The third largest city in Varisia, Riddleport is also the most notorious. It is here that the machinations of an ancient race, once again boil up out of the Darklands and into the light. The sinister plots of the subterranean underwriters manifest!

If you really want, then fine. But your the one paying the bills so am I to take it your fine with me offering him a job? With his Exotic heritage and fearsome looks he'd be a great starting Champion for the pit. Consider, would the stupid drunks who watch wanna see animals fighting or if Challengers are able to knock off The Goblin's Demon Champion. Matches could be bare fisted or with weapons, blindfolded etc, use your imagination. Hells, we could even offer a prize if he's beaten and run bets on the outcome. If he chooses the pit I would offer a contract for fights either to knockout, submission or third blood. No killing or we'll not find challengers. And If he's eventually beaten, we simply offer the job to the new champ. He is an impressive warrior though, more than capable of handling any of the dregs who'd come to watch.
Marcus then considers the Tieflings possible response,

Or we can simply hire as another bouncer, again, his appearence would have a good impact on intimidating patrons, but his value as a fighter would be greater, I think. I can do threats just fine, but it's probably best to use the stick AND have a carrot ready as well.
If either of those offers suits you, what can I offer as pay? For the Pit I'd think a permanent room, and a fee per match and access to female company would be a minimum. He'd have to live like a fighter though, eat well and train. There's a monk coming tonight who could help with that by the way.

He pauses again, considering his approach, Marcus might lack for academic knowledge but he was perceptive, For the questioning, I'd simply find out if that really was a mugging or was directed by someone. If he was working for someone and doesn't take our offer, we give him to the Gendarmes or maybe just remove his right thumb so he never picks up a weapon with that hand again and let him go.
What do you think?

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Fighter (Cad) 1

Ethaniel wipes a kerchief across this forehead. Hot. I need a glass of water. The half-elf stands and walks to the bar, conscious of keeping his balance. "Water, please."

Ethaniel glances up at Marcus's speech as he waits for his glass of water. He has a head for this business, but he keeps his heart in it, doesn't he? Can a man living this life be a good man?

Male Human DM/32

Ethaniel:
You still feel ill but nothing debilitating as yet.

Male Human DM/32

Saul, "I know this is not to your liking but you only need attend the next event in the pit and see how much people are willing to bet on a desperate ravenous animal. Lets see how this new demonic blood does against the reigning pit champion and if he does win, he will win back a little of his life by making the choice to fight on or go to the gendarmes. Look at that, it pretty much worked itself out."

Saul smiles broadly as though a large coin purse had just fallen into his hand.

"Now, where's Bojask and Hans. I must have them prepare for the new recruit trials. Good work young man, nicely done."

Male Human DM/32

The rest of the afternoon goes by and apart from Ethaniel feeling under the weather, Larur setting aside some time to talk with Grumm and Bojask and Hans talking about the trial, little else of note occurs. Just prior to dusk, the prospective bouncers start arriving and each are ushered to the bar to await the others. This is also part of the trial, seeing if any request alcohol prior to the trial, as those with dependencies need not apply. They are all relatively prompt and on-time. There's Andrezi the runner, Madie the Monk, John 'Darlin' the tough and Panril & Horrim the ex-Absalomian Guardsmen. They are taken below to the pit after an initial welcome and run down of the trial given by Hans whilst Bojask stayed quietly aside.

@Ethaniel

Madie looks to you and says, "I am here on your word and trust, do I go below or should I go with my instincts here, or are you to accompany us below?"

Male Human DM/32

You all have a fair idea that Saul is looking forward to this trial, as he's had a spring in his step most of the afternoon after you all returned from the Lub. Most likely, he is already below, awaiting this private show.

Male Half-Elf Wild Stalker 7

Ninja'd by DM. Can we say this plays out before the recruits arrive. I had him down here as soon as Saul finished speaking. I'll need Iscarel for this interaction as well. Anyone else can come down if they like
Marcus grits his teeth at Saul's twisting of his plan for the Tiefling. The option had been simple, fight willingly or go to the authorities. Saul had added another layer in that the Tiefling would have to fight for his life against a desperate animal just to have the choice. Ifhe proved less the fighter that Marcus said he was the Tiefling would die.
Marcus believed he was up to the task and maybe so did Saul, but it left him sick to the stomach.
"That's it you bastard, just keep fu¢{!ng pushing me

He goes to the bar and orders 2 shots and downs both in quick succession. He then roughly grabs the rousing Tiefling by the scruff and drags his ar$e down to the pit and throws him in. Onthe way he calls to Iscarel, in his poor elven

Elven:
You comin, Silvertongue or not?

