Horatio nods at the orders.

"Right," he says after a moment.

"In which case I guess we set the deck watch and rest."

"Wake me up when we're ready to move forward. If anyone wants me, I'll be in my bunk.." he adds, then walks to the hatch and heads below.

Amen-set watches him for a moment with a worried frown, then glances at Rain and starts to say something to her, but then she closes her mouth and turns and hurries below after Horatio clearly eager to talk to him about something.

Sandara looks at you strangely and says What do you mean while you were gone? You never left. You went through one side of the portal and came right out the other. Are you feeling alright?

She sighed inwardly. "Aye, I am well enough. Thank you, Sandara."

Then she heard the others speaking, but her thoughts were so occupied that she only caught pieces of their conversation.

When Horatio voiced his presence, Rain turned to look as Amen was embracing her guardian. "It is good to see you, Flynn. It seems whatever dream we had was different to yours. I am certain Amen will fill you in on all that transpired with us."

Flynn wrote:

”Well? What orders, then?” he asks the Captain, and the Pilot-Major, waiting to see what the plans were for sailing as they had only a short while until sunset.

"We anchored here in the bay just before we were whisked through the portal. Let us sleep and rest and then tackle land in the morning."

Flynn wrote:

"Right," he says after a moment.

"In which case I guess we set the deck watch and rest."

"Aye. Rest well, Flynn. Let's ensure that box and coin are not placed together below deck. Keep them separated yet secure." And with that she caught Amen's glance but the girl went below deck without saying anything. If it was of import, Amen would tell her in the morning.

Rain moved to the Wheel and check the ropes she had placed earlier tying it off. Reassured it was secure, she moved toward Variel and helped set watch for the night. Then she found a quiet position away from the others, and with Neko beside her, sat cross-legged on the deck and began her hourly prayer/meditations for some of her spells before retiring for the night.

Seijiro took his watch first... walking the deck, pacing, seemingly nervously, along the railings, alternating from one side of the ship to the other, frequently looking down at the water as he did so.

When his watch was over he sighed and went to his bunk curling up and staying awake a long while, ruminating on all that had happened. At last, he felt sleep coming upon him and turned his thoughts to Selenia, hoping she would occupy his dreams, turning them pleasant and comforting. When he did finally sleep, it was fitful with disturbing dreams, however.

Emerging from his quarters in the morning, Seijiro looked like he'd not slept much if at all. Dark circles surrounded his eyes, which looked deeper set than usual, and his lips were pursed and dry, testament to the tension that was evident also in the prominent cording in his neck and the set of his posture.

As you look at box, you find the coin fused into the lid, as if it had been embedded there since the box's creation. In addition, it seems as if the box has been locked in place upon the ship. It is impossible to move and you have the suspicion that even if you break the deck around it, it won't move a hair from where it is on the ship. It seems almost as if it is now a part of the ship and you could no more remove it than remove your own heart.

------------------------------------------------

The night passes uneventfully and you wake to find the day dreary and overcast. Heavy, fat drops of rain pour down upon you as you make your way ashore on the longboat, trying as best you can to keep your possessions dry in the incessant rain. Reaching the white sand beach, several of the crew, including Sandara, Shivikah, and Fishguts, who just wanted to stretch his legs and go crabbing a bit to replenish your stores. Sandara and Shivikah stay with him to guard the boat and also to guard Fishguts from anything that might crop up.

The jungle itself looks like a solid wall of green vegetation. Twisted climbing vines, dense, suffocating undergrowth and heavy, wet air make for an unpleasant hiking experience. The jungle hugs the southern circumference of the bay and stops at a small river that comes down from a series of waterfalls, cascading down a sheer cliff. The northern section of the bay contains a mangrove swamp on it's eastern edge, changing to marshy grasslands all the way up to the cliffs.

The only other item of note is you can see the bridge that you saw from the air part of the way up the river. The bridge is sized for creatures much larger than you all, you can see that from here, but it has fallen into severe disrepair.

What are your plans?

Horatio says nothing as he pulls out a smoke and lights it, but he nods at Amen-set.

She turns to Jiro.

"If thy would permit me Jiro-san, I shall send Horus aloft to scout the immediate terrain. Also, given that the stone we seek is likely hidden in some secure location it is likely that such a location would be close to the road. Thus, if we scout for threats and find none, mayhap we could first journey the length of the road and see what we discover on it?"

She glances at Horatio and he shrugs, then looks at the beach and Amen-set's eyes widen as she sees him stare at the folk at the boat.

"Thy pardon, oh my senet," she says and turns to Rain.

