With a bit of a blush, she adds, "I mean... if we have to fight that, it might help to be larger, don't you think?"

"It would probably help..." Korinne agrees, glancing up as Telmarni beats a hasty retreat from the spider's lair. "We might have to move up to get it to come out. For some reason it didn't seem like it responding to Cassandra's lure."

Makes since. Its a trap door spider.

Holy s$$$ it jumps high. Trapdoor spider? Cassandra's eyes bulge almost as much as Telmarni's at what they are up against. Big and creepy. And then back in the hole it goes. That means its covered and hard to see coming. Only one way to handle something with a hiding place, flush it out. Cassandra whistles loudly to get Telmarni's attention, then fishes out her new alchemical weapon and holds it in the air. When she takes it, Cassandra draws her bow. "Get ready to shoot."

Let's flush it out with an alchemist fire bomb.

"Oh, good idea Cass! I'll ready some magic; I have much better aim with it than I do with my crossbow..."

As Telmarni takes the alchemist's fire and heads into the skies once more, Korinne calls to mind a spell that should be guaranteed to hit the spider when it shows itself.

Telmarni turn around and raises an eyebrow towards Cassandra when she heard her whistle. Huh? She notices that Cassandra pulls out a alchemists fire and holds it up. Hm, that could work. But will it be enough to get the spider out? That trapdoor looked a bit thick to me. She shrugs and moves back to the group quietly.

Stealth: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

With the first step, Telmarni snapped a piece of bone under her foot. She gives up trying to move quietly, and rushes back to the group. She nods to Cassandra when she receive the alchemical item. "Alright. I'll see if it works. Just make sure to be ready, because that thing can jump!" Telmarni takes a deep breath and takes to the air and tries to stay clear of the range of that spider's leap when she nears it's lair. She decides to land in a nearby tree to conserve her strength.

Looking back to the group, she waves to them to come just a bit closer and to hopefully get ready for when the spider comes out. She frowns slightly at the situation. I am not sure this will work. It might be too thick to cause it to come out. And if we do not do enough damage to it before it retreats, it might decide to barricade itself in its lair. Oh... What to do! Telmarni thinks, and shakes her head from side. Some of her hair falls in front of her face and Telmarni tries blowing it out of the way.

Might as well ready til everyone is ready to go!

"Let's not antagonize it just yet, then," Valeska advises. "I usually keep a spell back in reserve for the evening when we camp, so I can bottle it, but right now, we'll need it. I'm thinking growth would be in order. We'd have two of us larger, able to handle the melee better. Then, as we approach, we burn the trapdoor so it can't run away, fire at it, then I can summon mist to conceal us for melee. It can't hunt what it can't see. I don't believe they're good at scent, are they?"

Just in "theater of the mind" terms, how far do you want to be from the trapdoor? You know where it is now, so you can line up 30, 60, whatever distance you like away from it -- too far and you won't be able to hit the spider, too close and it might jump out and bite you and run back!

Telmarni is about 60ft away from the trapdoor in a tree. Or in a tree that she can be in that is about that distance from the spider's lair.

I guess if everyone is ready, we can begin.

Seeing everyone is ready and close enough to attack the creature in some way, Telmarni puts away the alchemist fire and then mutters a spell incantation. A nearly imperceptible disk of force hovers near her. She grips the scimitar and pulls out the alchemist fire. She takes a deep breath and begins.

She swoops out of the tree, staying about 15ft from the ground. Flying close, she tosses the alchemist fire at the trapdoor to try to flush the spider out.

First casting shield on myself, AC 20. Then flying 15ft from the ground. Almost over it, about 20ft. from it, she will toss the alchemist fire at the trapdoor.

Alchemist Fire - Range Increment: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 3 - 2 = 4 Well, that did not hit. >.< Lets see where it lands.

Miss: 1d8 ⇒ 4 If I am correct, it lands next to the trapdoor. >.<

Telmarni soars over the spider's lair and drops a bomb. Sadly, the alchemical fire misses the trapdoor. The concoction lands nearby and flames quickly engulf some of the bones and the dry, webby grass that covers the trapdoor.

The spider pops out of the trapdoor, which causes Cassandra to loose an arrow. This causes the spider to scuttle away, slightly up the hillside, trying to avoid the arrow and the fire.

Vance follows up with an arrow of his own.

Vance: Longbow attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

His arrow is aimed straight at the trapdoor and thunks into the grassy mat, but misses the spider as it moves quickly out of the way.

