Dantrian Almaeus |
"Anything could be in those jars, sealed as they are, Janos. As for the smell of mimic, Mister LeClerc is correct: it was produced by a mimic, specifically the one we encountered upstairs. It seems it arrived here in that crate and it's likely some of the other curiosities we've seen were brought here in similar fashion."
Dantrian frowns at the jars then shakes his head. He turns back to the door, "I suggest we resume our search for the Count and the Beast. The jars, while intriguing, worry me more than not."
DM Jelani |
Only way forward at this point is up the ledge to the last set of buildings.
The Stretching Way is an exposed, winding, narrow pathway that climbs the bare rock face to a set of buildings 50 feet above.
A DC 10 Climb check is required to ascend the Stretching Way, as there are no handrails or guide ropes. A failed Climb check results in a fall into the lower river 150 to 200 feet below.
Dantrian Almaeus |
A low growl rumbles in the back of Dantrian's throat as he surveys the rocky path. He leads the way, battered and bruised as his companions already are. As he moves along, his claws gouging into the stone cliff face for purchase, he does his best to remain alert for an ambush or other such troubles.
Climb (take 10): 10 + 5 = 15
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Dantrian Almaeus |
Dantrian regards the door briefly before turning back to the others. "Might one of you ensure the door is not magically warded before I try to force it?" He points to the towers above, "That is not a climb I'd care to attempt."
Should the door be void of magics, Dantrian attempts to wrench it open.
Strength Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
B'yelka Morfaine |
Wanna bet this will be about the last time we use Climb? I am about to put a rank into it! lol Can someone help out with an Aid Another until then?
B'yelka looks at the causeway with trepidation. "Ah, boys, this does not look good. Can one of you lend me a shoulder to keep me in a lady-like position?" She smiles sweetly, the picture of a damsel-in-distress.
Anton Klasnic |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Climb: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14
Anton very slowly and very carefully edge along the ledge, his back pressed firmly to the wall. At the midway point, his foot slips and he sends a stone hurtling down into the watery cascade but he holds his nerve and progresses on, finally reaching the other side with a sigh of relief.
It's not as bad as it looks, B'yelka. Just take it slowly and don't look down. The wall behind you is pretty rough so you can actually take hold of it in parts.
Climb aid another: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6
Lol don't follow Anton's advice, he's being very optimistic!
Drosil the Grey |
Drosil nods at Anton's comment, gazing at the view himself. "True, this journey has definitely led us far from our childhood homes..."
He makes his way easily across the bridge (Climb (Take 10): 10 + 8 = 18) and attaches his rope of climbing to anything that looks fairly sturdy. He then sends it back to the doorway where B'yelka sits waiting. "There you are, B'yelka - it's no shoulder, granted, but I hope it will do the trick."
Once everyone is across, he retrieves his rope and checks the door for traps.
B'yelka Morfaine |
B'yelka cringes as Anton grabs part of the wall and it comes free in his hand. "No. I think it may be easier to wait here and shout encouragement..." Her voice sounds like she's joking, but her face says otherwise-She might even be terrified. I know I won't die, but... how would I get back up?
Janos Ardeal |
Janos follows the others, bringing up the rear. He moves carefully and purposefully but the climb gives him little trouble as he's more accustomed to the uneven ground of the swamp which can be worse. When he sees B'yelka having issues, he tries to help her hang on to Drosil's Rope of Climbing to help her on his way. "Come on, Red. Can't have you ruining that dress in the water again."
Janos takes 10 on on the Climb check for a 13.
Aid Another: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Janos Ardeal |
If Dantrian still has his mutagen, he is by far the strongest. Even without it, he's equal to Janos.
When Dantrian has a firm grip on the door, Janos tries to help the man pry the doors open.
Str Check, Aid: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Dantrian Almaeus |
Yup! Still wolfed out.
Feeling the resilience of the door after his first attempt, a low growl rumbles in Dantrian's throat. "A concerted effort then. I will need coordinated aid if we are to breach this door."
