For "Driving Checks" for a wagon I thought it was "Handle Animal". Does anyone have a good handle animal score?

And the wagon should be large enough to put Xanxan on it, no matter who is driving. But that's just a guess as I'm not positive what size the wagon is.

Okay, I'll be home much later tonight - likely closer to 7:30 PM again. See you all later.

It's a small wagon and after haggling you get the purchase price down to 95 gp. I'm going to move on. If you have any purchases please do so in your next post or assume you were not able to find them in town.

As you proceed south, the air becomes noticeably cooler seeming almost like fall or early spring weather than the height of summer. You find the road easily enough, having traveled it before, skirting the border wood south and east to Zimar.

As you reach the spot where Yuln said the attack took place, you see debris confirming his story. The weather has gotten significantly colder the closer to the woods you have gotten and this close it is hovering just above freezing with a dusting of snow lingering on the ground. The slain remains of humans and horses litter the ground next to an ornate closed carriage, it's team of horses missing or cut free, while another overturned carriage lies sprawled and broken near the tree line. To the south, more bodies have fallen around what appears to be a statue of ice. A snowy trail leads deeper into the forest.

The bodies themselves are pierced with multitudes of tiny needles and slivers of ice and all of them have been stripped of armor and weapons.

I got a +5 and Handle animal is a Trained Only skill, so I think I'm the only one that can use it, unless someone else took ranks in...
-I've also got 99gp 9sp to contrubute, cause before I allocated 70gp to gear and we have 180.
-do we have a loot sheet, cause I can make sheets for WotR and this game tomorrow if we want. And cash spent on this can be rimbursed via a slice off the top of our first adventuring haul.

"This is wrong, this is very very wrong," Beck mutters, looking around. Turning to the group, Beck suggests, "Let's take a coser look around first...then get tracking. Venja, that's a strange place for a statue, and odd that its made of ice... Care to join me and take a look?" the statue strikes Beck as Bazaar and unnatural so he asks Venja, lacking much knowledge of magic himself, he knows his friend has particular talent in this area.

Ok. Spent 77 silver and 5 copper for the winter blanket and an extra cold weather suit. Donated 10 gold to the wagon and steeds if asked.

He has no problem riding on the wagon. He does grumble about the human sized cold weather outfit he purchased, "Whoever did THIS has no sense of design. No style. It's so drab. It screams 'I want to die in the cold unnoticed'... I really must talk to her. If she wants warmth AND style, she really should just come to me exclusively."

As it goes from Summer to spring, he marvels, "This could definitely be work of my cousins. Never met the winter variety."

At THIS, he jumps off the wagon and investigates the body, glad for the cold weather outfit that was, but a moment ago, so blistering warm, now? NOW its is needed.

"Here ,now, bodies have been stripped of arms and armor? Odd thing for winter fey to need. How big are they I wonder to want items of iron and steel?" He examines the needles carefully, and then looks to the other bodies.

The Ice Statue: As you get closer you realize the statue is not a statue at all but a man solidly encased in ice. His arms have broken off into several gruesome pieces melting very slowly on the ground. Under the ice you can see the man had a breastplate bearing the heraldry of your nation: Taldor. On the ground his had still clutches a beautifully made longsword. As you are looking you see the telltale marks of some sort of cutting implement was used to chop off pieces of the man once frozen. As for what sort of creature could have done this, it is consistent with several types of abilities ranging from cold spells to icy breath weapons. You detect residual magical energy but you cannot tell what sort it is.

Masterwork Longsword if you want to break the icy hand off of it. The breastplate is still intact if you can break the ice off of the body and remove it.

Xanxan: As you look around you see broken chests and strewn clothing as well as several dead handmaidens. Among the debris are three sets of courtier's outfits of a design you recognize as Slain Voss, a fairly well known clothier in Oppara. You estimate their worth at around 90 pieces of gold altogether.

would there be a check to figure a good place to make a pyre ti give these peope a send-off?

Beck is thoroughly disgusted by the brutalith and savagery of this attack. While he would rather see the bodies returned to the earth and brought back into the natural cycle, he is especially aware of Gabe's sensativity due to his past. Beck says "We should take some time to buid a Pyre for these people. I'd rather bury them but there's not time for that and they deserve some respect. We can put the items and valuables in the wagon, no sense in wasting it, but then we follow the trail."

Beck will hack away at the ice with either Scimitar or club, whichever works better for it, and then reclaim the brestplate and longsword.

since we had more cash then we forst thought, can I have my Scimitar be cold iron, as I could have afforded it had I more money?

