Don't worry, Kevin, being on fire is the new cool.

"What is going ON in there?!" cries the concerned gnome, trying to peek around the corner (and knowing that even her best dance moves are unlikely to get her safely across that pit).

Benedict, meanwhile, plods along the wall, intent on his prey. Having passed the pit, he takes to the ground and scurries right up to the gloomy wayang who smells so enemy-like. Double move, 10' climb and 25' regular.

Yes, explosive bombs discovery, so 10' splash radius and target catches fire on a direct hit. Also, I only see 46 damage to Igdethun: 24 (first bomb) + 2 (splash) + 17 (second bomb) + 3 (burn damage). Did you count the second bomb this round as a hit? I rolled a 1.

You ninja'd me with your edit, so we agree. And I did roll a miss direction in my original post - I rolled a d4 since there are only four possible squares for a bomb thrown at Igdethun to land in. It landed in the furthest spot from the wayang.

DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

My apologies for the delay, I ended up working all weekend. There’s a little more resolution to this room before we head east.

Knowledge (local), DC 22:
Yekai’s Aspis Consortium badge is not official – it is a forgery.

As the party heals and prepares to explore the passage to the east, Zirt’s eye is caught by the great quantities of paper sticking out of drawers underneath the alchemist’s worktable. Reams of documents crammed in the drawers exhaustively detail bizarre experimental processes, including the procedure for creating kirrixes and notes on refining the flask of reconcoction. Unsettlingly, but unsurprisingly, many of the pages are stained with blood or alchemical ingredients.

One row of drawers is packed with notes written in a different hand, which seem to concern themselves with numerous trades related to the purchase of magical reagents. In some of the documents, particular reagents have been circled.

Knowledge (arcana), DC 15:
A quick study reveals that most of the circled reagents are used in conjuration spells.

Letters hidden among the trade documents detail arrangements between Tseka and a local thieves’ guild called the Dragon Fangs. They reveal that she regularly hired them to beat up her enemies and to replace local merchant’s trade documents with forgeries. Tseka’s documents also disclose that she was gathering magical reagents by a variety of means, including stealing them in transit and purchasing them legally. She also compiled extensive lists of ingredients and lists of prices.

Profession (merchant), DC 15:
You realize that this document compares the prices for goods across dozens of different merchants, and that shorthand on the document suggests that Tseka was planning on starting her own business and undercutting the competition.

A small wooden coffer in the back of the bottom drawer contains narrow bars of a dull, dark gray metal, which Drizz’n thinks for a moment might be useful in creating a color darker than black, but he soon determines they’re cool, but not that cool.

Appraise, DC 18:
The gray metal is glaucite, an alloy of adamantine and iron that can only be found in Numerian ruins.

The drawers also contains evidence that links Tseka to the Korholm Agenda, a faction within the Aspis Consortium that has defied standard practice of avoiding direct conflict with the Society. These notes include schematics depicting various rooms in the Grand Lodge, and speak of plans to have someone named Marnarius lead an army out of the Hao Jin Tapestry. One of the documents seems to have a peculiar variety of scents wafting from it, and both Buster and Benedict eagerly run their noses over it in a linear, orderly fashion, almost as if their noses are reading something.

These documents appear to have some sort of scent code, but interpreting it requires the Scent ability and a Linguistics check, with bonuses from the ability to speak the appropriate language or from magic that allows one to speak or understand other languages. If none of you have the scent ability, you may have recently found something that would come in handy.

I cannot believe we actually have a servant of Abadar with Profession (merchant) trained for the check above.

"Some of these things might be interesting," Drizz'n says, as he looks over the items from Yekai's lab. "Let me see if I can figure some of this out. Drizz'n drinks his inspiring congatogen.

"OK, so here's the deal. That Aspis badge is a fake, obviously. The circled reagents are for conjuration spells, and this bar is glaucite, an alloy of adamantine and iron that can only be found in Numerian ruins. And I'm sure you're all thinking the same thing I am. Who cares about Numeria in 4718? That place is so two years ago."

Gavin scratches his head. He's following what everyone is saying, but isn't sure how they're coming to these conclusions. "Let's pack up any notes and items of use then, and keep moving. Unless I'm missing something?"

Rhinarium paste? Is this what will help us with scent?

Yep. Gives the scent ability for one hour. Now someone just needs to speak Dark Folk or otherwise boost the heck out of a linguistics check.

Drizz'n can mix an extract of comprehend languages, that in conjunction with the paste should work, right? He'll try that unless someone else has a way to read this coded message?

