Randu's bolt clangs loudly off the stone and metal face but seems to leave little impact. With a grating roar, the huge mouth opens and a tongue of fire lashes out at Vharg.

I would give you one Alexei, but it's still the surprise round and I'm unable to act. I am surprised though that out of the two caches of potions we found you dident get one. I have three and I would have given you one if I had known.

Treasure list (can you spoiler what you have taken so we can keep it out the fun)

In the safe you find:
4 potions of cure moderate wounds - Vharg (1), Perrah (1), 2 more
3 potions of lesser restoration - Perrah (1), Mortimer (1), more
2 potions of remove disease - ?
500gp - ?

Perrah trails along behind the warriors directing her lights ahead of everyone.

Randu said he took "some" of the potions so I think it is safe to assume that means 1 each of CMW, lesser restoration and remove disease. That leaves one spare potion of Cure moderate wounds. Take that Alexei. Randu can you update your sheet to reflect that?

Perrah's actions next round (DMJ only)

Spoiler:
Perrah will cast mage armour and pull out a potion of light moderate wounds moving forwards five feet.

Vharg is missed by the lash of fire that snakes out of the mouth. The smell of burned flesh fills the air around you, even though none of you have been touched by the flame.

You're able to determine that this is some kind of animating haunt, causing the furnace to "come alive".

Effect: Once per round it lashes out with it's flame tongue (+6 to attack, 4d6 fire damage) at one target within 30 feet. It continues to attack each round so long as there are creatures in the room.

Chest heaving like a set of blacksmiths bellows, Vharg slowly returns to a normal state. Winded from the brief but terrifying haunt Vharg looks at each of his friends. Vharg could not run Mortimer. Not when Ilya and Alexei still in room. You hunter, you understand. Why do you protect the pinkskins and explain your actions to them? Wispers a dark voice inside of him. They are chattel. Let them burn, you owe them nothing! Continues the insidious voice. No, they friends! The followed Shran-Tok! That is old life. Nothing there for Vharg any longer. Willing away the darkness of his preadator spirit away, Vharg rises and begins to examine the area.

As Vharg searches the area around the furnace, as he gets closer and closer to the cursed machine he grips his ebon talismin tighter and tighter. Examining the space he rumbles to Hunter. Mortimer, you know much about haunts. Can you make this spirit go away for good?

Mortimer returns to the area before the furnace, his expression a mix of pride and concern. "Well done, friends." he says before giving each a pat on the back or arm. He turns his attention to the now quiet furnace. He remains very cautious before it. "Haunts normally have some specific reason for existing." he says. "I'm afraid it will require knowledge of the prison's history or of local tales to find out what restless spirit is at the heart of this one."

Climbing into the furnace, there are plenty of ashes and charred bits of wood most of which are rotted. Searching around amongst the debris, Ilya shakes his head as he climbs out covered in grime. There's nothing out of the ordinary in that furnce, just what you'd expect. Ashes and filth.

Grimspawn Tiefling Alchemist (Beastmorph) (AC 14 / HP 9 / F +2 R +4 W +0 / Init. +2 / Perc. +4)

Ha ha ha Booms Vharg, his laughter echoing in the room. Here, Ilya, Vharg will help. Putting statement into action Vharg lifts the halfling with one arm, his bicep rippling as he bring him to the rim of the furnace. Pensively Vharg watches as the halfling scoots around inside of the furnace. If Haunt returns, Littleman not able to make it out.... Vharg will have to grab him. Imagining the furnace suddenly coming to life and flames enveloping the diminutive halfling, Vharg grimaces. It would hurt, be he could probably pull him out in time, probably.

Much to Vharg's relief he watches as Ilya inspects the furnace and finding nothing he gives the soot covered trickster a hand down. Vharg not sure how long spirit rest for, but Vharg think it best if we not go in this room again. Lets move on. Waiting for Mortimer and the rest of the group to ready themselves Vharg moves towards unopened door in the furnace room. Giving a resigned nod he moves to open the door, letting Mortimer cover him with his gilded crossbow. Just before he opens it he quietly says to Mortimer. Each room has been worse than last. First blistering cold, then flaming skull and now Demonic Furnace. Vharg not know what next. You promise Vharg if he falls you take him out of this place. Build bonfire, burn body until nothing left. Not leave Vharg for worms, no way for warrior to die. Having said what he needed to say, Vharg takes a steadying breath before throwing open the door, while keeping his Guisarme at the ready for whatever horror lays beyond.