He felt angry with Saul for twisting his intent, with himself for bringing the Tiefling here and for even caring. He was a demonsprog. Spawn of the creatures that wiped out everything he knew. So why did this bother him so much? Having chucked the still manacled Tiefling in the pit he enters with him and lets his anger play out a bit on the man. To the Tieflings credit he takes the beating with defiance and growls and shows alot of heart. Many kicks later he sits him on his backside against the wall and begins his questions, looking to Iscarel to to most of the talking.

You have 1 fu¢{!ng chance to get through this. If you do MAYBE we'll see if your demon spawned hide wants to live.

How can a GM say no to this. It's gold. No problem. It affects Saul's plan in no way. I shall sit silent a while. [i]Intimidate Succeeds due to the beating making him almost helpful for a time.

Although Ascaria suggested to put the tiefling into Saul's service, she feels like she does not have the stomach to take part in the 'questioning'. Trusting Marcus and Iscarel to see this through, she decides to go shopping a bit. Her head was still abuzz from the spellcasting and she wanted to get a new outfit anyway now that she had a little gold in her purse. A little fresh air (without the stench of Lubbertown) and a visit to the markets would do her good.

She leaves Blacky in her room and tells the others about her plans and that she intends to be back for the trials.

I do not intend to play this out but she'll get the rest of her shopping list now.

"You're very pushy, elf friend, even for a human. I'll humour you for now, but the wasp lives to sting again, lest he be crushed underfoot." he says, clutching the holy-symbol at his breast.

As Marcus yells at the prisoner, Iscarel remains silent, apparently examining his nails. "How much do you value your face?" he asks, nonchalantly, before leaning in close, his voice seething with malice. "Do you know what this is, demon? This is dracolisk acid. Following a few paces behind Iscarel and Marcus, Ethaniel pauses to catch his breath a moment in the stairwell. What damnable thing afflicts me? He blinks hard and continues after the others.

The half-elf watches the interrogation impassively. He carefully uncoils his whip in anticipation of what the tiefling might say. I'm ready to do this the hard way, if need be.

Tippy heads down with Ethaniel to watch the interrogation, shouting encouragement as Marcus beats on the tiefling, complimenting him on his hooks and jabs. When Iscarel makes his play, he adds, "Nah! His face is already ugly enough. There are far more interesting places for that sort of acid than his face. Far more, important places." The halfling's eyes flick from the man's face, down, and back up again so quick he almost missed it.

Marcus sits in front of the cowed Tiefling. So how about it? You gonna tell.is why a well trained, well equipped and cashed up fighter decides to team up with some junkies for a 'robbery' in broad daylight, in an area where most are hardup scraping two coppers together?
Make your answer a good one, we killed all the others and kept you cause I figured you were the smart one. Prove me right and you may earn the right to fight for your life in a fair contest.

He waits for an answer.
I'll see what he says and we'll need sense motives to see if we belive him. If we like his answer, Iscarel can you pitch him the Pitfighter job? You're more likely to land it

Male Human DM/32

The tiefling replies, "The reason is simple and you would already know as I am stripped bare of everything. Coin and lots of it, so what where it came from, I dabbled in Pesh but I am no fool to let it carry my senses away to desperate strains. Snuffy was my path to the coin and all we did was recruit daft fools, pesh them up and jump anyone who could provide us with more coin. We drove the druggos with the hits of Pesh and we kept almost all the profit and split it almost down the line. It really aint nothing to me to be here. I'm use to starting from the bottom, feels like home sometimes." He gives you a evil grin and licks the blood from the corner of his mouth. You got your ass kicked again, because I don't appreciate demon pi$$ who try to kill me just for.a coin purse. You better hope the owner of this place likes your answer or you won't get the chance to work your way up anything.

