Will update what you find down the stairs in a while as I don't have the book in front of me.

Horatio and Amen-set have now reached the bottom of the stairs without incident. They both peer around in the semi-darkness, curious to see what mysteries and exciting adventures are down here...

Horatio's hand tightens on the butt of his pistol and he glances aft toward Amen-set.

"Be careful... the stairs weren't trapped, but that doesn't mean that there aren't any threats down here," he says with a tense voice, then turns to examine the challenges ahead...

I'll toss up another Perception Check in case there are some hidden creatures down here...

Seijiro waits with Ana and Variel and Rain while Horation and Amen-Set explore alone... He does wonder though Why are we sticking together in this... it seems to me our combined skills would work better together, especially if another threat is found.

I'm going to handwave that you are all together at this point just to move things along. At the very least, Flynn is heading down the stairs and you all are in the same room.

Flynn, as you make your way downstairs it seems that this basement was dug out to serve as a sort of jail. Dust and spiderwebs cross the bars of the three cells you see in the room. A rusty ring of keys sits upon a nail on the wall.

Horatio stares at the dusty, dirty, empty room.

He turns and notices the others behind him and then stuff his pistol into his holster.

Realizing that not all of the company has the ability to see in the dark, he raises his hand and mutters a few words and casts Light on the nearest set of iron bars.

He looks at Variel.

"Alright," he says with a flat and irritated voice.

"I'm going to go back to the ship and get the men. I'm going to bring them back here and I'm going to have them bring supplies and we're going to start to work on fixing this place up," he says.

"We've been talking, and shooting, and casting spells; in other words, we've made enough noise to draw out any danger and bring it to us. But, in all that time - other than the few dream things we bumped into upstairs, which ran away from us - there has been nothing here."

"No traps, no threats, no action - so I'm thinking whatever adventures might have been in this place are long gone and all we've been doing is wandering around doing nothing."

"So it looks like we've finished searching this place; we've taken care of whatever threats are here and there's nothing left to do but bring in the lads and start work on fixing this place up."

He looks at Variel.

"If there's something else you've got in mind instead, let me know. Otherwise I'm getting the lads."

Thqt does seem true Horatio that this place seems deserted now but we have only been here a short time. There could be creatures living here that are hunting in the jungle, asleep in a different area, or are able to fly and are out over the water. I understand your eagerness to set down roots and start fixing this place up for our own use. I just don't want to risk the crew needlessly if we can explore more in depth. Also I am concerned about those dreams coming back. We barely managed to drive them off. The crew would have jo chance.

Variel stops talking as he moves closer to Flynn. Do you feel that air current? Not natural if you ask me.

Horatio pauses and scratches his beard absently.

"I don't know... It's like - if there was anything going on here that could be a threat then maybe we'd have seen it by now, you know? Instead, it's like nothing but a lot of... I don't know... nothing?" he says, then shrugs again.

"Still, if you're up for doing more searching, I guess I won't protest. But between you and me I'm thinking we may find a few more traps in some of the rooms, but any threats in this place have probably skipped out. Once we make sure things are clear and bring in the lads then we can do what you said earlier about pushing north to where those ruins you saw earlier were."

He glances around the room skeptically.

Variel, you catch the air shift slightly again and pinpoint the section of wall. Horatio, your engineering shows that this section of wall seems to be somewhat less solid but you see the telltale signs of support beams sunk into the stone, very faint but there. Dhaavan, when you use your magical sight, you see a pale blue outline of a doorway, radiating abjuration and evocation.

Seijiro moves to the points shown by Horatio and Dhaavan and begins to study the area. Looking for a moment he begins to trace a series of innocuous cracks in the wall, finally pressing four spots simultaneously. A small burst of blue light comes out and a stone doorway appears. Pressing one side it swivels on a central axis and opens into a dark and dusty passageway.

Indeed Jiro! you put those skills to good use I must say. The question now is why go to the trouble in placing such a hidden area and then trapping it? I would have thought that 1 or the other would have been enough.

Perhaps Jiro you should continue in the lead in case there are other traps ahead of us? I will be right behind you though should you need any support.

You make your way down the corridor, moving slowly as you go, looking all around for traps and the like. The air seems very stale and musty, covered in ancient cobwebs. Suddenly the corridor comes to a dead end at another blank stone wall about 40' away down a straight section of hallway. Looking above you, you see hundreds of chains hanging down with smooth metal handles attached to the end like you would see hanging outside a well to do inn for ringing the bell after hours.

