"I haven't done anything!" Vankor protests. He lifts his hands defensively. "Really, just the shopping for parts and a bite to eat in town yesterday! That's it!"

The angry townsperson screams, "LIAR! Maressa saw you! She saw you with my Eloran, under the bridge!"

Vankor says anxiously, "I don't know who 'Eloran' is! I've never met anyone with that name and I certainly wouldn't be loitering under a bridge!"

The angry townsman, still restrained by two of his fellows, starts shouting incoherently and then sobs start to wrack his body. "Why?!? Why?!?" he shouts.

"Listen," says one of the other townsfolk in a more conciliatory tone, "Unless you want trouble, you best leave him behind and be on your way. Don't make this worse than it has to be. An' I guarantee if you try to run, none of you better ever come back to Wolf's Ear again."

Ameiko emerges from a wagon and says, "Whoa, no need for all the shouting. Let's settle this down as best we can, no fighting needed."

Sandru adds, "Look, we really don't want any trouble, but we need all of our caravan drivers!"

One of the townspeople says in an unpleasant tone, "You might have trouble hiring someone new here, after this. Your boy there killed his daughter."

If anyone wants to try Diplomacy or Intimidation, now would be a good time. ;)

"Please, if everyone would calm down, I'm sure we can get to the bottom of this," Hiro says in a calm but firm voice, raising his hands in a placating manner.

"Goodsir, I am very sorry for the loss of your daughter, and you have my sincere condolences," Hiro says to the distraught man. The samurai directs his next words to the rest of the townspeople. "We are humble travelers from Sandpoint, and we wish you - the good people of Wolf's Ear - no ill will. I can assure you that we have no knowledge of this the poor girl's death. However, if there is evidence of foul play in her death, it may be a sign of some malevolent force beginning to threaten your town. A few years ago our town's peace was shattered by a serial killer. Several of our friends and family were killed before our current sheriff put an end to the madman's reign of terror. None of us would want your good town to suffer under such a curse. Would you allow us to investigate the cause of poor Eloran's death in order to assure you of Vankor's innocence? If there is something evil threatening your town, hopefully we can put an end to it before anyone else is harmed."

The crowd seems to grumble uncomfortably as you make your statements. Eventually several of the townsfolk pull the screaming and distraught man away.

One of the folks who seemed a bit more reasonable comes a bit closer, though he looks quite cautious and nervous while doing so. He says, "Listen, strangers, Wolf's Ear has its share of trouble. If you decide you wanna wander around the town, you're inviting people to take issue with you. From what I've heard it's pretty straightforward. Mistress Maressa was doing her laundry at the river near where it meets the lake and she saw your fellow there comin' to the east bridge with Eloran, all gigglin' and such. They go under the bridge and start gettin' a bit of the romantic, if you get me. Well, Mistress Maressa ain't the kind to spy on people's private business so she went on her way, but when Eloran didn't come home her pa went lookin'. Eventually a bunch o' us got lanterns and searched the area an' we found her bodice and skirts, all torn up and bloody, caught in the reeds at the mouth of the lake. To be clear: For this murder mystery (yay!), if you want to search parts of the town, you either need to convince one of the townspeople to do it for you, or you need to use stealth! If you are caught wandering around town, especially near the murder site, some of the angry townsfolk probably won't take it well.

"Even if it is wolves, what was the story with Vankor and this young woman? The timing seems odd. And look... Vankor's not distraught like he's lost a love; he's sweating and sick-looking like he's worried for his life. He certainly should be, but if he really was romantically involved with this woman, wouldn't his reaction be different? So that seems to lend weight to his claim that he didn't know her. Which makes things even stranger! If we want to get to the bottom of this we'll need to talk to that witness -- Mistress Maressa -- and figure out how she saw Vankor doing something that doesn't seem to fit," Ameiko says.

It seems that recent events are all the talk of the town. Kenji manages to loiter around in a few alleys, at the open-air market, and near the butcher's shop for a while, and overhears (in separate snippets of conversations):

* "It's so awful! They still haven't found the body. I hear that her bodice was all cut up and ripped apart. Do you think that stranger savaged her as well?"

* "Mistress Maressa said that she saw them cavorting right around sunset. Romantic... and a perfect time to kill someone without being noticed!"

