Variel Nightstorm |
Variel hears Flynn and Rajah discussing Harrigan. Pointing to the xebec in the distance Variel calls out, Hold that fire even if provoked. The Master of Gales is in sight. Focus instead on repairing any damage taken. We are this close to winning honorably. Do nothing to jeopardize our success.

Horatio nods his head at the order, and holsters his pistol, realizing that Variel was correct.
"Aye-aye, Captain-General," he calls out, then moves to work on the repairs.
GM - earlier you indicated the natural 20 I rolled for repair could be used later when we had time. Can that be done now?
Also, are we officially out of the storm, or are we just in the "Eye" of the storm where the vortex is calm before we exit it?
Also, what's the status of the Elemental at this point? Did we lose it, or is it trying to pursue?
Finally, any status on the officer below deck?
DM Immortal |
You do not see the elemental following, it seems to be gone for now in the swirling maelstrom. Spotting a crack in one of the spars from the lightning bolt you swiftly move yourself up and begin to patch it, praying to all the gods you can think of that it holds in this last leg.
Your Natural 20 will make sure the patch holds.
Unless you actually go below deck to check you aren't sure. Everyone is pretty busy with the race right now.
DM Immortal |
Rain's expert piloting begins to become evident as you pull away from the Wormwood. You keep your eyes peeled for any signs of foul play but are surprised to see none. The opposing pilot is amazing but Rain seems to be one with the ship and sea, virtually flying the boat and barely allowing the keel to touch the water such is the speed she is coaxing out of the Dread Lady.
This continues for about a minute or two when suddenly, out of nowhere, Rain begins to convulse violently as she is rocked back and forth, as if she is taking blows from an unseen opponent!
Rain, you were hit 4 times, once was a crit for a total of 63 damage. The blows came from right next to you and directly above you.
You all can go, currently you cannot see what caused Rain's injuries.
Rain, I need you to make a fortitude save to be able to continue holding on to the wheel and piloting the ship. Save DC is 25 however since you reminded me that you are tied to the wheel you get a +2 bonus to the save on top of your regular bonuses, failure and you lose the wind until you are able to make another DC 30 profession sailor check to catch the wind as a full round action.
Rain Taneththir |
Surprise Round
Swift action: Bear Focus, lasts 4 min/day. Adds +4 to Constitution score. Fort save now +13. Also, gains 16 hp from increased constitution. So her hp are currently 24/87 HP.
Fort save (DC 25) with bonus for being tied plus Adular's Prayer bonus: 1d20 + 13 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 13 + 2 + 1 = 30
She screamed upon the initial and sudden onslaught.
Then with pure fortitudinal tenacity, even as searing pain coursed through her body with the deep gashes she just sustained, Rain swiftly kicked in her bear animal focus and gripped the Wheel in order to continue steering the ship and not lose the favourable wind or their lead. Her efforts proved successful and she leaned in on the Wheel, hoping her companions would rally to protect her from any further attacks as she sailed the ship forward.
"There's more than one attacking me! Shield me!" she hissed in pain to those who could hear her, although she could not say how many exactly as she could not see her attackers. (I'm going with Rain knows it's more than one since she was attacked multiple times in succession, but does not know exactly how many assailants as they're invisible. ;p)
Not sure, if this is still required as she made her save, but tossing it up just in case.
Prof. Sailor to keep ship moving forward: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (10) + 23 = 33
Not sure if she can do anything more at this time as we're still in the surprise round...?
Dhaavan |
Dhaavan snaps to and drops a Glitterdust at T3/U4.
How far up is the fighting top? I'm debating having my dogs jump off of the top and see if they make it, but i'm not sure how far it is
Rain Taneththir |
Dhaav, won't the glitterdust reach/blind Rain, as well, due to the 10ft radius spread? o_O That won't help with her steering the ship. :(
Variel Nightstorm |
Based on the results of the glitter dust Variel will either cast haste and attack or cast displacement on Rain and try to attack. Will check back later.
DM Immortal |
Nice save Rain! You definitely succeeded and even managed to move a little further ahead of the Wormwood! You definitely know it's more than one so that's fine. Dhaavan, how long does that summon last? It's been about two minutes since leaving the Eye.
