The lizard-king responds to Ilystria sharply.

Draconic:
"Are you in the habit of questioning our ancestors, faerie one? They do as they will. They are creatures of the spirit world, their needs and their desires are not as us, the living, those who eat and breathe and rut. If the ancestors tell us that we must make examples of our foes, must set fear into them so that they will not raise sword or claw against us, then so be it. They speak, they protect us, we honor them and so our forefathers make safe our children."

Ilystria shakes her head in earnest denial at the lizard-king's words.

Draconic:
"We wish to be friends and allies of your tribe, not your foes. The mortals behind me are different from the ones you have had dealings with before. They do not seek to conquer the land or raise their swords against anyone. They want to live in harmony with everyone they meet and ensure that this land remains a peaceful land for all. But I have seen the lengths that they will go to to protect their people, especially their younglings. I imagine they are much like you in that regard, Mighty King. I tell you this because, unless the human child is returned unharmed, there cannot be peace between your tribe and Emeria."

"You must honor your ancestors, I understand. Will you grant us an audience with them so that we may petition them directly for the child's release?"

Vallen is staring up at the exchange above, concentrating. "Uh..." He slowly responds to Cassandra. "The lizard king says the ancestors tell them to make an example of their foes and scare them so they... I guess... we...? never fight them."

The priest begins to nod as Ilystria speaks before summarizing for Cass and Jenya. "Ilystria is explaining we want to be at peace, but we can't be if they are keeping human children tied to posts in the middle of their village. Oh, she asked them if we can speak to the will o wisp directly!"

The lizard-ruler makes a curt gesture with one hand, cutting through the air. The frills around his neck rise slightly.

Draconic:
"No! I will not despoil the memory of our ancestors by making such demands of them. Their presence is an honor, not a convenience."
"It is only through our diligent worship and sacrifices that they give the tribe the gift of their wisdom and support. We must please the ancestors so that they will not turn their backs upon us. If we lose their favor, the tribe will wither. Thus, we must supplicate them and show that we are worthy of their continued favor."

Knowledge (religion) DC 12, if you can understand the lizard-ruler:
This seems like pretty common ancestor worship, with a twist. Usually ancestors are favorably disposed to their descendants, by nature of the pre-existing relationship - you want your kids to succeed. This sounds like the ancestor spirits are malevolent and must be placated. That's more common in evil cults. It's definitely odd. If the lizardfolk have no barometer for comparison (for instance, if they don't have a shaman), they may not realize how unusual it is for ancestor spirits to make those kinds of demands for "favor." Usually ancestor spirits make demands because they have specific taboos or supernatural needs that must be observed - otherwise they are only too happy to help their descendants. Ancestors that want you to fail unless you suck up to them are pretty far afield from that.

The lizard-ruler is not especially friendly, so the DC to get him to agree to things is not especially low!

Vallen's face contorts into multiple expressions as the lizard chief speaks. Confusion, disgust, and finally, anger.

"That's ridiculous!" He shouts, raising a hand into the air. "Ancestors should want to help without asking for supplication from their descendants! Does a father ask a son to pay for the roof over their head? A mother demand servitude in return for th milk from her breast?"

Incensed by this clear mutiliation of ancestor worship, Vallen speaks to their fey interpretor. "Illystria, there is no way that will o wisp is an ancestor spirit if it's making demands and threatening harm. Ancestor spirits don't do that, they only want to help their offspring. This tribe is being duped. Ask them why their ancestors would stand aside and watch them fail if they didn't lick their... er.. metaphorical boots. It doesn't make sense!"

When Ilystra flew over the gates to unlock it from the other side, Vladric ceased rummaging around for that rope and hook with a bemusement upon his face. That bemused look continues with Vallen's and Jenya's impromptu dance performance but hardens as Ilystria informs the party of the plight of a captured human child within the village walls.

