Damage 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 nonlethal.
The male who has been menacing everyone with his casting begins casting another spell. (Spellcraft check anyone able)

So both bouncers fall to the ground immediately, snoring a second after they reach the floor. The red head smiles as the bouncers fall to the ground, then she moves closer to the door.
Having not found an online game available at this point in time I have considered attempting to GM the Second Darkness AP with PF conversions.
I will be eventually running this AP for my actual RP group once we complete Legacy of Fire. I have GM'd in social 3.5 and PF with my relaxed RP group.
I have not had much experience with pbp so anyone who can give me some advice about tackling as a GM please feel free to do so.
Also, expressions of interest would be great too. Kicking off at lvl 1 of course and i would be aiming to post nightly.
Interested in getting to use my crossbowman. And playing in all the different APs - so win win. :)
Loving the quick expressions of interests. Lets see how long it takes to get 2-3 more then i will get down to the finer details and discussion about kickoff and session timing.
Just stopping by to drop in my 'best wishes' to a fellow Aussie; there's a few of us on here, and a few threads for Aussie gamers and events.
You from Syd?
Cheers Shifty, I'm up in Brisbane actually. Thanks for the well wishes. This is what you got to do if you cant get social games consistently. I am hoping this is enough to keep me sated.
Sydneysider here. Very interested! Will get to work on a character.
Am off uni until march, too. So I'll have plenty of time. I'm also keen to use maptools. I've run my first (and at the moment only) campaign over it, and I'd love to use it as a player! I'd be interested in playing an elf, gnome or a dwarf, as my GM's homebrew world has neither. I'm interested in playing a Bard, Rogue, Magus or some kind of Cyphermage, depending on the group makeup.
And a paizocon, huh? That's news to me. Brisbane get all of the fun. :P
I'm keen
Click on the Avatar to see Calain Heartstriker, My invulnerable Rager for legacy of fire.
What books are available? PF only, in which case I'd submit Calain.
If 3.5 PHB2 allowed, I'd submit a Rolibar's Gambit Two Weapon Warrior.
Welcome aboard Calain. Pure PF as i need to convert this to PF for my live RP group. Well, i can now start on the Mapping and the campaign thread. Will see what i can get done by tomorrow night.
Anyone going to access the Players Companion? I have a copy but the spanner in the works is i cant share photocopies from here.
It should be free on the Paizo site, I believe.
I'd take a look at some of the PbP games on the boards and see if we can't make the format work (or use maptools for resolving combats only once per week or something). It just occured to me that it's a lot easier to promise a couple of forum posts a day than it is being able to jump on maptools every week. I might have to sit on the fence for now.
I'm willing to throw my hat in the ring although I'm not from Australia. :-) I'm new to the Messageboards here at Paizo but I've played my share of PF live and on other boards.
Never used MapTools either. Does it support PBP?
If you're willing to have me, I'll play Ascaria the witch.

Okay. Will do away with MapTools then and proceed with grid overlay mapping system. I have chosen to use Flickr to share pics so if you aren't already signed up for it, probably beneficial to do so now.
Okay, firstly, I have always taken a relaxed approach to gaming. I am not a rule wizard and I am still learning much about the Campaign Setting and formalities of online play relevant to my responsibilities as GM on Paizo. That being said... I am working on it all concurrently.

Ensure you have vital stats clarified and your back story refined.
I am attempting to produce a copy of the PF Companion and post it to the Flickr Group album at this time. Just trying to achieve a decent compression / quality.
Player Companion now uploaded to Flickr. I have read that i can share my companion with my group alone without copyright problems, so please don't replicate it other than for use in this campaign.
I am ShagGrenade on Flikr. Pleased to see the Inner Sea Worldguide on that list. Have statted an elf and a gnome and can't make a decision, will keep at it!
I'll alter Calian's Backstory from Legacy of Fire and Change his Finding Haleen Trait.
Not sure if you looked. No dramas with him wielding a Nodachi for a Weapon? It's a Martial so he is proficient (will have a fluff reason as well- he took it from a visiting gladiator champion he killed in the arena.)

Yes Cal, i did read your back story and that's exactly as i would have suggested, eg. You were trained in your chosen weapons use as a gladiator.
I couldn't find STR Ranger on Flickr so not sure if you intended for me to take that as your Flickr user name or not.