The spider tries to leap into the air at Telmarni again...

Spider: Acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

... but it can't quite get high enough to threaten her.

Any other party members who have readied ranged attacks should use 'em before the spider flees back into its trapdoor as the other half of its Spring Attack! Valeska, are you Enlarging Hatch, or using a ranged spell or attack? Carinna, ranged attack or trying to close distance and make a melee strike?

When the spider pops out of its hole Korinne discharges her spell and a small bolt of energy flies from her fingertip to strike the spider but doesn't seem to do nearly as much damage as she was expecting.

Valeska casts her spell on Hatch, explaining, "It's only temporary, you'll return to your normal size soon, but at least you'll be in a better position to fight it for right now!"

Since Enlarge Person has a 1 round casting time, it goes off at the end of the round.

The spider scurries back into its hole. The grass and webs on top of the trapdoor smolder and catch fire. The trapdoor shudders slightly, as if the spider is reconsidering its choice of bolt-hole in light of this fiery situation.

Hatch seems amazed as he grows to enormous size. "I've been embiggened!" he says with an odd smile. He grips his enlarged shortsword and turns to look in the direction of the trapdoor. "Come on, spider, time to get squished," he says.

ROUND 3ish?

The spider leaps out of the bolthole again. As soon as it appears, Hatch charges across the terrain, letting out an angry yell.

Hatch: Charge attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

He misses, but his charge does interrupt the spider, and it turns to bite him.

Spider: Bite Hatch: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Hatch easily knocks the spider back, showing no fear of it.

Ladies, feel free to take actions for this round.

Oh Dear. Telmarni thinks, with eyes widen as Hatch charges up to the spider. "I am coming in Hatch!" Telmarni moves down next to the spider, opposite of Hatch and tries to cut at it. She momentarily focuses on her scimitar and swings with it in both hands.

Assuming that Telmarni didn't just lop off all the spider's legs at once... :)

Normally Korinne would laugh at Hatch's choice of words, but the sheer size and speed of the spider remind her that this is a deadly foe and even though he didn't object to joining the fight, Hatch is still largely their responsibility. Hoping to catch it before it can attempt to retreat back into its lair, she raises her hand and points at the creature once more. "Come on, work better this time!" she cries as another dart of energy streaks towards the spider.

Telmarni swoops down opposite Hatch and her blade rips through the spider in a perfect cut. At the same time, Korinne launches another blast of arcane energy. The spider seems to hop slightly in the air and when it lands it rolls over on its side, then falls onto its back. Its enormous, long legs curl inward involuntarily.

Turns out a typical medium-sized giant spider has only 16 hit points. Even slightly tweaked to account for a larger-than-4-person party they're not that tough! That's another easy 100 xp per party member. Within easy distance of level 2 if you can just explore a few more hexes!

Hatch nudges the spider's corpse with his foot. He says, "Huh. I was kinda looking forward to smashing it while big."

Small flames lick the grasses and dry bones on the hillside, though it seems unlikely to turn into a major conflagration, as the isolated bits of fire eventually burn themselves out.

No. Wait. "Don't," Cassandra cries out in panic. She drops her bow and charges towards the melee, drawing her axe on the way. Thankfully it missed and he was able to bat it aside. Miraculously, Telmarni lands behind it and slays it in a single swipe. The creature was dead and they suffered no damage. A good day. But Cassandra was still mad. She storms over to Valeska. "What were you thinking, sending Hatch in there? He isn't a fighter. One bite from that thing is all it takes and he'd've been dead. He's lucky it missed."

She gets very close to Valeska and it is hard to miss the changes her transformation has caused. Her face is now significantly more feline with slited pupils and light fur around the edges.

Valeska looks at the transformed Cassandra. Her eyes sparkle widely as she smirks and replies, "Oh, so you're showing your change, finally. Good! Embrace who you are. As for Hatch, yes, he's under our protection, but he's still his own man, and he relishes the chance to help. Better that he experiences his danger with his eyes wide open than when we're ambushed by those kobolds next week."

Tzerny hacks a throaty caw.

Valeska blushes and clears her throat. "Hatch, we'll get you some proper armor and being out here is good training. You did well."

At Cassandra's reaction, Carinna decided to remain silent. She was right about putting Hatch in danger but Valeska was also by pointing Hatch was his own man. "He is actually older than many of us..." But also her inability to put her fear aside and act was the most disturbing to her.