Vladric stands by, playing the part of a dumb and mute bodyguard, as both Ilystria and Vallen start to converse with the various lizardfolk. Unable to follow the entire context of the conversation himself, save for Vallen's various exclaimed responses and Ilystria's occasional responses in the common tongue to both Cassandra's and Vallen's queries, Vladric quietly hopes that things won't devolve into a fight.

Not really all that important but I figured I should come up with a plausible excuse for Vladric not joining in Vallen and Jenya's dance performace...

Apart from his bemused expression, Vladric was unable to make out any discernable pattern between Jenya's and Vallen's respective dances; he did attempt to determine if their dancing was anything similar to the ensorcelling dance done by the Sith Fey of the old keep but apart from his observations and lack of non-response from the lizardfolk (plus a 15 to spellcraft from a take 10 attempt), it didn't seem like it. ;)

Ilystria's long, tapered ears droop in disappointment when the lizard-king refuses, what was in her mind, a perfectly reasonable request. She looks down at the group when Vallen begins making his vociferous objections. As a creature who came into being in a way unlike that of most mortals—through rutting, as the lizard-king might put it—she sadly doesn't have an answer to the dwarven priest's questions, rhetorical though they are. As she's waiting for someone else to come up with those answers, Vallen goes on to tell her what she's long since suspected is true. "I may not know what an ancestor spirit is, but I know that will-o'-wisp is not what it claims to be," Ilystria replies, but when Vallen brings up 'offspring', the fey begins to get a clearer idea of the nature of the relationship between the tribe and the supposed ancestor. "The problem is trying to convince them of that without insulting them."

Taking Vallen's words into consideration (although maybe not his exact words, for those would surely offend the dragon-folk-king), Ilystria turns back to the other monarch and offers a placating smile.

Draconic:
"Forgive me, Mighty Dragon King. My people do not have such ancestor spirits and I am unaware of the customs involved in entreating them. I meant no offense. I would be interested to know more of your people's ways, if you would indulge my curiosity. You seem to have great concern of the future of your tribe, particularly your younglings. A quality surely instilled in you from your before-fathers considering how your tribe has flourished despite the ravages other, different fuzzy ones have caused to your land. But you would not turn your back on one of your people's young for the simple offense of refusing to listen to advice, would you? Why would your ancestors watch your tribe wither for simply questioning them?"

Make an example? Oh no. Cassandra's face went white as a sheet as her mind raced to the worst possible conclusion to be taken from that comment. She lost track of the conversation as image after horrible image flitted through her mind. Eventually she heard the lizardman speak again, loud and angry. As quickly as the color had drained from her face, rage took it's place. A primal, maternal, protective instinct roared for blood. The eyes she turned to the lizardman were that of a predator. Worse, it was that of a mother predator needing to protect their offspring. Whatever they were thinking of doing to Tig, to a child, they had to stop him.

"Ilystria," Cassandra says. She didn't say it loud but there was an unmistakable growl underlying the word. "You tell that lizard brain if he or anyone of his tribe harms that child I will personally hunt them down one by one until they all join their ancestors. If they think they can scare us by torturing a child they are dead wrong in the most literal way possible. Every person in this kingdom will take up arms and burn this entire swamp to cinders. And I am not exaggerating in the least." Her bow was still out and pointing down but now the tip gleamed with fire. Already she was imagining the actions, the muscle movements, the feel of the resistance, to put the sharpened bit of steel right through the lizard's eye.

While keeping the hilt of his Aldori blade within easy reach in the event that it would be needed, Vladric will wait until Ilystria has conveyed Cassandra's warning to the lizardfolk tribe before sidling closer towards Vallen and Jenya as he whispers in a lower tone of voice to the both of them, "Queen Ilystria mentioned about having some prior knowledge of these Will O' Wisps before; perhaps she could get an audience with it or somehow try to speak to it?".

Vladric wasn't sure if it such a thing would even be possible given the largely unintelligible yammering spouting forth from the larger lizardfolk chief but it couldn't hurt to try, could it?