Marcus looks to Iscarel, waiting to see if the elf accepts the tiefling's words. If he does, he'll give the elf to make the pit fighter or Bouncer job offers

Iscarel's eyes glimmer at the Tiefling's last comment. "Ta naa vanima, naa ta il? I'gandele en delotha?" Ho pelekt'uva thar lye er obelet ho..." he breaks into a warm laughter. "By the Savoured Sting, I've not laughed like that in a long time. I like you, tiefling. Ordinarily, I'd kill you, but perhaps we can work together again."

Elvish:
"I would like some wine, I think. And a tale from you, Marcus."

He clasps his hand on Marcus' shoulder. "Ah... amin irma fion, amin nowa. Ar i'narn tuulo'lle, Marcus." he says, making his way up the stairs with a spring in his step.

Male Half-Elf Wild Stalker 7

Marcus, acknowledges Iscarels remark and watches the elf leave. He turns back to the Tiefling, all anger gone from his face.
Fair? ...how about honest then, Tiefling. I regret bringing you here. I should have let you die or survive where we left you. I had intended to make you fair offer. That intention has been changed for me. You Will fight in this pit against the beast who currently champions it. Lose and you will die. Win and you will have only earned your life but not your freedom. Win and you can choose to go to the Gendarmes, where my employer will likely see you imprisoned for your slight against his men or worse. OR you can choose to remain here and be Champion of this pit. You will live a fighters existence. Spartan conditions and constant training, but victory will bring you coins if that is what you are still seeking.

Marcus turns and begins to leave the cage, stopping to turn once more to the Tiefling,
I am sorry Tiefling. Win tomorrow and if you choose to stay, I will see about getting you that flail back. A champion deserves a worthy weapon.

He returns to the bar to find Iscarel already into the wine.

Elven:
It seems I owe you another apology. I needed you before so I called, but I was furious at Saul at the time, hence my temper. I'm not sure I can stomach working for Saul much longer, for it seems what little positive work I try to do here is forever denied by fate or twisted by that scum. If this continues I will either leave, pay be damned or Saul will force my hand. I am not some blind thug, none of us are

Male Human DM/32

@Ethaniel

Your sense motive reveals he may have slightly lied about not being dependant on Pesh.

@Iscarel/Marcus

"Pit fighting! Mind kind of sport. That Zincher wouldn't have me in his arena. Bloody fool. This is my kind of game, I am happy to fight the current champion and take his title and blood."

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Fighter (Cad) 1

After a hard look at the tiefling, Ethaniel wraps his whip once again and heads up the stairs. A moment later, he pulls up a stool two down from Marcus and Iscarel. "The demonsprog, did you mark how he twitched and brought his eyes to the floor when he spoke of Pesh? He said he 'dabbled,' but what does that mean? To my eye, it seems he'd as readily use some as speak of it." He turns to the bar and raises a hand. "Something hot, I think. Tea, if you've got it. And thanks."

Ethaniel chuckles, almost to himself. "Can't say you're wrong about revenge, Iscarel. If he gets the chance to have at one of us, he'll take it. Perhaps I was a fool to let him be healed, but perhaps Calistria willed it. She has an eager student in the demonsprog."

Male Half-Elf Wild Stalker 7

As long as he's here, WE control his supply. He can be weaned off it very slowly if anyone cares. More likely Saul will use it to 'motivate' him to victory and maybe throw the odd fight when the odds get too short. As for revenge, if that Beastmaster who calls himself a Ranger has any sense, he'll treat him like a proper Gladiator. Train all day, sleep in a cell and coin or a night with a whore when he wins. Hells, the Tiefling seemed to like the idea.

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Fighter (Cad) 1

"That he did. That he did." Or maybe he was just talking tough. Ethaniel turns from Marcus and sips his tea quietly How different is this tiefling from me? Slave to the some gang leader, as I was to Henri. What if I'd been nabbed on some business of his? What would I say if Marcus's boots were cracking my ribs? Probably anything...

Male Human DM/32

As you are leaving to head back up, the grunting of a pig draws your attention. Two cells over from the Tieflings is a cage holding a very big boar. It's body bulky and muscly, scars cover its entire body. It's tusks are razor sharp, purposefully made so by human hands. This animal is broken, in survival mode and hostile toward anyone but those who feed it. The sight fills you with sadness, even though they are beasts long hunted in the wild, something about such a magnificent specimen being caged in such small and unnatural surrounds fills any kind hearted person with anger. You all know Marcus deems to put a stop to this tasteless sport and you might very well feel more compelled to assist having seem the boars eyes watching you cautiously.
Larur comes to you once you return upstairs and says,
"You need to go out immediately to deliver some letters of invitation. Saul wants some of his high rollers to come and view the bouncer trials and the fight between Pigsaw and the Tiefling. He knows it's last moment but as the boss wishes."