No secret doors that you can see but you know that at least some of the chains are trapped. If you pull the wrong ones, something bad will happen. You spot a couple that look like they will lock around the hands of the person that pulls them and yank them into the ceiling. You're sure there are others that do similar nasty things but they are hard to spot.

The chains are about 2 feet above your heads. They look to be the perfect height to pull.

There are seven chains left, each of them has one of these symbols on it.

Horatio peers the symbols and studies them for a moment.

This reminds me of an old puzzle box I heard of once... solving it was not a good thing...

He looks at Jiro for a moment.

"Are you sure solving it is a good idea?" he asks the kitsune, not entirely sure either way.

Despite his concerns, Horatio will still take a swing at it -

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32

Boo for the Natural 2 - Yay for the Natural 20 - and I'm undecided on the Natural 9 - here's hoping that I can get some "Aid Checks with this - or my checks will aid someone else, perhaps?

Amen-set bends down and studies the symbols for a moment.

like the 7 sins of the runelords, that kind of thing? and if that's the case, I'd hazard:

first symbol is lust, because it looks like a male figure in full erection

second symbol no clue

third symbol might be sloth, it's reclining

fourth symbol looks like a hand holding a gem - greed?

fifth symbol no clue

sixth symbol looks like a proud person - so pride?

seventh symbol, no clue

that leaves only envy, gluttony and wrath... in which case, I'd hazard the seventh is wrath - it looks like 2 figures in conflict... envy and gluttony, would be 2 and 5, but I wouldn't even want to make a guess as to which is which... but if Seijiro was going to climb one of them, he'd pick lust, because his thoughts are always focused on Selenia/Udara, lol... if the idea is to climb one of the ones that was trapped but now disarmed and avoid touching any of the rune endowed charms, that would be different, of course.

I guess the seven symbols could be seven sins... But maybe not... Dhaavan says, looking at the symbols. even so, what do we do with them?

if 1 is lust then I'd say 5 is gluttony as it looks like an obese persons chest of its not breasts... And 2 doesn't call to mind gluttony but rather squinted eyes to me. And I agree on 6 and 7. 6 looks like a septre, and 7 a horned helm.
...
Imm is there any check we can do about these? Iunno much of anything about runelords except some stuff about alternate wizard schools

You're on the right track Dhaavan. Also, I'll allow outside sources on this just because it's something I added to the game. So you can search for help online to get the different symbols. Also remember my hint as to which one you need to pull.

sorry, I'm clueless as to what the hint is referring to... playing devil's advocate, you'd argue against the prevailing opinion... right? but all we've got so far is that Seijiro would go for 'lust'... other than that I haven't got an inkling... anyone else want to chime in on this?

Trying to figure this out as well. The only thing I can come up with is devil's advocate was the name of a movie as well dealing with a lawyer but that is not striking any inspiration right now. Pride and greed would fit for the lawyer, lust for the case he is working on.

Yes! Variel you are so close! There is a scene where Al Pacino says what his favorite sin is!

that would have been vanity - yes?

I am going to have to watch that now to figure it out. I will let you all know once I finish watching it.

It is vanity. Or in this case... pride. Seijiro for the win all the way around. Impressive, dude. :)

YAY!!! GOOD JOB GUYS!!!

Seijiro moves forward carefully and pulls the chain with the Pride symbol etched into the handle. A low chime rings and a section of wall slides open revealing what looks to be some sort of vault or treasure room. A variety of small chests, crates, and sacks fill this small chamber. A large number of different items are present.

a suit of +1 glamered elven chain,
a bag of holding (type II),
gloves of swimming and climbing,
a helm of comprehend languages and read magic,
an oil of magic weapon,
a potion of lesser restoration,
a scroll of control water,
a scroll of displacement,
a ruby-studded scepter worth 400 gp,
a silver tea set worth 75 gp,
a gold ring worth 50 gp,
two diamonds worth 500 gp each,
three sapphires worth 250 gp each,
eight fire opals worth 100 gp each,
12 aquamarines worth 50 gp each,
1,754 gp, 2,319 sp, and 6,438 cp.

Seijiro's eyes light up when he sees the treasure and he starts by casting detect magic... though he leaves the identification to those with some actual useful spellcraft skill... then he fondles the gems and scepter with a smile on his face... though he puts them all back for others to look through as well... "Pretty!"