I suspect any spirit within this particular tomb probably resents being put in a giant oven. Ilya stood on tip-toes and poked his head into Ember Maw's gaping mouth, I don't know what remains of you, sir. But, I suspect some cool water for your burns would be a blessing.

It looks like we have open access to the water in this room. If so, Ilya will sweep out as much of the ash as he can reach, and dump it in the lake.

Perrah helps to clean the ashes off Ilya. "That was brave, climbing in there."

Grimspawn Tiefling Alchemist (Beastmorph) (AC 14 / HP 9 / F +2 R +4 W +0 / Init. +2 / Perc. +4)

Alexei smiles a bit and says I think about dying and death all the time. I suppose it comes from being grimspawn. We have a rather unique fascination with death. I have actually made a study of various funerary rites. For myself, just as long as I am not raised as undead what is done with my corporeal remains are not important. Let us just make sure it does not come to that. We watch each other's backs and work together and we should be fine.

"And I try to avoid the subject of death," Randu admits, as he overhears them, "I'd rather dwell on the joys and pleasures of life's being rather than its ending. Perhaps I shall gather enough wealth to buy an estate, set my sisters up comfortably until they find husbands that suit their fancy, and live a live of modest yet still decadent luxury." a smile. "I suppose if I should die, my sisters would be very cross with me if I left my remains here. I'm a Desnan, though not the most devout, so the rites of that faith would do me fine."

"Where to next? I shall try to check it out, though these haunts are ... interesting, like living traps, or should I say unliving." That and they scare the #$## out of me, but I do not feel I have been pulling my weight here, and I will be damned if I go into dangers on the late professor's behalf cowering all the way while others charge ahead.

I just prefer to charge more cautiously.

Ilya begins cleaning the furnace out while the rest of you watch. It appears to be a fruitless endeavor, doing nothing more than dirtying the already grimey halfling. About halfway through his cleaning, he dumps another armload of random debris into the water and as they hit a sudden bubbling and hissing erupts from the water.

Watching warily, you can see that amongst those particular debris he had just dumped appear to be some scorched and blackened bones. Very clearly human remains. The water bubbles louder, the heat radiating off of it almost too much to bear. Just as quickly the bubbling subsides and the water calms again.

Ilya doesn't take any chances and continues to empty the furnace. There are no further incidents while doing this and by the time he's finished, Mortimer gives him a nod. Without knowing who or what that was, there's no way to be sure. But I'd hazard a guess that you've either put this haunt to rest or at the very least delayed it's reformation quite a bit.

Vharg gives the halfling a companionable slap on the shoulder that nearly sends him to the ground before turning to knock open the rotted door next to the furnace.

I'll post the next update with room description, etc shortly.

Moving into the room, you notice several moldy cots strewn around the room, while doors to smaller, more private sleeping cells hang askew to the west. Judging from the rest of this room's decor, this must have once been the prison's infirmary.

Moving into the room, you see double doors to the south that must lead to the long hallway you saw when first entering the prison. As you spread out to search the area, a sudden maddening scream fills the air as a gaunt, transluscent skeleton suddenly appears floating in the air before you. Despite the horror, you've all seen too much today to let it phase you and the spirit fades away before you.

You can hear items around the room beginning to rattle.

Knowledge Religion DC 12:
This is a poltergeist. It's an incorporeal undead that haunts a specific location. Usually they cannot travel further than 120 feet from the location they were created in. Even when killed, the spirit will reanimate fully healed within 8(2d4) days unless you can determine the reason it was created and set right whatever prevents it from resting in peace.

Besides being incorporeal, poltergeists benefit from a natural invisibilty that they only shed when attempting to frighten the living. They have no real bodies of their own to attack with unlike other ghosts, instead telekenetically flinging nearby objects with dangerous results.