* "Them wandering caravans are always full of thieves and criminals. I'm just surprised this hasn't happened sooner. We should just kick them out -- if they stick around there will be more killings!"

* "Varek's gonna make himself a posse and kill that fat man himself if those strangers don't leave tonight. Gonna be a bloody moon."

And in town...

In addition to eavesdropping on conversations, Kenji notices that the aggrieved townsman who claims that his daughter was murdered is at the Silver Moon, a local tavern, seething with resentment and whipping up anger among anyone who'll listen. -Posted with Wayfinder

Campaign maps: Jade Regent | Kingmaker | The Temple of Elemental Evil

Yes! You can use your knowledge of bars and bar culture to do a lot of things in this situation.

DC 10: You can sneak in the backdoor of the Silver Moon without requiring a Stealth check. You can come and go freely via the back door during normal operating hours without anyone commenting on your presence as long as your face is concealed (i.e. you wear a low-brimmed hat or hooded cloak) and you are carrying something that looks like it makes sense (a keg, a basket of bread, etc.).

DC 15: You can gain access to the kegs at the Silver Moon. This could allow you to drug them, empty them, befoul them, or whatnot. This might cause other problems later if your involvement is discovered.

DC 20: As DC 10 above, but you also can access the common room of the tavern freely by posing as a laborer, with the usual caveat that you need to keep your face concealed and you have to look like you are doing something that makes sense for the location. Everyone will just assume you're an itinerant laborer and not connect you to the caravan.

You may choose to take 10 on this roll as long as you are not under duress; that is, since you are trained in the profession, you can always hit the DC 10 and 15 marks unless a fight breaks out or you draw attention to yourself.

Kenji sneaks in to the Silver Moon tavern and, disguised as a common worker, spikes the cask of late seasonal beer that the angry mob has been drinking. He sticks around in back, sweeping up and cleaning dishes, long enough to see the results of his handiwork, as the common room starts to be filled with the rip-roaring sounds of flatulence, followed by a general air of discomfort and a hasty exit by the various unhappy townsfolk.

This buys you time, because the angry townsfolk are delayed at least a day in any plans they might have to form a lynch mob.

~~~~~~~~~~
Lyraesel and Shalelu, meanwhile, head north to the river, then follow the riverbank toward the lake. Whenever they spot villagers or boat traffic, they hide in the rushes and weeds of the river. It's slow, muddy work, but it does allow them to evade notice.
Shalelu: Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
Lyraesel: Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
The two women spend several hours in the muck and mire. You find more than your fair share of discarded pieces of old clothing -- nothing related to the missing woman -- along with pieces of old storage crates, broken crockery, and discarded broken tools, all washed down the river until they become stuck in some muddy pool en route to the lake.
You sneak underneath the western bridge; based on what little you've seen of the town, there are two bridges connecting the north and south sides of town. The east bridge is closer to the lake, while the west bridge is on the far side of town near the road. Following the river, you get within sight of the east bridge, and Shalelu stops, crouches, and points. "There -- you see that?" In the middle of the river is a small stand of grass but it looks like there's a glistening spiderweb tangled at the base of it. "That's not a web, that's hair," Shalelu whispers.
You ford the water, which goes up to your chest, and reach the middle of the river. Sure enough, there's a badly-torn-up woman's body, wearing only her undergarments and weighted down with stones tied to the corpse. Her long hair, however, has floated up and tangled among the weeds, and you spotted the glint of it in the light of the afternoon.
~~~~~~~~~~

At the caravan, Sandru says, "I know Vankor and Bevelek quite well. They've been on the road with me for a long time now. If Vankor says he didn't do this, I believe him."

Vankor wipes his forehead with a kerchief, glancing at Magnauk, of whom he is now obviously terrified. "How can I prove that I'm innocent?" he asks.

Koya says to Magnauk, "If he didn't do it... then the killer is still out there and needs to be brought to justice somehow!"

Her face taking on a dark expression, Lyraesel stares at the woman's mutilated body bristling with anger. This was clearly not the work of an animal, and the person responsible was cunning, hoping to dispose of the girl's body where none were likely to find it.

The young druidess could feel the anger burning through her. This wasn't an act of nature, a creature hunting for food or to protect it's territory, this was the work of some sick evil monster who had to be hunted down and killed.