Strength Check (take 20): 20 + 5 = 25
with Janos' aid, we just need two more?
Drosil the Grey |
Strength: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Drosil, try as he might, cannot stop favoring his leg, despite the fact that the damage was healed in its majority last night. As such, he can't get the leverage he needs to assist.
Anton Klasnic |
With the two strongest members of the group bracing themselves against the door, Anton squeezes between them and takes hold himself, lending his own weight to the effort.
Take 10: 10 + 2 = 12
DM Jelani |
I don't think you can really take 20 on a strength check, but whatever. We'll just say it takes two minutes to get the door open with all the boys tugging. Who the hell makes a DC 28 strength check-to-open-door anyway? (>_>)*
The doorway opens with a screech and a flood of water comes pouring out. Inside is a step down, into three feet of water. The Six find themselves in a long rectangular chamber. Directly in front of them is a stairway going upwards to the towers above them, but it is blocked with caved-in rubble. Everyone except Drosil can't see much more than that in the light spilling in from the doorway. The fetchling's eyes pierce the dark interior and he can see a set of double doors on the east end of the hallway. It looks as if there are probably another set on the western end of the hallway as well.
We're switching to Roll20 for maps folks. This is 1000% easier for me when doing updates. It does take some set up though. Each of you please go to this link:Roll20 and sign in. Set your name to your character name, and then I'll give you control of your token. I have the dynamic lighting option, so the light will change when you move your token based on what your character would see. The humans are definitely going to want some light in here. Once someone gets/creates some, I'll add it to the map.
Dantrian Almaeus |
I have an account, but won't be able to join our game there until I get home from work much later tonight (office Christmas party is tonight)
I try to include all Dantrian's statuses (I'm finding alchemists are rather heavy on the bookkeeping) including the traits he takes on with his mutagen in his Status spoiler, but it's been a few posts since I've reposted it.

Anton Klasnic |
I can't see anything in here. Anton whispers, wary of the sudden darkness. Can anyone share some light?
I have signed up for Roll20 but not sure what to do next. Do you need to invite me to the game Jelani?
Janos Ardeal |
I've signed up. Where's that lighted coin?
Janos squints in the darkness even though his father's elven eyes give him an advantage over the pure humans. "Dros, Dantrian? See anything in here?"
Dantrian Almaeus |
I've joined as well now.
"It looks like a collapse, though I think I can make out doors across the room. Vorkstag and Grine's factory still has me leery of standing water such as this, however. I'd advise caution before proceeding."
The unexpected thought of the intelligent undead suddenly sours Dantrian's mood, and the fur along the back of his neck bristles as he goes quiet.
Dantrian Almaeus |
Perception (w/ scent): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
Dantrian slowly steps into the water, holding a hand up for the others to wait until he's ensured the waist-deep waters are safe. He moves to the left a few feet, testing the unseen floor while listening for trouble.
updated position on the map - amazingly, Roll20 works (albeit a bit clumsily) on my iphone!

Janos Ardeal |
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17
Despite Dantrian's instructions, Janos splashes into the water as well. He only moves a few feet after the alchemist though, looking up and down the corridor. "Bring the light closer, B'yelka." The Ranger digs into his pack, retrieving his own sunrod.
Janos has low-light vision, so I think he should be able to see more from the glow of the light.
Tibideau Maroon LeClerc |
Tibideau waits until the last possible second to enter the water with his companions. He sighs loudly. "Looks like I'll be making a trip to the cobbler after this mess." He decides to see what he can with B'yelka and Janos's light, not wanting to draw attention to his ponytail holder after the incident with the spider ages ago.
Janos Ardeal |
Seeing no immediate threats, Janos lights his sunrod as well. "Here, this should help too."
He nods to Dantrian. "Left seems as good direction as any. How far forward of the group do you want to go?"
Light a sunrod.
