They rowed back to the ship and climbed aboard. Rain followed Variel back to the cabin and then opened the crude map given to them for the race and added it to the other charts before them. Drawing Svingli's Eye from her pack, she worked at establishing the best path/position so as to not be too heavily impacted by the storms so near the Eye.

Rain, you know from living on Tempest Cay that the storm knows no master and is unpredictable. Once in the Eye all bets are off and it will only be your skill and the skill of your crew that keeps you alive.

-------------------------------------------------------

Dhaavan, bets are that there will be some that try to cheat but the Master of Gales is not one to be trifled with and you suspect he believes wholeheartedly in the spirit of the race. If caught, the ships guilty will be disqualified on the spot. It is testament to the respect showed to the Master of Gales that you don't hear about any plans to cheat. That said, it is not outside the realm of possibility once the race begins.

-------------------------------------------------------

The race begins first thing in the morning, under leaden skies and sudden squalls of driving rain. You spy a dingy making it's way between the ships and spot your friend, Captain Pierce Jerrel, who bids you all good luck and making you promise to win as he has a sizable wager on you all. He says he would stay but the race is about to start. He blows a kiss to Rain and winks at Variel before instructing his men to continue on.

A massive conch shell blows and all crews make ready and jostle for position at the start. After over an hour of shouting, cursing, and jostling for position, the contenders arrange themselves in rough
formation behind the starting line drawn between the Kraken and another ship, the Ocean’s Revenge. All eyes look to the Master of the Gales, who stands atop a rocky promontory on Cauldron Rock. He raises both arms to the sky and unleashes a flashing bolt of lightning down into the surf, signaling the start of the race.

As the Master of the Gales transforms into an albatross and flies over the participants, the wind shifts sharply and unnaturally from northerly to easterly, throwing the competitors into chaos. Ships begin to smash into each other and you see at least one foundering as the dragon headed prow of another boat has pierced it's hull, the two of them locked together. A ship begins to move towards you all as well, pushed by the winds.

Rain I need two dc 30 Sailing checks to avoid getting entangled in the chaos. If you succeed you are able to make it to open water and can begin the race. At which point you all can RP for a bit getting started, what you are doing, how you are organizing the crew etc.)

With the best plans thus far made Variel takes the chance to grab some quick sleep before the coming race. In the morning he wakes early and prepares his spells and makes sure that crew and officers alike are ready for this endeavor. It comes as a surprise to Variel that Pierce coming towards them. Not wanting to cause a scene Variel simply acknowledges a fellow pirate and pays no heed to him after that. That is until Pierce blows Rain a kiss and gives him a wink. Before he can help himself the spots on his palms glow bright and twin bursts of fire shoot from his hands to strike the wet deck. Thankfully the rain and weather prevents any real damage to the ship as the last thing they need was a fire on deck right now.

Angry at himself for loosing his temper Variel storms to his cabin to grab another set of gloves to cover his hands. Coming back to the deck Variel cools further in the rain as he sees everyone is indeed doing an admirable job.

AS the ships get into position Variel takes up a spot near Rain yet not obstructing her view. He hopes that by being next to her he accomplishes 2 objectives. The first is being a protector in case someone does try something underhanded. The second is to help her in any way with the charting that they made the night before.

As the lightning bolt strikes signaling the start of the race Variel has to grab the rail to steady himself as the wind suddenly changed. All around is an uproar as ships collide with each other. Rain, The Buxom Beauty is heading our way. Even though he is sure Rain noticed already.

Morning had come and with it the knots in Rain's stomach. There was unspent energy bristling in her hands, in each fingertip and she moved to the Wheel, Besmara's Tricorne proudly perched atop her head, cloaked, armoured, the Zul trident and retracted magical pike stowed diagonally across her back. Upon her ears she wore the diamond and turquoise dolphin earrings Pierce had given her (earrings of serene contortions), the braided silver bracelet someone had gifted her upon her betrothal to Variel, protection and shield rings and of course her silver and sapphire betrothal ring. She would look the part in this fine regatta of free captains. To the side, she secured Svingli's Eye to help her during the race. The rain was coming down harder now but she didn't mind -- enjoying it if truth be told as it kept her senses fresh and invigorated.

Neko was hiding somewhere - nearby but sheltered from the rain. Rain was mildly surprised by Pierce's presence in the water and she waved at him when he blew her a kiss. She looked to Variel and watched her beloved's fiery reaction to the flirtatious gesture and she cringed when she saw how riled he had become. "You are my chosen mate. Do not allow him to get under your skin. Not today," she whispered to Variel. He left and returned with new gloves and took his place by the side of her when the conch was blown - stalwart protector and able sailor aiding her in the chaos that was in the water at present due to the sudden, unexpected change in the wind.

