Everything looks the same Rain as it did before. You don't catch anything out of the ordinary in port.

---------------------------------------------

You all make your way to Tessa's Palace and are escorted directly inside. Apparently instructions were that you were to be admitted upon return. You are placed in a sumptuously appointed parlour and given refreshments and warm clothes to wash your face and hands. You are informed that Tessa will be in shortly and that she hopes you will be able to join her for lunch.

Several minutes later, the Lady of Quent herself arrives, smiling brilliantly at you all and saying Good day my friends! How have you made out with the task I set you?

Horatio turns a glance at the others, then looks back at the lady, his eyes ranging over her for a moment.

While he has no issue with letting the others address her first, something about her prompts him to speak.

"Begging your pardon, but we've done as well as might be expected, m'lady," he says to her with a grin and a small wink.

He looks at the others for a moment then looks back at her.

"Indeed, we've found a good bit of information on our journey; some of it more grim than might be guessed. Yet I think that as dark as the tidings might be that it should be able to help you," he adds with a more serious tone, though revealing no specific details quite yet.

Considering her offer for lunch, he glances at Variel, then looks back to her.

"I believe that we may discuss the details now, or perhaps after lunch - whatever your pleasure might be, m'lady," he adds with a gracious bow.

Following the lead that Horatio set Variel considers his words carefully. Perhaps this meeting will go better with a small meal and some drink. As Horatio alluded to, the information we have is grim.

As Variel waits for Tessa to respond to Horatio's inquiry of food he takes a moment to gather his words once again. After Tessa has decided one way or the other about the food and drink Variel will give her the information that she seeks. We followed the initial leads you gave us for quite a ways. We needed to make some inquiries along the way and a few side missions to gain the trust and information of others. Yet all of the information lead us to an apothecary. There we found that the proprietor was the leader of a group of spies. Yet somehow she must have been tipped off as when we arrived she had already received a missive to assassinate her associates. All of the group is dead but we were able to question the lady and find some valuable information in a hidden basement.

Variel then has the documents and information brought forth to show to Tessa letting others fill in other areas such as the questioning of the head, the discovery of the coded musical piece, etc.

Once the party has been shown to Tessa's dining hall, Horatio does little when it comes to answering specific information about their mission. Instead, he concentrates on his meal, his manners and spends the rest of the time listening to what the others have to say.

Of course, he will happily answer any direct questions that are asked of him personally, but given his initial overture with the lady he feels it is best to wait to see how she responds directly to him before volunteering any more information.

With the papers in Tessa's hands and the names of the players involved - or those few they now knew of, Rain added politely, "Try as we might, we were unable to discover the identity of the male contact in the city of Nisroch in Nidal. The apothecary was in the employ of a noble House in the Umbral Court of Nidal, but did not know which House, or would not say. I am still curious about a scrimshawer we spoke to in Drenchport by the name of Jaymiss Keft - He was the one who led us to Haddon. We only discovered Keft's identity through the Priestess of the House of Stolen Kisses here in Quent. It is strange, or truly fortunate, that Keft has survived when all these others have been killed for what they knew. The scrimshawer seemed cordial enough, but that could have been for our benefit. I cannot say for certain whether or not he too is a spy. What we do know is that there is a man waiting to meet with Zarskia Galembar in Nisroch. However, regrettably we were not discreet enough when we were done with Zarskia and her people and word may have gotten out of her demise. We had to get out of there quickly lest we were caught and questioned by the lawkeepers in Port Peril. Have your people brought you any news, Lord Captain Fairwind?" (We didn't clean up/dispose of the bodies at the apothecary - we left as soon as we could so we wouldn't be caught. So, I'm just going with that in my rp.)

Tessa listens intently as you talk and says It seems it is as I feared. Cheliax, their alliance with Nidal being one of the worst kept secrets of the Inner Sea, has always had designs on the shackles. If they ever came with their navy in force, disjointed and squabbling as we pirates are, they could destroy us. This information is enough for me to bring before the council to let them know that something is amiss......although... she says after a pause, her eyes lighting upon you all with a look of shrewdness, It would give much more weight and my ability to enact the necessary changes would be much improved if I had additional allies on the council.

She looks at Variel and Rain in turn, him being the Captain and she the Helmswoman, and says Have you all considered entering the Free Captain's Regatta? The prize for the winner is a seat on the Pirate Council and a sizable island in which to build a base or port. Harrigan, by the way, is entering on the Wormwood and now that the Master of Gales has decided to judge this year instead of race, the Wormwood is considered the favorite to win.