That will give you an extremely high chance of success, based on the bonuses it provides. And Drizz'n will be the only one he knows who's ever read a note 'written' in Dark Folk, so he can say he did it before it was cool. Please make a Linguistics check, with a +15 bonus from comprehend languages.

I don't think she can, since it'd be like helping someone read letters that she can't see. But Drizz'n's got a very solid chance of success. He also told me he's had a busy day but will post as soon as he's able.

Trying not to look too excited, while squealing with glee on the inside, Drizz’n applies the Rhinarium paste to his nose.

”Woah!” he says, flaring his nostrils. ”I think I could smell the difference between a wolverine and a badger right now.”

He takes the coded documents and tries to sniff the hidden information.

Drizzn’s sense of smell grows incredibly as he smears the strange paste onto his nose, and for a moment he’s almost overwhelmed with the new sensation, much as he would be if a bright light shone in his eyes or a blast of sound assaulted his ears. He adjusts fairly quickly and manages to regain his composure, though he continues to sniff the air eagerly for a moment before he’s able to focus on the scented document. Once he does, however, he studies the intricate array of dozens of subtle smells imprinted on it, and discovers that each precisely placed odor encodes a different letter in the Dark Folk language.

He quickly collects a blank sheet of paper from the workbench and notes down what the encoded message says, starting to write it out in Undercommon, then switching to Common after realizing that it will be a good deal more useful to his companions. He notes that some portions of the document have a stronger scent, from having been written more recently, and he writes those parts in a bolder hand. When he's finished, he lifts his hand from the handwritten translation to let the others take a look at it.

Gavin raises an eyebrow, for once impressed with Drizz'n. "That's good work. Madreki Gael, hrm..."

He thinks about the name a moment, to see if it's one he knows.

"Thanks!" Drizz'n beams before shrugging off his pride as you know, whatever. "Does that name ring any bells? Venture Captain Li is obviously going to be happy about this info."

Drizz'n imagines Amara Li shaking his hand and saying, "The society owes you a debt of gratitude Ke- I mean, Drizz'n of course." And he beams again, briefly.

I love that Gavin, as an urbane barbarian, has ranks in Knowledge (nobility).

As Drizz'n stands distracted by dreams of Pathfinder glory - which he would not admit to anyone - Gavin ponders whether he's heard the name in Tseka's mysterious scent-note. The cultured barbarian find the name doesn't ring any bells, but Drizz'n is surely correct that the information will be of much interest to Amara Li.

With the search of the room complete, a faint tapping sound can be heard, and source of it soon becomes clear: Igdethun's foot, tapping the stone floor with impatience. She is clearly ready to explore the tunnel to the east, and leads the party forward to do so. The narrow passage turns north, then opens to the east, into a large chamber, the walls of which are covered in maps, documents, notes and missives. Pins and daggers jut out of the maps in different spots. A raised stage takes up the southeast corner of the room and four pillars support its lofty ceiling.

A human figure stands against the far wall, and a haughty ratfolk speaks from a raised stage in the southeast corner of the room. “Welcome, Pathfinders! For that you must be, as none other would go to such lengths to pay me a visit. I can’t say I’m glad to see you. Are you more of Colson Maldris’s lackeys, here on another one of his murderous missions? Everyone’s heard about what you did to Ascalar Vruul. I assure you, no one here has bothered to blackmail that lout with evidence of his many indiscretions. Perhaps instead you are here to pledge your services to a far more lucrative organization? After all, you have shown some skill in locating this place.” She laughs. “It only took you, what, three years?”

With a gesture towards the human man, she continues, ”There stands one of your own, now joined to my enterprise. I propose a trade! You may have the traitor Makino, and you let me walk out of here unharmed.”

Sense Motive, DC 21:
Something seems amiss, and you believe that Tseka may not be totally honest in her stated intention to trade Makino away.

All – long, busy day and evening ahead of me, so may not get another post in until tomorrow. I expect things to calm down a lot beginning tomorrow and I should be able to bring us to the end of our Deepmarket sojourn without any more long delays.

"You could both come," she replies, tilting her head ever so slightly in a way she's heard humans call "cute". "It could be rather fun and exciting! Have you ever seen the big wide world above you? It's big! And wide! And there are lots of things to do, and teas to taste! And stories to hear. And I'm sure your mother would be proud of you if you did."

Gavin stretches, his joints popping as he does so. It's a bit odd seeing a dirty halfling moving in a way that implies there's a lot more mass present, but the illusory magic is still present.

Having limbered up, the oh so urbane barbarian says, "Let's be polite here. Manners are important. I'm Baron Gavin de Roche, and these are my companions. They can, of course, introduce themselves. Do I have the pleasure of meeting Tseka? You'll forgive me if... well, you're not what I was expecting."