"Well... umm... you see..." Ilystria hems and haws over what Cassandra asks her to translate. The fey queen may be a tenderfoot when it comes to the art of diplomacy, but she's an old hand at making friends. And it would be far more difficult to make a friend of an enemy than to make a friend of someone she hadn't threatened with death and the destruction of their home and tribe. ...And the lizard-king is so much bigger than her. Draconic:
"It is not for us to question our ancestor spirits!" hisses the leader angrily. "They have made their will known; it is for us to appease them. You tire me, little flying bug, and I eat little flying bugs. Go before I call up all my warriors and we smite you!"

The lizardfolk on the palisade wall next to the lizard king look agitated. It's hard to get a read on them because their faces don't express in the same way as yours, but you'd guess by them gripping their spears that they are not happy and preparing for the possibility of things to deteriorate completely.

No they are not. You sure you don't want to hold on to the Grand Diplomat title a little longer, Vallen? =)

Little bug?! All thoughts of diplomacy and decorum flee the gathlain's mind when the lizard-king levels his insult at her. A more experienced queen would have been able to keep her composure, to smile sweetly as she repaid such an insult in kind. But Ilystria is far too young and far too impetuous to keep her temper in check. The fey's serene features morph into a mask of pint-sized rage, her colorless eyes narrowing to a glare and spots of crimson blooming across her high cheekbones. A wild little growl escapes her throat and her leafy wings beat a furious tattoo as the fey queen brings herself up high enough to look down on the overgrown king.

Draconic:
"That floating ball of light is not an ancestor spirit! It's a will-o'-wisp, you great stinking lizard! But you will know your true ancestors soon enough when we send you to join them unless you return the human child. RIGHT. THIS. INSTANT!"

The priest swallows the frog in his throat and reaches for his pistol, quickly loading it with a lead ball. "Can anyone else see the irony? They hate us because we attack them, we offer them peace, but they won't give up stolen human children so we have to attack them?"

The priest of Torag sighs, hefting the pistol straight up into the air. "Forge-Father, please watch over us in the coming battle as we rescue a human child from the clutches of evil. I ask you take pity on the souls of these lizardfolk, for they are trapped in a cycle of violence and know not what they do."

Here comes the fight!

The lizardfolk hang back a bit as the leader lets out an angry screech. Obviously angry and enraged, he waves an arm and his subordinates open the gate so that he can charge out to face you, even though his minions don't seem terribly keen on the idea.

Due to the positioning, and the fact that you know that this situation is deteriorating, I'll let ranged attacks and spells go off first. If the leader survives the initial fusillade we'll worry about getting to actual initiative order.

BOOM!

It may not be Jeyna's best shot, but it's good enough. The lizard chief is armored, but against a pistol at point-blank range it just doesn't matter.

Jenya's bullet grazes the chief as he swings wildly to knock Cassie's arrow aside at the last second, barely managing to avoid being completely impaled.

Vallen fires his smokewagon as well and the bullet lodges in the chief's armor, smoldering against a chunk of hard bone worked into the material.

All three attacks hit, but he has enough hit points that he's not badly hurt... yet.

The lizard-king sees Vladric as a clear challenger with his shining blade, and rushes to engage him. The enormous lizardfolk must duck to get out through the gate, but he comes barreling out regardless, stabbing out with his equally-large trident!

Vladric easily parries the thrust, but now he's in melee. Which is right where he wants to be.

As the brawl erupts, a ghostly, bobbing light appears inside the compound, just past the gate! The two guards on either side of the gate cower in fear. Inside the strange yellow light is what looks like a glowing skull!

At the same time, a pair of swamp caymans come rushing out of the waters from behind, only barely noticed by Cassie at the last second - they must've been lurking underwater, where she wouldn't have been able to smell them!

Yes, the lizard chief and the swamp caymans are all Large size.

Party's turn - the caymans moved up from their hiding places, and the chief charged!

Cassandra hears a splashing sound mixed with a very predatory hiss from behind and instinctively jumps forward. She turns and draws an arrow in the same motion. She zero's in on the low-lying enemy and sends a flaming arrow towards it's back.