"No animal did that." she growls, shaking with rage.

In town...

Kenji is taking a roundabout route along the south side of town as he heads back toward the caravan, when he sees a familiar face -- a slim, athletic, handsome man with a charming visage, just shaking hands with the baker and accepting a bundle of bread-loaves. Based on the shamisen that he has just strapped to his back, he made some kind of exchange of performance for goods -- and Kenji recognizes the man as one who often frequented the Rusty Dragon; a traveling performer named Koan, another expatriate who considered the Dragon a "home away from Tian" and who sometimes even played duets with Ameiko on warm nights.

The aroma was pleasant though not as powerful as it would have been had he been using his true nose but it was enough to distract him from the burdened young man that settles into a pace beside him.

Koan gives a little half-jump as he recognizes Kenji out of the corner of his violet eyes while the humor plays across the younger man's face and into his quiet voice. Koan reaches up to brush a stray lock of black bangs from his eyes as he returns Kenji's smile, "Oh Kenji, you really did give me a surprise there. What brings you to Wolf's Ear? Won't your dear sister miss you from the Dragon?"

"Yeah..." Kenji mutters. "Not gonna work. I saw the father of the victim. He doesn't care who really did it. He's angry and drunk, and whats worse, he can make people listen to him.."

I shall assume that you two gents make it back to the caravan so that we can do introductions and such. :)

At the caravan, the mood is tense. Shalelu watches suspiciously as Kenji brings back someone she doesn't know. Deborah peeks out from the fortune-teller's wagon but stays just inside the door, while Koya stands on the steps looking pensive.

Ameiko seems quite pleased to see Koan, though. "Well this is a turn of luck!" she says cheerfully as Kenji brings the young man to the caravan. "Did Kenji tell you what's been going on? We are trying to clear our names from this accusation of murder, but we can't exactly do that if we can't show our faces in town. Koan, will you help us? The townsfolk here in Wolf's Ear seem friendly enough to you. Maybe they'll let you look around and ask questions without having to sneak about."

"Things just got worse." Lyraesel says without preamble. "Shalelu and I found the girl's body," she says to Ameiko in a low tone. "Definitely not the work of a wild animal. Whoever did this to her was.....just....wrong...evil. They hid her body in the river, tied stones to her to keep her from floating." she continues her eyes blazing with anger. "We talked about what to do. If we find her body, they'll think we're guilty. Shalelu suggested you might be the best person to decide what to do now, and I agree."

Ameiko looks troubled at Lyraesel's report, chews her lip for a moment, then says, "If Koan can help us, well, the townsfolk don't think he was involved at all. I thing we need to figure out if there's some way to establish whether Vankor was actually involved. We also need to get the whole story straight from that Mistress... Maressa, was it?"

She paces back and forth for a moment, then says, "If it does turn out to be some kind of monster or murderer, we may well have to track it down ourselves and deal with it. And to do that we have to figure out what it is, then lure it here... and find a way to prove to the townspeople that whoever it was, was the real culprit, not us!"

She laughs once and says, "We've got our work cut out for us, and if we do have to find this killer and entice it to come back, that's probably going to be up to you and Shalelu, since you're the ones best at sneaking out and finding tracks."

Lyraesel nods thoughtfully. "Then we need to figure out why it chose her as...prey. Whatever or whoever it is will only come out to hunt. Food was clearly not what it was after unless it got interrupted." she says darkly, the implication clear. "She wasn't wearing much when she was killed."

Magnauk glares at Vankor and then turns to Koya, I do not believe that he is responsible. I do not detect evil intent from him, but you are right there is a killer but we also have a possible mob to worry about. My talents may well be suited to the protection of the caravan. I also may have talents at interviewing any others maybe the witness.

Magnauk listens to the tale of the hidden body and his stomach turns in disgust. By the gods this evil must be found and dealt with harshly.

I will do whatever is needed to get this evil. I have interviewed Vankor and do not believe he is involved. He does not seem to have evil in him and I believe he is telling the truth.

"That's right," Shalelu says in response to Lyraesel's comment, "Since the body wasn't eaten, this wasn't just some animal. It was some kind of thinking creature that killed either for pleasure, or to hide something."