She finishes the last statement as if saying it offhand but you both know she is offering you a chance to humiliate Harrigan and help her at the same time should you win.

Horatio’s eyes widen in surprise at her suggestion via a “regatta”.

Good thing we have time to do shopping – I can’t possibly be expected to compete in a official regatta without a proper cravat…

He rolls his eyes a bit at the thought, but says nothing and instead listens somewhat more intently at her next words.

His eyes widen at this and suddenly the concept seems far more intriguing then he initially thought.

Taking a slow sip of his drink he glances around at the others and overhears Seijiro’s comment.

His mind suddenly tacks back to the time when he was almost murdered in the hold of The Wormwood and he recalls how Harrigan treated him after the would-be assassins were dealt with and his eyes glitter fiercely at the prospect of payback.

He turns to Sandara –

”Jiro-san speaks for me in this, too, lady,” he says with a firm voice, also eager to deal with that whoreson Harrigan.

”That said; if we are to go against Harrigan in this race I would be curious to know what the… “rules of engagement” would be?”

He quaffs his drink quickly then places the empty glass on the table and folds his arms and leans forward, his manner serious.

”I’ve seen Harrigan sail before and I know from experience that our Pilot-Major can sail circles around him – but while I have no problem with shaming him publicly in a race – how shall we be judged if we do more than simply beat him to the finish line?”

He glances at the others and then back to Sandara, curious to know what she has to say.

”After all; trophies, prizes, glory – all of those have their proper place, aye; but there is something to be said for revenge,” he adds with a sardonic smile.

Race the Lady in the Free Captain's Regatta? Against the favourite, the Wormwood? Rain did not doubt her skill at the helm, but Harrigan never did anything by the book, and, where she relied on her experience and skill, he would use trickery to cheat his way to the end. Dhaavan was right - pirates fell back on cheating and it depended on what gambits would be acceptable under the rules.

Flynn wrote:

"That said; if we are to go against Harrigan in this race I would be curious to know what the… “rules of engagement” would be?”

"Aye, I too would like to know what is permitted and what is not before we enter this race. Also, we should discover what improvements Harrigan has made to the Wormwood to give him an advantage in the water."

Talk of revenge and besting Harrigan made her think that this race did not sound simple or straightforward by any means. If Harrigan were to learn that the Lady had entered, then it would become a race of two ships and he would not stop to win. What would I do? Rain mused silently. Can I be as singleminded? Flynn had confidence in her ability and she did, too. But would that be enough? The easy and hard answer was no. They would have to be cunning and ready for any event. Her turquoise gaze sought Variel's eyes before turning her attention back to Tessa Fairwind.

"Lord Captain, can you tell us how many ships have entered thus far? And are any allies of Harrigan among them? Is there a fee to enter? My apologies for all the questions."

Varied listens to Tessa as she mentions the upcoming race. It seemed like a perfect opportunity but like the others he Chad further questions and thoughts on the matter. He was not as keen as Horatio to get revenge on Harrigan nor was he as eager as Jiro to race and outshine Harrigan. No, what he was concerned with more was the notion of the winner being a pirate lord and owning their own isle. It sounded fantastic yet intimidating as well. Having a seat on the council meant more responsibility and less freedom. How would he balance that with the desire to sail off whenever he wanted to. Yet the flip side of the coin is that there would be more power to enact change... Change such as to help Horatio with slavery, discover more about a possible invasion to the Shackles.

Keeping his thoughts to himself though Variel simply ask another question to Tessa, When does this take place as I have a prior engagement that takes precedence over all else in a month?

Sorry guys, Ana is not there at the moment. She dove off the side days ago and hasn't been seen since.

Tessa replies and says Unfortunately, the rules are set by the Master of Gales before the race. The only thing that is known is the starting point is Cauldron Rock on the very fringe of the Eye of Abendego so it is safe to assume that the Eye will play some role in this years race. As for the entry fee, it is 500 pieces of gold. A pittance for a ship like yours, and well worth the chance of revenge upon Harrigan I'd say.

Horatio leans back in his chair and pulls out a smoke, lighting it absently as he considers her words.

He had a hunch that the real perk to a race was likely the money made from betting.

After all; there was no real reason for anyone to follow a race with much enthusiasm without some form of gambling - perhaps putting coin on their ship could help them earn some much-needed wealth?

"Who is the Master of Gales and where can this person be found?" he asks her.