Seeing the oncoming ship, and heeding Variel's warning, she called out commands to the crew and gave warning, "Hold tight!" and turned the wheel deftly and swiftly to move the Lady out of the direct path of The Buxom Beauty.

Rain was pleased she was able to extricate the ship from the other floundering vessels and was now moving out, into open water. She cast her eyes out over the water to see which other ships had broken free and any immediate or oncoming threat or obstacle.

Rain, with the aid of your crew, you masterfully make your way out of the crush of ships, catching the wind and sending your ship hurtling like the bullet from one of Flynn's pistols across the open sea. Five other ships have managed to extricate themselves from the group and make their way out including to your disappointment, the Wormwood. Whomever their pilot is you can see they are very skilled as well since they managed to slip through two ships and out into open water also.

Unfortunately Harrigan was not one of those ships. It would wise to keep an eye on her. Rain had similar thoughts as well it seemed. Knowing that Jiro was keen of sight, nimble enough, and a good sailor Jiro, you able to climb up the crow's nest and keep an eye on the water ahead. 3. Based on his knowledge about weather patterns, especially given the current wind/currents, is it likely that the other ships were using spells or enchantment to augment their speed?
4. What he knows about the island that is up for grabs via the victory of this race?
5. What things would please/delight Tessa? (if he finds something interesting during the race or after, he'll do what he can to get it for her).

Horatio turns to watch Dhaavan raise his voice to inspire the others, he notes that Amen-set is cheering along with the crew in response, but he himself says nothing.

Instead his eyes raise to the sky as he considers the wind.

Meanwhile, he continues to wait to hear the report that Horus shall bring back to Amen-set about the ships - especially the details about The Wormwood.

Then, he continues to recall all the facts that he has read, heard of or studied about the topics that he had been considering and he does what he can to formulate an answer to those questions.

Sorry for the lack of posting everyone. Real life hit me in the nuts these past few days.

Horus comes back having little in the way of information related to the pilot of the Wormwood other than saying that the pilot seems swathed from head to toe in black cloth.

The other ships have nothing unusual to report that would warrant attention.

Also Flynn, you typically cannot Take 10 on knowledge checks without a specific ability that allows that like Lore Master. If you want to make some rolls for those questions I'll have no problem answering what I can. A couple of them I can answer off the bat though. Master of Gales is a powerful druid and Free Captain known to be fair in races and the like due to hiss reverence for the spirit of the competition. The only ship you know of among those that are racing is the Wormwood. The others you're not familiar with (also don't worry too much about them. This race will really boil down to you and the Wormwood.) Need rolls to see if others are using spells. Nothing is known by anyone about the island because no one knows which island is up for grabs. Gifts for Tessa I leave up to you based upon what you know of her.

Variel, auto aid is fine due to your bonus in this instance.

Bless is fine Adular.

You swiftly manage to take a lead in the race due to the masterful sailing of Rain and the support of you all. Practically flying over the waves, you make your way to the first checkpoint known as the Stilted Shrouds. The Shrouds are an extensive series of shallow sandbars formed by the churning action of the Eye of Abendego. There are no up to date charts on the shrouds as new channels and sand bars are constantly forming and being swept away.

I am going to need 4 successful survival checks in order to navigate the Shrouds without running aground. If you have ideas of ways to improve your chances with your various abilities and expertise and such let your crew mates know. Not all ideas will work but I will incorporate any good ideas I see into the rolls. Also due to the quickness with which corrections need to be made, only one person is going to be able to make the rolls for navigating.

Yep anyone can navigate although you're going to have a hard time navigating and piloting at the same time since you won't be able to be at the side of the boat to look for sandbars and such.

At this point would we at least know that the "Man in Black" is not Harrigan himself? I mean, we can see Harrigan AND this guy, it's not Harrgian wearing black (maybe)? Also - the pilot is a "Man in Black"? Inconceivable! ;)

Yes, that's true. But as a 5th Level Bard I already possess the ability "Lore Master" (located under the "Special Abilities" Spoiler on my sheet). That said, do the checks reveal of note other than what you already revealed?

While Horatio's Survival Check is low (only a 5) Amen'set's pilot is not bad - a 15. If Rain is agreeable to navigating, Amen-set could take the wheel for a bit until after Rain has made her checks? If that happens, how many Profession: Sailor checks would need to be made while Navigating?

Rain, letting Amen-set take over piloting for a bit is up to you of course, just let me know if you're okay with that and I'll go from there.

