Yes -- to the southeast (on the other side of the charnel pile) is a ladder that goes up to a door but also to a platform.

Hiro descends the ladder and whispers to his companions: "I didn't hear anything in that hut, but I would prefer for us to enter one of these huts from the walkway and not while climbing a ladder in a single-file. Let's climb to that platform over there and investigate that hut," he says, pointing to the southeast past the burn pit.

Kenji Raises his fists, ready to open fire should something horrible come out the door.

Campaign maps: Jade Regent | Kingmaker | The Temple of Elemental Evil

The door bursts open easily to reveal a rickety single room filled with a fetid odor and three small, green-skinned humanoids with wide mouths filled with razor-like teeth.

You're no expert in goblin facial expressions, but they look absolutely terrified. One actually hops in the air as you come through the door, screaming unintelligibly.

The goblins are hunched and huddled over as if they were trying to make as little noise as possible. Each one wears tattered, poorly-cured leather armor and holds a small machete-like weapon of inferior manufacture.

Once the door smashes inward, the goblins leap to strike, though they are clearly shaking and comically underprepared.

ohh I probably should have done a diplomacy check

I'll give Magnauk a +2 bonus for the gesture of putting his weapon on the ground, but even without it he hit the DC for modifying the reaction of a hostile creature (DC 25 + creature's Charisma modifier). Note that this takes about a minute, since you're not using swift diplomacy.

Normally "Diplomacy is generally ineffective in combat and against creatures that intend to harm you or your allies in the immediate future," but I don't want to shut down a good-faith effort early in the game when we're still setting the tone!

The goblins look abjectly terrified. They wave their blades menacingly over their heads while jabbering in their odd, guttural language, which Magnauk does not understand. In spite of the language barrier, Magnauk moves slowly, calmly, and deliberately, trying to avoid any misunderstandings. At first the goblins thrust their swords out with nearly every step or motion that Magnauk makes, but slowly they seem to calm down. Unfortunately, the Common tongue doesn't seem to be part of their repertoire.

The best that one of the goblins can manage is, "Go. Go. Go!" in conjunction with a shooing motion.

The goblins never slacken their grips on their small blades, watching very, very suspiciously.

Well... crud does anyone actually SPEAK goblin?

Kenji watches Magnauk's actions with incredulity at first, which quickly changes to awe as it actually worked. He opens his fists and lowers his hands. He didn't have a weapon in hand anyways, but he'd be the most capable of reacting should it return to violence.

Do these look like noncombatants? I mean Kenji's seen goblins ready to fight, do these look like... well, villagers who grabbed up weapons? It's possible they were being quiet and hoping we'd go away.

Campaign maps: Jade Regent | Kingmaker | The Temple of Elemental Evil

Kenji's knowledge of fighting technique is, shall we say, limited. The goblins appear to be extremely nervous and upset. They also look like they have huge saw-toothed maws and crude machete-like implements made for hacking up people. So it's kind of a wash.

Hiro struggles to maintain his stoic expression at Magnauk's words, the momentary widening of the samurai's eyes the only outward sign of his incredulity at the half-orc's actions.

"While I respect your desire for diplomacy, do not underestimate these creatures," Hiro urgently whispers to Magnauk. "They may seem harmlessly comical, but they are viciously sadistic and would not hesitate to slit our throats and feast on our flesh if they outnumbered us. They are a valid threat to the community of Sandpoint - the community you've sworn to protect," Hiro adds, maintaining his grip on his drawn katana as he warily glances about to make sure more goblins are not sneaking up on the group.

The sneer on Lyraesel's face is one of unbridled rage and hatred. The fact that she would have a chance to stop the goblins from threatening the town, from hurting other people was a major reason why she'd volunteered so quickly.

And now this lumbering half-orc was trying to make friends with them. They would stab him as soon as his back was turned. Trembling with rage she holds her position, watching for the faintest sign of aggression.

"There is no reasoning with these monsters, the only good goblin is a dead one." she says in a growl.

Campaign maps: Jade Regent | Kingmaker | The Temple of Elemental Evil

The goblin saying "Go! Go! Go!" starts to become very agitated. He waves his small chopping weapon, shouts several times in the goblin language, and makes poking motions in the direction of the party.

Not knowing what the goblins are saying makes it impossible for Magnauk to know what they want, and the goblin seems to become increasingly flustered, then lets out a high-pitched, keening scream, tightens its grip on its weapon, and charges at the paladin.

We'll keep the same initiative order, which means that Magnauk has just enough time to scoop up his sword before the angry goblin is upon him. Since Magnauk couldn't understand the goblin language he didn't really have any way to know what they wanted and to comply with their demands or offer a compromise, so the Unfriendly goblins have decided to eject the party from their domicile in the usual fashion common to goblins. Good try on the diplomacy; next time make sure you speak the language. ;)

As the goblins brandish their weapons, scream, and start to charge, Kenji reflexively launches a bolt of fire through the doorway, and it blasts one of the goblins in the band. The goblin is caught full-on in the face and reels from the blast!

Goblin 01 is staggered, so he won't charge. Really, he couldn't charge anyway because Magnauk is only 5' away. Instead he moves to the door in the other corner.

Lyraesel lets loose a wolf-like howl -- a bit unnerving to her associates, perhaps -- and takes on a feral mein.

The other two goblins charge the doorways, maybe trying to plug the gaps into their house, or maybe just frenzied at the adventurers. Magnauk brings his readied sword across one, cutting it hard, while Hiro slashes down on the other, sending it reeling to the ground in a spray of blood.

I moved Magnauk into the building because otherwise he's outside on the ground, five feet below the goblin, which does nobody any good. ;)

Jinda prepares his spell as Magnauk brings his sword down in a finishing blow.

Though the group is just about to breathe easy, a door on the other side of the village slams open, and another group of angry goblins emerges!

These goblins will enter the initiative order at the same point as their fellows, so Magnauk kills the goblin in front of him, then Kenji, Lyraesel, and Hiro can all decide how to react as the additional goblins arrive. I'm adding the new goblins to the map. Normally you'd do nothing on your turn and then the goblins would come out on their turn, but that doesn't seem very fair, does it?
