B'yelka thinks about the goblins and trolls, the holy symbol and why they were all here. Maybe the way needed Aaron for something more than... "I am worried about Aaron! Aaron was used by someone to steal that see-sage statue, and now the symbol of the very same organization that 'stole' the spirits from Harrowstone has shown up here, at Aaron's 'father's' Chateau. What if the Way followed Aaron here, or if they are still here. Were the trolls just moving into an abandoned gatehouse or... were they to keep something in?"

Drosil moves to the door and begins working at it with his lockpicks.

Taking 20 nets him a 37..which is more than enough...duh.

After a couple of minutes of fiddling with the tumblers and lock, Drosil manages to produce a satisfying click. The lock is open. Moving to the front of the group the boys prepare to open the door. Once they are in position, Janos pulls open the double doors. Unfortunately, Drosil missed a magical trap that was expertly hidden on them. A huge portal to another plane tears open in the air beside them on the bridge. A towering, cloud-like creature with dark hollows reminiscent of eyes and a mouth emerges from the portal, and a howling wind whips it into ominous shape.

Begin Round 1

The elemental roars with the primal fury of a winter storm, and slams one huge fist of whirling wind and dust into Dantrian. The alchemist goes flying off the bridge like a rag doll thrown by an angry child. His body tumbles through the air, bouncing off the cliff repeatedly on its way down before slamming into the foaming water at the base of the falls.

I have 8 temporary hp thanks to false life.
First 5 damage is converted to non-lethal due to ablative barrier.
As soon as I fall unconscious (which I don't in this case as my effective hp is equal to 60), my spontaneous healing auto-activates and heals me for 5 (which heals lethal and non-lethal at the same time).

Maintaining consciousness despite the tremendous plummet, Dantrian's wolfish face sputters to the surface as he fights to swim free from the pounding of the falls. Even from this far away, he casts a baleful glare back up toward the bridge as his wounds begin to knit themselves of their own accord.

Free action: activate spontaneous healing (heal 5 lethal and 5 non-lethal as fast healing 5)

Watching Dantrian fall down into the rushing torrent below, and seeing the elemental in all its glory, only one word escapes the witch's mouth. "F**K." "No!" B'yelka's shout becomes a resonating note that wraps around her friends and herself, buoying them up against the fatal pull of the river below. The Diva is pleased with herself that Dantrian's fall is much slower than the Strong Breeze had hoped.

Featherfall on all of us; target is one creature/level, and we are all close by...Except Tibi :) He's nowhere to be seen!

Wanting nothing to do with the Breeze that threw Dan from the span, B'yelka steps back away from the elemental, and then moves towards the gatehouse. As she scurries back towards the gates behind her, she mutters, "This country! Even things that should be beautiful are haunted and lethal! Get inside! Get inside or we're dead!

Withdraw to within the manor house if possible

Withdraw wrote:

Withdrawing from melee combat is a full-round action. When you withdraw, you can move up to double your speed. The square you start out in is not considered threatened by any opponent you can see, and therefore visible enemies do not get attacks of opportunity against you when you move from that square. Invisible enemies still get attacks of opportunity against you, and you can't withdraw from combat if you're blinded. You can't take a 5-foot step during the same round in which you withdraw.

If, during the process of withdrawing, you move out of a threatened square (other than the one you started in), enemies get attacks of opportunity as normal.

You may not withdraw using a form of movement for which you don't have a listed speed.

Note that despite the name of this action, you don't actually have to leave combat entirely.

So moving into the house would provoke at least 2 AOOs for you before you get out of its reach Anton. B'Yelka on the other hand, is fine.

lol, firing a ranged weapon in melee also provokes, Anton. You may want to leap off the bridge and join Dantrian in the water! =P =)

Dantrian, expecting the surface of the water to be rather unyielding as he tumbles end over end through the air, is mildly surprised to feel his fall slowly and gently arrested as he approaches the churning waters beneath him. He shakes the vision he had of him crashing into the tumbling falls from his mind and proceeds to swim for shore as he slips into the river.

Previous action of swimming still stands, but now Dantrian is uninjured. Yay for B'yelka! =D

Combat Reflexes and Additional Attacks of Opportunity: If you have the Combat Reflexes feat, you can add your Dexterity bonus to the number of attacks of opportunity you can make in a round. This feat does not let you make more than one attack for a given opportunity, but if the same opponent provokes two attacks of opportunity from you, you could make two separate attacks of opportunity (since each one represents a different opportunity). Moving out of more than one square threatened by the same opponent in the same round doesn't count as more than one opportunity for that opponent. All these attacks are at your full normal attack bonus.

So, that said, are we going inside or jumping?

Ah, word, Drosil. Didn't realize that. Not often I get to run a creature with large reach and combat reflexes AND high dex.

Need Drosil's actual action. Tibideau is inside the schloss now. B'Yelka heading for the gate house. Dantrian is in the water, Anton's shooting it and Janos is cutting it. "We're" not runnning inside or jumping. Everyone seems to be doing their own thing.