Variel travels alongside the cart keeping watch over the area they are passing through. It was strange to have such problems so near home. He had heard of stories of weird occurances in other places but this was home and not up suppose to happen here. Approaching the site, Variel pauses to don the warm weather outfit he just purchased. Clearly this was not suppose to happen here but like the others he was glad they came prepared.

At the site Variel surveyed the land and the attack trying to determine how many people were involved. Not having much skill in these matters he calls out to the rest for help. Any idea how many people were in the party and how many were attacking?

GM – your post didn’t make it clear if this happened the same night, or if it happened the next day at dawn. There was some back and forth on the topic – what time of day is it and day? Same day only very late at night and therefore dark? Or is it dawn the next day? That will effect some of my rolls and posts below, hence my question.

Gabryjel glances around, damning the lack of light, except by the dull moon.

Noticing tracks, he bends down to examine them closely.

Using Survival to determine type of creature and how long the tracks have been there.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

If there are tracks, there may be enemies – but how many, and how long have they been gone?

He draws his bow and knocks an arrow, glancing around the area carefully.

Perception Check to look at the area, searching for threats
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Seeing Beck hacking at the statue, he moves slowly to him.

He moves to the “Ice Statue” and examines it, instantly recognizing the armor as Taldorian Heraldry because I happened to have “Taldor Parade Armor” from when I was in the service (Parade Armor is really awesome because it’s a pretty good bonus for only 5 GP more – but anyway…).

His eyes are neutral when he looks at it.

Why would Fey strip the dead of their gear and leave what is so obviously valuable gear on this corpse? Whoever dealt with this frozen man had the wherewithal to cut off limbs; why not take the rest of his gear? They clearly took everything else…

If the camp was attacked by magic; then magic may have encased the body in ice – if the camp was stripped of goods I doubt it was by the same folk who used magic. The casters had just trapped rare goods in ice – they didn’t care about those goods…. The gear was stripped, but I would think that was done quickly and by another party, perhaps…

Hearing the comments about burning the bodies he frowns.

The dead are dead – burning bodies will certainly attract enemies… they may even now be fairly close… even torches may be problematic, certainly a bonfire will be…

But he says nothing on the subject, though.

If they choose to burn the bodies, at least there will be light, though…

The sudden noise from the carriages startles him, and his instinct is to shoot first.

But he holds his action.

There may be survivors inside… it would not do to kill them before they are at least questioned…

So he waits to see who is inside.

I'm down with that, Beck. Actually, all the rolls I made are without modifiers to them. We're just waiting on the GM at this point.

Not sure if I'm able to use my bow now. Although I had an arrow out and ready if there were bandits, I think the GM wants us to wait until after he goes. As soon as he posts, I'll take my action.

By the way, GM - there is no battle map that I found - do we know how far we are from these things, it may effect what I do in game. Thanks!

Finally, is drawing an arrow and firing it considered a Move Action and Attack Action, or is just part of the Attack Action? In short, do I need to have quick draw to make shooting an arrow useful? Not for this round, but the future.

Drawing and noching arrows is a non-action, part of shooting. That's how you're able to do a Manyshot, itteratives, and a rapid-shot in one round. It's crossbows firearms and slings that take actions to load. Not bows. So after the Zombies go, you can shoot, cause they go before the rest of us.

Thanks, Beck.

As for the combat - from what it looks like is going on the GM will have to act first. If the GM sticks by his House Rule of whoever posts first goes first, than it means that it's in order of how we post.

But for now, it means that Aneira's action will have to be "bumped" to the first action after the zombie action, since I guess technically she couldn't attack until after the GM rolls for the zombies since they are going in the middle of the round.

But I'm also guessing that since she can't post during the day, she decided to toss up her actions so the GM would see what happens after the zombies went.

As a further aside, I've been calling them "Walkers" because that's what they call zombies in the Walking Dead. Are "White Walkers" an actual monster here, or is that just coincidence?

Moving up he kicks the door open – his bow ready.

Glancing down at the two bodies he leaves the searching of the corpses to others, not really concerned with their goods and gear.

However, GM - do the bodies look like they're wearing native gear, or do they look like they may be wearing gear consistent with the Northman we found earlier?

Essentially a “thumbs-up” sign.

Garbyjel says nothing, aware of Aneira’s response, but mirroring her quiet as best as he can, too, by saying nothing if it isn’t necessary. There was no reason to draw further attention to themselves, if they could help it - there may be other threats out there.

Something does not sit right with him, though.

How did those damn Walkers get in the carriage? That couldn’t be coincidence…

His eyes gleam coldly.

Fool! Either they managed to get inside by accident – unlikely – or they were put there. If someone put them there, they did it for a reason…

His mind tacks back over the event carefully.

We searched the camp – heard noise in the carriage and went to investigate it – then we were attacked… Were those things a trap?