"Also, who is the chief gambler, or bookie, handling the bets placed on the race and where he can this person be found"

"When does the race start - how long do we have to sign up for it, and how long do these races typically last if we've started?"

"As both the Captain-General and Pilot-Major have hinted, we'd like to know who's participating in the race; how can we find that out, and when can we find that out?"

He turns to the others.

"I would wager that if the prize is a position on the Pirate Council then it is possible that Harrigan may be less worried about winning and more interested in aiding a potential ally in the race; someone who, if successful, would be chosen for the Council and then support Harrigan on the Council."

"We should try to find out who such a person might be - and take care of them," he adds as he lets a long stream of smoke exhale through his nostrils.

No sense in trying to find such a person. If we win the race then we have stymied both Harrigan and any Harrigan supporters at the same time. Besides, revenge is not the ultimate goal right now. Preventing Harrigan from being a pirate lord and on the council is more important.

That is why he sails, I am sure. As for the race, it begins in 1 week and should not take more than a week to complete at the most so you should have time if your wedding is not within that time. As for attending your wedding, I would be delighted to attend, depending upon the date of course. As for who is participating I cannot say but you'll see once you arrive at Cauldron Rock.

Surprised at the realization of Harrigan Variel responds, My apologies I did not realize that Harrigan was a member of the council. I was thinking that only non pirate lords would enter the race.

Hoping to cut off any possible conflict between Rain and Horatio Variel interjects between them. It is true that the entire crew and officers are invited to the wedding. That takes precedence over anything else and as such would mean that the Dread Lady would be moored to hold everyone in attendance. Hypothetically the Satyr could be used in the race should the Lady be docked.

Breathing a bit easier Variel continues, However we are fortunate to not have to worry about such an inconvenience. We can head to Caldron Rock making the necessary provisions for the race as we can. Once done with the race, and assuming we win, that still gives us time to inspect our island and make all appropriate arrangements for the wedding. Fortune smiles upon us it seems at this time.

Looking at Flynn, Hopefully that settles your mind on us participating in the race.

Hoping the issue was over for now Variel turns to Tessa. Thank you for the information regarding the race and your beliefs on the information we discovered. IF there is nothing else that anyone needs at this time then perhaps we should take our leave of you and make all preparations possible for the race.

Horatio's eyes widen.

"Sure - but I thought we sold The Satyr?" he says with a somewhat confused voice.

My bad - I honestly thought we sold The Satyr a long time ago; but at this point I honestly don't know if we still have it...

Horatio doesn't say anything, but his brow furrows as if he considers something and he takes a long taste of his drink.

Horatio takes a long drag on his smoke and exhales it out of his nostrils as he studies Variel thoughtfully for a few moments.

"Yeah; no worries," he says suddenly with a friendly smile.

Horatio reaches forward and stubs out his smoke and quaffs his drink.

"Sounds good," he says, then pulls himself to his feet.

"Lady Fairwind; your hospitality is rivaled only by your devilish charm. I got to say, I feel damn lucky to see you every time we come," he says to her with a bright grin and a wink, even as he tips his forelock respectfully.

"See you all soon, then," he says to the others as Amen-set snaps to attention as he nods at the others.

As he turns to exit the room he pauses and leans down and speaks softly to Variel -

To Variel:

"I'd like to chat with you later privately, if you don't mind? Don't worry, it's nothing too serious, just let me know when you got some time," he says with a quiet but polite voice.

He then stands up and heads out.

Amen-set moves to the doorway and folds her arms over her chest and bows low before the company, then turns turns and follows Horatio out.

Variel hears Horatio and answers him quite quickly as now was not the time to chat idly. Sure, I will have some time later just come find me.

With it seemingly finished with Tessa Variel stands up and offers a hand to Rain to accompany her. There was still some tension it seemed between Rain and Horatio so it seemed best to talk to Flynn later and focus fully on justice to be. It was still relatively early so Variel took the opportunity, if Rain was willing, to discuss wedding plans as they roamed leisurely back to the Lady. There was much to learn as he had no customs or familial traditions to help him.

The coming race could wait till morning before the group started arguing about preparations and plans and everything else.

With one hand around Rain's waist Variel waves with his free hand to Jiro. Not at all. Rain and I have much to talk about anyways. Although in the morning I would expect that we will all convene to discuss the upcoming race and see what everyone thinks about preparing for it.

Horatio nods and responds with another bright smile as he claps Variel on his shoulder amicably as he heads out.

Given the speed that he exits the room it seems clear Horatio also had no desire to speak about things more right away either, clearly preoccupied with other thoughts or business.