Male Half-Elf Wild Stalker 7

@Tippy, If you're right about his character, and I think you might be, then he's the correct replacement and good riddance to him

@Larur, That's unusual, you mean Saul intends to 'trial' his new bouncers by using them for bets on the opening night?

Male Human DM/32

@Marcus

Larur replies "You misunderstand Marcus. The trial is this evening and we reopen tomorrow night. My understanding is this is merely show for those who have been regulars. Think of it as dinner and a show type of entertainment. There is no formal betting open tonight but side bets may occur and Saul is probably expecting some. Saul see's opportunity in everything. He is a tenacious man which is good for a man who has lost all that he once was. I can understand his thought processes, it is a smart business decision to keep his high rollers feeling especially appreciated."

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Fighter (Cad) 1

Ethaniel takes a stack of invitations from Larur. He regards the dwarf warily. "Are we permitted to watch the trials? I have told one of the recruits that I would make my best effort to do so."

Male Human DM/32

Larur replies to Ethaniel, "Absolutely. You can move freely through most of the goblin premise. It will make up numbers having you each along so feel free to join the show."

Male Half-Elf Wild Stalker 7

Very well, give us the letters and we'll see it done. These guests live in less foul quarters than Lubbertown, I take it.

He looks to Iscarel,

Bad Elven:

Looking back to the dwarf, Where's Samson? I'll take him with us this time.

After the interrogation, Bojask puts Jhelm into a damp and dark cell. "Hey, fancyboy!" he calls out as Bojask trudges away. "Mind to sneak me a little pesh? Could make for a better fight!" He snickers to himself and rubs his joints, still aching from being tied up.

Those bloody fools. He wouldn't have hesitated a moment to slit their throats if they had gone down. They were lucky, that's what. Well, now he would have to do a little Church work to get out of this but maybe it would leave him better off after all. If only he could get his hands on a little pesh... Would make the fight so much easier. He shivers.

Male Half-Elf Cleric 1 / Fighter (Cad) 1

Grumm's request to come along gives Ethaniel pause. Tippy has some faith in the dwarf...perhaps so should the rest of us. Then again, he might be a foe, sent to undo us from within. Then again, if he were, would not his story and manner be more...polished? Then again, would not his seeming simplicity be the perfect way to put us at ease with him, allowing him greater opportunity to do us harm?

Ethaniel coughs. Damned fever. I know not what to think.

Male Dwarf (Ancient Enmity, Lorekeeper, Deep Warrior) Barbarian (Invunlerable Rager) 2

"I'm pretty sure I'm not afraid. Cause like some wise dude once said, "Don't judge me. I am not a book."

Grumm smiles at Marcus with an air of naivety and unmaintained teeth.

Male Human DM/32

The delivery of the invitations goes without a hitch. Splitting up to deliver the twelve invitations hastens the process and you return with about half-an-hour up your sleeves to scoff some grub. You head down as guests who take the invitation start arriving and head down to the sub-level bar area. These people are familiar with the place and you each know they are frequent attendees to the pit fighting nights as they greet each other as they arrive. As everyone, drink in hand moves to the arena (38) taking up positions about the handrail to look down into the sandy floored pit below, the rules of the trials are relayed. No weapons, unarmed submission fighting, subdue your opponent. Saul says they will be paired up and fight all at the same time so that we may get to the real fight of the night.

Saul looks down into the pit and says to his prospective employees, "As unorthodox as my methods are, if you want a job here then you will need get use to my methods. Give as good as you get here and now and you will find yourself employed by my and my partners tomorrow. Do not break the rules I have set or you will not only earn my disfavor but also my ire. Good luck."

The Octahedron Fighting Pit

Anyone who wishes to participate in the Tiefling vs Pigsaw fight roll initiative please.

So the prospective bouncers are gonna slog it out first, then the Tiefling and Pigsaw? Marcus will watch. His only interest is how the Monk goes(nostalgia) and hoping the Tiefling gives the Pig a quick death (also hoping Saul gave him some gear. We sold all his stuff. What's he got to fight with?)