Hmm, no Vlad and no Ilystria. Moving on.

Cass, the caymans have reach; you can 5' step back and shoot if you want. I'll assume you don't want to take an AoO.

Cass's flaming arrow lands in the back of one of the caymans, while Jenya blasts the lizard chief with another deadly shot. This one causes him to stagger slightly, and leaves a bloody hole in his shoulder, but he keeps coming!

The fearsome, very tall lizard chief hisses and flares his neck frills at Vladrick, waving his trident in a display of dominance.

Intimidate (demoralize): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23

Vladric is shaken for 2 rounds!

The floating skull vanishes as quickly as it appeared...

If Vlad wants to counterattack, now's the time. Otherwise I'll bot him and Ilystria tomorrow. Caymans will go once those two are resolved.

Vlad lashes out with his sword at the lizard chief.

Vladric: Dueling sword, shaken: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 10 - 2 = 12

His hasty slash is wide and the lizard-king easily sidesteps it, then hisses again.

Ilystria buzzes back to the team, greatly worried, trying to keep an eye out for the floating glowing skull. The lizard guards don't stop her as she flies over their heads by a good couple of feet; they're too busy watching the battle, awed and somewhat cowed.

One cayman bites at Cass while another comes up behind Vladric.

Cayman: Bite Cass: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Cayman: Tail slap Cass: 1d20 ⇒ 13

Cayman: Bite Vlad: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Cayman: Tail slap Vlad: 1d20 ⇒ 11

Fortunately they're just beasts and it's easy to avoid their gnashing teeth and tails.

Party's turn!

Round 2

Vallen has no problem getting a clear shot on the massive chieftan assaulting Vlad. He lifts his buckler high, beautifully crafted and gleaming pistol glimmering in the sunlight filtering through the trees.

The dwarf pulls the trigger, and the oversized hammer that bears an artfully carved visage of Torag swings down to strike its flint against the pan. The powder ignites and the flame travels into the barrel, but the rapidly expanding gases get trapped in place by the paper wad!

The pistol suddenly backfires through the pan, sending an explosion of black smoke and uncombusted powder all over Vallen's face that causes him to cry out loudly. No one can see the iron priest through the swirling cloud of smoke surrounding him, but they can certainly hear him coughing and speaking in rapid, angry dwarven.

Standard Action: Pistol attack on lizard chieftan.

pistol attack vs touch AC, point-blank, divine grace:: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 1 + 1 = 9 Uhhh oh.

The commotion coming from Vallen throws Jenya off, which her pistol doesn't quite jam, the shot is still really wild.

Round 2: Shakened, not stirred...

Having very little precious experience in dealing with bipedal foes much larger than himself, Vladric was somewhat taken aback by the Lizard Chief's impressive show of dominance and more than a little flustered at own ineffective attempt at striking back at the large lizardman.

Taking a deep breath or two to steel down any growing sense of panic upon his part, Vladric takes a bold step forward towards the Lizard Chief (as his move action)- hopefully it will be enough to place himself out of stabbing range from that immensely long trident; not to mention getting himself out of any immediate biting range from that cayman directly behind him!

Damnit, Think! There's no way I'd be able to match that foul Reptilian in pure strength... perhaps I shall take a page out of my old mentor's tricks and rely upon out-maneuvering this brutish foe.

If he is able to go into his Controlled Bloodrage while he's still Shaken, Vladric will attempt to do so as a free action. He will put all his Raging focus into Dexterity (18), as opposed to either Strength or Constitution.

Bloodrage Attack: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 14 - 2 = 22.

Bloodrage Damage: 2d6 + 4 + 3 ⇒ (5, 1) + 4 + 3 = 13.

Vladric's stats have now been adjusted to take into account his Dex based Controlled Bloodrage and his Dutiful Strike stage. ;)

Cassandra retreats again as the caymen rushes forward, leaping over it's thrashing tail. She dodges to the side, knowing it wasn't good at turning, to give her time for another shot.

I think I would call that "vacation" weekend... devastating. No free time whatsoever!