As Dhaavan conjures a glittering cloud of reddish particles that sparkle in the sun, you see it outline an invisible humanoid shaped creature right next to Rain.
Save vs Blindness: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Well it definitely didn't save there lol.
You all see the outlined form grab itself around it's face and it's screams obscenities in the language of air creatures, Auran.
Co-DM's Tricorne |
Thanks, Dhaav and Immortal. :)
-------------------------
How far up is the fighting top?
I believe it's 20ft up. Flynn or Immortal can correct me, if I'm mistaken.
-------------------------
Botting Adular in Surprise Round
Hearing Rain's screams and watching her body flail and then Dhaavan reveal one of her attackers with glitterdust, Adular moved 5ft up and lifting his holy symbol, besought the Pirate Queen for divine assistance, attempting to heal Rain and not the enemy beside her. (Hoping that catches Rain in the 30ft radius burst.) He could not stand by and allow the pilot to fall, especially at this crucial point.
Channel Energy with Selective Channelling: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 4) = 14
Returning 14hp to Rain. Rain's HP now 38/87.
Variel Nightstorm |
With the aid of Dhaavan's casting, the invisible creature was revealed to Variel. Anger surged through him at the sight of it attacking Rain. Calling forth his magics Variel casts haste on himself, Rain, Adular and Dhaavan. stepping up 5 ft he then attacks the creature with deadly precision imbuing his cutlass to become deadlier.
spell combat

haste attack 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20 for 1d8 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19
Hold on dear! Adular, Rain needs more than that!
Seijiro |
Seijiro scowls, wonders for a moment if he should stay up on the mast as lookout, then figures Rain's safety is more important. He swings down (charge with swinging reposition) and attacks the now-exposed assailant with Brine's Sting.
to hit: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 12 + 2 = 27

then as a swift action, he'll take his surprise strike as well, against the creature's flat footed ac... this attack bypasses any dr:

to confirm crit: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 12 + 1 = 29
extra dmg if confirms: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
On a successful hit that deals damage, the target must succeed at a DC 14 Fortitude save or take a –1 penalty on attack and damage rolls for 1 round as salty brine drips painfully onto the wound. A new saving throw must be made each time the weapon deals damage. On a successful critical hit against a creature with the aquatic or water subtype, the target takes an additional 3d6 points of damage as its flesh cracks and withers from dehydration as salt crystals form around the wound.)
Amen-set Neitaker |
Amen-set's eyes narrow as she Rain get attacked.
Raising her hand, a bolt of energy slams forward from her to hit Rain...
Mysterious Bolt of Energy
3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1) = 10
Rain, you get back 10 HP for what it's worth - Amen-set will do more next round, right now she can only take certain actions as it's a Surprise Round - but don't worry; she's coming...
Rain Taneththir |
Her concentration fixed as it was to steering the ship and not on the looming elemental above her head and any other invisible assailant waiting nearby, Rain bit down the pain each movement of the Wheel brought on as her various wounds opened and spilled more blood.
She suddenly felt a wave of warm energy wash over her and she drew a short, relieved breath, but the wounds were many and she was left with the pain of them. She then felt a second bolt of energy hit and wash over her and a few more of her wounds sealed. Still, the elementals had done much damage and she was far from hale, although not as close to death as she had been.
Rain kept her animal focus in place for it provided aid to her wounded body. She turned her head for a moment, first in the direction of Adular and then Amen-set and responded with a sober "Thank you," for she was trying to conserve her energy and strength and not show the pain in her face or voice. After the regatta was done, there would be time for a proper show of gratitude.
She called out again, "There's more than one. Try to expose it/them - the other attack came from the front, to the right of me."
Thanks, Amen! And thanks for helping, Variel and Jiro!
Rain's current hp: 48/87.
Dhaavan: On Immortal's map, it says the hell hounds are on the fighting top 30ft up and in prior/older postings Flynn's posted 20ft up. I'll let Immortal clarify.