Yes, the bouncers have their bout, then the proper fight ends the evening. Saul has equipped him with whatever he wanted and is similarly equipped to the way he originally was on the streets. Ethaniel gives a polite nod to Madie right before the brawl begins, but otherwise shows the monk no favor. This will be brutal, I am sure. I hope that Saul sees what he wants.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male Human DM/32

Firstly, i want you to know how this went down. I sat down with my 8y/o daughter and played out each fight. She had great fun, her first time actually playing and she loved kicking my butt.

There were no weapons allowed into the pit nor were bucklers/shields or heavy armor. Infact, everyone wore leather armor except for Madie who refused any armor at all.

First up were Madie and John 'Darlin'. Madie moved first and tried to take advantage using stealth in the low light. John spotted her however and moved in to base. To bad though, she was far too fluid in her movements and her hits stung like a wasp. Her great speed allowed her two strikes to his one and he was very quickly knocked out.

Saul asked if she was happy to fight again right away and she agreed to continue.

Next Madie faced Andrezi. This fight was almost the same as the previous but Andrezi did manage to hit Madie once before he too was knocked out just as quickly as John 'Darlin' had been. The invited guests were extremely impressed with the young ladies skill at hand to hand, even against armored opponents. She moved gracefully avoiding blows, almost as though her opponents were forecasting their attacks. Madie decided to take a seat whilst the next round went ahead.

Next were the two ex-guardsmen, Panril and Horrim. Both wearing their leather military issue armor. Horrim decided to use the shadowy light to make a stealth approach upon his comrade. It worked a charm, Panril didn't see the blow coming even though he had tried to make ready for it. This was more of a even fight, blows exchanged and no ground given between the two friends. Horrim managed however to land a critical hit which put Panril almost on the ropes. Panril got one last retaliatory blow in before being knocked out. This fight could honestly have gone either way. For if Horrim had not managed that stealth attack to begin with, the victory may have been different.

Now it was down to Madie and Horrim to punch it out. Saul asked if any of you would care to head down and aid in healing the contestants. A small break ensued allowing healing to be done so that Madie and Horrim would be fit to continue. Spirits were high between all the contestants and no animosity was harbored after the matches.

Madie and Horrim entered the pit for the last round of the trials. This was a more exciting fight. Madie, making the most of opportunities afforded by Horrim, who was not as well trained in hand-to-hand combat as Madie had been. The monks superior skill and training were obvious before the guests and other contestants. Even with his superior armor and large muscular physique, Madie convincingly defeated Horrim with more perfectly placed lightning fast strikes and claimed victory over the trials. Cheers erupted from above and every was very keen to speak with and get closer to the attractive, fit and powerful monk.

Eventually, Madie came up along with all the others to join the gathering ready to watch the final fight between Pigsaw and Zhelm. Everyone offered Madie drinks and food and some even passed her coin purses out of appreciate for her skills displayed. She declined all alcohol, took a bite to eat and humbly accepted the purses but handled them awkwardly as though she merely accepted them to be polite. Ethaniel hung by her side and it was obvious she appreciated the company.

After ten minutes of discussion and celebration, Saul broke the tension among the other potentials and said.
"You have all displayed skill enough this evening to be hired as bouncers by me to serve the Goblin. Madie however, demonstrating unmatched skill has earned a higher role, to be discussed later this evening. Congratulations all. Welcome to the 'family'. And now, for the main trial of the evening. The demonspawn and Pigsaw. Bojask, we are ready."

As soon as the command was given and Pigsaw was released, Zhelm moved in to prevent giving the boar a charge. Zhelm layed into Pigsaw with his flail. Two hits on the boar successively before Pigsaw replied in kind. Pigsaw traded back two gore hits on Zhelm. Would Zhelm swing favour back his way. Both missed their next attacks but the Pigsaw hit with a critical gore, opening Zhelm's stomach and that was the end. Pigsaw continued goring the dying Tielfing on the ground until Bojasks command finally broke it off from its bloody frenzy. The champion of the pit lives to fight again.

Saul, "Well there's the answer we were hoping for. He put up more of a challenge than I thought possible. Gawd, I swear that beast is part demon itself."