As soon as Amen comes and replaces her at the Wheel, Rain picks up Svingli's Eye and runs to the side of the ship and peers out into the waters, hearing Jiro's magic message in her ear from atop the Nest re any sightings he can make, and relays the position of the sandbars and any obstacle/s back to Amen-set temporarily at the helm. (If need be, I'll place Neko on the other side of the ship to Rain and the golden cat companion can use her survival/perception skill to relay telepathically what she sees to Rain, if this is allowable? Amen-set flushes at pride at the honor being done to her and bows low to Rain.

"By your command, Pilot-Major," she says with a loud voice, so that any nearby can hear her.

Amen-set seems to be deliberately using Rain's formal title - as opposed to her more friendly term of address - so that any witnesses observe and respect Rain's formal rank and position in this race.

Dhaavan joins Rain and messages No to with his plan as well. Just in case there is any obstacle hidden from yours, or Jiro's sharp eyes...

Dhaavan summons a water elemental and orders it to swim at full speed and shoot up a flume of water at obstacles, like hidden reefs.

how many castings would I need to use to have an impact on the navigation?

Variel sees Rain head to the side of the ship as AMen-set takes over at the helm. As such Variel moves over as well to the side of the ship nearest Rain but still by the wheel in case any problem should occur to Amen-set. Variel continues to give potential help again in case it is needed.

Amen-set sees Variel moving to her, but her focus is on the wheel at this time.

Profession: Sailor to hold course (+2 for Tricorne Hat.

1d20 + 15 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 15 + 2 = 33

EDIT: If Variel is able to help, too, then that will add another +2 to the roll for a net total of 35 instead of 33.

Awesome! You all manage to quickly proceed through the shallows without incident and extend your lead.

Race score: +5

-------------------------------------------------

Amen-set pulls a tight last turn and shoots out into open sea again, you can see the Wormwood several hundred yards behind and to your port side, maneuvering through a different section of the shallows. You quickly leave them behind however as Amen and Rain switch places on the wheel. You continue on for the next few hours on, relatively, calm seas. You have built a sizable lead over the majority of your competitors with the exception of the Wormwood which continues to pursue you doggedly.

Suddenly Rain, you feel the ship begin to pull violently against you as an extremely strong current, fed by the Eye, shoves you to starboard. It is extremely difficult to maneuver through and requires all your concentration in order to keep the ship from being pulled.

As Rain needs to stay on the wheel, I need three survival or Knowledge nature checks from someone else in order to find a better way through the current so you do not lose your lead.

Male Human Guns. 1 (Mysterious Stranger), Fighter 1 (Lore Warden), Bard 6 (Archaeologist) - Barbarian 1 (Urban) Mythic (Champion) (AC 20 / HP 82 / F +9, R + 10, W +7 / Ini + 3 / Perc. +16)

Amen-set hands the hat back to Rain with a bow after Rain reclaims the wheel.

As the ladies switch places at the wheel, Horatio peers at The Wormwood in the distance, then turns his gaze at the narrows before them and studies them thoughtfully.

Knowledge: Nature - 3 times - 18, 18, 18.

Horatio will either use those Nature Checks independently or to aid someone else with +2's if anyone else wants to try rolling for Knowledge: Nature instead?

The DC is pretty high, Flynn. So, if anyone is prepared to aid Flynn or he aid them, then please go ahead and roll the three checks. Thanks!

Edit: Neither Jiro nor Adular have those required skills, so I cannot bot them rolling or aiding.

Rain has a +9 to Know. Nature, but I don't believe Immortal will allow her to make the check as she has to concentrate on driving the ship through the strong current. Sorry.

Variel could make the checks - if he does, he'll gain a +2 via Aid Checks from Horatio.

Failing that, I could try to make rolls instead of just dealing with a natural 18's if no one else is willing and if I'm allowed to do that after the Taking 10's?

Amen-set can't do the Nature Checks, but she could try Survival (though she only has a 4 in that, while Horatio only has a 5).

Just keep me posted regarding what you need and I'll do what I can to help.

They had gained a sizable lead on the rest of the competition except for the Wormwood. Of course it had to be Harrigan that would be the closest competition. Wre ahead and that is what mattered. At least that is what he thought until he felt the ship slide under his feet. One glance at Rain's tight grip on the wheel was enough to know that she would not be able to leave it to Amen-set or anyone else for that matter.

Hurrying to the side of the ship he looked down and saw the water racing past them on a strong starboard course. Horatio was on the other side of the ship. It would be up to them to figure this out and tell Rain which path to take.