"The Blue Rajah" |
Rajah's attention snaps toward Rain as she yells for assistance. Expose them? Oh my, we have unseen attackers. This will not do, not do at all. Saying a quick prayer to the Dawnflower, he moves toward Rain and the others, hoping his magic will reveal the enemy.
Inspired Spell: Invisibility Purge(50' radius); Mythic power 3/5 used; Move to L 4? I can't really tell if I can move to L 4 or to K 4 so I haven't moved Rajah on the map.
Horatio Flynn |
I can't really tell if I can move to L 4 or to K 4 so I haven't moved Rajah on the map.
Plus, I broke the map :)
Horatio Flynn |
Cool - since the map is updated and I'm already 80 feet away, Horatio will use his partial action this round via a Move Action and move to 6:L this round. Next round he will be in a better position to attack. Also, I'm not sure if Jiro killed the one on Rain or not. If he killed the one on Rain, that means Horatio won't have a target next round as (I think) the second enemy is still invisible. But we'll cross that bridge next round :)
DM Immortal |
Variel, your attack definitely hits but does not confirm (it wouldn't take crit damage anyway). The second attack misses however.
Seijiro, you swing down and hit but you can't seem to find the right points to cause the additional damage you usually are able to.
Immune to critical hits and precision damage like sneak attacks
Rajah, the spell goes off but it does not seem to have the desired effect of making the creature, or creatures as Rain has said, visible.
These creatures are immune to invisibility purge specifically but that was a great try!
---------------------------------------
The creatures continue to pound on Rain, trying to dislodge her from the wheel. The first one strikes out blindly at Rain.
Miss chance for both attacks (low hits per my usual): 2d100 ⇒ (61, 76) = 137
Both attacks miss check for fumbles: 2d20 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 [ooc]...HAHA Holy shit!! lol Fumble card is...Fist meet face... attack hits self and is a critical threat. confirm: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19 not a crit. Damage to self 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 = 16
The other one attacks Rain again as well. 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 152d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 2) + 6 = 111d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 172d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9 That one critically fumbling as well!! lol Weird...Sneeze, you are dazed for 1 round.
You guys are up again. I suspect you will probably be able to kill them shortly if your attacks keep landing.
Horatio Flynn |
Horatio dashes up to Q:6 and raises his revolver and takes a shot at the enemy at 5:U.
Attack at Enemy with Luck, Rage, Cat's Grace, Deadly Aim and Point Blank Shot
1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 7 - 2 = 26
If it hits -
1d8 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 1 + 2 + 6 = 18
Plus Fire damage -
1d6 ⇒ 2
EDIT: That hits a Touch AC of 26 and does a total of 18, plus 2 Fire Damage
Variel Nightstorm |
Variel continues to apply the pressure on the reveal assailant as he directs both of his attacks in that direction. Hoping to give Rain some extra staying power until more help arrives Variel then casts a spell bolstering her stamina.

Seijiro |
Seijiro strikes again at the visible (ie glittery) enemy attacking Rain, flanking it with Variel if possible...
acrobatics to get into flank without an aoo: 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (7) + 26 = 33
to hit: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 12 + 2 = 28
dmg if hits: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
to hit: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 2 = 22
dmg if hits: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
if it can't be flanked, take off the additional +2 to hit
Rain Taneththir |
Variel, I don't think enhancement bonuses stack? Rain already has her Bear Animal Focus in place which gives her a +4 enhancement bonus to CON.
The elementals were determined to finish her off but fortune (and magic) was on her side and they missed in their efforts to tear her flesh anew. Another wave of energy hit and washed over her and a few of the smaller, gaping wounds knitted together cleanly. "Thank you, she called out once more to the caster who healed her. It must be Amen.
Current HP: 57/87.
Tied as she was, she could not move away from the elementals around her, so she continued to steer, pushing the Lady forward even as the battle played out around her. "Besmara, Gozreh, aid us now," she whispered a prayer unto the wind.
Prof. Sailor: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (13) + 23 = 36
Calling out to her companions, "Work together and finish them off. There is still one invisible creature to my right."
Move action: Activated Freebooter's Bond: All allies within 30 feet who can see or hear the freebooter gain an additional +2 bonus on attack rolls when flanking with the freebooter or with another ally affected by this ability.
