DM Maslen's Second Darkness PF Conversion
(Inactive) Game Master
Pathfinder Maslen
The third largest city in Varisia, Riddleport is also the most notorious. It is here that the machinations of an ancient race, once again boil up out of the Darklands and into the light. The sinister plots of the subterranean underwriters manifest!
You're probably thinking of special properties, like the wolf's trip ability, where when they hit with an attack, they get to make a free trip check. Weapons with the trip ability don't need a hit first, they just get to apply extra bonuses like magical enhancement and weapon focus to the trip roll.
Yeah, I'm with Tippy on this. The trip ability gives a +2 to the cmb roll and allows you to use the weapons reach and enhancement bonus on your trip attacks. Haven't seen any other interpretation of that, though honestly I've never thought of it your way, Waife.
My understanding is as Tippy's: the trip replaces the melee attack, so the roll is against the enemy's CMD, and success will result in that enemy falling prone (and not in any damage).
On combat maneuver success: If your attack roll equals or exceeds the CMD of the target, your maneuver is a success and has the listed effect.
The word "attack roll" leads me to think that you make a single roll, as your attack, and that determines the result. Were it two separate rolls, I believe it would specify "CMB roll," and have additional language about the need to hit the target first.
I can find nothing in the entries about reach weapons or whips that amends the above, but I may have missed something.
As for Ethaniel's placement, he should indeed be in V16, right below Tam. It was late, and my weary eyes drifted as I was determining the square on the grid. The whip has a 15-foot reach, so the trip should still be valid.
When you attempt to perform a combat maneuver, make an attack roll and add your CMB in place of your normal attack bonus. Add any bonuses you currently have on attack rolls due to spells, feats, and other effects. These bonuses must be applicable to the weapon or attack used to perform the maneuver. The DC of this maneuver is your target's Combat Maneuver Defense. Combat maneuvers are attack rolls, so you must roll for concealment and take any other penalties that would normally apply to an attack roll.
Speak for yourselves! I think I managed one attack and we're in round... eight? Haven't cast a spell either. and "oh it'll be a short one, no need to burst into song just yet"
"No? Oh. Well all my party members ran out of range. Oh. Okay. :("
Trying to turn this route into our own ambush. If we can get inside, their numbers will matter far less. A flat out run is not gonna work. Both tippy and Marcus can only manage 20ft speed so we will be caught eventually. Get this inside and we can either hide or mow down mooks one at a time.
Might disrupt the realism but I am changing the map slightly. I have decided to import and use the actual Riddleport Map given in the book. I originally decided against it due to the pixelation but have decided to use it anyway. That way i don't need to redraw the entire map. Thank you for your understanding.
Ha! And I was about to post my amazement here at the incredible kick ass map you made with MapTools, not realizing it was the professionally published one. Never admit to these things!
That being said, the other map you made was also kick ass. Thought you should know.
Cheers Tipster. Especially since I did this one with a nice fat headache. As you can tell though, I have had to overlay new buildings to bring back the texture quality of the buildings and ships. Still time consuming but I am happy with how it's turned out.
I just figured the foes... for whatever reason they are seeking us are very persistent for some campaign reason but I agree with Marcus... Tam is not about to let himself be put at the mercy of cut-throats and vermin!
As far as Tam knows... the criminals here have attacked us wholly without provocation... so he is going to make them pay ad work for it he will NOT surrender!
I'm 30 posts behind in the gameplay thread! I'll catch up ASAP, but I finally had some work come my way and I've been flat out this weekend.
Augh, and a quick look tells me my response to that knowledge roll didnt actually get posted. I hope I'm not holding things up!
As for the pace, I'm so so. This game is always fun to check up on, no matter what we're doing. But on the other hand... I want to see some of those exotic looking guys that so-frequent the cover art. What do they call them again? Drogs? Trow? :P
Would anyone object to trying to resolve this with diplomacy? A parley? We're not even entirely sure why they're on our scent. Surely Larur isn't so important that a small private army is after him. There has to be at least two dozen, right?
Male Human {Black American} Monk 1 / Paladin 2 / Bard 1
I'm always open to diplomatic resolution... but here in this city... that usually would need to be from a position of strength ... they don't really have a need to 'parley' right now.
Ummm, this is all perfectly exciting. I'm thinking, as Calistrians, if we get out of this, some revenge needs to be planned, ASAP. I think it would be great fun to plan out and execute an urban gang war, Pathfinder style.
Well Marcus is not for getting us killed. I say we flee to Iscarel's safe house (since his priority is getting as many out as possible) and fight if cornered.
Female Human Witch 2 (AC 12/12/10, HP 16/16, Conditions: Nil)
From Ascaria's perspective, she won't be excited about taking revenge on a horde of pauper's who are bullied into attacking us. It would take something really serious to make her go along with such a plan.
From a player's point of view, I'm ok with anything. I would however also like to see a little meat on the story...
Ascaria and Ethaniel, if you want to focus your spells on the leader I can use Cause Fear on him? On a successful save he's shaken (-2 to saves) for a round, so we could easily bring him to his knees with our combined casting might!