Hatch pokes at the trapdoor with his short sword and says, "Yeah... I guess I could've gotten bit and that would not be good." Then his face falls like he's processing some kind of unhappy memory, but he says nothing more.

Vance says, "Spider probably bites things, then hauls them down into its hole to devour. Tosses the bones out here and then waits again." The old huntsman gingerly pokes the trapdoor with the end of his bow. "Gonna be a nasty hole down there full of webs and remains."

"...What?" Cassandra asks. Her hands go up to her face but she already knows what's there. She turns away reflexively to hide her face but turns back, confused. "Wait. You knew? How? Does anyone else know? Do you even know what it means?" She asks the questions rapid fire in hushed tones as she shifts back to a human appearance. "Alright, maybe he can help but he certainly isn't prepared for combat. He was only supposed to watch and help with mapping. You can't throw a novice against something that dangerous."

Then again, looking at its stats. Neither a bite or the poison, even if he failed ever save, was likely to kill him unless it crit.

"It takes a beast to know a beast, child," Tzerny lectures. "And out here, even if you aren't ready for combat... you will be."

I'll assume that Valeska/Tzerny are the only ones that were close enough to really see the change in Cass.

"Wow, that was great work!" Korinne marvels as Telmarni cuts the spider down with great ease. "Between you and Hatch, it didn't stand a chance," she smiles as she gives them each a hearty slap on the back.

Her attention is focused more on the spider's lair and Vance's words than the odd moment that passes between Cassandra and Valeska and so she only catches the very end of the conversation. "...Hmm? Well yes, I'd say so Tzerny but what does animal husbandry have to do with combat preparedness?" she asks, looking rather confused.

With the spider felled, Telmarni flicks her scimitar around in a circle before sheathing her weapon. She glances around, just to make sure nothing else other than the group is moving in the area.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 Just felt it is something Telmarni might do.

With nothing else moving in the general area, Telmarni nods in thanks to Korinne. But then turns away from Korinne, and grimaces due to the pat on the back. She shakes her head and walks to the trap door. "Might as well see what is down there at least. Hatch, care to open the trapdoor? I do not relish climbing down into it, but maybe we might get an idea of the kinds of creatures that roam around here?"

Hatch flips the door open easily. Beyond is a slim burrow -- maybe 5' across at best -- that goes almost straight down into the ground. It is filled with soft, slightly sticky webbing, and quite dark.

Vance says, "Hrm. If the spider dragged any bodies down thar, any valuables might be damaged if we were t'burn th' webs out."

Cassandra was stunned speechless. Honestly she expected more of a reaction. Was Valeska odd or was that the same reaction the others would have? There is no time to question it though as Korinne comes over. Out of habit, Cassandra turns slightly away even though she was back to human form. "Nothing really," she says noncommittally. "Let's see if Hatch is right." She quickly walks past Korinne and over to the hole.

"Huh...okay then," Korinne shrugs, still looking slightly puzzled but apparently willing to take Cassandra's word for it. She too turns her attention to the spider's burrow. "It would probably be safest to try and tie off a rope somewhere and climb down. Like Vance said, if there's anything of value down there we might ruin it if we just start throwing fire down there."

"Well..." Telmarni squats next to the hole and peers down into it. "You do have the rope Cassandra. Want to climb down and see what is down there? Hatch and I can always hold one end of the rope." She turns to Cassandra and gives her a slight smirk.

"Yes but if there is something nice down there you can't get it. Unfortunately the lightest should go so they can be pulled up faster...should something go wrong." Cassandra gathers the used rope from her failed fishing attempt and ties it to whoever steps forward. "Hatch, if something happens pull with all you have."

Together we should be able to pull anyone out really fast. Did someone cast Shield or Mage Armor? If there is time left, they should be the one to go down as dex isn't going to help much.

Korinne cast Mage Armor when we first got to this area, so she should still be good.

"I've got my armor spell on and I'm pretty lightweight, so I can go first," Korinne offers as she steps forward. Once Cassandra has the rope tied to her securely, she also ties Valeska's ribbon to her arm and then moves over to the opening.

"Okay, here I go!" she says cheerfully. "Tzerny can still fly down behind me if he wants...that actually might be useful if something happens. But I think it'll be okay!"

Once the others have a good grip on the rope, she carefully edges into the hole and begins to make her way down...

Climb: 1d20 ⇒ 10 Add or subtract as relevant depending on bonuses for the rope and/or terrain inside the hole.