However, while he seems eager to leave it's clear that whatever he wanted to say will, no doubt, be something that can be addressed sometime in the future.

I doubt that there would be a conflict. I can't imagine Rain's family insisting on preventing us from racing in the regata... I mean, this is certainly a big deal considering the Master of Gales is in charge of the race Dhaavan notes with a shrug

Amen-set watches Horatio’s actions with lidded eyes, clearly wondering abut him.

However, it is not her place to question, so she simply says nothing but readies to follow him out.

As she leaves with him to the doorway she overhears Dhaavan talk and pauses as she passes him.

”I am glad that thou art safe and thy enemy was slain,” she says with sincerity she says quietly to him.

”I shall speak to thee again soon, doubtless,” she adds with a warm smile, then hurries to catch up with Horatio.

Rain inclined her head to Tessa Fairwind and permitted Variel to lead her out, his hand around hers. Variel had slipped his arm about her waist when she heard Jiro say he had some place to go. She was certain he would be going to see Selenia at the temple but held her tongue and simply smiled as the kitsune walked off. She had heard Dhaavan's words as they were walking out, but she did not address them for the day had been taxing and long and she wished to find a quiet place and just talk with Variel. It lifted her spirits a little when he announced the evening would be theirs alone and the group would come together in the morning to discuss the race. "My grandfather did discuss some of the wedding preparation with me before he left us to return home. It will be a true and formal Elven ceremony, but the feast will be relaxed and enjoyable with music and dancing. Come, let us discuss what is expected," and walking side by side, Variel's arm still about her waist, they enjoyed their privacy and conversation, and slowly Rain began to relax. Neko walked a little distance behind them, a vigilant chaperone as always, but at least giving them a modicum of space to talk freely.

Seijiro heads to the temple of Calistria to see Selenia... stopping along the way to buy a single beautiful flower, nothing austentatious - just has to be pretty, and perfect. His smile grows the closer he gets to the temple... When he arrives he asks to see Selenia if her duties permit.

Seijiro:
Selenia is available and overjoyed to see you. She exclaims over the flower and makes you comfortable. Making sure you are not disturbed. She seems even more relaxed around you than before and you both are able to have a great time together. Towards morning she seems like she may be interested in leaving the temple but is unsure. You get the distinct impression that she would be leaving due to her burgeoning regard for you.

Tessa nods to you all and says You have done me a great service and I am overjoyed at the blossoming relationship that is forming between us. Also, should I go to your wedding I will be in need of accompaniment. Sir Flynn, would you do me the honor of escorting me? She finishes the last smiling brilliantly, a gleam of hunger in her eyes.

A grin at both the wedding talk, and Jiro's personal business, "My services are at all your call." He bows, "I should go to see to the lady in me own life." And he plans, unless needed now, to check on Sandara.

didn't flynn already leave?

Selenia:

"I would love to have you come with us... with me!... sail away with me, dearest lady, my Selenia.. unless your duties to your goddess are pressing enough to keep you landbound? I would be with you all the time, and my own duties prevent me from being here long or often enough for me. I want to be together all the time. If you would just say yes, you will make me so very happy. And there will be an exciting race to come, and a wedding... our captain is marrying his lady love, our pilot. It will be a traditional elven wedding, or so I've heard, though I don't know what that entails, I'm sure it will be quite impressive and inspiring. Will you at least consider coming with me until after th wedding? That way you can decide if being with me, and at sea, for any amount of time is to your taste."

Seeing that the others seem to be distracted with their own plans he rises and bows to her gracefully.

He straightens from the bow and then stands tall before her, his gaze slowly caressing her curves for a long moment before finally moving to gently hold her eyes in his own.

"I'd be delighted to escort you, my Lady," he says as his lip raises in a roguish grin to mirror the hungry expression in her features.

Assuming that we are ok to fast forward to the morning and let every do RP on their own if they want to.

In the morning Variel calls the officers and others together to discuss the pending race and what to do to prepare for the event. We won't know exactly the details of the race till we reach Cauldron Rock. However by the it might be too late to make any preparations as those others in the race will be doing the same. Quent is a large city and should have some resources we could use to make purchases.

Adular, do you think few scrolls or a wand of make whole would help repair any damage to the ship that we might suffer from the weather?

Rain, any thoughts on what we might need to make the Lady even more formidable sailing?

Flynn, how is the stores of ammunition for the ballistae? I don't know if we will need them but we may need to protect ourselves.

Any other suggestions?