There's a fizzling sound as Vallen's gun misfires and nothing comes out, then a loud POP from somewhere inside the barrel.

Jenya's pistol, however, blasts the lizardfolk leader, and Vlad uses that opportunity to leap into action and plunge his sword straight into the foe's chest. The lizardfolk's fingers squeeze around his trident hard enough for his scales to lose their hue, then he lets out a horrid rattling noise and falls backward into the water.

Cassandra shoots one of the caymans, but the brute is undeterred as it rolls, even with a flaming arrow embedded in its back. The arrow snaps and the cayman wriggles to right itself so that it can lunge at her. Meanwhile the other cayman lurches toward Vlad from behind while he triumphantly knocks the lizardfolk down.

Behind the DM Screen:

Cayman: Bite Cassie: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Cayman: Tail slap Cassie: 1d20 ⇒ 19
Cayman: Bite Vlad: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Cayman: Tail slap damage vs. Cassie: 1d12 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Cayman: Grab vs. Cassie: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26

The cayman facing Vlad has little luck against him, as the fencer's control and speed are simply too much for it to keep up, and its tail whips angrily while it snaps at empty air. Cass isn't so lucky - the cayman's surprising burst of speed lets it whip her with its tail and then it catches her off-guard with its roll and latches on, holding tight to her with its jaw clamped shut!

Cassie takes 5 damage from the bite and 10 damage from the tail and is grabbed!

The strange floating skull reappears, hovering just behind the dying lizard chief, and seems to pulse with satisfaction.

Party up!

Round 3

Coughing and flailing, Vallen emerges from the blue-black cloud of smoke created by his backfiring weapon. The huge lizard chieftan was no longer threat at least, but it seemed like Cass was having a hard time with the swamp critters that flanked them.

The dwarf awkwardly puts his pistol back into its holster, the broken device only fitting at an odd angle. He grasps his stocky warhamer from the opposite belt loop instead, grim and powder-covered face suspiciously watching the will-o-wisp pulse nearby.

Stow pistol, draw warhammer.

Cassie digs into the cayman and rolls around, wrestling with it as her claws shred its thick, scaly hide. Blood flows freely into the water and finally it thrashes about. Even so, she has to lever its jaws open to get it off her leg!

Seeing how that fight is going, Jenya switches targets and with a BOOM sends a bullet into the other cayman fighting Vlad. A spatter of blood sprays from the hit but the enraged and hungry croc is too set on tearing down its prey.

Vlad and Ilystria up - will bot tomorrow if they haven't posted.

Botting Vlad and Ilystria.

Vlad turns and stabs again in the throes of his angry battle-lust.

He nearly finishes the cayman, but not quite!

Ilystria, remaining hidden, flies over by Cass in hopes of being able to support her as the fight continues.

The skull floats over toward Jenya and releases a bolt of electricity at her!

Behind the DM Screen:

Cayman bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Cayman tail: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3

The electricity blasts Jenya and leaves lightning arcing over all the metal that she carries!

The cayman bites and lashes at Vlad but he is able to keep it from scoring a solid blow.

Jenya takes 11 damage. Party up!

Round 4

The sudden aggression of the floating skull is the only excuse Vallen needs to purge it from the material plane. Raising his holy symbol in its direction, he ivokes the power of his god. "Torag, your servant asks you to smite this monstrosity that mocks that ancestors of these lizardfolk, mascarading as one of their own!"

A bolt of crackling, white-hot energy in the shape of a hammer flies forth from the dwarf's holy symbol, speeding towards the floating skull.

Though her aim is wracked by the lightning surge, Jenya still blows a hole through the skull of the cayman, killing it.

With adrenaline-fueled willpower, Cassandra ignores the pain in her leg and recovers here fallen bow. In the time it took her to finally drop the stupid lizard the chief had already fallen. That was good. That left one Cayman and...a flying skull? Is that what a Will-o-Wisp looks like? Didn't matter. That thing was tormenting the child just as much as the lizard folk here.