Now that B'yelka has Feather Fall on everyone, should we take it on? I don't think we'll do much of anything if we fight it on the bridge because it will just push us into the water one by one. Then the fight will be over, even if nobody takes any damage. Side note, it just occurred to me... I can Feather Fall at will because of the Flight Hex. End Round 1
=============================
Begin Round 2

The creature roars with fury of a mighty storm and begins whirling in place. Within seconds it has formed itself into a mighty fifty foot tall cyclone. The cyclone then rolls over Janos, Anton, Drosil and B'Yelka with all the fury of nature. It bludgeons and buffets them, sweeping Janos, Drosil and B'Yelka up into its funnel, whipping them about and slamming them into each other while holding them off the ground. The whirlwind carries them back off the bridge and over the water below.

Damage to Janos: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14
Damage to Anton: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3) + 6 = 10

Janos, Drosil and B'Yelka are caught in the whirlwind. Creatures trapped in the whirlwind cannot move except to go where the whirlwind carries them or to escape the whirlwind. Trapped creatures can otherwise act normally, but must succeed on a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) to cast a spell. Creatures caught in the whirlwind take a –4 penalty to Dexterity and a –2 penalty on attack rolls. The whirlwind can have only as many creatures trapped inside at one time as will fit inside the whirlwind’s volume. The whirlwind can eject any carried creatures whenever it wishes as a free action, depositing them in its space. Creatures inside automatically take slam damage each round. A creature that can fly is allowed a Reflex save each round to escape the whirlwind. The creature still takes damage but can leave if the save is successful.

You guys are up. Dantrian you need one more swim action to get to the cliff. Then it's a 200 foot climb at DC 15. Those of you inside it are pretty much screwed for the next 4 rounds since none of you can fly, unless you can kill it from within then swim to safety.

Can I use a hero point to regain a use of a daily ability, namely my mutagen? If so, I'd like to do so and then spend a standard action activating the new mutagen, but instead of scent and darkvision have swim and climb speeds of 30.

No, because I don't see how you could do that. It's not like recalling a spell or something, it'd take 30 minutes to brew. Also a mutagen isn't daily, it's whenever you have 30 minutes to brew it. Sorry :/

retired (arc completed)

Ok then. In that case I'm sidelined indefinitely as that's not a climb check I can make considering the height.

Also, I had intended to pull myself up out of the water on the northern cliff last round, not swim across the entire river - unless the northern cliff is different than the southern and I couldn't?

Swim (if still needed): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 rolls like this are why I'm trapped, and it's not even a terrible roll! ugh!

The cliffs are the same. I just assumed southern for some reason. I can put you at the base of the northern cliff. But, essentially, yeah you're right. This fight is really brutal. Someone told me today there are a lot of complaints about it on the Carrion Crown messageboards. Dantrian's best bet without some kind of flight/levitate/teleport is to float down river a ways where the cliffs are lower, climb out and walk back. But as you say, that still takes you out of the fight. He might be the only one who doesn't die (>_>)*

Dantrian and Tibideau carry everyone's bodies to reincarnated? :(

retired (arc completed)

I have an open level 2 extract slot I can use for levitate, but even if the conditions were fair enough for me to brew it, it'd take a full minute to do so - which is an eternity during a fight like this. Add to that all the time it'd take to ascend 200 feet and the fight'll be long since decided by then. Yeeesh!

Regardless, I'll stay put for the time being as it's not as if Dantrian can see everyone bouncing around inside a cyclone from his position beneath the bridge or hear them over the falls behind him.

"I...I...I don't know what to do!" Tibideau replies, his usual exaggerated melodrama replaced by sincere panic. His invisible face looks grave as he throws up his hands and shakes his head. "I think you should just jump," he suggests bluntly. "We can't help them. B'yelka's magic will stop you from hurting yourself. I can get to the bottom safely and the three of us can try to think of something," he gulps, "Even if it's finding a way to revive the three of them."

Tibideau flies 120 feet, as far as he can. He double moves, flying out of the building and down toward Dantrian's position. He has to move about 20 feet before he can start flying down, so he goes down 100 feet from AJ34-bridge level toward AS36-ground level. Does that make sense?

The creature roars with fury of a mighty storm and begins whirling in place. Within seconds it has formed itself into a mighty fifty foot tall cyclone. The cyclone then rolls over Janos, Anton, Drosil and B'Yelka with all the fury of nature. It bludgeons and buffets them, sweeping Janos, Drosil and B'Yelka up into its funnel, whipping them about and slamming them into each other while holding them off the ground. The whirlwind carries them back off the bridge and over the water below.

Seeing himself as the last one on the bridge, Anton backs inside the manse. "TIBIDEAU!" he roars. "Are you still here? Is there anything you can do to that creature?!"

"I'm going," he continues, his voice cracking. "I'm sorry if I failed you. I hope to see you down there." As he passes by Anton, he squeezes the paladin's shoulder. "HURRY!" he shouts desperately, his eyes brimming with tears.