He frowns darkly, the scar aching somewhat.

If that was a trap, there may be others…

Turning back to the others, he moves back slowly and quietly.

Before he could even react, the two forms before him were cut and shot down. Looking for other assailants Variel sees none and lowers the rapier cautiously. I am fine Aneira. They were dispatched before I even had a chance to act. Everything else looks clear here.

Variel sees what the state of the carriage is and if it is possible for the group to right the carriage for a better inspection or salvage later.

The carriage with the white walkers is salvageable but you have no way to transport it currently. Inside you all do find a signet ring set with a hawk in flight with a serpent in it's talons, as well as several pieces of jewelry. There is a pair of earrings, a set of pearl-inlaid bracelets, assorted gold and silver necklaces, and one sapphire pendant.

The jewelry, minus the signet ring, is worth a total of 165 gp.

The white walkers themselves look like they were guards similar to the other bodies you found, they were stripped of weapons and gear.

Looking around you do notice that it is snowing itself but doesnt seem to be snowing too much outside of it.

Exhausted and getting a tooth pulled in the morning. Gotta love not being able to afford the procedures that would make the most medical sense. Getting the tooth pulled $45 getting a root canal and crown $700 which basically means keep the tooth or feed my kids lol. Sorry for venting. Anyway, I'll have an update tomorrow based upon what you all want to do.

"I was amazing, wasn't I? Did you see my stab? And how I inspired others to be equally amazing?" the gnome says with a broad grin.

Actually Xanxan, I saw nothing. It was so fast and quick and over before I could react that I must take your word for it. Clearly what you say is true as the proof is laying there rent from a weapon. Good job my good man. Good job indeed.

Good luck Immortal tomorrow.

I feel your pain Imm... I have had over 3k dollars worth of dental work alone this year. most of that in replacement crowns for previous root canals.

Venja replies to Aneira as her hair shrinks back to its normal length, "I'm fine... what a horrible fate for these people. I hope there aren't more of them lingering about."

Venja casts detect magic and scans the interior of the carriage.

"Gragh, that was revolting. I'm thinking the Pyre would be better than burying now. Save 'em from turning, if there's even a chance of it," Beck really finds he desecration and reanimation of the dead distasteful and uncomfortable. "I can start sussing out where tey went from here, and try to pick out how many there were once i get the Ice dealt with."

Beck finishes his task of freeing the body of the man in the Breastplate and removes it so the body can also be put to rest. He then whistles to Sheelah to start picking out scents to figure out where the lady might have gone, trying to use scraps from the Carrage that may hold her scent just in case Sheelah can pick it up later.
Sheelah's Aid: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Beck's Survival: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 10 + 2 = 24

Gabe, they were dead and frosty, hence white walkers. jsut a joke =P
Beck's got no knowledge of Undead

GM - is there anything that we can do? Please let me know.

Arodus 2nd
Time: Early Morning
Location: By the Carriage

The site was clear, the enemies were dead and some random gold and modest valuables.

Seeing that the threats seem to be eliminated, Gabryjel puts his arrow back into his quiver and slings his bow over his shoulder.

Despite the strange snow drifts, there were no signs of traps or tracks.

GM - if my Survival check of 24 didn’t reveal anything to search for traps; I’m guessing there is nothing there at this point. Unles Beck and Sheelah's work was able to aid me?

Gabryjel looks at Aneira, his eyes searching her to see if she was able to see if she detected any magical gear…

GM - I’m guessing that neither Aneira or Venja found any magical gear given your earlier posting.

With no information on the subject forthcoming, he walks over to the gear and looks through it quickly.

Picking up the ring he examines it closely, his eyes staring at the heraldry on it, but he is not familiar with it.

He tosses it to Variel.

”You have seen heraldry before… do you recognize it?” he asks.

While he waits for an answer, he looks at the sudden appearance of the falling snow.

What is this nonsense? Snow in Arodus? Is it sorcery or the presence of some new menace?

His face is neutral and he turns to Xanxan.

”Your stab was fair… but you are not a warrior.”

”You are better skilled elsewhere.”

He stretches his jaw muscles a bit.

”You are able to search better than fight.”

”That carriage held a threat.”

”Next time search for traps before entering… you are good at searching,” he says, trying to be encouraging.

He looks at Beck attempting to search for tracks after he had already been over the ground and watches him flatly.

”You will not find much.”

”I searched it… there is nothing else.”

Beck, I already got a Survival check of 24 looking for tracks earlier; but there were no tracks to be found. Unless your combined Survival Roll with Sheelah can stack with the earlier roll. If it does, that's awesome, but we'll have to wait for the GM.
