DM Khel |
In one hand! He's strooooong. But it will give him a penalty on his Acrobatics check.
Speaking of which, Gaelwyn - give me an Acrobatics check.
Gaelwyn |
Well, you see, Gaelwyn can't see in the dark, and being quite worried about this adventure decided that he needed a sunroof to make sure that he couldn't possibly run out of light as long as it was daytime. I'm not sure he realized that the sun didn't come with it... :-) Ok, "sunrod" rasa-frasin autocorrect...
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
After tying the end of a rope to his waist and giving the rest of the rope to Rokdor to pay out as he advances, Gaelwyn steps out onto the narrow ledge balancing carefully. "Here we go folks - wish me luck!"
DM Khel |
Gaelwyn makes it much of the way across the pit along the narrow ledge, but his foot slips on a smear of some sort of mustard-yellow-colored filth. His fall is quick, with just time for a whispered "Oops" before he crashes to the slimy bottom of the pit, dragging some twenty feet of the slack rope along behind him! He lands on a filthy pile of refuse, which cushions his fall, but is truly a mixed blessing, as it leaves him reeking of a combination of odors that would be frightful individually and, in concert, are simply beyond description.
Falling damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
The bottom of the pit is slimy and walking is slightly tricky, but the rough-hewn walls of the pit appear reasonably climbable.
DC 15 Climb check to get out.
Gaelwyn |
Gaelwyn glares up and says "Sure. If you stand up by the edge there I'll throw it right up to you. " then laughs and tries to shake off the worst of the slime.
Then he tries to climb out of the pit on the far side - away from the rest of the group.
Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
If he sees Oldmar's javelin he'll carefully toss it up out of the pit.
Since his first effort fails he'll try again.
Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Once he clambors over the edge of the pit by the dead goblins, he looks around carefully to make sure he'll be safe.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Oldmar Lucridious |
"Immensely indebted, sir," Oldmar remarks, catching the javelin by the haft. Once Gaelwyn gets the rope set up on the far side, Oldmar attaches it at this end and tries his luck along the edge.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Ironically, he promptly falls in as well.
Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (9) - 1 = 8
Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
Finally clear of the bit, Oldmar is rendered catatonic for the remainder of the mission, so great is the shame of having such soiled clothing and gear. Fortunately, his journal is safe deep in his pack, so he need not surrender his wayfinder on the spot.
DM Khel |
Going to handwave the rest of the Acrobatics rolls, I’ve had us at this dang pit for a long time.
Ekkie watches the Pathfinders make their way across the slimy pit, cackling a bit when Gaelwyn and Oldmar fall in. Once everyone is across, she adroitly scampers along the narrow ledge and joins the party on the other side. ”Never been this far,” she says to Gaelwyn, her voice a mixture of fear and awe, ”they kill me if they see me. But they kill you too! You go first.” She quickly searches the fallen goblins and discovers a flask of alchemist’s fire on one of them, then turns, ready to bring up the rear.
Turning the corner ahead reveals a long, ten-foot wide hallway with several doors coming off it. The first door (A2) leads into what appears to be some kind of training room for tiny thieves. It contains peculiar equipment, such as several human-sized training dummies covered with bells for pickpocketing practice, and an obstacle course studded with sharp nails and jagged junk, but nothing else of interest.
Continuing down the hall, the next room (A3) first appears to be another waste disposal area, but a closer look reveals it to be the sleeping area for a number of goblins. Scattered heaps of smelly bedding, moldy food, and rubbish lie scattered about, and the only things that really distinguish it from the recent pit trap are the lack of a slime mold and the fact that one doesn’t have to climb out of it. A door on the north side of this room opens to reveal a very long, narrow hallway. This hallway is not of any relevance to the scenario, I think it’s included as a way for frightened goblins (or Pathfinders) to flee.
Ekkie grumbles a bit, saying, ”Nightsoils all run away? This place empty! They not so tough!” In spite of this, she carefully maintains her position behind the party as they approach the next door.
The ceiling of this room (A4) has partially collapsed, creating a two-story space to the north while exposing the chamber above to the south. Rubble lies haphazardly about the place, with some other larger pieces serving as tabletops for crude alchemical apparatuses. Soot, scorch marks, and other chemical residues cover many of the chamber’s walls and other surfaces. A sizable slab of jagged debris leans against the broken edge of the upper level’s floor in the room’s center. The upper level seems clear of wreckage and contains several wooden worktables. Opposite the entrance, a set of stone steps that once rose to the upper level are broken away halfway up their length. The whole chamber smells of burnt oil and acrid chemicals.
Rokdor and Sobestion spot a goblin (blue) hiding behind a large chunk of rubble, and Oldmar’s sharp eyes detect a second goblin (red) trying to hide as well! Unfortunately, before they can act on what they’ve seen, each of the goblins throws a small flask at Gaelwyn! He’s quite lucky, however, as the flasks smash into the wall on either side of him.