"Going... what do you mean?! Damn your eyes! That thing is going to tear them apart!" he feels the hand on his shoulder and he reaches out to grab it. "Wait...!" But the witch is gone. Damn it what do I do? I can't jump! Even if B'yelka's magic does protect me I'll drown in the bloody river! Desna curse that thing!

Now inside the manse, Anton begins preparing to fight for his life. He casts a spell on himself to sharpen his senses and reaction time, and increase his confidence.

It's a stage, fool girl! You know what to do, the chiding voice of Madame Renau is like a clarion bell in B'yelk'a's mind. Suddenly her shortened hair, the howling breeze, the dizzying height all fade to the side as if the facts were all imagined - this moment was more than all of those things. Time to shine! You saved Dantrian, but he isn't here to save you now! First the Diva tries to focus on a spell to help Janos and Drosil to kill this thing - * Shazktardri GuhlNAHK *. Then she brings her voice up, the wind tears it away but not before it has the desired effect of fortifying her allies.

Drosil stops loading the crossbow and quickly grabs a flask from his belt pouch and drinks it.

Janos twists inside the whirlwind, trying to find some essence of the elemental to strike. The ranger finds himself near the core of the storm and lashes out viciously as B'yelka's song takes hold. He strikes two mighty blows against the core of the elemental, damaging it badly.

The elemental flies out over the falls, the sickening drop yawning below it. The three heroes trapped inside continue to be battered and bashed against each other.

Tibideau - You're ~130' over Dantrian's head now.

It has 25 HP left. 22 AC.

Slam on B'yelka: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14
Slam on Janos: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1) + 6 = 11
Slam on Drosil: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 2) + 6 = 12

You guys are up.

Map

Male Human Paladin 8 | HP 36/53 (68)| AC 18 FF 15 T13 | Saves +11/+10/+10 | Init + 4 | Percep + 2 | Dip +14 | SM +10 | KR +6 | Heal +3 | HA +7 | HePo =0

Shot 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Shot 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Shot 3: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

Unable to do anything but fire ineffectually at the creature, Anton curses long and loud.

The poor rolls with this character are really starting to get to me.

-frowns and wrinkles his brow-

Female Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Diva) 8 | HP 51 | AC 19 FF 17 T13 | Saves +3/+8/+6 | Init + 8 | Percep +11

*sigh* I understand all too well... :/ but why are you only adding three? You should at least get my Inspire Courage :) )

Gunna see how well Janos does and then decide my action :) I may just CLW myself on the drift to the river ;)

True, all those attacks should be two higher.

Male Human Paladin 8 | HP 36/53 (68)| AC 18 FF 15 T13 | Saves +11/+10/+10 | Init + 4 | Percep + 2 | Dip +14 | SM +10 | KR +6 | Heal +3 | HA +7 | HePo =0

Well I figured I wouldn't be able to really see/hear B'yelka in order to benefit from IC but didn't take into account lingering performance. Even so, made no difference in this case.

Male Fetchling (World Walker) Swashbuckler (Inspired Blade) 8 [ HP 65/76 | AC 29/18T/22FF | Fort +6, Ref +13, Will +3 | Init +7 (+2 with panache) | Perception +10 | Panache: 4/4 ]

Nearing unconsciousness, Drosil grabs another potion - his last - and drinks it down quickly, hoping that Anton's arrows will find their mark soon.

Move action: Retrieve stored item (potion)
Standard action: Drink potion
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Half-Elf Spirit Ranger 8 (HP 33/68; F+8, R+8, W+4 (+1 vs. Arcane); AC 25/12/23; Perception +18, Sense Motive +2, Initiative +2)

Janos lets loose a cry of frustration and rage as he tries to kill the elemental again.

Attack (PA, FF, Bard, whirlwind): 1d20 + 11 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 11 + 4 - 2 = 18
Damage (PA, Bard): 1d8 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 11 + 4 = 16

Attack (PA, FF, Bard, whirlwind): 1d20 + 4 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 4 - 2 = 8
Damage (PA, Bard): 1d8 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 11 + 4 = 16

Well...that's really disappointing. Use a Hero Point for a reroll of the main attack.

Attack (PA, FF, Bard, whirlwind): 1d20 + 11 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 11 + 4 - 2 = 25
Damage (PA, Bard): 1d8 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 11 + 4 = 19

Female Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Diva) 8 | HP 51 | AC 19 FF 17 T13 | Saves +3/+8/+6 | Init + 8 | Percep +11

Does that CLW Potion put Drosil to 15, or to 10 HP?

Male Fetchling (World Walker) Swashbuckler (Inspired Blade) 8 [ HP 65/76 | AC 29/18T/22FF | Fort +6, Ref +13, Will +3 | Init +7 (+2 with panache) | Perception +10 | Panache: 4/4 ]

10...yeah, things are getting dicey...

Waiting on Tibideau (and Dan if he wants to do something).