Co-DM's Tricorne |
Botting Adular
Adular took a five foot step and lifted his holy symbol high into the air and a wave of healing energy moved in a 30ft radius burst from him, healing any of his companions, especially Rain, and selectively choosing to not include the attacking creatures.
Channel Energy with Selective Channelling: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1, 5) = 13
Channel Energy used twice. 3 more uses available this day. Blue Rajah, not sure if you've lost any hps previously, but the channel hit you as well, if you need some healing (wasn't sure if Amen healed you right up earlier). :)
Rain's current hp: 70/87.
"The Blue Rajah" |
Rajah will strap on his shield and head towards Rain. As he does that, he pulls out his weapon as well.
Strap on shield(move); Move to Q 4(move); Draw weapon(free with move)
Dhaavan |
Are both creatures visible at this point?
If not, Dhaavan will call out to rain, Whetes the other one? and drop another glitterdust to hit only it.
If they are, he will summon more hounds to surround the creatures and set flanks. you can dismiss the first set
Horatio Flynn |
Whetes the other one?
Horatio turns his gaze from the enemy he shot to look at Dhaavan.
"A good question, Ser Dhaavan," he says with a tight voice as his eyes grind into the quarterdeck, searching for the remaining threat.
"If you can amend this problem, I'd be obliged - it seems that no one else in the company has the ability to do so," he adds.
Drop another glitterdust to hit only it...
Horatio's eyes gleam with pleasure.
"Well done, My lord," he responds with relish as he sees the last one come into view.
Rain Taneththir |
Are both creatures visible at this point?
Only one is visible - the one you hit with glitterdust last round.
Dhaavan will call out to Rain, Where's the other one? and drop another glitterdust to hit only it.
Rain heard the sorcerer's question on the wind and replied, "I cannot see it, but it strikes from in front of me to the right."
DM Immortal |
Your combined attacks drops the visible opponent, which seems to dissipate into nothingness.
Dhaavan, Rain isn't sure but the other one is coming from above her which will be difficult to place without hitting one of your allies. Give me a spellcraft check to see if you can place it without hitting one of them.
Horatio Flynn |
Your combined attacks drops the visible opponent, which seems to dissipate into nothingness.
GM - Who was the one that killed it? If Variel dropped it, then Jiro should be able to just transfer his current attack to the second threat. If I killed it, then Variel and Jiro can move on the next one.
Anyway, my action's over for now. If it's okay, please let me know who did the killing so we know how many attacks transfer the next creature. Thanks! :)
DM Immortal |
The combined total of all your attacks was enough to drop it so whoever struck last dropped it.
You're good Dhaavan, no need for the surge with that roll.
Slightly above and to the right of Rain, another of those same creatures appears covered in motes of glittering light.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 and it is now blinded as well since the die roller hates me today lol.
Horatio Flynn |
The combined total of all your attacks was enough to drop it so whoever struck last dropped it.
Wow! So that means (assuming we discount Jiro's precision attacks as you mentioned earlier) that after adding everything up that these things have 120 HP... Well, I guess it's good news that we all attacked the same one, then!
I guess we all get to go again, as this last one is now blind, dazed and confused :)
"The Blue Rajah" |
Rajah casts more magic upon himself before moving to attack the elemental.
Using Fervor to cast Bull's Strength.
Moved to S 5
+1 Adamantine Scimitar: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
AC 24; Hp's 70/70; Fervor(1/9 used)
DM Immortal |
Due the the blindness Rajah that hits!
Everyone else's turn now!
Seijiro |
Can Seijiro even hit it if it is above Rain?
Horatio Flynn |
Horatio’s eyes narrow as he watches the scene before him.
Lifting his pistol he takes a Full Attack Action (Kicking in Rage, Luck, PBS and Deadly Aim, as well as magical and so on…).
Attack 1
1d20 + 5 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 5 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 2 = 24
If it hits –
1d8 + 1 + 1 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 1 + 6 + 2 = 17
Plus 1d6 Fire Damage
1d6 ⇒ 4
Attack 2
1d20 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 2 = 23
If it hits –
1d8 + 1 + 1 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 1 + 6 + 2 = 11
Plus 1d6 Fire Damage
1d6 ⇒ 6
He does not turn his eyes from the creature, but barks a command to Amen-set.