This is the surprise round, Oldmar, so only a move or a standard, not both. And you can't have charged, because Gaelwyn is in the doorway. Do you want to have just moved up next to the goblin? You can keep your rolls when your turn to attack comes around.
DM Khel |
Yeah, left Gaelwyn off the list by accident, but he doesn't get a surprise round action due to a low Perception check. So you'll be a little drier and less disgusting than Oldmar.
DM Khel |
Yes! I'm less disgusting than Oldmar. The GM told me so...
Don't rub it in - you'll just end up getting more of that goo on you.
DM Khel |
Sorry, had I been thinking about it, I would have realized the Gaelwyn goes before the goblins in normal initiative and given him a chance to act. Now he gets to.

Gaelwyn advances into the room, but the goblin he attacks is far too nimble and he misses!
The goblin facing Oldmar tries to dart away from him, but it stumbles on a chunk of rubble as it moves. Oldmar’s axe comes sweeping down and cleaves a goblin skull in twain! It takes a moment to shake the axe loose of the thick bone of the goblin’s pate, but Oldmar is confident the little fellow will trouble him now more.Used your previous roll as the AoO.
Gaelwyn’s goblin proves its nimbleness once again, dodging back and moving away from him, making it to the base of the stairs. Once the goblin is safely away, he tosses a flaming flask! The flask strikes Gaelwyn, setting him alight!
To everyone’s surprise, a third goblin pops up from the rubble, launching a flask at Rokdor before running away! The throw is a poor one, but the flask bursts into a huge ball of flame and catches the dwarf on fire anyway!
At the same moment, a goblin leans over the edge of the room above and drops something on Rokdor, which explodes violently, the flames reaching Sobestian in the doorway! Ekkie steps forward and peers in the door, her eyes wide. She can be heard saying, ”Ooooh! Aaah!” at the explosion, as if she’s watching a celebration of Andoran Independence Day.

Rokdor focuses on putting out the flames covering her, and succeeds in dowsing them! Oldmar’s axe strikes down another goblin, and Sobestian’s whip causes the one at the bottom of the stairs to crash to the floor. Hakotep readies himself to cast a spell, and Gaelwyn swings his greatsword through the empty air where the tripped goblin stood a moment ago! Meanwhile, flickering flames continue to burn on Gaelwyn’s raiment, singeing him a bit more before going out.
Fire damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3
The tripped goblin leaps to his feet, dodging Gaelwyn’s blade as he moves. He scrambles up the stairs, hopping over the gap in the broken staircase and hauling himself up to the next level!
Gaelwyn, AoO: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Greatsword damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 3) + 6 = 15
No AoO for Oldmar as the goblin goes by, because it’s actually well above him on the flight of stairs.
Acrobatics to climb broken stairs: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Climb to pull up: 1d20 ⇒ 17
The goblin on the upper level cackles as three of the invaders group themselves together, and he launches another bomb, aimed at Sobestian! His aim is poor however, and the bomb explodes on the floor next to the bard! Ekkie steps further into the room, a wide grin crossing her face as the bomb bursts in a ball of fire! She claps her hands in excitement at the noise and destruction.