"Though thy sailors no doubt wish to idle their day on dry land, perhaps they would do better if the were given more specific orders in thy absence? Should they prepare a bivouac, or perhaps ferry in more folk to guard the boat? I do not wish to speak for thee, yet in this matter I deem thy orders would be best if thy would know their purpose and plans in thy absence."

"Further, with thy Chief Ensign ashore," she says with a nod at Sandara "who remains aboard our vessel in thy absence to direct the crew should a threat arise?" she asks, clearly deferring to Rain personally rather than the formal chain of command.

Horatio still says nothing, but he watches Horus fly up and scout the general area in about a quarter mile radius.

"I do not know; yet I should think they are like any other creature, they would make their path through the way of greatest ease. If a road is without barrier I should think they would prefer it, rather than moving through the morass of swamp or jungle. Yet we shall see, no doubt."

"Are there any other specific orders, then, for the folk who stand on the shore to guard the boat?" she asks him.

She had heard Amen's question or statement, but before she had the chance to speak the girl deferred to Variel. She had heard her betrothed's answer but she gave her own as well, "Sandara, Shivikah and Fishguts will not be idle for they will be catching crabs and fish for our stores. They will work together for safety which is admirable as we know the strangeness of this isle we have inherited." She looked back at the other members of the crew, "Conchobar!" she called up to the rigger, "You have charge of the ship in our absence or until Sandara's return. If sign of threat, signal us, via bell or shot, and let no one take the ship. The Wheel is tied off. Keep your eyes on the water, horizon and overhead."

Looking to Amen, she added, "And as Variel stated, little sister, the others know their duties and do no require my direction. Each officer has seen to those they have charge of, and, I am certain Flynn has advised his gunners and alike to be on the ready."

Amen-set looks at Horatio who remains on the edge of the rise leading to the path. He seems to be crouched down and peering at the water, his eyes gauging the depth and thinking of something, but he says nothing.

She turns to Rain.

"Aye..." she says somewhat slowly, as if unsure if Horatio did in fact do that, or what exactly he did do, but she does not elaborate at this time. Instead, she nods her head at Rain courteously and then looks back at Horus and wonders what he may see.

Horatio turns his gaze from the bridge. He looks at Rain for a brief moment, then Rajah.

Horatio takes another drag on his smoke and looks at Amen-set for a long moment, who is still watching Horus, then he gives her a somewhat cynical smile which she seems to notice but ignore.

"You should recall Horus. If there were any real dangers out there, doubtless we would have been informed by now," he says to her.

Taking 10 on Knowledge: Engineering: 27.

He then turns to the others.

"The bridge is old, but to my mind it's solid enough - at least, it appears so. In any case, I'm going to cross it," he says, then strides forward to the bridge and begins to cross it.

Horatio crosses the bridge unless anything happens. If there are any details about the safety of the bridge I'll deal with them when we learn more.

Horus takes off and vanishes into the sun, riding the thermals coming off of the cliff to gain height and see around. She doesn't send any calls alerting to danger but the jungle is dense and thick and the marshy area is fairly foggy so it's difficult for her to see much in those areas.

Rain leads you slowly through the jungle without incident beyond getting stung, bit, and drained of blood by what feels like every insect on the planet until coming upon an overgrown road made of large slabs of dark grey stone that leads to a large stone bridge. The bridge looks to be in disrepair and there are a few spots where the stone has fallen away, leaving large gaps. The road is 50 feet wide and 200 long across the river flowing sluggishly beneath it.

K. Engineering check: There are large sections that are not structurally sound and could give way at any moment, you suspect there is a way across and that it will hold all of your weight but you put the chances that something will go wrong with the structure while you are on it at about 25-50%

As Horus alights on Amen-set's arm she quickly communicates to the others what she has found. Horatio glances at the marshy area and frowns at the bugs, but is not overly vexed by them.

The smoke from the cheroot is not a coincidence; it hangs thick in the air as he walks the smoke acts as a slight buffer from the flying bloodsuckers.

"When we finish claiming this island we'll drain the swamp," he says then continues to move forward he says, wondering if the mosquitoes are the Anopheles variety.

When they get to the bridge Horatio prepares to advance, then studies it thoughtfully.

"There are large sections that are not structurally sound and could give way at any moment. I figure there's a way across and that it will hold all our weight but the chances that something will go wrong with the structure while we're on it at are about one in four, maybe one in two..." he adds.

He glances at Amen-set and raises an eyebrow at her.

She nods and takes a rope out of her pack and links it to her waist and then tosses the length of it to him. He then turns and ties it around his own waist and he turns to the person behind him and offers it to them.