I only registered just now.
Username is: STR Ranger
so not sure if I did something wrong. I log on and it says 'signed in as STR Ranger.
Also very sorry. I'd like to offer Marcus Whiteshae for the game instead of Calain Hearstriker (as he's playing in Legacy of fire and I don't wanna confuse the games.)
Basically he's gonna be as per my Ranger TWF Handbook (not sure if you have seen it in the advice threads) gonna be a Scimitar/Kukri TWF'er with Wolf animal companion.
I can still bring Calain here if you prefer, but I'd rather not have the same Char in 2 games.
Here is Tippy Fullbottle, originally made for an Age of Worms game set in Falcon Hollow, but he relocates to Riddleport easily enough. He's in trouble with some criminal elements (they get all upset when you shiv one of them), so he needs a place to hideout and some money to get out of town quickly - both good reasons to sell his soul to a gambling tournament. He wasn't quite built to your specifications, but those are easily changed along with the backstory names.
Edit: backstory changed, but need to redo stats from the 30-point buy he started with. Will do those ASAP, but Hallowe'en tonight.
Sorry STR but i search for STR Ranger on Flickr and it says no matches. No idea what you may have done on account options for me to not find you. Try search for me Waife_the_BiPolar.
I don't mind at all having a character switch, we havent kicked off yet so still time to change up.
Can you send me a link to the Ranger TWF Handbook please? I dont mind as long as it is sanctioned by Paizo/Pathfinder.
Hey, just popping in to wish you luck Mr DM. I won't read along with this one, since you're planning on running it with me and the boys in real life sometime. Hoping you guys all enjoy this, your GM is pretty good at what he does.

If it's not to late to express interest, I'd like to put forth a half-elf cleric of Calistra. He'd be a capable healer, but I'd like to build him as a whip-using controller type (likely taking a 1-level fighter dip at second level). He would do almost no damage, but would provide good support and control.
I am in a very different time zone (Pacific Standard Time, United States), so that might prove an obstacle, but I am a regular poster if you're willing to work around that.

I am happy to accept you if you are able to post regularly. I haven't run any pbp so i am not sure what adversity arises from having different time zones in the mix.
Your inclusion would round out numbers to 6 which i can balance for and when the other two submit there characters i will close off the recruitment.

Hows your toon coming along WDwolfy?
Here's what I've strung together so far. There's no stat block in my profile yet as I'm doing this for the first time here. Not much to reuse ;)
I think Ascaria can fill the healer role quite nicely and add some magic to our offensive, too. Have a look at her backstory and see if you like it.
I currently run two play-by-post games on these boards, and my players are from a wide range of time zones. I've become accustomed to different people posting at different times, but as long as it's regular, things move along. I simply thought I would broach the subject it since you mentioned Australia in your thread title.
I will try to get a background and some crunch worked up in the next day or two. I've been eager to give Second Darkness a go!

Your back story is charming in its simplicity and i love the final line... they call me witch.
My elf bard is on his way, sorry about the wait. I'm curious if I'd be able to be an ex-Shin'Rakorath from the faction guide? I'm pretty sure they play a part in this campaign. I've managed to spoil that particular nugget for myself, at least. Let me know if that's out of bounds or not.
I think a bard, witch and cleric complement each other pretty well as spell-casters. Though there might be some overlap, they are all very versatile.
I should state the the character I am envisioning will be able to hang in melee from first level on, but he will often prefer to use his whip for tripping (much later, grappling) and his melee touch abilities (from the Luck and Chaos domains).

Twigs:
Being a highly secretive society, i see a problem being an ex member. This leads to reasons why Elves would be excluded from the faction after having being accepted. I would have to say that age would be one reason to retire from active faction membership. Forcible denouncement from the faction due to behavioral and contrary methodology. I dont believe simply leaving the faction would be common as suspicion may grow about the true reason behind the change. I will suggest that perhaps a senior close family member gave you indications he may have been in the faction and that you wish to perhaps join. Opportunity will arise in time to do so with me aware that you have an interest in this method of development.
It's just a discussion handbook I made on Google Docs on how to effectively TWF. Alot of People on the Advice boards have a mad hate on for TWF and I disagree.
Mostly it will just let you know the rough build and tactics I plan on using with this guy.

** spoiler omitted **
Works for me. My bard is built, but I need to work out gear (and likely make a few changes, possibly the name) Backstory and description are coming, but I envision him as a caustic misanthrope, channeling his past failures into bitterness, and his considerable talents into occuping a barstool and singing for cheap wine.
I've always thought elves made some of the best glorious bastards, so I've been waiting for a chance like this to try my hand at it.
Stat crunch has now been updated to reflect 20 point buy, and inclusion of a campaign trait. Will redo equipment soon.
Question: is there anything PF content anywhere that would work for the classic dagger-blade-in-the-boot-tip gimmick?
Answer: Blade boot in adventurer's armory .. swift action activate, use as off-hand weapon 1d3(s) 1d4(m) 20/ x2 crit ... treat all terrain as difficult while extended (and difficult becomes impassable)...full round to retract blade.
If you're still having issues with Flickr, you can always try using photobucket. It's free. Once you upload the images (which takes about a minute), you click on the tab that says dirct link. This gives you a cut and past url line that you can use with the url function of this website and direct link to your posts. Everyone can see them then. Since you're using map tools DM Waife, you can use that programme to follow the action and update in posts, then printscreen and upload as needed.
url works like
(url=http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad279/wrath8/staglordslow-11.jpg) map link (/url)
Except you replace the curve bracks ( ) with square brackets [ ]