Gaelwyn, Oldmar and Sobestian take 2 points of splash damage, DC 13 Reflex to make it 1 point of damage.
Party is up!

Gaelwyn – there are no goblins in your reach (take a look at the map, linked above my avatar). You can take a different action if you like.
Oldmar – per the scenario: “Creatures can reach the upper level by climbing up the stone slab with a successful DC 20 Climb check or by jumping for the top of the broken stairs with a successful DC 12 Acrobatics check followed by a successful DC 15 Climb check to pull oneself up. Creatures who beat the Acrobatics DC by 20 or more land on the upper level and don’t need to make the Climb check to pull themselves up.”

DM Khel |
Goblin is quite a ways away from Sobestian (and everyone else) and one level above you as well.
DM Khel |
Nope - both goblins are about 20' away measured horizontally and also one floor above you. You could try to get up to the upper floor, as described in my post above.
Oldmar Lucridious |
Oldmar is on his phone and can't edit the map and drops rage, takes a few steps back, drawing a javelin as he goes. He hucks it at the nearest gobber.

And while he's able to reach the ledge the loose stonework at the edge comes apart as he attempts the climb. Hopefully his efforts will distract the goblins.
"We need to think this through more carefully - these goblins are way better prepared and equipped than I expected. After we're through this room we need to regroup and plan our entrances with some care."
DM Khel |
Oldmar Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18 Make it 1 point of splash damage.
Rokdor’s magical fist tags the goblin with the bombs, causing him to snarl at her for a moment, though his attention is soon diverted to Gaelwyn’s ascent of the broken stairway. Oldmar chucks a javelin, which bangs off the ceiling and clatters amidst the rubble on the floor. Ekkie peers around the corner of the doorway, eyes wide, and looks at the goblins up above, continuing to admire the fires and explosions they’re adding to the fun! Hakotep continues casting his spell, while Gaelwyn makes some progress up the stairs toward the goblins on the upper level.
The goblin at the top of the stairs hurls a flask of fire of Gaelwyn, but it bounces off the wall and lands harmlessly behind the stalwart fighter. The bomb-throwing goblin, however, is much more accurate in his throw, and he hurls an explosive flask right at Gaelwyn’s chest, the blast engulfing Oldmar and Sobestian as well!
Alchemist’s Fire at Gaelwyn, range: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 - 2 = 5

Gaelwyn catches on fire, burning as he stands partway up the ruined staircase! Oldmar and Sobestian’s projectiles fly harmlessly past the last goblin standing.
Gaelwyn is staggered, and the 1d6 ⇒ 5 points of fire damage he’ll soon take will put him unconscious, and still on fire. Just so y’all are aware. Gaelwyn can take a move or a standard action this turn, though a standard action will also knock him unconscious.
Also, can everyone update their HP totals? Some of you have, looks like Sobestian still needs to, not sure about others.
Gaelwyn and Rokdor are up!
Rokdor Goblinbreaker |
Dorf's HP are up-to-date.
Rokdor hurries over to Gaelwyn and starts batting at the flames with her heavy dwarven cloak. Can she put them out or help to put them out?
DM Khel |
Per the rules on catching on fire, Rokdor can attempt to Aid Gaelwyn to give him a +4 to his next save, if he's somehow conscious when his turn comes around again (and isn't staggered, since he can't take a full-round action to put out the fire if he's staggered). Next round, she (or anyone else in reach) can take a full-round action to try to put out the fire, with the normal DC 15 Reflex save to succeed.
Given all this, Gaelwyn might want to use his move action to get back down the stairs, so that anyone trying to put out the fire on him when he's unconscious doesn't also have to make an Acrobatics check to get to him.