Flynn, I will call out to you what I find and then you tell Rain. That is going to be our only chance.

Know nature aid checks 1d20 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 5 + (5) = 13 surge used
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Three times Variel called out to Flynn trying to help him with the water current. However he was only really able to provide any help twice. That last time Flynn needed help the swirling eddies were too much for him to understand. Clay he needed more time with Rain to understand the water currents better.

Flynn you able to use a surge on the last check to get us DC 20 on all three?

Botting Jamba

Once Rain had returned to the helm and placed Besmara's Tricorne upon her head, Jamba cast Guidance on Rain and then joined the Captain and Flynn to work together in determining the best course through or around the currents as Rain concentrated on steering.

Jamba's Know Nature: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22
Jamba's Know. Nature: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 12 + 1 = 17
Jamba's Know. Nature: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (11) + 12 = 23

All three working together (if permitted):
So on first check, Variel and Flynn can aid Jamba, for a total of 26.
On the second check, Flynn and Jamba could aid Variel for a total of 28.
And on the third check, Flynn can aid Jamba for a total of 25.

Rain's action

With intense concentration she listened to her crewmates' directions as she worked at keeping the Lady straight/true to course and not be dragged/pulled by the extreme currents.

Rain's Profession Sailor plus Guidance: 1d20 + 23 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 23 + 1 = 39

With the combined knowledge and efforts of Flynn, Variel and Jamba, they just manage to find a safe path through the fierce current to direct Rain so she could steer the Lady out of the dangerous waters and continue her lead in the race.

New Race Points: Nil.

Thanks, Co-GM!

GM: Earlier Dhaavan used a Water Elemental to help guide the help. We never really found out what kind of bonus that gave us at the time; but I feel like it could have given us a possible bonus during the last action.

Does having something like a Water Elemental aid us in studying the dangers ahead of us like the last set? That could be pretty important stuff if we're in that situation again. If you get a chance, please let us know - thank you :)

As you all progress forward and put some distance between you and your nearest competitor, a squall comes over the ship with winds rippling through the sails threatening to tear them to ribbons. The riggers manage to get the sails hoisted before any damage was done and you prepare to ride out the squall, suspecting it to be over shortly. All of a sudden a scraping is heard along the bottom of the ship. You do not suspect you've run aground as there is no land near your current position. Looking over the side however you do catch a glimpse an unidentified shadow under the water before it disappears.

Actions?

Actions?

Horatio uses some Free Actions to call out -

Recalling the threats of sahuagin and calls out to the gun crew.

"Action Stations," he says with a brisk tone, then nods to the Fighting Top for Amen-set to ascend to and lay cover fire on any threats that may try to climb the side of the hull.

As Dhaavan summoned Water Elementals Horatio will talk to Dhaavan -

"There's something under the ship... What do your Water Elementals see?" he calls out to Dhaavan.

Horatio will use his formal action after he sees what the others do.

Still very unwell, will try to post when I can.

Hearing the scraping sound beneath the ship and Flynn's question to Dhaavan, Rain calls out to Jiro up in the crow's nest (or through the message spell in place?), "Can you see anything in the water, Jiro?"

Variel likewise starts calling out instructions to the crew. Move to the center of the ship till we know what is going on. If you see grapples then hurry forward to cut them free. If this is some monster of the deep then prepare to defend yourselves.

Echoing Flynn's assessment, Dhaavan, some eyes in the water would be helpful right now.

Variel then casts shield on himself and stands closer to his betrothed to protect her as she is piloting the ship.

Uncertain as to what may be out there, Adular suspects trouble and moves to center himself so that he can cast “Bless” on the party…

Dhaavan’s Action

Dhaavan turns a glance to Variel –

Aye, aye, captain!

He then cracks his knuckles then begins to use his power to summon forth the magic needed to see what mysteries are below the water…

If Dhaavan’s Water Elemental is still up, Dhaavan will use its Perception Check to see what it sees. Otherwise, he will cast Summon Monster Two and bring up a Water Elemental.

While the others rush to obey, Horatio calls out to Piper –

”Piper, lass – get below the bilges and make sure that whatever we scraped didn’t cause any damage below… We don’t need any leaks now…” he adds, and the Halfling carpenter quickly rushes below to see what she can find out.

Piper will move below to make sure the lower decks weren’t damaged and that no leaks occurred.

As Horatio waits for Pipers Report he will Hold Action until he hears Dhaavan’s report…

Horatio is Holding Action until we hear what Dhaavan’s Water Elemental discovers; for now he is currently next to the cannon ready to fire at any enemy that tries to climb onto the ship.