"Amen-set will stay slightly above the bridge; she can fly a bit, I'll do what I can to guide her from what I see on the bridge about any damage. If the bridge cracks or breaks, she'll be ahead of it and able to help me from falling - if whoever is behind me can also help out, just in case?" he says, looking at the others behind him and curious to know who might be able to help with the rope.

"This would depend on my senet, no doubt, yet I am still curious to know the safety of this passage should we return to it later," Amen-set responds, assuming Variel is speaking to her, rather than Rain, for some reason.

"Indeed, if we are hard pressed by an enemy and are forced to flee, I would not have it crumble beneath us should we move with haste over it; further, once we are placed on the far side, whoever is placed there first will have little aid should trouble appear while my senet must ferry the rest of across us one at each time... unless she can carry more than one?" she adds, then glances at Rain thoughtfully.

"In any case, I, too, will move forward with whoever she is willing to aid first and remain near to them to offer support even as she returns to fetch the others. The bridge does not trouble me overmuch, for I, too, am able to fly after a fashion..." she adds.

If Rain has to carry each of us one at a time, Amen-set will go with the first person and wait with them for protection from any threats until Rain is able to get the rest of the people across, just in case.

"If she is willing to carry us, who shall go with her first? And remember, too, though we may place our doughtiest warrior on the far side to stand alone against a threat, in time there shall only be one warrior on this side to wait for my senet to retrieve... yet enemies may come from either side of the bridge if we are divided," she adds.

What is the order of the people moving across? Amen-set will go with whoever wishes to go. I'll send Horatio first with Rain, unless anyone else wants to go first?

Horatio eyes the entire conversation silently, but when the order is finally decided he flicks the ash of his cheroot.

"Good; so basically you, Rain, and Amen-set go - she'll hang back with you on the other side to offer cover. Then Rain can come get the rest of us in whatever order needs to get done. Then she'll bring you back when there's only two left, leave you here with the second to last, swap out you for one of the two left - meanwhile, Amen-set will come back to offer you some cover in a pinch as you'll eventually be on the last to get moved and she can offer you some back-up, if you need it - then Rain comes back, picks you up and you're on the other side, no problem."

He then takes another long drag from his smoke and as its clenched between his teeth he mutters "I love it when a plan comes together..."

GM - you have our plan; given Rain has muleback cords I'm assuming she won't even need be troubled to even make a Fly Check to move us across given the power of the cords? In which case, if anything shady happens, please let us know what side of the bridge it goes down and who's where via the action - if nothing happens, then I guess we made it across and are good to go to the next part of the mission :)

With Rain's aid, you all manage to make your way across. It takes a little time but not much and then you are on your way. The road makes several turns before running up to the sheer cliffs. You see the ruins of what was once a switchback but it appears that a rockslide has taken the majority of it out. You stand before a 500 foot wall of solid stone, what now?

Horatio peers up at the cliff wall.

Looking at the overhead map you have for our link; I can't figure out for the life of me where we are (especially as I thought we were going to walk the length of the road starting at the north eastern bay and try to find structures on it); and I'm not even sure what bridge we crossed (I assume it's the bridge located where I moved the Horatio icon and the cliffs are were I moved the Amen-set icon, as we started on the cove on the right and have moved west - of course; there is another bridge to the south east of where our ship was, so I may be confused; but I can't figure out any place where there would be a cliff on the road at all; hence my confusion - any chance of getting the overhead map updated with our current location via these cliffs? Thank you :)

Glancing around, he studies the terrain and then walks back a bit, roughly fifty to sixty feet back to peer up at the cliffs.

He glances at Amen-set thoughtfully, his eyes flicking to Horus and he thinks for a moment about sending them aloft to scout.

Then he disregards this and turns to Rain and Dhaavan.

"Either of you two want to try scouting this? We could send Jack; or, if you prefer, Pilot-Major, you could go, too? Either way; I'd like to know why the road won't let us go up the cliffs as this makes no sense whatsoever..." he adds with a flat voice.

Variel stares up at the cliff in front of them. I suppose Rain, do you think you could fly us up again or should we try to find a way around. We would have to leave the pat to create our own switchback to traverse up the mountain to do so however.

Right; and as I'm understanding it, a switchback starts at one side of hill/mountain and goes diagonally gradually up and across the hill to leave a more gradual ascent rather than steep, right? So if the stones fell from the top and blocked the "opening" or the beginning of the trail of the switchback then unless the stones completely covered the entire path from top to bottom then wouldn't that mean if we just traveled - for example - 50 feet parallel with the path of the switchback we could end up climbing up a small part of the hill and avoid the blockage that is covering the road at the base of the switchback? I mean; unless the entire path is completely blocked, and it may be - but at this point I'm just trying to get a feel for what we're looking at is all.