”Finish it off, please,” he says to her with a brittle voice.
Not sure what that did; but if everything hit - that's a total of 38 damage.
Amen-set Neitaker |
”Finish it off, please,” he says to her with a brittle voice.
”With very great pleasure, oh my Hatey-a',” she responds as her eyes glance to Rain.
Then she moves forward slowly and deliberately, as if she is ignoring everything before her but the enemy...
Moving to R:7.
Amen-set raises her hand and a cone of flame explodes from her fingers...
Burning Hands on the enemy
5d4 + 1 ⇒ (4, 4, 3, 1, 3) + 1 = 16
EDIT: Assuming that also hits, that's a total of 54 damage at this point. If we count Rajah's damage that taps us up to 68 damage.
Seijiro |
Seijiro strikes at the glittering form... "Keep sailing, Rain, you're doing great.. we'll deal with this nasty thing."
to hit: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15
dmg if hits: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8 precision if it applies: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 3) = 8
to hit: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
dmg if hits: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 precision if it applies: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 1) = 9
But sadly, he seems too distracted by all the attacks going off around him to strike very accurately.
Seijiro |
I forgot Seijiro was singing to inspire, so +1 to to hit and damage on those rolls, not that it will probably make much difference, but it might to the others...
Variel Nightstorm |
With only one creature lef to focus his anger on Variel uses his extra length to strike with power hoping to rid Rain of the assailant. Rain I can give you some protection but it will hinder any healing as well?
Power attack 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21 for 1d8 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22
Haste attack 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30 for 1d8 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21
Cast displacement on Rain if she accepts it.
Amen-set Neitaker |
With only one creature lef to focus his anger on Variel uses his extra length to strike with power hoping to rid Rain of the assailant. Rain I can give you some protection but it will hinder any healing as well?
Amen-set notices Variel move to attack and she turns her gaze to glance to Horatio.
She sees his expression, and turns back to the enemy to watch it.
While looking at the enemy, she speaks to Rain -
"Fear not, oh my senet. If thy would need assistance, I shall attend to thee with ease."
RE: Dhaavan's summoned Hellhouds -
1d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Rain Taneththir |
Rain I can give you some protection but it will hinder any healing as well?
"If it confuses the creatures bidden to attack me, then it is for the better", she said as she continued to steer the Lady forward.
Prof Sailor: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (20) + 23 = 43
Active Effects: has Haste placed on her by Variel. HP 62/79.
Amen-set Neitaker |
Profession: Sailor - 43 Via Natural 20
Amen-set watches the display of combat with flat eyes. She looks back to Horatio and stares at him and it seems some unspoken conversation translates through their gaze.
She says nothing to him, but nods her head and he shrugs and reloads his pistols.
She turns a bright smile to Rajah -
"Thy drew first blood on the enemy; for that, and the sake of my senet, I thank thee," she says as Horatio pauses and glances up at her, then shakes head silently and goes back to reloading his pistols.
Amen-set stands at the foot of the quarterdeck, knowing that whoever is piloting the ship is the only person that has the right to give permission to ascend.
"With respect, Pilot-Major," she says with a courteous voice "if thy would allow me, I should like to examine thy wounds..." she adds and waits for Rain's answer as she knows the Elf is currently busy steering the ship.
Co-DM's Tricorne |
Since Variel is placing a Displacement spell on Rain (on his turn before Amen set's action to examine Rain), it would mean Rain appears to be 2 feet from her current location by the Wheel.. I think if Amen tried to examine her, she'd find it difficult with the spell in play, yes?
With Variel's focused anger and powerful strokes of blade, he manages to hit the blinded elemental twice, and, wounding it greatly, it dissipates into nothingness just like the previous elemental.
Rain continued pushing the Lady forward as if the ship was flying through the water, so was the Elven pilot's determination to make the finish line before the Wormwood or any other vessel.
End of current combat. Please advise what you will be doing now. Also, an exciting point to note: As soon as the regatta is over, we'll be done with Book 3!