Horatio watches the raven ascend and waits to see what will happen next.

He turns a glance at Variel.

"That sounds like a good plan; but shouldn't we wait to get the raven's report before making our next move? I mean, whatever caused the blockage may be at the summit. It could be dangerous for Rain to fly up alone. Anyway, it's just a suggestion..."

Island of Empty Eyes Map Current Map

Picture of what it kind of looks like. The cliffs are a little more sheer than in the picture though. Also you went over the bridge to the southeast and I moved your avtars to the right spot. The switchback trail looked like this but a rockslide made it a pretty sheer cliff.

Dhaavan's Eyes Only:
The "raven" comes back down and reports that the cliff is going to need to be climbed as the winds coming off the cliff are very strong near the top. A flier with a less than perfect flying ability will have difficulty navigating. It does not spy any enemies however.

Horatio studies the cliff for a long time.

"Well, I'm still not sure why we can't just walk a little past where the rock slide is blocking the trail and then, climb up around the rock slide and get back on the trail above it - after all, the rock slide itself couldn't have obliterated the entire trail all the way to the top. Of course, I may be wrong; after all, the entire ancient road which stretches all the way to the summit may be obliterated completely, though, to be fair, I'm still a little uncertain on details as I haven't heard what the scout has reported," he says then looks at Dhaavan for the details.

While he waits, he offer another idea.

"On the other hand, if climbing over rocks is going to be a real issue then I suppose we could pull out that magical, portable chamber that we could crawl into and sleep in; then we could all crawl in it, then - while we're all inside - if the Pilot-Major is willing, of course - she could just carry the sack that holds the chamber and whisk us all to the top of the cliff while we're inside the sack - simple as pie," he says with a shrug and a glance at Rain.

Amen-set merely lets out an audible sigh and rolls her eyes at that suggestion.

"Huh! Being carried about in a sack like naught but viands ... bah," she mutters, but says no more on the subject.

The rockslide seems to have shorn off most all of the trail He says pointing back and forth where the switchback would have been had rocks not all sheared away, And while there don't seem to be enemies up there, there's some high winds at the top and anything less than the perfect flight of elemental and the like will have problems flying up there... Dhaavan notes [b]being tied together may be safer. I have a way up, myself with magic, and we can help each other like we used to on the wormwood

Horatio glances at Dhaavan.

"I'm not too sure about climbing up there until we know what caused the landslide; after all, we have seen some big creatures on this island - who knows what's lurking up there? But I'll do it if it's our only option, though."

"But if what you're saying is right and you can get to the top with magic, then why shouldn't we simply try the trick with the magical bag and the extra-dimensional space while you just ferry us to the top?"

"Or, if that's no good we could use a rope to rig a sling and just have the good Pilot-Major - if she's willing - lift those up one at a time the to summit.

"Don't get me wrong, it does seem a bit... unconventional - but if a person is sitting in a sling held in the ropes they should be able to cast spells and use most range weapons even while being lifted."

"Plus, we know she can do it - remember; the Pilot-Major has Muleback Cords. I have a hunch that lifting a person even in high winds should be a breeze," he adds with a grin.

Amen-set looks at Horatio, then Rain, then the others.

"Senet, will you carry the others up?" she asks.

She then glances at Horatio again.

"For now, I shall explore, though not all the way to the summit..."

Amen-set then flies up about 75 feet off the ground to see if there's any way around the rock slide at that elevation. She also carries a rope.

When she gets up the 75 feet she'll attempt to find a place to remain braced on the rocks (if there is no other way around it) then lower the rope so that the others can climb it, depending on what she sees.

Rain looked up at the summit and then back to the group, addressing not only the speakers but the rest,

Seeing Amen take immediately to the air and then try to hover in the skies above but falter a little under the forces of the strong winds, Rain asked Neko to send a telepathic message to the girl,

//Too dangerous and you're faltering, little sister. Come down or find a ledge if you can to wait for us. The others have said to climb and we shall climb up.//

Fly Check to help Amen only if she's faltering and it looks like she'll get hurt - 40ft flight speed: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17

Rain removed the silk rope from her pack and placed it over her shoulder. She began to cast and laid her hand against her opposite arm. (Monkey Fish on herself, giving her 10 ft climb speed and swim speed for 4 mins.)

Looking to Neko, she instructed, "When we're almost up to the top, teleport to the top, please. Be mindful, Neko."

Then standing beside the other two, Rain began to climb up one of the safest routes.
